This book is amazing. The first 28 pages provide a solid foundation of dieting principles targeted specifically for active guys who weight train. Gregg Avedon really knows what he is talking about when it comes to nutrition and his writing style is concise and easy to read. The rest of the book is filled with tons of high-protein healthy recipes. He even includes the nutrition facts for each recipe so you know exactly what you are eating. If you are a guy looking for some good healthy recipes to match your training regimen, this is the book to get.

I own several nutritional/training recipe books and Muscle Chow is top shelf quality. You certainly can't beat the price and unlike other cookbooks, this one allows you to select meals based on your goals and an established timeline towards a lean and ripped physique. As they say, the proof's in the [protein] pudding.

This is a great alternative to a typical "dieting" cookbook with recipes to build muscle while keeping nutritional requirements in balance. It isn't about mindless dieting and filling up on non-fat, no-calorie foods. Also beneficial to those who are looking for clean eating recipes. Bought this book on a whim and am extremely pleased with the purchase.
Like a fluffernutter sandwich - there's good stuff inside, but it's surrounded by fluff

It's hard to find a decent clean-eating cookbook. This one certainly is decent, but I wouldn't give it much more praise than that. There are some recipes that are pretty good and all of them are quite straightforward, but my major problem with the book is that some of the recipes are complete fluff that could have been all compiled onto a single page ("quick bites", or something like that). For instance, the "Fix and Eat Sardine Sandwich". Now, I'm going from memory here, but I'm pretty sure that the steps boiled down to these steps: Take two slices of bread, spread mustard on each slice, then put the sardines between the two pieces of bread and eat them. Sorry, Gregg, but I'm a healthy eater, not someone who's never been in a kitchen before. There are other recipes like this ("Slice up a head of lettuce and serve it with mustard as dipping sauce", for example) that are really wastes of space.
Also, it would have been good to see more explanation regarding carb-cycling (or carb-shifting as he describes it), along with macronutrient breakdowns for the different eating phases Gregg describes in the book.
There's some good stuff in here, that's for sure, but it's too much like a fluffernutter sandwich: lots of healthy potential surrounded, unfortunately, by too much fluff.

As a trained mental health professional, I wanted to read the book for purely academic and research reasons. However, I found myself going on a personal journey of exploration into the relationship between myself and my father with schizophrenia. This book was amazing to me on multiple levels.

Unfortunately, most readers of this book, as well as the author of the book, even if he is his son, are misinformed. I've spent a lot of time around mentally ill people who really do seem to have something dead wrong in their brain/body biochemistry, as well as imbalances of all sorts. Charles Lachenmeyer, the Outsider, was not crazy, except for the extremely stressful situations that he was forced into from OUTSIDE ( pun intended ) sources. He was no fool, he had a PhD in sociology and was a University professor of the same. A man doesn't just go from that kind of being to a homeless guy sleeping in a puddle of his own urine on a park bench in -0 degree weather. His books are still in the sociology section of Borders and Barnes n' Noble bookstores. What happened was that Charles came up with a multi-million dollar idea as to how to revolutionarily re-structure society in a much more efficient way. However, he refused to share his idea with his colleagues, thusly with the government. Charles wanted full credit for his own idea, and rightly so. So his colleagues teamed up with various government and probably military agencies to try to ruin his life, basically to torment him into sharing his breakthrough idea of sociology. Anyone who is naive enough to doubt that various agencies are well-versed in mind-control technology and psychological warfare, needs to seriously deprogram themselves from their own mental conditioning. MK ULTRA, MAJIC, OPERATION MIND CONTROL, etc. as well as other operations are no mere conspiracy stories, even the agencies themselves willingly admit that they did these operations now, being that so much time has passed. Unfortunately, Mr. Charles Lachenmeyer was subject to their torture devices. His embarrassing dreams at night were, in turn, reenacted the following days in braod daylight public view to humiliate him by " strangers ". His family life was sabotaged away from him, leaving him all alone except for his comanion, his dog. Of course, then, the dog was kidnapped away from him, leaving him emotionally bankrupt and spent. He was then subjected to the final part of the plan, which was to make him seem like some crazy " schizophrenic " spouting off conspiracy stories, and unfortunately, even his son Nathaniel, bought into this. The whole time Charles was homeless, he was writing, more and more he was expanding on his breakthrough, as well as exposing the mind-control that he was subjected to, probably naming important names in his book. Charles was ultimately killed, and " his papers were mysteriously lost in a flood in his apartment " ( how convenient to lose all of the evidence ) All in all I think Nathaniel did well to honor his dad in this book, and I do believe that his intentions were good. The book is excellent, and I read it back to back 3 times in a row. But .... Seem like he was simply a brilliant man that became schizophrenic? Well let me pat you on the back, that's exactly what they want you to think.

I found the Outsider to be a fascinating book, one that really opened my eyes to the problems encountered by those suffereing from mental illness and schizophrenia. The son's journey to understand the father and piece together the last few years of his life is heart-wrenching and the reader truly sympathizes with his pain and anguish. A terrific book that I heartily recommend.

THE OUTSIDER brought the pain and the struggles of Charles Lachenmeyer to life. Charles was a brillant sociology professor who gradually was transformed into a victim of paranoid schizophrenia. Even at his lowest points, he kept trying, and he kept believing in humanity. In one letter to the author, he wrote, "No matter how adverse the circumstances--and mine have been adverse--there is never any reason to give up . . ."
This book breathes life into a person with mental illness, and it brings understanding. It left me in tears and with a deep respect for Charles.

I truly believe this book should be read by everyone, not just people that are going into the mental health field. I was required to ready it for a Social Work class I am currently taking at the undergraduate level; however, I can say without a doubt it is by far the best book I have ever read! Lachenmeyer really brings home the stigma and heartache that is experienced by people and their loved ones suffering from such a debilitating mental illness. Most people are unaware of the devastating effects mental illness can have on a person and their family. This book highlights so many issues concerning mental health as to responsibilities of people in the system, stigma, prejudice, and the tolerance of society in general to someone suffering from mental illness. Moreover, this book was really an awakening that this could happen to anyone at any time. I wish everyone could read this book as it really teaches a lesson on humanity!!

This book delivers on what it promises--peace from the suffering that often accompanies anxiety and panic disorders. The book covers symptoms of these disorders that few other books even touch upon, and it offers helpful tips and calming suggestions to help the reader overcome the symptoms. It makes you feel like you're not strange or "going crazy" as a result of anxiety!

Probably the best and simplest self-help books I've read concerning anxiety, panic, and the resultant depression. Dr. Weekes was ahead of her time in calming the reader, recognizing the fear and nervous exhaustion facing so many people. Sure- get the therapy and meds if you need them, but read this book and keep it close to your heart! Peace- JB- Chicago

Many years ago I suffered from agoraphobia, not even having a clue at the time what that meant. While I was never housebound, everyday situations like riding in cars, sitting in the boss's office, or going to the grocery store could produce almost heart-stopping anxiety. I was virtually paralyzed in my life, and certainly would never have accomplished any important life goals in that state -- a condition that crippled me for about ten years. One day I happened on Dr. Weekes's book "A Simple, Effective Cure for Agoraphobia." I don't wish to sound overly dramatic, but my life was pretty much turned around by Dr. Weekes's clear, basic and empowering program. I have remained essentially symptom-free now for 20-plus years. I mean, we all have those nervous-making moments, but mine are now in the normal and manageable range and, while I used to have trouble driving to a nearby convenience store, I have now traveled pretty extensively in several continents -- not bad for a former agoraphobic, huh? Several years ago I wrote a letter to Dr. Weekes to thank her for the profound changes I experienced with this (then) maybe $6 book purchase. Sadly, I learned from her niece in a lovely letter that Dr. Weekes is no longer living. I owe Dr. Weekes a great deal, and would certainly encourage anyone who suffers from an anxiety condition to take a chance on her books. There is always an investment of personal energy in any therapeutic effort, and (as the commercials always say) "results will vary," but Dr. Weekes provided me with a framework that was reassuring, directive and enormously beneficial. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This little book helped me when I was suffering a bout of stress related problems. The physical symptoms were alarming and heightened the way I was feeling. The writer explined these symptoms, and the links with the anxious mind, in a very clear and compassionate way.
The book really did bring a lot of comfort, understanding, and it helped me through my problems. This occurred over three months ago, and I feel that I have learned a great deal from the situation: that I was overdoing it at work, that there is a price to pay in terms of the degredation of mental health; this leads to an array of unusual physical symptoms (in my case: pins and needles in arms and legs, inability to catch my breath, noise and traffic in my head and insomnia).
This book explained these and encouraged me not to be too alarmed , explaining that they will eventually pass - and they did.
It's an excellent book which will help you understand what is happening to your nerves. It persuades you to avoid these situations in the future.

This is not just a book for Corgi owners (although if you are one, you will see your dog in Annie) but for everyone who has ever owned, loved or wanted a dog of any breed(s). For the new puppy owner, it is an absolute must. As "two books in one" Puppy Kisses is half puppy-training manual and half dog story. Although the puppy-training leaks into the story, and dog story leaks into the training, Puppy Kisses is laid out beautifully and is easy to read and entertaining. I would not want to "break in" a new puppy without this book!

Mailorder Annie teaches us all a little bit about love. If you've ever owned a dog, you probably know what a "heart dog" is. Each of us probably has one. Annie was Howard's, Molly was mine.
The book is a wonderful romp through the life and times of a dog and her people. It's also a must for not only potential Corgi owners but any potential dog owner. While of great value for the dog owner, the true value is to those of you considering a dog. This will tell you if a dog is right for you.
And it will tell you if a Corgi is right for you. Corgis are a tough breed and you really have to be up to the challenges. We like to say that ours are "too smart for our own good" and that we're "out numbered, two to two"

As an owner of two lovable welsh corgis and past owner of one who is enjoying life over the Rainbow Bridge (probably frolicking with Mail Order Annie) this book was an absolute joy. The personalities of Corgis are so similar and yet each had its own quirkiness. The story of Annie's demise was so similar to what we experienced with our Indy it was a stirring and poignant memory. Indy also died in our arms on the way to the vet. Indy was also bred at Terenelf. I hope everyone has the experience of life with a dog, it is as rewarding and joyful as Mr. Weinstein beautifully illustrates.

This is an affectionate self-help book, written with love in a very friendly tone. It is motivational, spiritual, devoted to improve your self-esteem. Unlike the other self-help books that merely tell you what do to and give examples, this title helps you to change your beliefs, values and to set the new goals in your life. These goals are aimed to make you happy, strong and self-confident. All of the advises throughout the book are gender-neutral. They can be equally applied for both men and women without any change. Why then the author has called the book "Secrets ... Every Woman Should Know"? Because, as she considers, when women teach each other, something spiritual, magical happens, and the author would be happy to be a teacher as a woman, since most of her teachers were men. The author writes with great amount of love, and the love transmits to the reader. I had great pleasure and inspiration reading the book. What I would have suggested to this book is the index, references and further reading section, although this is somewhat atypical for self-help books.

When I first read this book, I had purchased it by mistake. I thought I was buying "Secrets about Men Every Woman Should Know", which I read many years earlier after seeing Barbara DeAngelis on Oprah. I so enjoyed "Secrets about Men..." that when I saw it in a window, I snagged it quickly. To my surprise, I bought an even better book this time, "Secrets about Life...". I gave that copy to my mother who also thoroughly enjoyed it, and then bought a new copy from Amazon to share with another friend.
The author writes from her own experiences using a very personal perspective that I find easy to relate to.

You know that saying "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear?" Well, Barbara had been here for some time and whenever I cleared out the old or "never going to read" books, she held on. Now that I needed her, she kind of called out to me from the bookshelf. I read the book in one sitting. I cried, I laughed, I found clarity and I am so thankful. This book can be lifechanging and she'll wait until you're ready.

A decade ago, what we ate wasn't on the radar of most people. The musings of a few hermits, a handful of anti-government critics and your garden variety assortment of conspiracy theorists and crazy people was all that one had when it came a debate on whats being done to our nation's food supply.
Thats why Seeds of Deception is such a welcome addition to my bookshelf. For the first time there is well-researched publication with sources cited and ducks in a row that provides the reader with a through, in-depth look into how today's scientific community is damaging our food supply with their manipulative practices designed to milk farmers - and the American public - for every last red cent possible.
Other countries do not have the problems with obesity, diabetes and other similar diseases that Americans do. While the media takes the approach that its just the way we are, some are not willing to accept that explanation as fact. Seeds of Deception goes a long way towards exploring the possibility that this is not just another evolutionary fact of life on our green and blue planet, but something a bit more down to earth, man made and much more sinister.

I have known about GMO foods for a while, but I did not realize how far it has gone. This is a must read for every single American. Get in touch with your legislatures now and act on this. Every single school and library across the US must have this book. If you value your health and which I am sure most people do, we have to come together as a nation and WE have to stop GMO foods. The big pharma is taking control over all of us and it's all being done under our noses. GMO foods, mandating vaccines, how far are we as a nation going to let our freedom keep slipping. Read this book, save yourself, children, friends, and neighbors. I give it to people to barrow and everyone that has read it, the jaws are dropping.

Jeffrey Smith has done an excellent job in exposing the truth about genetically modified foods. Seeds of Deception is easily understandable, compelling and well documented. It's disheartening that the people in control of the food supply are so focused on their bottom line and don't seem to care about the long-term health and safety effects of introducing foreign genes into the food supply. Genetically engineered ingredients are already in foods on the grocery store shelves right now. If you care about your health, you need to read this book, avoid processed foods and buy organic.
But where are all the bodies?

The subtitle, "Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically
Engineered Foods You're Eating", is covered pretty well in this attack book. Some corporations
are greedy and unethical. It is easy to believe bad things about FDA. The CYA attitude
that bureaucracy fosters in bureaucrats, and the common pattern of industries coopting the
regulators, make the accusations against the FDA easy to believe, and even easy to expect.
What is not so easy to believe is the overall message of the book. All genetically modified
foods are bad for you. They are less nutritious than the natural alternative, and will harm
you in one or many ways such as allergies, cancer, nervous disorders, ulcers, reduced intelligence.
sexual problems, misformed children, or many more, and any evidence to the contrary is faked
by our corrupt government and the evil corporations in this vast biotech conspiracy.
There are interesting parallels between the beliefs in this book and the beliefs of creationism
or intelligent design, and also with the catastrophic anthropomorphic global warming alarmists.
There are extensive notes of sources and an index, so you can use this book to help you argue
against engineered foods, or to search for arguments against the claims in the book. The phrase
"precautionary principle" does not appear in the index, and I do not recall seeing it in the
text, but the idea is stated repeatedly: genetic engineering should not be done until it has
been proven safe for many generations. Essentially, nothing should ever be done for the first
time.
While most of attack is against genetically engineered foods in general, with the usual weasel
words such as "might", "could", "linked", and "Believed", there are also specific claims against
certain foods. There might be more such specific claims than recalls of organic foods after the
death of consumers, but I'm not sure of it.
The last chapter is a commercial for the book. You should buy lots of copies and give them to
everyone that is not aware of the evil plot. There is also information about how to avoid the
evil food. Unless you are already in the know, you are probably eating it now. That makes me
wonder where all the bodies are hid, and why life expectancy keeps going up.
Smith has another book out, same topic. I have not seen it yet. In response to it, there is a
claim that Smith claims he can fly (yoga, not airplane), and other hard to believe powers.
The attack on Smith seems like the attacks he accuses Montsano of, so I checked it. The Daily
Illini says the article describing his "powers" was published by them on page 4, Oct 28, 1996.
Smith's strange beliefs do not make his book wrong, but they might lead some to find him less
reliable than some others. I was almost at the 90% mark of the book when I encountered the slam.
The book reduced my confidence in bioengineering, reduced even further my confidence in government,
and left me still skeptical of attacks on bioengineering.

The book documents very well the highly favorable impact of regular exercise on mental health. The fact that the author is a practicing psychiatrist lends credibility to the overall conclusion that exercise is good for you mentally as well as figuratively. Not being a scientist, I do not fully understand the author's quite technical explanations of how exercise changes the biology of the brain to make a person better mentally. Nevertheless, he is strongly convincing.
Anyone interest in the health benefits of exercise and the health risks of not exercising ought to read this book.
If you are already regularly active, the book will motivate you to be more so. If not, it should give you incentive to get off the couch.

Modern America is in love with fitness. It seems that the quest for the body beautiful has reached epidemic proportions. However, most people only think about the physical benefits of exercise. It should come as no surprise that exercise is a good idea - for the body and the mind. Although marketing gurus would have us believe that everyone in America owns a Bowflex or an Ab-Roller, it seems that the result of our overly sedentary lifestyle has largely caught up with us.
Mind you, this is not a novel idea. Even Plato conceded, "Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical exercise save it and preserve it." This tome came to us from one of the very people who helped lay the philosophical foundation of Western culture.
Building upon this platonic idea that humans are genetically built to move, Dr. John Ratey provides an excellent development of the "why" behind exercise's importance. His book, Spark: the Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain provides enough scientific evidence to spark an interest in all readers.
Dr. Ratey includes a landmark case where a school in Illinois actually reversed a negative educational trend by incorporating an intense athletic regimen. His delving into the realities there demonstrates the connection between exercise and increased intellectual acumen. Many school districts, who are currently opining for the next "magical bullet" to fix their systems, might find their money better spent on heart rate monitors that prove their students are exercising in the right zone. This methodology worked wonders in Naperville, Illinois.
It seems that Dr. Ratey wants to destroy stereotypes of unintelligent athletes. Nothing could be further from the truth: more movement actually increases the brain's ability to learn. This book provides sufficient scientific detail to prove it - to a physician, teacher, or layman. Dr. Ratey, himself a clinical associate professor of psychiatry, has no intention to aim this work exclusively at the scientifically minded, however. Even the intermittent athlete can benefit from decreased tendencies toward stress, depression, or anxiety.
Armchair Interviews says: Who needs this book? Anyone who wants to be smarter - and understand "why" exercise can provide a kick start for the brain.

In this groudbreaking book, Harvard psychiatrist, John J. Ratey, MD, takes us on a fascinating exploration of the impact of exercise on the brain. Most people just think exercise is good for overall health. But what's extraordinary is that exercise is the best thing you can do for your brain, not just your body. Exercise reduces your risk for Alzheimer's by 50%. It produces the protein BDNF, which is like Miracle-Gro for your brain. Exercise can mitigate the symptoms of depression better than drugs like Zoloft. Exercise can help your productivity at work. I could go on and on. After reading the book, you will have 100 reasons why you need to do aerobic exercise (for your brain) every single day.
SPARK is a terrific compliment to John Medina's new book, BRAIN RULES (full disclosure: I'm the publisher of the book). One of the 12 Brain Rules is "exercise boosts brain power." It's impossible to read these books without wanting to get up and move. Unforunately, our workplaces and schools keep us in cubicles or desks for 8 hours a day. I hope these books can do something about this problem. Sitting goes against everything we are built to do.

I used this book with my 8 year old. It was simple enough so that he could follow along while I read yet specific enough so that he could relate and get a sense that he was not alone in being anxious and how to go about feeling better. It had enough humor to keep a child interested yet not so much humor that the child felt like his worries were being made fun of. It helped me to learn new ways to help my child when he was worried. Before I would say that things would be ok. That didn't help. With new tools, I can help him calm down and build skills he can use for the rest of his life.

This book was just what our family needed. My seven year old couldn't get enough of it. We saw a difference almost immediately. It helped her gain control of what she thought were impossible situations. We still re-read the book as needed. She was diagnosed with OCD recently, but because of the book, she already had a firm foundation for fighting her "worry bullies", and responded dramatically to therapy. I would recommend this book for all kids - from the ones that have just run of the mill anxieties to sudden on-set anxiety caused by a traumatic change to kids that have serious anxiety related disorders.

This is a terrific book -- I use it with my 6-year-old, who really engages with it. It addresses the origins of worries & strategies for controlling worries, all in a very kid-approachable way. Each chapter ends with a space for the child to draw a picture of something related to his/her worries. The book has helped me talk more concretely and openly with my child about worrying.

If you are a parent of a child with anxiety, you know how it can feel like your family is held hostage by your child's worries! This book saved our family! It was recommended by our child's therapist and I just can't say enough about it. It is written for kids to understand, but it is not condescending so even an older child or teen would benefit from it. Several specific strategies are described in the book. We saw improvements almost immediately and within a month or two, our daughter had actually retrained her brain and she is now a different child. Now, if we see the anxiety coming, all we have to do is mention a few specific words and she is back on track!

It is a good recourse to have, but don't use it as a "nursing bible" or you will think you are doing EVERYTHING wrong.
I found "What to Expect the 1st Year" had a MUCH better section on breastfeeding that was user friendly and not mean to those that struggle.

(Review by my wife): Despite taking a breastfeeding class, working with lactation consultants and doing quite a bit of reading on the subject, I never did get my son to latch on properly. As a result, he ended up being hospitalized for jaundice. Everything turned out fine, but the experience really scared me. I wasn't confident that I had the ability to nurture him on my own. Plus, with the exception of my husband, I had little encouragement from others to keep going. As a result, I gave up on breastfeeding the natural way. Instead, I pumped breast milk for him until he was twelve months old. I just felt like I had to see how much milk he was getting. Once I got pregnant with my daughter, I was determined to succeed the next time around. I believe that I am still exclusively breastfeeding her at six months because of Mohrbacher's and Kendall-Tackett's book. The Seven Laws gave me so much insight as to what went wrong with my son Not only did they educate me on how to fix problems that might come up, but more importantly how to prevent many of them. Everything is laid out so logically that you truly walk away with all you need to know about breastfeeding. And sadly, the reality is that you cannot assume that you're going to be taught how to breastfeed during your short postpartum hospital stay. So you really do have to educate yourself. Along with the invaluable hands-on help of lactation consultants, this book is the only one you'll need. In addition to its wisdom, the other great gift of this book is how it empowers you to try and stick with breastfeeding.

This book is so amazing! I'm in training to become a doula and this book was one of the books we were required to read, so I bought it not thinking twice about it. I have 4 children of my own and nursed all of them, so I didn't think this book was going to teach me much since I have a lot of experience with breastfeeding and overcoming problems, but boy was I wrong!!! This book has so much information that in hindsight would have saved me a lot of difficulties and would have made things very simple - the way it should be and can be! If you are pregnant or nursing get this book, don't think twice about it, you will not regret it. The pictures seems like from the 70's, but hey, I don't think nursing positions have changed much since man kind was created, so who cares if the hair styles and the wardrobes in the pictures are outdated. The nursing positions are the focus anyway, therefore the pictures are very helpful regardless of when they were taken.

the dietary cure for acne makes it clear what you may be doing wrong with your diet, and why, and what you can do to truly affect the health of your skin. I purchaced the book along with the paleo diet for athletes 9 monthes ago and have been following the diet fairly stictly, with good results for my skin and outstanding results for my overall health and athletic performance.although this book is a very good overview of the process of acne and a general guideline how and why to change your diet to improve your acne,i would highly recomend puchacing the paleo diet or the paleo diet for athletes. that being said, i also feel if you already have one of those books the dietary cure for acne dosn't offer any new advise and realy would only be useful to understand the prossess of acne, giving one more motivation to follow the paleo diet. Also i feel diet is the most important cure, however in some cases not a total cure. my recomendation for the person truely looking to improve thier overall health would be to skip the dietary cure, purchase the paleo diet and follow it, and purchase The Acne Cure by Terry J Dubrow. however, for a qick read that just may change your life, the dietary cure for acne can do wonders on its own

I owe a big thanks to Dr. Cordain for this book. I have an all-too- typical story: suffered from moderate acne for years, been on a medications for years with only moderate results. I quit my medication the day I started the acne diet and since then my skin has steadily improved over the past two months. I have had minimal breakouts, inflammation has gradually decreased, and my skin is clearer now than it has been since pre-highschool.
The diet does require considerable discipline, but I have also seen the other described benefits to my energy levels and general health.
The book is detailed, but easy to follow. My one recommendation would be that it draw a distinction between acne and rosacea. I also suffer from the latter and have had to cut some additional foods in order to see further improvement to my skin.
Overall, this book has been a life-changer!

I have followed Dr. Cordain's work for quite some time now, and have always found his explanations for modern, or western, diseases to be well-grounded and usually quite obvious given the proper framework -- i.e. eating a diet that we are not evolved to eat. The Dietary Cure for Acne continues his excellent work and makes the findings accessible without dumbing down the science.
