I was very pleased with with this book. It gave me more information on past life regressions than I had received in previous books on the subject. It is clear that the author is very experienced in her work and she details many actual regressions. I also appreciated the past life regression script that was included in the book. It's a great read for the beginning practitioner or anyone wanting to gain a greater depth of understanding on past life regression. After reading the book, I now am ready to take a course in hypnotherapy and start practicing!

I have been reading Past Life Regression: A Guide for Practitioners, and find the book to be in wonderful alignment with what I have learned from Milton Erickson's methods. From a clinical psychology research perspective, it is so helpful for clients to work in the metaphors, such as are demonstrated in this book, allowing them to best process their emotions in a client-centered, non-leading fashion. This book gives clear and detailed guidance and suggestions on how to do this utilizing past lives. After reading the book I contacted Dr. LaBay, and she was most helpful in supporting my pursuit of incorporating past lives into my professional practice. I am look forward to taking her trainings in the future. Maria CS Gabelberger, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist

I recently purchased this book. This regressionist is local to me in Washington State, and she used to be on the AM radio quite frequently at KKNW AM1150 in Bellevue, WA.

In fact, I "won" a group regression session by calling the station at the appropiate time. I attended the session and was able to quite clearly visualize a former incarnation in Russia that seems to always surface in group sessions such as this one, probably because it might be quite relevant to my current situation this lifetime.

She has quite a local following and it seems she has been featured at national and international symposiums on reincarnation related topics. Actually, I have only casually read parts of the book, but I can attest to her abilty as a practitioner.

I'm not a past life regression practitioner but I'm trying to access past life memories by working with a hypnotist and doing my own meditation.

Even so this book was fascinating for me.

It goes far beyond just the mechanics of hypnotizing someone although that is covered for the professionals who regress others for a living.

It looks at past life memories and the time between lives from a broad perspective as far as how they relate to each other and to this current life.

The author seems to have certain psychic abilities and be able to travel in other dimensions such as the 'astral' plane of existance.

There are many strange topics in this book which will be almost revolutionary to people who have strict beliefs. These are too numerous to list in this review but suffice it to say these might fall under the category of 'new age' ideas for some people.

This is a great book. It keeps coming out with amazing ideas right on through to the epilogue which offers a wonderful message of hope.

I enjoy exercising and doing many sports such as tennis and golf. This book shows what Pilates exercises to do if you are interested in different sports. I love this book and am so happy I bought it.

Not just for athletes

I am not an athlete, but I found this book very useful. I'd ignored it for a few years but recently acquired it. It goes through just about every Pilates mat exercise that I have ever come across (most other manuals omit at least a few of them) and explains the purpose of the exercise (something many manuals neglect to do). They also include an extensive listing of the Wall Series, the Standing Series and a variety of Reformer on the Mat exercises as well as some other hard-to-categorize exercises that usually show up at the end of some practices, like Bent Knee Lifts and Jumps (which, by the way, look very much like the later developed Lotte Berk Method warmups).

This is an excellent reference for the general Pilates practitioner, but athletes will also be able to utilize this. For each sport, they list common injuries and targeted muscles, then prescribe usually two workouts and the schedule that should be followed on the off-season and training season. Obviously, nothing replaces a one-on-one discussion with a knowledgable Pilates instructor, but this should be useful for those who don't have access to one. Sports included are Swimming, Running, Skiing, Tennis and a few others I don't recall off the top of my head.

This was a great concept that was very well-executed. Given the level of knowledge and expertise, I'd love to see these authors come out with a similar book addressing common injuries and/or postural problems.

Excellent resource for athletes, Pilates students and Pilates instructors.

I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.

I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.

I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.

An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

A great read for fitness enthusiasts!

This was as comprehensive a study as I can imagine possible on how New York City, under the guise of urban renewal, allowed certain poor areas of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan in the 1970's and 1980's to burn down, displacing huge numbers of people, and resulting in the spread of TB, and AIDS throughout New York City, the surrounding areas, and beyond.

The significant feature of this magnificent book - the last shape taken by an ongoing series of studies into the results of neo-liberal public policy by Roderick and Deborah Wallace - is that the authors know what they are talking about. Their expertise in statistical studies, developped in a completely different field of study (zoology) is such that, when they first by chance found themselves reading the so-called statistical arguments for expenditure cuts in fire prevention and other services, they KNEW - not as bleeding-heart liberals, but as professional statisticians - that what they were reading was incompetent, pseudoscientific, ideologically motivated nonsense. Since then they have waged, in a string of devastating publications, a truly heroic struggle against the powers of prejudice, governmental meanness and big business-motivated press disinformation. If the the poor stupid general public that reads the newspapers and elects the politicians were ever allowed to know about the Wallaces and their battle for the truth, they would have long since been recognized as among the greatest names alive. Think about it: why did they take it upon themselves to fight this fight? Not, by any means, to advance their career: their career was in another field, and might even have been endangered by their taking controversial stances on public matters. Not for self-interest; and not for a thirst for fame - for they carried on for decades in spite of being completely ignored by the major media. They acted only out of pure civic passion and a sense of right and wrong. Therefore, known or unknown, the Wallaces are genuine living heroes, and their names deserves to ring as nobly as that of old Sir William of that ilk, who also fought for the downtrodden and ignored when there was nobody else to fight for them.

The Wallaces document the effects of the reduction in fire service and planned strinkage of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, I would have liked to see statistics included in how many fire deaths (civilian and firefighter), major injuries, families left homeless, etc. Another not to be missed book is Report from Engine 82: written in a totally different style, but brimming with empathy for the inhabitants of the area, it's the memoir of a fireman who fought fires in the South Bronx during this era.

This book gives a thorough analysis on how public policies were the catalysts for the socioeconomic destruction of low-income communities of color in New York City. Necessary reading for those who still do not realize that activism and organizing are important vehicles through which marginalized communities keep in check the forces that seek to further fragment and disenfranchise them.

Stress is all in your head, so your head should be able to manage it, right? "Positive Directions: Shifting Polarities to Escape Stress and Increase Happiness" is a guide to positive thinking to help people increase their contentment in life simply by thinking much more positively and for the future. Saying that continued pessimism spreads to more aspects of life, and that many studies show that optimists live longer, "Positive Directions" is the positive vibe that many need to succeed in everyday life.

A Mix of Science and Experience

Review Date: 2009-01-09
I came to this book with the question in mind "Can anyone be happy all of the time?" Of course not, but Dr. John Ryder's book Positive Directions: Shifting Polarities to Escape Stress and Increase Happiness aims to show us how we can have more control over how we see the world, related to other people and manage our stress in our daily lives.

Dr. Ryder has produced what I would call a bit of a "hybrid" in his latest book. Hybrid you might ask? Yes, John Ryder has written this book not only out of his scientific and educational background as a Psychologist but also he draws out a good portion of this book from experience, intuition and out of common sense. This is the mix that he seems comfortable with and in using such a construct the book becomes more assessable for the lay reader and those who are looking to find more happiness in their own lives. A good example of this, Dr. Ryder uses the analogies of keys (positive tools) and locks (negativity) to show the different planes that we need to work on in order to relieve many of the problems and stresses that drown our happiness in our daily lives. This makes the text simpler to understand than it would have if he'd simply written this as a professional psychologist.

At center of the book are the polarities that Dr. Ryder has named JEEP (judgment, emotion, energy and patterns). Each of these polarities has a positive and a negative side and have an effect on every facet of your life. So the trick is to learn where you would fit in relation to JEEP - just where are your weaknesses that cause you ultimately to not be as happy as you should? Throughout the rest of the book you are presented the keys to each of the locks that would tilt your polarity to the negative side and to transform into a more spiritual being. So it sounds a bit new agey? Well, I suppose some of it does come off this way but then again much it is in the presentation.

At the end of the day I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve their outlook on life. It is possible that to get the most out of it one might ought to read the book slowly, one chapter at a time so that one has a chance to work on each point. Otherwise I recommend taking lots of personal notes - notes directly linking your own life to what is being covered in the book. You should get lots out of it that way. And become a happier spirit in the bargain as well!

Positive Directions seems to me to be more than a self help book, it is really more of a change your life guide and workbook. This book will do for your mind what the gym does for your body. Now, more than ever, we need to focus on the positive. All of the negative things being thrown at us every day can drag us down, with the economic turmoil raging around us and affecting us every day, now is the time to think positive and take positive action to rise above any negative or depressing feelings. John Ryder can help you deal with the stress we all have, overcome anxiety, make better and more positive decisions, and help you to become happier and more successful.

I had previously read parts of this book at the local library and knew I had to add it to my collection. The book is amazing, it contains healing spells, and can also be used as an amulet. Some of the language is a little dated so you'll have to do some homework to find out the modern equivalent to the words and conditions named in the book. I highly recommend anyone interested in spiritual healing purchase this book.

If you haven't read Manly Wade Wellman, then you have missed a wonderful opportunity. It's good writing, and the best of his writing is about Silver John, who wanders the Applachian mountains finding song, and dealing with supernatural evil, often with the help of this book. No, it's not a grimoire, but it does have some wonderful folk wisdom that will make the major drug companies hate you, since you won't be buying their drugs if you use these natural remedies. A wonderful book, and even today, well worth reading.

Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (1/09)

Through wonderful storytelling, the author has given readers inspiration and guidelines to help in all relationships we encounter. Storytelling, as the author states, is a way to impart wisdom without sounding condescending or judgmental.

How long have we as individuals kept anger and hatred in our heart and felt we were justified in doing it? Must we always be right? Do you wonder why we are sick and depressed?

Through personal examples of ordinary people, the author explains the dilemmas they encounter- cancer, depression, alcoholism, unhealthy relationships - and how they overcame these obstacles by letting go of the past and wanting to make people pay for their pain. Ms. McCarthy does say that not everyone will be able to, or are willing, to do this. It really is about soul searching and making changes within oneself. You cannot change others.

The one theme that played throughout the book is "You deserve to be happy and be loved, but first you must love yourself." How many of us can say we love ourselves? How many times do we blame others for our failures or negative experiences?

"The Power of the Possible" by Auriela McCarthy is one book that readers can read over and over. There is so much wisdom in this book it certainly will make one wonder, search and find their true soul.

I really recommend this book to all women thinking about getting pregnant a bit later in life, you don't have to wait to 35. I had my daughter at age 33 two years ago and found it the most challenging thing I've ever done! I've just recommended the book to two friends going through the same thing. There are hundreds of pregnancy books but in this there's lots of really useful information about antenatal testing and how to choose a birth plan that I would have liked to have had before Maddy was born, and the authors talk to you in a very positive way. I give it five stars.JAYNE(and RICHARD)

Mature motherhood and Parenting.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-16
The world of motherhood, most especially in developed countries, has undergone profound changes in the latter half of the 20th century. For the first time in history, many women elected to delay starting a family until they completed their education, had secured their professional path, found the right partner and/or had the financial means to nurture and educate a child. Many of us including myself know women who waited until after thirty or later to have their first baby and possibly some who continued having children into their forties. My mother was thirty-four when I was born and thirty-six when she gave birth to my younger brother. My maternal grandmother who lived in rural Texas continued having children until well into her forties and a first cousin remarried in her late thirties and found herself a mother at the age of thirty-seven and later, at thirty-nine.

In addition to massive social changes that have stopped, at least in some quarters, the finger-pointing at women who postponed motherhood until they were ready, advancements in the world of gynecology have made profound changes for women who were previously infertile. There are now myriad options including in vitro fertilization and egg implantation that allow women to give birth in their fifties and sixties and I'm sure a seventy-year-old mom may be just a few years away!

The doctors, Michele C. Moore, M.D. and Caroline M. de Costa, M.D., have added a fascinating new book to their "Mid Life, New Life" series. "Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five" is a must have for any mature woman considering giving birth or adopting an infant, a non-judgmental, beautifully written work by two medical professionals who have experienced late pregnancies themselves. Dr. Moore gave birth to her son at thirty-five while Dr. de Costa, after having already having five children, found herself changing the diapers of two very healthy and vibrant children in her early forties.

Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five looks at every aspect of mature parenting including available testing for the health of the mother, options for assistance with conception, adoption and a major concern for mature mothers-to-be, screening for chromosomal abnormalities. They also look at multiple births, a common occurrence with the increased use of fertility drugs to assist in motherhood. The book is written in clear but concise language that breaks down complicated medical procedures and statistical information into advice that any layman and most importantly, laywoman, can both comprehend and use. Doctors Moore and de Costa also give multiple scenarios based on their own case histories and personal experiences as mature moms. This book is a must-have for anyone contemplating parenting an infant after thirty-five whether through birth or adoption and will be just as useful for expectant fathers as it is for hopeful mothers.

I am a 39-year-old single woman with a 5-year-old son, and I desperately want another child in my life. Unlike so many books that focus on couples, and/or first-time moms, this book covers many, many scenarios (including my own) thoroughly, professionally, and with wonderful sensitivity.
The practical information is complete and accessible. It addresses most if not all of the potential complications and outcomes of an AMA pregnancy, while short vignettes about other women's experiences interspersed throughout the volume keep the reading very easy and interesting.

The book was suggested by a co-worker. It's good to have books with images that my son can relate to (ie a brown face like his). The mirror in the back is a nice touch.

I think this is a sweet little book. We bought it for our son who we are adopting from Ethiopia. It's a nice little book for reading to babies and small toddlers. I like the artwork.

Great way to appreciate heritage but needs slight improvement

It is a wonderful book to help children appreciate their heritage. The text is well-written.

The people and closenes in the illustrations are beautiful. However, I am disappointed in the quality of the illustrations.

I hope they make a new edition with better illustrations by the time we have our second child.

This book is great. I bought this for my son shortly after he was born. 11 months later, this is his favorite. It's a great depiction of a father and son and it's a good way for baby to start learning about himself (i.e. Eyes, Lips, Hair, etc.) And the last page has a reflective mirror so he can look at himself. He was physically drawn to his own reflection. Now when he gets to the end, he looks at his face and laughs. You and your little one will love this book!

This delightful story with equally delightful illustrations is a rare gem. I like the way the baby is taught about having a pretty brown face. I love the loving way the father and child look at one another and interact. It is for all races and it does an excellent job of showing love for a baby and many children will want to explore their own faces after reading and/or hearing this lovely story. Be sure to check out "Baby Dance" by Ann Taylor, et al. as well.

This is a great reference for people wanting to cook a little healthier. There are a host of suggestions on how to convert existing recipes to a lower fat menu and there are many illustrations to support the many tips and charts. You will learn how to substitute lower fat ingredients for butter and oil without compromising the taste of your food. The authors discuss the many types of rice, flour, grains, herbs, spices etc. and guide you in selecting the appropriate one for your particular needs. In short, this book is a cooking class in healthy living. Buy this one...you will use it often!

P.S. Weight Watchers' clients will particularly like this book. The nutritional information necessary for calculating Winning Points is included with every recipe and you will have a huge number of dishes that you may prepare within your program.

This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book.

I've had this cookbook for over a year and it is without doubt the best one in my collection. The recipes are easy to follow and taste great. I've tried numerous ones over the year and every one I've tried has come out perfectly! In addition, there are pages of tips on how to prepare foods that any cook can find helpful. As part of a total weight loss program, this book is a must!

You won't get bored.

Superbly organized and presented eating and fitness tips from a Low-Carb / Primal / Paleo point of view -- work with what evolution equipped us to want and to do, don't work against it.

Full of startling info and surprising advice, much of which goes against today's conventional wisdom. Help yourself to loads of good fats; don't drag yourself down by overdoing the cardio; be active but take a goodly number of days off; enjoy those egg yolks. Screw the usual Food Pyramid.

I'm living pretty Primal myself these days and it's working for me.

Sisson's a very likable and enthusiastic coach, and the book is a fun and fast read in a very popular mode. I can't emphasize enough, though, what miracles of research and information-processing the book represents. It could be the only Paleo-Primal book you'll ever need to read.

When do you stay up until 2 am to finish reading a book? When it resonates with you completely, that's when. Mr. Sisson's book beautifully skewers conventional wisdom with his well-researched and light-hearted advice to seekers of the healthy life. Sure to fire up much-needed controversy among entrenched believers in the status quo. More power to him! Read this book and be shaken up.

Great resource to live a healthy and fit lifestyle. Easy to read as well as entertaining. I recommend it as a good gift to someone who needs a alternative resource to get back on track with healthy living. The best part of the author's blueprint is that you can eat well and tastefully, and workout briefly but intensely. He knocks what people dread the most about healthy lifestyle: long workouts and finicky meal-plans. Grok on!!

A Doctor's Perspective

The breakthrough book, "The Primal Blueprint", is a new and complete approach to intelligent health maintenance. It is a study in physiology, suitable as suggested reading in any medical school. It could save your life. The presentation is unique and attractive. There is an abundance of common sense from an experienced source. Sisson outlines ten laws to live by. These cover the demands of nutrition, exercise, race training, weight management, and family life. His approach to nutrition is different and he boldly challenges official medical beliefs. He disputes the role of dietary saturated fat in causation of arteriosclerosis, the role of cholesterol in promotion of heart disease, and the costly over-promotion of expensive, potentially toxic statin drugs. He criticizes our massive overeating of refined carbohydrates and urges avoidance of grains, cereals, bread and sugar. There is specific recommendation for "primal" food including more natural healthy fats and meats, fruits, veggies, and nuts. This fare parallels the food of paleo or ancient man ("primal".) The nutrition breakthrough rests on sound principles of avoidance of excess insulin states, and encouragement of fat metabolism for energy. The book answers the needs of athletes, fitness buffs, the overweight population, and all intelligent health seekers. Walter M. Kearns, M.D.
