My doctor suggested this book, and this non-diet approach and I am grateful that he did. This book changed my life. It has not only helped me improve my relationship with food, it's improved my relationship with myself and with others. It has improved the over-all quality of my life. I will never diet again. This book easily explains the reasons why diets don't work from real-life perspectives. I was able to relate so well to the people who shared their experiences. The journey has been amazing. If you have struggled with food or eating disorders this book can change your life as well. It's probably the best purchase I have ever made.

What to do when you'd rather die than go on another diet!

Okay, sorry, maybe the title of my review was a little extreme but that was how I was starting to feel last year. For the last 23 years of my life I had been in a never ending battle with my weight and food. Every extra ounce of energy went into planning my next meal, wondering when I could eat again, dreaming and longing for the foods I wasn't "allowed" to eat and worrying about how many calories I'd consumed.

After losing and gaining the same 80 pounds twice, I lost 80 pounds again and was well on my way to gaining them all back for the third time. The thought of having to go on another diet filled me with despair and dread; I just knew I couldn't do it again. And, then by some small (or maybe big) miracle, Dr Michelle May and the "Am I Hungry?" program was introduced into my life.

Have you ever watched a baby eat? When they are done eating there is no way, no how you can make them eat without forcing them and in a similar manner, they will let you know EXACTLY when they are hungry and need to eat. As adults, we still have that inner wisdom in us - the little voice that tells us when to eat and when to stop when we've had enough. But, for me, years of dieting had beat that out of me. I could no longer tell when I was hungry and I sure as heck could not tell when I was full.

Let me tell you, when you can't feel or hear your own body's hunger and satiety signals, it sure makes it hard to stop eating when you've had enough!! As a result, I was constantly starving myself to lose weight and then overeating my way (because I couldn't hear my body tell me when to stop) back into weight gain. Am I Hungry? explained why diets never have and never will work as a long term solution. Am I Hungry? helped me get back in touch with my internal hunger cues and helped me learn how to tune back into that inner wisdom my body has about how much, what and when to eat. When you listen to your body, it will tell you EXACTLY what it needs!

So far I've lost a little weight and it continues to come off slowly. But, that is okay with me because I have found a way to eat and a way to live that I know will last me for a lifetime!

If diets haven't worked, Definately Try This!

I have been waiting my entire life for this book! I have been on many diets and read many diet and nutrution books. This book teaches you what all those thin people naturally do. It explains why diets don't work and how they set us up to flucuate between restrictive eating and over eating by depriving us and how that messes up our metabolism setting us up for failure. It teaches that All Foods Fit and how to live an Active Lifestyle with out punishing ourselves with food and exercise. It even touches on how to cope with Emotional Eating however, I do still believe that there are deeper psychological reasons why we emotionally overeat and some may need further work in this area with a professional. I did find the nuturitional and exercise information news that I already knew, but she helps clarify some misconceptions around some of the diets out there. I highly recommend taking the 8 week teleclass on their website - It helps incorporate all of the tools in this book and is definately worth the money -(After all aren't you worth it?). I highly recommend this book over any other diet/nutrition book out there! I will be getting rid of all of my other diet books on my shelf and incorporating all of the tools for life.

This book is one of those best kept secrets. I was amazed at the amount of info in this book. For anyone who has ever dieted and lost, this book is for you -- I mean it really is. I have battled weight gain for many years, and this is the first book that told me to master my hunger cravings. I am one of those people who often goes all day without eating, because as soon as I do, I cannot stop. Something kicks in and then I become a eating machine. This book stops that cycle permanently, and frees oneself of the curse.

same material, but more difficult to read ...

There are many books out on intuitive eating, and this is one of them. The ideas laid out in the book are not new, but are very good. I have read many books on intuitive eating, and have found others (Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works, The Rules of "Normal" Eating: A Commonsense Approach for Dieters, Overeaters, Undereaters, Emotional Eaters, and Everyone in Between!, Fat Is a Feminist Issue, Why Weight? A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating) much easier to read. This book is highly repetitive. There are eight chapters in the book, and each one deals with eating, nutrition, and exercise. I think this format would work better as a class, in which there was repetition at each session. As a book, however, it didn't work for me. Furthermore, as a person who has been hyper-focused on my eating for most of my life, I know more about nutrition and exercise physiology than most experts, having started reading peer-reviewed research on these areas at an early age. I don't need assistance understanding nutrition and exercise facts. I need help understanding how to eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm not.

So, while this book has some valuable information, I think that there are books that lay out the same information in a much more accessible format.

The Energy Medicine Kit is good on its own, but even better with Donna Eden's book, Energy Medicine. The kit's DVD allows you to see the movements -- and use in practice -- during an actual audience session. I have attended a presention by Donna Eden and I have to say that the DVD is very true to her session in person. For those who are interested in exploring energy this is a great asset.

The quick and easy tapping exercises in Donna Eden's Energy Medicine Kit have consistently resulted in better sleep, an easier time of going to sleep, lifted depression, cleared my mind, increased memory, energized my body in a non-stressful, non impactful way, increased coordination, increased my ability to understand instructions, information and conversations without getting muddled or distracted, and cleared emotional distress and stress. I am astounded by their simplicity and quick application. The easy to follow DVD and CD are clear and concise. This product is not only for those who are energy sensitive, but effective for anyone wanting to feel more centered, less vulnerable, less stressed, renewed, clear minded and clear hearted. If 10 stars were available, I would give it 10 stars. In only a few minutes of doing her 5 Thumps 'enercizes', my entire attitude, emotional state and physical well being shifts into joy, groundedness and calm vitality. The DVD and CD include most of what is on her Youtube videos, plus others that are not on the videos. Much to my surprise, the exercise of spinning the included crystal brings a great sense of peace and calmness. The Amazon price is excellent. A great gift to humanity and for anyone longing for a greater feeling of well-being.

Excellent book!
I have lifted on and off for over 30 years, and this book provides great exercises that are efficient in terms of time for the overall impact. Core exercises are central to this book and after a few times really make you feel good when you do them.
Even my wife became an advocate and is improving the strength of her back, which has given her problems.
Only critique is the book could provide some more details on the exercises and some more pictures. A DVD would be a great addition. Also, I think there is not enough emphasis on cardio.
You need to invest some time to understand the exercises and get your routine down; after a few weeks, it becomes faster and easier and worth the time investment.

A book you should not be without!

There are three books in my workout library which I consider indispensable: Beyond Bodybuilding by Pavel Tsatsouline, Ultimate Flexibility by Sang H. Kim, and this book, Men's Health Power Training by Coach Dos. This book is outstanding in every way: explanations of power movements and why you should do them, illustrations, and examples of workouts for Hypertrophy, strength, and general fitness, as well as workouts you can create on your own. I've been using the principals in this book for 4 months now and have seen remarkable gains in strenth, size, and fat loss. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

I try not to review items that I do not actually own, however I have done a lot of research on the book (including forum chats with the author and others on the program) and it became clear that this workout, while very effective, is very hard to do in a home gym. I was very close to buying the book. People who use this program seem to rave about it, but at the same time the program itself prevents more people from doing the program.

I work out in a home gym, but I do not have one of the key pieces of equipment that is pretty essential to the program - a power rack. This is a simple, but very large piece of equipment that I do not have room for in my home gym. After spending close to $2,000 on home gym equipement (and getting very good results with that equipment) I am not willing to a) buy a gym membership, or b) replace the equipment that I am already getting good results with.

This is a bit of a shame because I really like the principals and ideas that the book is founded on, as well as the ability to design your own program. Perhaps one day when I move into a bigger house and have room for a power rack and stacks of free weights, I will give this workout a shot. That being said right now this workout is not for me, but for those who have access to all of the equipment (and space... you also need higher ceilings! My basement ceiling is a bit low for some of the exercises too) you will have better luck with the program.

Coach Dos has really impressed me.

I have purchased many books relating to strength training, including a few published under the "Men's Health" name, as this one is. This book is easily the finest out of the bunch. Other reviewers have compared it to the "Choose Your Own Adventure" children's book series and, to a certain extent, the basic premise is the same: Coach Dos gives you the tools and then lets you formulate your own workout. While 12 weeks worth of workouts are provided based on three different program designs (Total Fitness, Hypertrophy, and Strength Gain) the primary focus of this book is on allowing you to adapt the workouts to your own tastes and goals. You don't like doing power cleans? No problem - Coach Dos provides you with a dozen alternatives that will hit the same muscles. Bench presses hurt your wrists? Again, no problem - you can choose from several alternatives. Let's say you only have time to hit the weight room twice a week instead of three or four times. This book includes a template for you as well. It also includes extensive sections on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and less extensive sections on nutrition and the like.

The above alone would only make the book "good" as opposed to "great." I became aware of the final factor roughly a month after I started the plan. Like any book, "Power Training" raises a few questions that are left unanswered. "Men's Health" has set up a subforum devoted to "Power Training" on its online discussion forums. I had a question about rest days that wasn't explained in the book to my satisfaction and asked around on the subforum, hoping another user could point me in the right direction. Within a few hours I had an answer from Coach Dos himself. My follow-up question was answered the following day. I have seen fitness authors answer readers' questions in the past, generally in the form of a general update on Amazon. This is the first time I have actually had an author personally walk me through an answer, in his free time, several months after the book had been published. Most authors could be expected (not unreasonably) to move on relatively soon after publication. Not this one.

If you're looking to shake up your lifting routine or are merely curious about power lifting, this book is worth every penny. Between the solid information included between the covers and the willingness of the author to provide individualized follow-ups, you really can't go wrong with "Power Training."

I've lost 24lbs in 5 weeks so far on the Sonoma Diet and my palate hasn't been bored yet! The recipes in this cookbook are well written, easy to follow, contain ingredients easy to find in most grocery stores, and produce great results. Although most of the recipes feature cilantro, parsley, marjoram, rosemary or cumin as flavor enhancers, you'll find a variety of flavors in this book. In fact, no two recipes taste alike - which is more than I can say for many other "diet" cookbooks I've tried.

My family has particularly enjoyed the soup recipes in this book, our favorites being the spicy black bean chili and tomato with bread soup. Also good are the flavorful, hearty salads. This book features a lot more fish recipes than the original Sonoma Diet book does, but it is still pretty light on Vegetarian items. Some of the vegetarian items just did not turn out at all (barley risotto, for example, never cooked all the way despite adding more than 10 minutes to the suggested cooking time). However, the great recipes far outshine the not-so-great.

Bottom line: Well worth the money, nice variety of flavors, sound nutritional advice. A little light on vegetarian dishes, but overall a great cookbook.

WHY THE WEIGHT? DARE TO BE GREAT! is like reading a Bible for those who want to lose weight. It is so inspirational that it should be kept out on a table to read and reread when one needs to be reminded of the multitude of ideas offered the readers. For those of us who have weight problems, it should be in a obvious place to use as a way of life.
Its contents are more than any reader could ever expect, without a page of disappointment.

In this book, Jean Krueger talks about eating in response to "loss". She has had some profound losses in her life including the deaths of both parents and 3 brothers......but she expands the concept of "loss" to other areas as well.

A second point is Krueger's philosophy that weight loss is not only about the pounds. It is about adding things into your life. When you are overweight, you have no energy. No zest. No joy of living. She urges you to examine your life. Take on new challenges and make a list of things you want to do and start doing them step by step.

In my own life, I suffered "loss" of self esteem when I was unable to balance the stress of being a perfectionist at work and trying to be a wife and mother at home. I ended up taking a transfer in order to survive and felt embarrassed and ashamed because I hadn't been able to handle it all. My self esteem fell to an all time low. Eventually I retired and again felt the "loss" of an exhausting but exciting career.

Later, I fell from a ladder and suffered a debilitating injury which put me on medication and laid me up for more than a year. Food was an easy solution to both losses. Besides, I deserved it and it made me feel better..... temporarily.

I reached a point when I felt my life was over. I became depressed and discouraged and withdrew from friends and activities.

Weight has been a problem all my life. I have tried many weight loss programs and the scale has yoyo'd up and down. But when I found this book and started reading it, I wrote in my journal, "could this really be the time?" In other words, could I not only take off the weight but resume a meaningful life?

My mantra has become, "I am determined to take back my life." I have lost 10% of my body weight, am about half way to my goal and am doing more things and enjoying them more than I have for years. I am again in touch with old friends and am helping to plan a reunion of current and retired employees. I eat out all the time...and make good choices much of the time. I walk alot and go to the gym several times a week and my husband and I have completed several 5K fund raisers. I have joined a quilting guild and taken an adult education sewing class. I am in training as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

I have been fairly diligent...but not perfect. For me, I no longer look for the "quick fix" to lose weight. Weight control is now more a change of mind set and life style and I owe my motivation to Jean Krueger and her insightful book.

I dealt with the grief the right way -not eating my way through it. Thank you for everything, Jean.

I can totally see why my yoga teacher trainer pick out this book to be required reading. It is very well assembled with great picture of well respected Yogi's. The form of the positions leave nothing to be desired. When reading other Yoga books it isn't uncommon for me to wish I could crawl into the page and correct the posture of the people in the photos. In this book I just wanted to be as talented and perfect and the people in the pictures. The descriptions of the positions and the subtleties of what the pose requires was well written. It isn't unusual for me to use the same phrasing as they do in the book because some cues can't be better said. Perhaps I'll out grow this book, but as a beginning teacher, I learned a lot from it. I love the amount of detail that the book gives because there is always more that you can accomplish in any Yoga pose, and you must work at the level of the students you're teaching and remind them of things that may be automatic for you.

A lovely formatted book that has clear photographs. It is useful for the student at home to develop a personal home practice aswell as the teacher for a 'flash card' inspiration for a class. I like the diamond guide that indicates the degree of difficulty of the pose. It is also wonderful to have the asana name in devanagari, sanskrit and english. This is a classic hatha book that is a 'must have'. Camella Nair - author of "Aqua Kriya Yoga".

This is an excellent book for home practice of yoga, provided you have moderate experience through classes and previous home study. The photos and explanations of asanas are very clear, though the practitioner may not possess the same degree of flexibility as the models. The asanas cover a reasonable range of difficulty: there's some challenge, but a diligent student would have hopes of learning all of them. The scattered "reflections" are extremely helpful. The textual explanation of underlying yoga principles, though good, could be expanded somewhat, but one can't expect everything in a book this size.
Comparing with Iyengar's "Light on Yoga", the present book is shorter, more user-friendly, has a more modern look, contains fewer asanas, and has less (but more easily readable) discussions of yoga principles. Serious students will likely purchase both in the long run, but the present book is a better first buy.

First time Yoga practicer. Purchased this book for an introductory Yoga course but never used it in class. However I do use it now that I am home alone. It has WONDERFUL IMAGES and DIRECTIONS. It also has "lessons" for you and natural "remedies" for back aches, head aches, etc. The yoga poses in this book helped me relieve my lower back pain in less than a week! I Love this book!

Please read this book! In the long run, your cat will thank you. My husband and I have been bemoaning how often our cats throw up after eating. It didn't seem like this used to happen. Then we realized that we used to feed them canned food, and we've gotten lazy (and influenced by the big pet food companies) and have been feeding them dry food for several years. Thanks to Dr. Hodgkins for helping us remember this, and for explaining exactly WHY it happens. No more dry food and carbs for our feline 'kids'.

Must read for all cat owners

This is a wonderful book for everyone that cares about their pets. Nutrition is everything. Garbage in, garbage out. Everything the author says about cats also largely applied to dog nutrition as well. Feed your dogs raw or at the very least no carb canned food. I'm glad someone is setting all of us straight about how we have become so disconnected in the way we feed our pets, relying completely on the pet food industry to tell us what is right and wrong in caring for our pets.

I own a 4 year cat and new puppy and I began researching pet nutrition when I got my puppy because I felt she just didn't respond well to the various foods I was giving her, either walking away from a full bowl of dry kibble or scratching consistently. I have always fed my cat a high quality wet food such as pet guard, merrick or wellness. Though she looks great, no shedding or health issues, I realized recently that she was starting to look older quite quickly. Once I started them both on a raw diet my puppy took to it immediately, but my cat turns up her nose to it. If it didn't come from a can she wasn't interested. Of course I listened to everyone that said you shouldn't feed your pets table scraps so all she knows is a can. After a frustrating week of switching her to a completely raw diet I found the trick - pretend like you are feeding her canned food by taking the can out of the fridge and opening it. Switch and bait, she started eating her raw food with no problems. Crazy cat. I noticed almost immediately that she has a bit more energy and her coat is so shiny and soft. I will never go back to commercial foods. For those of you trying to switch from dry kibble to wet food this might be a harder task then canned to raw, be very very patient.

In "Your Cat" Dr. Elisabeth Hodgkins accomplished a great work of alarming cat owners about the danger of feeding not only inappropriate but diseases inducing diet. This book should be in the library of everyone who deals with cats but especially veterinarians, as the first thing seen in their clinics are bags of dry food filled with high % of carbohydrate. Dr. Hodgkins convincingly writes about the importance of meat versus grain in food for cats and about the detrimental effect the wrong diet has on cat's health. It is written not only with advanced knowledge but also with a lot of love and concern.

In my own experience I almost lost a male cat having urinary infections and bladder blockage until I changed his diet to raw meat, several years ago. Her book reinforced my believe that this is the only correct way to feed a cat. In addition she gives invaluable advices about the care of kittens, geriatric cats and many practical advices for common health problems. On every page one finds information that is to be underlined for easy reference.

Thanks to Dr. Hodgkins many cats will be having more enjoyable and healthy lives. Thank you, Dr. Hodgkins for this phenomenal book.

I received this book about 30 days ago. I totally changed my outlook on my type 2 diabetes. I went to the doctor and according to my blood work, I was averaging around 300 for my daily numbers. After following the advice in the book, I now have my numbers back under control and have not been over about 120 since changing my lifestyle. Now I know that I am in control of my situation and will be around to see my kids grow up. I beleive this book has literally saved my life. I've already put in a pre-order for the cookbook.

What I learned from this book is that Sugar will kill you and stop eating it. I have diabetes in my family and I have been eating sugar since I was a kid. I eat sugar laden treats to comfort me during stressful periods, which is all day long. When I read this book I realized that I had better stop my addiction to sugar or else I will end up with diabetes. There are a few changes to make in one's day and it requires fruits and vegetables. Amazingly the book does not promote meat eating as a source of protein. I wish there were more recipes in this book and a lot less hard to find ingredients. I want to rely on ingredients that I can easily find at Safeway or Bel Air stores. If I can't find them easily, I won't bother looking for or using it. Give me a few more "sweet" options than "floral honey." There are a few times of the month where I just have to have it. Also, give me an option for stressful times at work where I want something to chomp or crunch and will give me a little "caffeine-like high" to get through times where I am tired. Also, spare me the lecture on fitness and mental vitality; you are preaching to the choir. I am sure most of your patients already know all the exercises and it is important to be positive. I want solutions to problems and how people attained them. For example, when you have children how does one carve out time to do their exercises consistently? How do you fight a sugar addiction? What if you want to sweeten your oats with something other than strawberries (not in season) and pecans? What do you snack on?

I have read and used the menus/recipes in the book for a couple of weeks. Initially, I was hesitant as the diet is completely vegan, but was surprised to discover that the recipes are very tasty and mostly easy to make.

The authors present a number of ideas new to me, such as eliminating snacks in favor of hearty meals, working toward the goal of a very light dinner (eating when you are active) and substantial breakfasts and lunches.

Most of the ingredients in the recipes are relatively easy to come by for most, but some people might have to resort to online ordering if they live away from a fully stocked healthy food store. The diet is based on whole grains, whole foods and lots of complementary proteins. Fat and salt are kept low. I feel I am getting healthier and gradually the diet is having a positive effect on my bood sugar levels. I recommend the book.

Ms. Ramin's book is a fun, informative and sometimes scary ride down memory lane. One part scientific research and another part a personal quest of what was happening to her, she does a fine job of balancing the two in an easy to read style. It helped me to understand certain aspects of aging. Well worth reading for some peace of mind.

This book is an extremely entertaining and informative look at how our brains function and what we can do to keep them doing so. I've bought numerous copies and given them to various 50+-something friends, all of whom have enjoyed the book as much as I did. Highly recommended.

This is a fascinating book by a fabulous writer, who has put her finger on a hot button topic for all of us approaching that age when sometimes obvious answers don't come quite as quickly and car keys become elusive objects.
I found the anecdotal and scientific passages illuminating, and felt some (cold!) comfort from the fact that so many of my 45-50+ peers are experiencing similar memory stops n' starts. My friends and family and I have definitely started to heed the book's practical advice given on how to boost and maintain memory efficiency. I would heartily recommend this timely publication to all those in the big group that it addresses, IF you can remember to buy it the next time you're on Amazon or in a bookstore! Write "buy" on a post-it note and stick it on your computer or in your wallet!

Carved in Sand has graced my "Top 10 List of Books to Read" and the stack on my nightstand for the past several months.
This past weekend, it made its way into my hands and I can't put it down! Solidly planted into my "fifty-something" years, my thoughts turn toward aging in the best of health and with dignity.
Memory loss and the inability to focus a big concern that hovers over many of us.
Your book is a gift.
One I plan to give to sisters, cousins & friends.
