The pictures and captions make learning the basics very easy. I'm now ready to take a Palates class without feeling awkward and uncomfortable. I recommend it for anyone interested in training in Palates. A must book to read before taking a class. 14176612165112007-09-06great travel or miss the studio solutionGreat tool for travel or when you miss the studio. I am just a pilates student, so having something to hold my hand and direct me is needed, so just flipping through the deck in the suggested order has been great. I don't think its a beginners tool because the descriptions somewhat assume you already know the basics IMHO. I had a cheat sheet I made myself with little drawings and notes, but this is so much easier.14176612164442006-08-31For beginnersThis basic manual for Pilates is especially helpful because of the cautions about avoiding poor form while you're doing the exercises. The limitations of any book attempting to teach you how to do physical movements is offset by the authors' knowledge of what mistakes typical beginners make.141766121635122006-08-13Not good for a complete novice.I'm training for a certain activity and was told that Pilates would be great to do because many people in the sport do it. I knew _absolutely nothing_ about Pilates. I asked around at local fitness clubs but couldn't find any instructors. Lacking local instruction, I bought this book based on the recommendations here.

The many pictures and instructions for the actual exercises were very easy to follow. However, the information in the introduction (including an explanation of the 6 basic principles) left me so very frustrated and confused! The book says to flatten your lower spine against the mat ('neutral spine') by 'lengthening' your spine without moving your hips or other body parts...but that's physiologically impossible! Does she not understand the basic mechanics of the body? And 'scooping' is described as feeling like a corset being tightened around your waist...which is only helpful if you've worn a corset before. Since the book implies that the exercises do little good if you don't have these principles right, the good, clear instructions on the actual exercises are probably useless to me because I don't clearly understand most of the basic principles.

I also doubt some of the claims of Pilates now that I've learned more about the system. I'm sure the system works fairly well at 'core' strength training for most people who use it, but some of the other claims seem a bit mystical in nature. If you love this method, that's great. If you understand the basic principles of Pilates, then this is probably a great book for you. Otherwise, I just can't recommend this book. I'll stick with "Straighter, Stronger, Leaner, Longer" by Renee Daniels which works the 'core' muscles as well as every last bit of the rest of your body.1417661216521212006-03-02A treasure chest of Pilates exercises for a hard bodyJoseph H. Pilates, the German inventor of the Pilates exercise method must be smiling in the heavens. The lifelong pacifist who was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880... devoted his life to the study of physical education. He moved to the United States in 1926 and afterwards became active with the New York City Ballet. "Pilates; body in motion," by Alycea Ungaro of Tribeca Bodyworks is a treasure chest of Pilate exercises for a hard body.

Mr. Pilates passed away in 1967 but not without leaving behind his philosophy of form. He established six basic principles...breath, concentration, control, centering, precision and flow in order for men and women to attain, "the inherited birthright of physical perfection." This book is comprehensive. It includes an introduction and four exercise programs. The introduction and beginner's program are short...but the intermediate and advanced programs provide a wealth of drills.

Please be warned...this is difficult stuff (especially for the over 50 crowd)...even for those who frequent the gym on a regular basis. The key to success is to follow the instructions carefully and gradually work your body into shape. If you rush the program your body will be talking to you (with pain or soreness) the following morning. At the risk of being redundant...do not fast-forward the exercise unless you are in outstanding condition...the Pilates school of thought looks easy but is a challenge to master correctly. The photos in this slim book are excellent. Moreover, the narrative is clear and succinct. Highly recommended.

Bert Ruiz

The Pilates Deck provides a simple, take-anywhere exercise program that delivers a lean, sculpted body, increased abdominal and lower back strength, and improved posture in weeks! Full-color, step-by-step photographs guide you through three complete programs, leading you to the next step in fitness whether you are a beginner or an experienced Pilates student.076790396XThe Pilates Body: The Ultimate At-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--Without Machines075663357515 Minute Everyday Pilates (Book and DVD)B000069YWPClassical Pilates Technique - The Complete Mat Workout Series English & Spanish (Modified Basic / Basic / Intermediate / Advanced / Super Advanced)0736056238Pilates0767919823Your Ultimate Pilates Body® Challenge: At the Gym, on the Mat, and on the Move4647Health, Mind & Body: Exercise & Fitness: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books298657Health, Mind & Body: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books4653Yoga4645Exercise & Fitness10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books282934Pilates4645Exercise & Fitness10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books4728Reference10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0736056238http://www.amazon.com/Pilates-Rael-Isacowitz/dp/0736056238%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D07360562387899http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4102CC9JQXL._SL75_.jpg5875http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4102CC9JQXL._SL160_.jpg123160http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4102CC9JQXL._SL500_.jpg385500Rael IsacowitzPaperback613.7197807360562361000736056238EnglishEnglishEnglish11001995USD$19.95Human Kinetics Publishers1336Book2006-08-30Human Kinetics PublishersHuman Kinetics PublishersPilates2058401075USD$10.75858USD$8.5846120011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewzSMqyvcrZyZc1EOoYX3cP5lqhx8EWRSyoA9yzUB103z5F2KLueYezLFkmfHbR%2FGeC21P7UoJMcwLAfsHdZUbpQ%3D%3D1357USD$13.57Usually ships in 24 hours5.022507360562385112008-02-15VERY THOROUGH Wow. This is one thorough treatment of Pilates. Whether you're a beginner who needs to start out with the basics, or an experienced practitioner who needs some of the more advanced moves, it's all here for you. You can use this book for mat work or for the various types of apparatus work. You get a basic idea of which muscle groups get worked by the various exercises, and the proper visualizations to get you where you need to be. A very well-written, easy to understand, easy to follow guide. I highly recommend this book.07360562383232008-02-08Pilates - multiple waysNo other book this comprehensive can beat the price of Rael's Pilates book. This is a good book for people who practises pilates in various ways including the cadillac. It is a step-by-step guide to the pilates exercises. But honestly how many people who do pilates on the reformer goes back to the mat? I just bought a reformer and it's worked out for me better than the mat exercises. It's nice that it offers everything within the book but if you want to focus, Ellie's book is better. I use this book for reference but in terms of reformer exercises Ellie's book cover pretty much everything including the box and stick. That's just my experience.07360562385112007-12-30Pilates is one of the most comprehensive book on PilatesThe book is well written, comprehensive and very informative. The philosophy behind the work of Joe Pilates and repertoire is first explained in detail. the vast Pilates system of exercises from mat to Reformer and all the other basic apparatus, is then broken down and presented in logical chunks that really make sense. I am both a student of Pilates and a trainer. I loved the organization of the work presented by an author whose authoritative knowledge and love of the Pilates Method is infectious. Rael I. explains the context within which each exercise works, in relationship to the whole body, and then explains how to incorporate it in a Pilates session. I love the book, and I carry it around with me for inspiration. 07360562385332007-08-17The Real McCoyThis is a real pilates book for those serious about the study. Beautifully written and illustrated. I'd also recommend the author's videos.
07360562385892007-07-21Authoritative on the science, art, beauty, and experience of PilatesThe author stuck with a simple template in writing his book that allowed him to convey his ideas clearly and gracefully. Each lesson in the book starts with an anatomical target under "Muscle Focus" and the "Objectives" of serving those muscles. The lessons end with "Imagery" that deals with the feeling and the mental execution of the desired motion.

The author refrained from venturing into areas outside his domain of specialized expertise such as nutrition or unrelated topics, which added to his credibility and emphasized the depth of indulging in the art of Pilates. The extensive number, simple content, and logical sequence of the photographs, which are properly labeled and placed in each lesson, all makes the book an easy read and useful tool for learning. Above all, the author himself demonstrates his role as a model for the reader.

The book has a brief history of Pilates, its benefits, and its principles. Those are grouped under ten principles that address awareness, balance, breathing, concentration, body centering, gaining control, efficiency of motion, flow of energy, precision, and harmony. The main emphasis of Pilates practice is described in terms of regional anatomy that is brought under the control of the mind such that it serves the purpose of skillful mobility.

The book falls into twelve chapters that deal with enhancing the mind and body, alignment and movement, and the different methods of accomplishing the objectives of motion control. The different methods entail: Mat work that falls into 70 pages, Universal Reformer that spans about 100 pages, Cadillac 40 pages, Wanda Chair 20 pages, Barrels 20 pages, Ped-a-Pul 7 pages, Arm Chair 7 pages, and Magic Circle 14 pages. The last chapter lumps all exercises in sample routines that facilitate quick referencing.

The major drawback of the book is the use of advanced tools in some lessons that might not be available to the majority of readers. Yet, the author has little to do with what others could afford and should not take the blame for such hurdle.

The priceless gain attained from reading this book is the development of conscious awareness of each part of the body and being able to survey what goes wrong on time to enhance performance. And, performance exactness is what the author is expert in teaching and in practicing.

Mohamed F. I, too, have been increasingly curious about the Reformer on the Mat exercises, and though I've seen bits and pieces in other workouts, I haven't seen one that offers them in a cohesive system. This one does, showing not only the sequence the exercises should be performed in but also the different levels for each exercise (although most of them are quite challenging).

I do still have to shake my head and laugh at the need to market the system for men- anyone who has ever tried the Pilates pushups, Side Bends or Leg Pull Ups should already know that classical Pilates demands- and builds- upper body strength. However, in the text where Lyons notes that some of these exercises are exclusively for men- or individuals with significant upper body strength- I mostly agree. I happily cede the very tricky Headstand variations to male practitioners and instructors, although I will note that they are very similar to a number of movements from the Ashtanga Primary Series.

This is an excellent resource for male or female practitioners and instructors, and if it finally gets people to realize that Pilates is a real workout and not just a souped up abs and stretch routine, so much the better.

00608207725002008-02-27Excellent!This book is exactly what I needed. Exercises are well explained. No boring stuff around, goes straight to the point. I already feel better... 00608207725112008-01-23Great workout for Body and MindI am a great fan of no equipment/body weight exercises. It is amazing what level of fitness can be achieved by following the exercises as outlined in D. Lyon's book and i fully endorse the other positive reviews on this book. The book is very user friendly with precise descriptions of the exercises and specific recommendations for men with tight hamstrings, hips, etc. It's very easy to build up your program step by step over time and you will see results very quickly (at least I did in terms of core strength, slimmer waistline and more muscle tone).

I use this book along with David Swenson's great Practice manual on Ashtanga Yoga and between the exercises of these 2 books and occasional runs in the park I will stay busy for the rest of my life. The great thing is that I don't need to spend a dime on gym memberships, equipment, etc.
00608207725332007-11-28Excellent overall workoutI continue to be incredibly surprised by the effect this workout has on me. I've always been physically active but constantly suffered from tightness along my lower back and legs, despite conventional stretching. After routinely performing the exercises in this book, I found myself feeling unusually well. My back quit feeling so sore and my calves, shin and hamstring stopped feeling as tight after my usual non-Pilate workouts.

Interestingly enough, my family loaned me several Pilate workout videos when they discovered my enthusiasm. I've tried a few of them but have not had as pleasant an experience. The videos aren't targeted for men, perhaps this lends a clue. I suspect, however, that the book just includes some great lower back and leg stretches that the videos do not. 00608207725772007-10-13The Single Best Book on the MarketI am a certified Pilates instructor and I consider this book to be THE authoratative text on Pilates mat work. It is not only an incredible resource for teachers seeking to "tighten up" their already advanced form, but also a fantastic, user-friendly entry point for a beginner looking to build a Pilates practice from the ground up. Exercise descriptions are both clear and concise, and the unique illustrations of the exercises "in motion" go far beyond run-of-the-mill photographs. Lyon's instruction on classical mat work is worth the price of admission alone, but his "Reformer on the mat" section puts this book over the top. "The Complete Book of Pilates for Men" is just that: complete. Man or woman. Beginner or advanced. When I was learning the nuts and bolts of Pilates, I wore out my copy of Lyon's book. It is truly exceptional, and anyone serious about Pilates needs to own it.

A comprehensive, take-anywhere exercise program designed to improve men's strength, flexibility, balance, and posture

Have years of office work wreaked havoc on your posture? Could your tennis or golf game use a boost? Do you appear or feel older than your age? Or do you carry yourself in a manner that expresses strength, power, and peak performance to everyone around you?

In recent years, Pilates has become a popular exercise program, especially among women. Many books on the subject show lithe female bodies stretched across their covers. Top Pilates instructor Daniel Lyon Jr. aims to break the preconception that Pilates only benefits and appeals to women. "This couldn't be further from the truth," he asserts. "Joseph Pilates was a cigar-smoking boxer, acrobat, and gymnast, and he developed his exercise program from that background for men first." Likewise, Lyon designed this book specifically with men in mind, as the number of male Pilates practitioners -- among them professional athletes, actors, businessmen, and other high-profile personalities -- has rocketed to about three million and continues to grow.

For athletes, working stiffs, and men recovering from injuries, Lyon offers the first comprehensive exercise program of its kind. He walks you through forty "traditional mat" exercises and more than sixty "reformer on the mat" exercises -- each one brilliantly illustrated -- in an inspiring self-guided program that adapts to all experience levels and requires nothing more than floor space, an exercise mat, and the desire to look and feel your best. Using the Pilates method of engaging the strongest parts of the body, or the "powerhouse" (Joseph Pilates's term for the abdominals, hips, lower back muscles, and buttocks), and integrating all other body parts from this core, Lyon's program targets trouble spots for men and helps them achieve strong, lean, masculine physiques.

The Complete Book of Pilates for Men will deliver quick and long-term results to any man who seeks optimal fitness and a competitive edge in all aspects of his life.
B000J10KJQPilates for Men076790396XThe Pilates Body: The Ultimate At-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--Without Machines0736056238PilatesB000069YWPClassical Pilates Technique - The Complete Mat Workout Series English & Spanish (Modified Basic / Basic / Intermediate / Advanced / Super Advanced)1578261872Pilates for Men: The Total Solution for Strength, Flexibility and PowerB0007Y6BS4Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition MonitorB0000CEO7JClif Bar Energy Bars, Crunchy Peanut Butter, 2.4-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)4647Health, Mind & Body: Exercise & Fitness: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books4668Health, Mind & Body: Personal Health: Men's Health: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books298657Health, Mind & Body: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books465600New & Used Textbooks468220Business & Finance468226Communication & Journalism468204Computer Science468224Education468212Engineering468206Humanities468222Law468228Medicine & Health Sciences684283011Reference468216Science & Mathematics468214Social Sciences684300011Test Prep & Study Guides251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books319654011Qualifying Textbooks368369011All Titles368370011Arts & Photography368371011Biographies & Memoirs368372011Business & Investing368373011Children's Books368375011Computers & Internet368376011Cooking, Food & Wine368377011Engineering368378011Entertainment368379011Gay & Lesbian368380011Home & Garden368381011Literature & Fiction368382011Medicine368384011Nonfiction368385011Outdoors & Nature368386011Parenting & Families368387011Professional368388011Reference368389011Religion & Spirituality368391011Science368393011Teens368394011Travel251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books4667Men's Health4669Hair Loss4670Impotence68181Infertility282800Personal Health10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books282934Pilates4645Exercise & Fitness10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books282940Injuries & Rehabilitation4645Exercise & Fitness10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11262Men11258Gender Studies11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksROG9FCOWJJU6AThe Top 20 Most Popular Pilates BooksR18YCDF4X8O1SKUnderstanding PilatesR1J4LQHFUI9SHHAntiaging For MenRI1A65EXSHDFFaStore ListmaniaR2X5E75CW5V1VWMost popular Pilates books.2X8MERVFUCZABMy Fitness Bookshelf0767919823http://www.amazon.com/Your-Ultimate-Pilates-Body%C2%AE-Challenge/dp/0767919823%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D076791982326456http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SM6MQXH5L._SL75_.jpg7561http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SM6MQXH5L._SL160_.jpg160131http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SM6MQXH5L._SL500_.jpg500408Brooke SilerPaperback613.719780767919821500767919823EnglishEnglishEnglish9101795USD$17.95Broadway1240Book2005-12-27Broadway2005-12-27BroadwayYour Ultimate Pilates Body® Challenge: At the Gym, on the Mat, and on the Move125720949USD$9.49798USD$7.9817100011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewFUiEPf6jp%2F2xlNtxxjYtnZpEU8fQgVYQXatDaNrke1Gsz64FFD3GfsmRhHE400YrDl24z3Y5nXYNWeBg38Z3HA%3D%3D1221USD$12.21Usually ships in 24 hours5.019407679198235002008-04-05another great book from SilerThis book is a great compliment to Brooke Siler's "The Pilates Body." Then I rotate back to the 1st day of flags at the top of pages. Otherwise it would have seemed too grueling and arduous a workout. I can't be stuck on my living room floor for 8 hours a day. I gotta get this done in 45-minutes then get to work. Maybe you know what I mean. Pilates, like dance, could go on forever.

This book provides the basis for a good workout, week after week, without getting bored. Anything that keeps you moving, no matter what level you use it at, is GOOD. You can use this at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level, and her pages indicate this too.07679198235002007-10-11Pilates Body ChallengeThis book was recommended to me by my physical therapist after I went to her for a back injury. It's really helpful because it shows the correct way to do so many things - gym stuff, daily life things, etc. I highly recommend this for anyone suffering from back pain, it's a great tool.07679198234332007-01-10Great practical application of Pilates to everyday lifeSome great tips to get you using Pilates principles in everyday activities, and to sneak in a mini workout while queuing at the bank! Very practical.

A little repitition if you already have Brooke's earlier book "The Pilates Body", but well worth it.07679198235562007-01-03Great Routines- Perfect for Home Pilates PractitionersI don't recommend this (or any other pilates book, for that matter) to anyone just starting out in Pilates- you need to spend time with a teacher to get the technique down. But, for someone looking to suppliment their studio workouts with a home practice, this book offers a variety of routines that target different areas of the body, along with suggestions for incorporating cardio.
In this remarkable new program, Pilates instructor Brooke Siler once again revolutionizes the world of Pilates, reinventing how and where Pilates is performed, to take your fitness to a whole new level. Elegantly designed and beautifully illustrated, Your Ultimate Pilates Body Challenge takes a fresh approach to Pilates, challenging readers to rethink the way they move and to incorporate Pilates-conscious movements into every aspect of life:

At the Gym: Siler takes you through a fun, rapid-fire circuit of machines that gets and keeps you in your cardio target zone. For the first time ever, you will learn how to use powerful Pilates techniques to maximize your workouts on standard gym equipment (StairMaster, treadmill, stationary bike, etc.).

At Home: Siler steps up the at-home basics by applying Pilates’ principles to work with weights, bands, and non-accoutrement-based exercises.

On the Mat: As so many readers and clients have requested, Siler has created four brand-new mat routines specifically to target abs, lower body, posture, and flexibility, and designed to take experienced practitioners and beginners alike to new levels of body-sculpted accomplishment.

Sports: Siler offers insight into secrets of the world’s best athletes, explaining how to move with Pilates form in individual and team sports. With core strength created in Pilates you can hit better golf shots, ski with less fatigue than ever before, and bring more power to your tennis game.

Everyday Life: Using her trademark “Invisible Workout,” Siler shows you how incorporating Pilates-based awareness and movements into everyday activities—such as restocking the pantry, working at the computer, climbing stairs, or picking up the baby—can tone and strengthen your body.

You will be amazed at how much better you feel when your carriage, breathing, posture, and movements are done Pilates-style. This dynamic book shows how Pilates can actually be the basis for total-body transformation—by simply challenging you to get the absolute most out of everything you already do.
076790396XThe Pilates Body: The Ultimate At-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--Without MachinesB0009SO8ECThe Pilates Body Kit: An Interactive Fitness Program to Strengthen, Streamline, and Tone (includes 2 audio cds, flash cards & workbook)1569754144Ellie Herman's Pilates Props Workbook: Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide0736056238Pilates0892810955Pilates on the Ball: A Comprehensive Book and DVD Workout4647Health, Mind & Body: Exercise & Fitness: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books298657Health, Mind & Body: General404929011General404928011Archive251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books282934Pilates4645Exercise & Fitness10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR1TC5EMJ1OXW4KPilates Rav's and Fav'sROG9FCOWJJU6AThe Top 20 Most Popular Pilates BooksRTN5G2V80I8Y5Pilates for ApprenticesRI1A65EXSHDFFaStore ListmaniaR2X5E75CW5V1VWMost popular Pilates books.RRAR9VAXUHAJ8Exercise to Your Heart's Content2X8MERVFUCZABMy Fitness Bookshelf0806992603http://www.amazon.com/Pilates-Wimps-Fitness-Partially-Motivated/dp/0806992603%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0806992603607844http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4101H0KRHEL._SL75_.jpg7558http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4101H0KRHEL._SL160_.jpg160125http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4101H0KRHEL._SL500_.jpg475370Jennifer DeLucaPaperbackPeter Murdock613.719780806992600410806992603EnglishEnglishEnglish11031795USD$17.95Sterling1128Book2003-10-28SterlingSterlingPilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated (For WimpsT Series)131861748USD$7.48181USD$1.81141400005.017408069926035662005-05-23From a real reviewer!!!I borrowed this book from my local library. The only objection that I have is the choice of model demonstrating poses for the book. One in particular is an older woman with a long, gray, messy ponytail and awful looking feet. Not exactly an inspiration. It isn't necessary to put a covergirl on the pages of the book, but her disheveled images are a distraction from the intended purpose. 00600102665552002-12-10second to nonethis book is extremely well written and easy to follow for anyone who has the desire to learn pilates and/or yoga. while it is usually more effective to meet with an instructor, if the instructor isn't Jonathan, buy this book. having taken a workshop with the author, it would be difficult for me to be instructed by anyone else, therefore having this book to refer to is completely necessary. I encourage anyone who has the desire to do something that will give incredible results, to get this book and follow it several times a week. you will not be disappointed!
Every day more and more people who are burned out from their exercise programs turn to yoga and Pilates. I'd ignored it for a few years but recently acquired it. It goes through just about every Pilates mat exercise that I have ever come across (most other manuals omit at least a few of them) and explains the purpose of the exercise (something many manuals neglect to do). They also include an extensive listing of the Wall Series, the Standing Series and a variety of Reformer on the Mat exercises as well as some other hard-to-categorize exercises that usually show up at the end of some practices, like Bent Knee Lifts and Jumps (which, by the way, look very much like the later developed Lotte Berk Method warmups).

This is an excellent reference for the general Pilates practitioner, but athletes will also be able to utilize this. For each sport, they list common injuries and targeted muscles, then prescribe usually two workouts and the schedule that should be followed on the off-season and training season. Obviously, nothing replaces a one-on-one discussion with a knowledgable Pilates instructor, but this should be useful for those who don't have access to one. Sports included are Swimming, Running, Skiing, Tennis and a few others I don't recall off the top of my head.

This was a great concept that was very well-executed. Given the level of knowledge and expertise, I'd love to see these authors come out with a similar book addressing common injuries and/or postural problems.

Excellent resource for athletes, Pilates students and Pilates instructors.15833318405002007-04-10PILATES FOR THE SPORTS ENTHUSIASTI enjoy exercising and doing many sports such as tennis and golf. This book shows what Pilates exercises to do if you are interested in different sports. I love this book and am so happy I bought it. 15833318405442006-08-16Excellent guide for athletesI was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.

I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.

I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.

An excellent book. I highly recommend it.15833318405682004-05-07Excellent Starter BookThis book is great for anyone who is interested in Pilates. If you do other sports, like biking, running or golf, it gives you appropriate excercises to compliment your activities. It provides outstanding descriptions and pictures of the exercises.
Highly recommend this book...even if you just want a Pilates book with pictures.....15833318405572004-03-24A great read for fitness enthusiasts! As a cyclist and runner, I never before thought that I could benefit from Pilates. This book definitely changed that, and I recommend it to both serious athletes and anyone looking to improve their endurance and well-being. For a start, the presentation is really good - from the smooth cover to the well-designed page layouts and clear photographs demonstrating the exercises. The pages that 'fold out' to show each of the four workouts are also very helpful. Perhaps most importantly, the exercises are all explained in detail and each stage is described in a simple yet effective way. Overall, it just feels like a lot of effort went into every aspect of the book to make it user friendly.

The DVD is the perfect complement to the book. I didn't realise that you could move from one exercise to another so quickly and without the DVD I would have been going at a much slower speed. I was also amazed by the variety of exercises crammed into each of the 4 workouts! The time goes by really quickly because you are never just standing about waiting for the next exercise to start, you are always either doing an exercise or transitioning into the next. I really have to praise the author, Alycea Ungaro, for the wonderful way that she voices over the DVD. Her instructions are simple and her tone of voice is very pleasant and calm. She makes the whole thing a real pleasure to do and makes me feel very motivated.

As a complete Pilates beginnner, I found the workouts quite tough. I was able to follow the moves most of the time, but sometimes I couldn't do all the repetitions or get myself into exactly the right position. But nevermind, this will obviously come with practice! By the end of each of the 15 mins I often have sweat breaking out on my forehead and my muscles feel like they have had a good workout. I like the way you can do just one 15 minute section or combine them. I like to do the 'Day by Day' section followed by one of the other 3 sections (I alternate them each time) for a good 30 minute routine.

Overall, I highly recommend this product. It has a very slick and professional feel and is very efficient in terms of fitting a lot of exercise into a short period of time.07566335755112008-03-27What I was Looking ForI looked for a basic and easy Pilates exercise system which I could do in a short amount of time and practically anywhere. This book was simple to follow and the exercises are fun. It definately fit the bill. I did not order this item for the Cd so cannot review that part of the product, but-I think the cd would just be an added bonus to the already excellent book. If you have never done pilates I am sure the Cd would be helpful to learn the moves. Great price for an excellent item.0756633575514142008-02-23More user-friendly Pilates from Alycea UngaroAlycea Ungaro has once again set a new standard for accessible yet authentic Pilates instruction for the home exerciser. As in her last release, The Pilates Promise, she uses smaller workouts to help introduce Pilates to the new (or time-crunched) exerciser). Here, however, she extends the at-a-glance guides into what she calls a "gatefold"- two consecutive pages that open out into a four page spread with the workout. While I had no complaints about the guides she used in her previous books, this is much easier to see and use.

The workouts themselves have a slightly different twist from her previous works: definitely in the Classical Pilates tradition, but with some preparatory additions (though I can be as much of a purist snob as anyone else, I think I've even heard of Romana doing this). However, while the sequencing is traditional, it is definitely slanted toward the beginner or low intermediate exerciser- many movements, such as the Teaser, are modified down, but few are modified up.

From the more advanced exerciser's point of view, Ungaro compensates for that somewhat by including some very rarely seen exercises, either from the Mat, Standing or Reformer-on-Mat sequences. The majority of those show up in the weights series (e.g., the Lunges) or the "functional fitness" workout, (e.g., the Splits). At the very least, they're a great way to incorporate variety into your Pilates routine.

While Ungaro previously used a Magic Circle in her other books and even an optional Pilates bar, here the only pieces of equipment required are a well-cushioned mat and hand weights; in other words, even more accessible for the average home exerciser.

The workouts themselves are: Day by Day, which is a modified version of the classical syllabus most Pilates practioners are familiar with (the Hundred through the Stomach Series, plus some other classics, although, again, movements like the Hundred and the Roll Up are modified); From the Top Down, which uses handweights and has a more immediate upper body emphasis, but also works the lower body if done properly; From the Bottom Up, which includes much of the well-known Side Kicks series as well as the modified Teaser and a few weightless upperbody movements); and Up, Up and Away, the functional fitness workout which includes a differently modified Hundred, some Rowing exercises, some spinal twists, some modified Reformer movements and the rarely seen Footwork and Splits series).

Because I have been doing Pilates for years, I would probably turn to the last workout the most because of the different movements. However, Ungaro also provides sample schedules for people who would like to incorporate all of the workouts into their weeks, with different time constraints- another very useful guide.

As for the DVD, each workout takes the promised fifteen minutes, although experienced practitioners could probably perform them more quickly. Ungaro has a pleasant onscreen delivery in voice over- patient, warm, but to the chase. I think many people who want to get started with Pilates and need an AV guide would find her suitable.

This a great addition to the library of beginning and intermediate Pilates home-practitioners, but advanced students may want to look at Ungaro's older books.07566335755222008-02-14Best Pilates Video I have seen I love so many things about this book and dvd. It is very focussed on form. I like how you can read the book and get thorough instructions. The pull out charts are fabulous for when you don't have a place to view the dvd. It is amazing how she walks your through proper form and the link to the page in the book is listed when doing an exercise so that you can look it up if you need to.
It is great that it is broken up into 15 minute segment. I usually only have time to 15 segments. I also like to be able to rotate what part of the body I am going to be working on.
You definately notice the workout the next day and you want to go back and do more.
I have enjoyed this so much taht I want to get the other books/dvd's in the series.07566335755882008-02-12Everything you would expect and more.I have been a big fan of Alycea Ungaro, for years I have purchased her books and the Classical Pilates DVD's that she collaborates on. This book/DVD combo is great. Thank you for finally giving us a book that can really open out and show everything step by step.

This is interactive Pilates, between the book and the DVD it is near impossible to not know your exact form and the page references are nice. Even though I have practiced Pilates for years I still found myself pausing and checking the book to make sure I knew what I was suppose to be doing. (Especially with the arm series which had many new exercises for me.)

The first workout is really a Pilates prep or reset. Where you get back to the basics and even into pre-basics.

The second workout is more about upper body w/ light weights.

The third workout focuses on the leg series and lower body.

The forth workout is more of a full body workout that is more intense than the first workout.

Since these are all 15 minute workouts, its easy to fit them into your day. I have been doing 15 mins in the morning after my cardio with a PM session to get the full 30 mins into my daily work week. Then on Saturdays I'll do 30-60 mins depending on how much time I have.

I liked this Book/DVD combo so much I have come back to purchase a copy for my mother. No time to exercise? It is nice because you can mix and match what you want, using your body weight and nothing more. They do use one piece of equipment- a pilates ring. You will want a standard yoga or pilates mat for the exercises and you are good to go.

The pictures show you what you should be doing and everything is easy to follow. I really like how this book is set up. Do what exercises you feel like doing that day, and some cardio-- and you have a great weight loss/ toning program that you can do at home. 15692447315782004-05-14Newly Flexible RunnerI come from a runner background and have been looking for a workout to improve my flexibility. I saw Hot Bod Fusion and bought it since it includes pretty much every discipline known for flexibility. What's great about this book is that each chapter only takes me about 10 minutes--cool. Exercises also include `tips' from the author that help keep me on track and focused. I've done the routine 8 times now. Do I feel more flexible? Yes, definitely-and my `core' is stronger to boot!15692447315772004-05-14Quick and Effective!I'm so happy I can do this workout in only 30 minutes and still hit all my problem areas. I really feel it in my abs the next day! And the ballet is definitely giving my rear a nice lift. I've been doing pilates for over 4 years and it's nice that this book includes advanced options and 2 chapters that use the pilates circle. It makes things challenging and interesting for me. I'm newer to yoga and ballet but finding these routines easy to follow because of all the pictures. Many of the exercises show modifications, as well, which has helped me ease into them. It really is the quickest and most effective workout I've tried!15692447315582004-05-10Hot Bod FusionI noticed a flatter stomach after two weeks of the exercises. Everything is detailed and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this book. Also, the male model is very easy on the eyes. Ha!156924473154102004-05-08The Best Fitness BookThis looks like a great book. I just got it, and I can't wait to get started on the four-week sequence of exercises.
