I absolutely love this journal. It helped me to lose over 30 pounds because I was able to keep track of intake of fruits, veggies, water and weekly weight which allowed me to set new goals for myself each day. Being able to journal my feelings daily also helped tremendously. Even if you don't use the Making the Connections plan this is a great way to keep track of your progress. - Lina Yerke, MI

This is by far the best work-out journal I have ever used.I love the ease of just checking off how many fruits and veggies you have had for the day or glasses of water you have consumed. You do not have to wtrite everything out. It really is layed out well.At the end of the week it gives you a spot to reflect back on the week.Plenty of room for to write out all your thoughts.

I have been using this journal for 9 years and it is awesome! It contains ample room for your daily entries, water and food intake.

The only bummer is that it is out of print and very hard to find. However, Amazon.com has it available through Marketplace vendors. I have ordered several copies thru this service and have been very pleased with the journals.

I have tried serveral journals and this is by far the best. I highly recommend it!!!

If you are a person that likes to do the journaling thing, this book is for you. Each day is set up with two pages, one that you can write your thoughts. This particular page is great as it gives you an inspirational quote every day. The other page is the one where you get to note how much water you drank, the fruits and veggies you ate. You also get to enter in some info about exercise that you did and more. Some of us can do things better if we put them down on paper. If this is your style, this is a great book for you.

When I first bought the journal in 1996, when the program first came out, I put it on a shelf and let it collect dust for six months than I started Oprah's program. What made me stay on the excerise/eating right program was this journal I had to put everything I ate, felt, did down on paper. Sometimes that is the hardest part. The important thing I found out is that when you put your feelings down on paper, you can detect a pattern to why you are not succeding in losing weight. Because of Oprah's journal, I was able to see what I was doing wrong and correct it. I now years later review my first journal to keep giving me inspiration to continue on the right track. This journal simplify's the process outlined in Oprah's book by making it easy to check off how much water you drank and check off the fruits you ate, it enables you to see how much more you have to consume for the day to stay on the plan, there is also lots of room to discuss how much excerise you did, and how you felt about it. This journal helped me stay on Oprah's plan to lose weight, it is well worth the purchase.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Kevyn Aucoin a beautiful life: The Success, Struggles, and Beauty Secrets of a Legendary Makeup Artist".

His friends and family gave a thorough view inside the life and times of the VERY talented Kevyn Aucoin. It was a story that ended all too soon for this reader.

A sweet tribute

I was so sad when Kevyn Aucoin died, because his looks were amazing. He really was an artist, and just did such creative things with makeup. This book is a bit of a biography, and a tribute to his work. You get a bit of a timeline through the chapters of his years in Louisiana, then heading to New York and getting more and more prestigious gigs. And you get sweet tributes from the many whose lives he touched, especially a lot of famous women - Tina Turner, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc - who he worked with. There are some tips included, but the best ones are in his other books, Making Faces, and Face Forward. But this is still good, because you get to see a lot more of his work, and I didn't realize that he took so many photos: He was really an amazing photographer, and his drawings (a lot of Barbra Streisand and others) show he was a great artist with pen, paper, pencil, glue, ink, you-name-it.

Anyone seriously interested in the art of makeup must be familiar with the name Kevyn Aucoin. In the era of the supermodel, he was the super makeup artist. Aucoin was not only an exceptional artist, but an exceptional person. I could rave on and on about my late teens and early twenties, when I went through a period of self hatred because of the way I percieved myself. Kevyn's books encouraged readers to be adventurous in their exploration of self-image, teaching good techniques and smart tricks. It may sound trite, but I honestly believe those books did a lot for my self-esteem as well as my makeup skills. Even if you don't own his other books, this one is worth having for sure.

I thought this book would be more of a "how to" book more than a biography, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am more inspired than ever to take my makeup artistry to the next level. It is easy to read and very interesting. No matter who you are or what your goals are, this book is proof that EVERYONE has obstacles to overcome. There is a small portion of the book dedicated to "how-to" in the back and I read the book cover to cover. I think I will still get some other beauty how-to books, but I was not disappointed in this at all even though it did not turn out to be what I originally thought.

Killer Germs is comprehensive study of human pathogens that weaves in enough history and human interest stories to make it fascinating reading. I use it as my textbook in my Infectious Diseases course at the University of Missouri and the students actually read it. One student said in my course evaluations, "Thanks for picking a textbook that is enjoyable to read! I read it twice this semester and bought a copy for my Dad for his birthday."

Believe it or not, I found this book in a basket of "things to do," at a home of a friend, while using the lavatory. Needless to say, the title caught my attention, as my mind swiftly took stock of all the potential creepies and crawlies lurking in the very bathroom I had exposed myself to. Picking it up with a nervous chuckle, I soon found myself hooked and fascinated by the medical information which was being presented. It's not difficult reading material, nor is it boring. If you like criminal shows, forensic sciences and the like - you should really enjoy this.

I used this book for one of my classes and I was dreading having to read a book about biology and diseases. After reading the first chapter I got hooked, and couldn't set the book down. I read it in three days while I was out hiking in the woods and it made me a little paranoid about ticks that might be in the grass and other insects! The book definitely makes you think about every living organism that is around you, on you, and inside you.

This is by no means a detailed book about any particular disease, bacteria, or virus. However, it is the perfect book for somebody who has never taken an interest in diseases or epidemics. It is very easy to read and entertaining.

I'm a male and for some time I have been considering having liposuction. I know there are plenty of sucessful results, and I have heard the stories of disasters as well. I have been overly cautious in making the decision to move forward. I have some fat pockets that I do not want to live with if I dont have to. I learned more from The Little Book of Lipo than I had gleaned from reading hundreds of websites, surgeons brochures, or visting with docs in their office for consultation. This book tells it all, including plenty of information I had not even thought to consider. I still have made no decision, but I am now informed. The book is a great little read for anyone considering the lipo procedure.

Not helpful book on liposuction

Review Date: 2008-07-28
I bought the book, hoping to get copies of it for my patients who are about to undergo laser assisted liposuction. Not only is there very little on laser assisted liposuction it basically stays with the subject of traditional liposuction with a tiny blurb on laser applications.

My practice is an internal medicine/laser practice and the author states in several chapters how careful a patient must be on choosing their doctor and that the doctor must be a plastic surgeon. There are many specialties of doctors offering the procedure and to omit all general physicians from performing it would be to omit many outstanding physicians. The book is too repetitious in this subject instead of just stating her opinion once on physician selection.

I gave it to my practice partner to read and stated that we would be unable to offer it to our patients or they would go running from us. It is my firm belief that liposuction has advanced to laser assisted lipo and that qualified laser physicians can offer a beautiful procedure, which is half art, half science. That is, sculpting the areas of treatment requires a keen eye for symmetry and outcome.

Patricia does a great job discussing all the valuable information about green tea. First discussing the method of green tea and weight loss.
She has introduced a safe weight loss method that works and most importantly it's safe. Drinking green tea helps you burn fat and increase metabolism. Green tea has antioxidants which help prevent heart disease, certain cancers, and many other illnesses.

Great book for both tea lovers and those seeking a healthy weight loss method.

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (8/06)

Drinking green tea has been a favorite of mine for quite some time so when the opportunity came up to review "Loose Weight with Green Tea" I took the task. I had previously heard that green tea had many benefits and that people in China have been drinking it for about 4000 years. Surely, anything that has been consumed for that many years and still considered medicine by them is worth researching more.

Rouner's book certainly is full of condensed research. She has spent much time and effort compacting information into a small, readable book. The beginning of the book gives scientific research results as well as growing and processing. It was interesting to note that there are over 3000 varieties of tea grown. It's not much wonder that many of the teas taste so different from each other. The remainder of the book covers making of the tea to drink, the benefits, the nutritional values, as well as addressing the caffeine concerns and a little trivia dispersed throughout the book.

I learned from Rouner's research that the "most critical factors in brewing tea are the water, temperature of the water and the tea." Regarding water she claims that if the water (from the tap) doesn't taste good, it will reflect on the taste of the tea. Rouner talks about spring water as well as reverse osmosis, the most effective treatment, being used for tea water. She claims that minerals in the water are essential for good tasting tea therefore discourages the use of distilled water. "For green tea the water temperature should be between 160-175 degrees Fahrenheit" which means the water must not be boiling (212 degrees.)

It was interesting for me to learn that when tea was first introduced to England it was cost prohibitive, however, milk on the other hand was not. How much milk was added to the tea indicated social standing. The poorer people used a lot of milk in their tea whereas the more affluent the people were, the less milk was used.

Rouner's main point of "Loose Weight with Green Tea" is just that - encouragement to add green tea daily to the diet, not only to loose weight but to maintain it. Her research shows that metabolism can be increased by consumption of green tea in turn causing burning of access fat as well as provide the body with essential antioxidants.

I encourage those that are interested in a healthy body to consider reading Rouner's "Loose Weight with Green Tea," add drinking green tea to their daily routine, and benefit the abundant results. Here's to health!

You know the kind of person who when you ask: What are you drinking? they answer--TEA. Ask another person, like author Patricia Rouner, and you will know more about green tea that you thought possible.

Some of the topics covered are:

-- The science
-- Growing and processing tea
-- How to brew (and this IS important)
-- Polyphenols (huh?)
-- Coffee / caffeine comparison
-- Extracts
-- Fighting diseases

The subtitle about weight loss might pull a lot of readers in, but the chapter on fighting disease was very important.

"If only half the studies are proven accurate, green tea's health benefits are stunning," the author states on page 85. She had Googled "kidney disease and green tea" and 477,000 articles of interest were listed. A sample of the health issues discussed in the book are: immune system, allergies, Alzheimer's, blood pressure, bone density, carbs, artery disease, etc., etc.

Did you know...?

-- A report stated that oral cells damaged by smokers can be decreased by drinking green tea.

-- The most popular tea brands have different antioxidant levels.

-- Adding sugar and milk do not affect the flavonoid in the tea, but increase the calorie count.

-- Ice tea "happened" in 1904 at the St. Louis Exposition. It was HOT! and no one wanted the vendor's hot tea. He added ice, and happy lines formed. Ice tea makes up almost 85% of tea consumed in the U.S.

The FAQ (one at the end of each section) about caffeine was interesting. A pound of tea has more calories than a pound of coffee--but tea makes 300 cups while coffee yields 80 cups. Draw your own conclusions on that.

All that said, what is it about green tea that helps you lose weight? Well, it speeds up metabolism and helps the body bun fat, about 80 calories a day. It can reduce hunger, which means lower calorie intake. It can help older people lose weight and younger people prevent middle-age spread. With almost two-thirds of Americans overweight--that's a good deal. And you'll learn so much more in the "Science" chapter.

Losing weight is part of being more healthy--and green tea combines the two benefits.

Armchair Interviews says: If you want to know about green tea...but were afraid to ask, this book has all the answers. So when someone asks, "What are you drinking?" they better be prepared for a lot of information.

The ultimate guide to green tea

This small books packs a mighty punch! Patricia Rouner has assembled enough research and clear-thinking into a guide that will not only answer all of your questions about green tea and its benefits, but what may be important, and how you can use the information to become healthier and to lose weight if you so desire. Witty and well-written, the book is a quick read, full of facts, supporting facts, and more support for conclusions than you may expect or be used to. I recommend it as an advanced primer for green tea and as a thoughtful guide to contemplation of how to best present an overview and an in-depth study of one subject all at the same time.

There has been a ton of research conducted in regards to the benefits of Green Tea. Patricia Rouner has compiled and summarized this information into a great book called Lose Weight with Green Tea. While I feel the title and back cover text is very "hypey" the information presented is clear, concise, and very informative.

One of the best pieces of information covered in the book was explaining the components of green tea that actually provides the real benefit - polyphenols and antioxidants.

Other information included was:
-The different types of tea
-The best way to prepare tea
-Which commercially available green teas have the highest antioxidants
-The benefits/harms of caffeine
-Green Tea supplements and what to look for
-How much green tea should you drink?
-How green tea combats certain diseases

The bottom line is, a person loses weight with a proper diet and exercise but green tea can slightly increase your metabolism and provide additional health benefits so drinking it is a good idea, but as can be expected, you can't eat Cheeseburgers 3 times a day and lose weight just by drinking Green Tea.

I wish I had thought of this concept. It's brilliant to share weight loss strategies through the tale of one woman who real woman can relate to.

Readers (male or female) will be inspired by this womans journey. She is not perfect, she has fears, she has obstacles, she has set backs and she also has hope, determination and ultimately success. You are routing for her every step of the way as you are relating to her challenges and victories.

When my clients read the the 8 simple strategies they have "ah ha" moments where things begin to click and they believe in thier ability to follow the suggestions and make postive changes.

I read the entire book on a round trip plane trip from Newark to Utah. I could not put it down. I recommend this book for all of my clients who are struggling with living a healthful lifestyle. I am currently working with 4 clients who have over 100 pounds to lose and have recommended it to each of them. Several have read it more than once.

Read this book if you want an enlighten tale with real life strategies that work.

A diet book unlike virtually any other

Lose Weight with the Power of One: A Motivational Journey To Nutritional Sanity is a diet book unlike virtually any other. It opens on a simple premise... all diets fail. Some diets are based on myths (such as the "food combining diet") or even bad nutrition, and are certain to be harmful. Some diets are nutritionally sound on paper, but they effectively tell the dieter what to eat and when, according to someone else's rules - and human nature, complete with its changeable tastes, cravings, and moods, will sooner or later resist the morass of tangled rules and regulations. Instead of providing the reader with a meticulous eating plan, Lose Weight with the Power of One offers eight basic strategies for healthier eating, such as "reduce one's daily fat intake as low as possible", "eat breakfast", "do not bring factory made snacks, meals, or refined products into the home - use foods that are as close to natural as possible", and "stop eating when you are approaching feeling full". These simple tenets can promote a nutritional lifestyle revolution. Each principle, and the reasons behind it, is explained in-depth in a dialogue format that almost resembles reading a novel. In a world horribly over saturated with fad diets that ignore the basic needs and nature of the body, Lose Weight with the Power of One is an absolute "must-read" for anyone striving to make permanent, positive changes in their eating and health habits.

I own this well informed book that gives you a motivational read to lead a healthier life. It provides some proven strategies to live by. As a cookbook author myself, I've found this book compares similar to my writing of recipes that are low in fat and high in fiber, finding some tasty and delicious recipes in this book that will add variety to anyone's diet. Recipes that are lowfat with added fiber and a section to help you cook with whole grains and where to buy them. There's even a section of muscle toning exercises to help one become a fat burner at all times. Having had health problems in the past this book has been an inspiration to pursue better health in my own life. With a bad back, I find the lower back muscle toning and stretches soothing to my aching back.

Finally, a diet book that makes sense! Low Fat Living has all the usual advice and bean recipes, but with a difference. It's about developing a skill set designed for long term success -- even we're ony adding one skill at a time. From sleeping patterns and mindset to the oils on our pantry shelves this is a book that acknowledges that readers have lives beyond what they eat. Indeed, this is a healthy food book about LIVING -- not another FAT-IS-THE-ENEMY militant diet plan that made me despair "How am I ever going to follow this?" Plus the recipes are delicious.

My only complaint with this book is its title, "Low Fat Living." It goes far beyond that. This is really the "whole mind, whole body" approach to weight control and more. This book seems to be a collection of everything that the authors could find that contributes to weight loss, organized in an interesting and integrative manner. I particularly loved the study that showed that people watching television burn up fewer calories than people sitting and watching a blank screen. As a woman at age 53, I was wondering if I could ever again shed pounds. My old approaches didn't work. The one thing that I knew was that people who successfuly do lose weight and keep it off do so through making life-style changes and they tailor what they do to their own bodies. This book enabled me to have a comprehensive understanding of what those changes needed to be concerning (1) nutrition, (2) exercise (including simply increasing motion), (3) water, (4) sleep, and (5) stress management. To my surprise, stress management has actually been the most challenging-and perhaps the most rewarding. I am no longer in the "diet" mentallity. I am now concentrating on making the small changes--trying this and that until I find ways that appeal to me and that I can sustain--and these are adding up to large changes that affect not just my weight, but my general health. Through this process and over several months, I am finding that my body and mind are changing in what they want. It is like my whole system is resetting to different standards. I'm beginning to actually be drawn to vegetables and whole grains, walking the dog, and skipping TV. Who'd'a thunk?

This is a good dieting book but the two apple recipes I tried, were gag-awful.

In my busy day and quest for a health-conscious diet, innovation and creativity are sometimes hard to muster. Jennifer's book does a wonderful job of not only giving great ideas for great tasting snacks, meals, and more, but takes traditional recipes and gives them a "raw" makeover. If you find yourself trapped in the same processed-food world but don't know how to make the transition to a raw-foods/vegetarian diet, Jennifer's book is a great start!!

You can tell this recipe book was truly made with love when you open it and read the Introduction and the Blessing before the Meal. Jennifer Lynn has obviously thought this out. Unique, fresh and easy to follow recipes.

A Beautiful Love Story

This really is the story of a journey, told in a way that makes it a gripping story, much like a novel. Harrison Hoblitzelle, known as Hob, is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease as we begin. His wife tells the tale, but shares a great deal in his words of what he was experiencing. Both are teachers and practitioners of Buddhist philosophy and meditation, as well as fans of great literature. The book is laced with famous quotations, guided meditations and visits to spiritual leaders for help dealing with what is happening. Hob hangs on as well as he can, but the disease erodes his memory and his ability to speak. Often he considers suicide to avoid the late stages. Olivia shares her own struggles to live in the moment and to give Hob all the help he needs without losing herself. Hob does die in the end. The reader knows that from the beginning. The question is how it will happen. This is a beautiful book, very comforting to those living with the disease, and loaded with helpful exercises and resources.

Better late than never! I would have been so very, very grateful if I had read this book before I lost my best friend, my son, and my husband, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease for 35 years. Olivia, a childhood friend of mine, artfully and sensitively carries her readers through the difficult journey of illness and death from the perspective of the patient as well as the caregiver. She gives her readers the courage and insight to go where most of us fear to tread. I have shared this book with others, all of whom are as grateful as I am. Thank you, Olivia.

As someone who is currently traversing the dark and difficult territory of a loved one's struggle with Alzheimer's, I can't say enough about this brave, honest, and illuminating book. Without ever being sentimental, it offers a very profound form of consolation, encouraging us simultaneously to bring as much clarity as we can to the process of the mind's disintegration/while remembering that what we most truly are is something that transcends the organic gray matter of the brain. After receiving a copy of the book myself, I ordered copies for two friends whose husbands are facing early-onset Alzheimers. And I also made reference to it in an upcoming article ("Awake and Demented") for Tricycle Magazine.
I am profoundly grateful to Olivia H.--not to speak of her late husband Hob--for this beautiful and inspiring book.

A compassionate and inspiring resource for dealing with loss

Alzheimers - a dreaded, overwhelming diagnosis for any one, any family, to have to face. In her beautifully written book, Olivia Hoblitzelle reaches out a hand of support to all those dealing with mental loss. We are given insight into what a person with dementia experiences through the actual words and reflections of Olivia's husband. In the midst of the sadness, fear, and loss, we are reminded of the opportunities for connection, reconnection and humor. Even if meditation is not your chosen path, this book contains helpful and inspiring suggestions for transforming the constant demands of caretaking into a 'practice' of loving kindness and compassion - for your loved one and, equally importantly, for yourself as caregiver. Beyond being a useful resource, this book is a deeply moving love story that is compelling to read.

A push in the right direction

I highly recommend this book if you, like me, are trying to 1. figure out what your dreams are, and 2. how to achieve them. Like any tool, this is one that you have to use to see results. I bought it over a year ago and am now finally working through the process. Marcia's basic message is to figure out what makes you tick and phrase it in simple language. I'm not always keen on the abstract concepts but overall, this is a great book.

A Good Read!

Consider this book motivational, or maybe inspirational, rather than educational. Everything Marcia Wieder says makes sense. Her basic message: Figure out what you want in life and start moving toward it in practical, everyday steps. That's not exactly groundbreaking philosophy, but for readers lacking in direction, the message that you can change your situation through action undoubtedly will do some good. So if you're lacking in purpose or ambition, we [...] recommend this book to you.

Dreamers Who Are Doers!

America's "Dream Coach" suggests that in order to make your dreams reality, you take action in the direction of your dreams. After identifying one's passions, followup should be made in the form of acting on those discoveries. A dreamer must start the journey where they are. Waiting for ideal conditions is futile.
"Start by thinking about your dream as real," she writes.

Visualization is an essential component of the process. "Picture yourself already living your dream," she encourages. In other words, the dream starts in one's mind's eye. Seeing (internally) is believing. Be cautious with whom you share your dream, but to trustworthy friends and fellow dreamers, communicate your vision. "The more you speak and write about your dream, the sooner you'll live it," she advises.

This is a inspiring book on focusing on the things that will enable you to determine your target and hit it. There is much practical advice in this highly recommended book.

Dreamers - A Take-Action Guide to Move You Forward!

This book (and it's companion tape set) is a definate treasure. I was fortunate to hear Marcia at a business conference (isn't that a twist - dreams at a business conference!) and was enthralled.

She is positive, uplifting, and really encourages you to examine closely what makes you happy, what you'd really like to accomplish, and how to get out of your own way. Marcia won't beat you up, but she will give you concrete, take-action steps to move you forward from "it would be nice if..." to "I'm making it happen!".

This book was instrumental in helping me decide to move from my IT career of over 19 years into my own business as an Image Coach. I find much more fulfillment in doing this, and it's this book that made it possible. I recommend this to any and everyone who feels that they are meant for something more than what they are doing right now, or who needs to find more fulfillment in what they are doing.

Everyone who reads this book won't necessarily change their life's direction drastically, but this book will definately get you looking inward and gives you the tools to build a much brighter and more welcome future.

Highly recommended, along with the companion web site and if you can get a copy of her tape set, do so...the audio tapes make a great add-on for the book.

Maybe the best practical book on making dreams come true!

The whole idea of making dreams come true is a tough nut to crack. While the whole notion may conjure up a lot of doubt, this unique book does a pretty good job of solving the problem. I've had the fortune of hearing Marcia Weider speak in person and by the way, she is a dynamic speaker, I think that her book here is a pleasant surprise. Readers will enjoy her use of diagrams, charts, lists and all the things that an experienced seminar leader needs in order to illustrate such an abstract concept. While this book has probably not sold that well, I think it is a very valuable contribution to the field of personal developement. I think that success-oriented women in particular should buy this book.
