Excellent book! The program to reduce pain works within one week, along with taking the new Super Aspirins. Very well written, easy-to-understand, and scientifically balanced--unlike other books on arthritis cures which seem to be HYPE and author opinion rather than fact. The author seems to have done her research! I recommend this book. It has a shopping guide at the end, which helps to see which things you should buy organic, which things don't matter as much, and why. It helps seeing that buying organic can be pricier than regular items.

Great for the organics beginner!

I bought this book because I was trying to learn more about organics. This was very informative. It was written by a mother, so it was very helpful in my search about the benefits of organic eating for my children. It was easy to read and packed with great tips and useful information.

This is an awesome book and answered just what I wanted answered. I was wanting to buy organic not just for my health, but also for the environment. But I know organic doesn't always equal environmentally friendly. And when do I buy local? If local foods aren't organic, should I get imported organic? This book talks about the environmental as well as health interplay in a really easy to read way. Its a quick read and has a very useful shopper's guide in the back. By far the best "organic buying" guide I've seen so far. Love it!

Because I haven't been able to grow a garden of late, I'm forced to shop for most of my groceries. What I wanted to know is what I should buy or not buy. The author answers this perfectly and efficiently with a list in the latter part of the book, stating the produce in question, buy organic or not, and the reasons why.

What surprised me was that she also talks about how FAR food frequently travels and the carbon cost as a result. Is it worth buying organic if it's traveled across the ocean? While I understood this before, her book has made scrutinize this aspect of my food purchases even harder than before.

The book was an easy read but I admit to glossing over some of the talk about why you should eat organic or buy locally. What I wanted was precise information to help make my shopping more effective. I got exactly that.

I read To Walk on Fertile Ground in one evening. That was not my original intention, but I was so drawn into the story, I couldn't put it down!
This book is the opportunity to share a journey with Kristi through the trials of infertility but more importantly, through faith. Kristi's honesty about her feelings during this time gives you hope while allowing you to see the pain and difficulty she's been through. It also shows the rock solid marriage, friendship and partnership she shares with Steve.
Kristi gives the reader encouragement and insight to her own spirituality. More than a great read, it's a ministry, a message.

I have not gone through the journey that my friend Kristi has, but I have been through the "infertile" journey with SEVERAL friends, and this book is an inspirational word for all. I read this book in a night, and I have already passed my copy on to a friend suffering through her third unsuccessful attempt at invitro. Kristi shows that, even through trials, God works all things for His good and for those who are HIS children. What a remarkable message for anyone going through a life trial. Thank you, Kristi, for being faithful to share your heart in order to help others.

I just got my copy of this book today. From what I've looked at so far, it seems to be very clear, thorough and well-illustrated. My only complaint is that this book is oversized and heavy. It's not the kind of thing that will fit in my gym bag so I can refer to it while working out. I think it needs a better format.

This book is heavily weighted toward the use of exercise machines. If you have access to them at home or in a gym, then it's an excellent book for toning and strength building. If you don't, you'll discover that, aside from the sturdy spiral format, it has little to offer the at-home exerciser interested in using handheld, wrist, or ankle weights and the Thera Band system. If the latter is more your speed, try Joan Pagano's excellent book: "Strength Training for Women."

Very Complete

I was surprised at the depth of and introduction to some critical exercises that even the best strength training books do not even attempt to address: things like wrist strength, pronation movements, and so forth. I felt this book really rounded out my exercises and it pictured the muscles I use so that I could build a more complete routine around all of the muscle groups I wanted to target or had been neglecting. Great book, spiral with pix, easy to take to gym.

I will be purchasing more of these books for family that want to understand and help my son. This is an easy to read book and has easy answers for the most common questions about Autism. I recommend this to book to anyone who has had a child just diagnosed and doesn't know where to turn or for people who are in contact with anyone with Autism and want to understand it better.

Thank God for this book and for LDN

Review Date: 2008-08-29
Mary and her husband have ,thankfully, not suffered in vain. LDN which came to my notice through this book has significantly improved my health which had been detiorating for several years. I am so grateful to Dr. Bihari for bringing LDN to people like me who suffer from auto immune disorders. This treatment which is safe and inexpensive has been an answer to my prayers. The symptoms which I had already developed still come and go but much less frequently than before. Most importantly , no new symptoms have developed since I started taking LDN. I am able to more fully enjoy life with my husband and our 5 children without being in pain and exhausted all the time. I only wish that G.Ps in Britain would do their homework and prescribe this drug more readily. I have personally encountered a lot of ignorance and arrogance among some GPs who know little about the treatment and are unwilling to learn. Thankfully in the Republic of Ireland it is more widely known and available. It can be prescribed safely to women who are trying to conceive and at 4.5 mg can be taken safely during pregnancy. If you suffer from any auto immune disorder or suspect that you do, I would urge you to read this book and try LDN. If your GP won't prescribe it , don't give up. I obtained my treatment through a private prescription and it is well worth the £28 per month.Anyone who has been helped by LDN should publicise the treatment as widely as possible. I really feel that we have duty to help others who might benefit.
THANK YOU MARY - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !

Sometimes clear and definite personal experiences "anecdotes" are better proof than cloudy "gold standard" research. Though formal medical research is still in early stages, a neurologist who refuses to use "unproven" LDN for MS amd Crohn's disease is needlessly letting his patients suffer and decline. This book is in agreement with many other "anecdotal" sources that this is a more effective treatment than the expensive (profitable) and painful drug treatments the doctors demand. I (author of HONEST NUTRITON) have a niece and two close friends with MS and several with Crohn's. They should get this safe and effective treatment. Thank you, Mary Bradley, for writing a very clear, readable, and convincing book.

After 10 years of traditional therapy I decided after a lot of research to try LDN. The book was easy and enjoyable to read. Shared with my support group. This treatment has some remarkable success but little support
since trials are rarely done. It would be fantastic to have an inexpensive drug recognized for its positive benefit on chronic debilitating illnesses. We need the $$$$ signs to go out of the drug companies mentality and push to investigate and be positive on helping so many who struggle daily. Maybe more success stories need to be published.

If you have MS or any autoimmune disease...READ THIS BOOK!

I was diagnosed with MS in July 05 at 29. In Jan of 06 I ended up paralyzed from the waist down due to an severe exacerbation. I was not on any of the C.R.A.B. drugs at the time, but was using holistic remedies that I had read about. After getting out of the hospital I went on Copaxone. While it seemed to help, I was not thrilled about taking a shot everyday nor the $3000 a month cost of the medication. I was relentless when it came to looking for other therapies. I stumbled on this book by just searching for literature on MS here on Amazon. The book looked unassuming, but the title was too intriquing to pass up. I bought the book and read the entire thing the day I received it. WOW! I was so excited! I was having difficulty finding a Dr. to prescribe LDN as most seem to follow the standard protocol to avoid lawsuits or because of pressure from drug companies. I emailed Mary and she emailed me back and within a week I found my current doctor and have not looked back. I have been on LDN since mid April and am so thankful! My muscle spasms have decreased so much I don't have to take any other meds for them. My bladder dysfunction still persists, but is so much improved that I only take half the dosage of those pills now. And, it is SOO nice only taking a pill at night before bed than giving yourself injections everyday. Finally, the cost!! I spend $30 a month for my LDN. My costs have been cut 100 fold. If you have MS or any autoimmune disease I would encourage you to read this book. Everyone (NMSS in particular) keeps touting that an oral medication is just around the corner....IT'S ALREADY HERE AND AVAILABLE!!!!

I was recently diagnosed with MS this past June and through an incredibly fortunate turn of events,my In-Laws suggested I read Mary Anne's book...which I did. It is so well written, chock full of imperitive information that I was not receiving through the medical community, provided much insight into this desease, and at times humorous and touched me in an amazing way. Yet, I was even more touched to again have the incredible good fortune to actually meet Mary Anne and her husband Noel in person in July. To say that she and her family have been thoroughly instimental while I'm on this journey is an understatement.'Up the Creek with a Paddle' is an absolute must-read for anyone grappling with a life-altering disease, whether the person directly affected or the caregivers/family/friends. LDN has provided me with such massive help and hope and had it not been for Mary Anne Bradley, I would never have known about LDN's existance. To read this book and learn of LDN will turn your life around, to have met Mary Anne and Noel Bradley restores your faith in true Earth-bound Angels! Thanks for them both and thanks for 'Up the Creek with a Paddle' will never be enough. Mary Anne is a true pioneer and has the fortitude and tenacity that is seemingly lacking in the medical community on a whole. Her book should be a must-read for anyone going through very difficult medical challenges...not exclusive to MS. Thank you so very, very much for everything, Mary Anne!!!

I read this book in public places (on the Metro, in cafes), and some of the passages had me laughing OUT LOUD! People gave me funny looks, but I don't care. Mariah Burton Nelson is so FUNNY and inspirational! Reading this book just makes me feel like I want to be better...and that all of my goals are within reach. I agree with Ms. Burton Nelson that thinking of oneself as an athlete will change your life. I like the confidence being athletic brings, and I'm appreciative that this author brought the concept of being an athlete and personal success together in this book. I'm huge fan of all of Ms. Burton Nelson's work; finding her early books in the library helped ease the pain of some lonely, confusing summers while I was in college. I just like the concepts that she comes up with and the way she writes. All of her sports books are fabulous of course, but I also recommend her book about forgiveness, The Unburdened Heart (an important book for anyone, I believe). Read We Are All Athletes! You'll love it, and it might just change your life for the better.

Way to go, Mariah!

Mariah is the real thing and it shows up in this book. This book is warm, thoughtful, full of good advice, friendly, and funny. You don't even have to be or like jocks to find little gems of how to live a good life in these pages.
As a spoken word performer who cannot have an inspired "A game" every night, I especially enjoyed the chapter "B Is for B-Game", "prepare to win on an off-day." Mariah understands the nuances of excellence--no matter how hard you train, you have off nights or off games, but you can still win, or in my case win the audience over, with your B or C game--with the fall back on skill, training, hard-work, focus, AND, the surrender to what is, not what you'd like things to be. There are many moments of such wisdom throughout this book. Yes, Mariah, thanks.

His writing is straightforward, readable and well-referenced. I especially enjoyed the chapters on nutrition and the dangers of mercury. While many of his approaches are somewhat alternative in nature, Sullivan is careful to maintain a balanced tone throughout this thoughtful and interesting book. The lessons shared here can no doubt help those of us who are looking for similar answers about how to live a healthier, happier life

Introducing readers to chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, candida, allergies, brain fog, the detoxification of mercury and other heavy metals, healing the gut, balancing hormones, clearing infections, proper nutrition, and the spiritual and physical connection with chronic illnesses, Wellness: Piece By Piece provides a concise and complete understanding of the incapacitating disorders. Wellness: Piece By Piece is very strongly recommended as a reliable and "reader friendly" reference or guide for coping with any form of chronic illness with respect to oneself or a loved one.

I have been on a journey to uncover the secrets behind my chronic illness for many years and it wasn't until I discovered Pat Sullivan's book "Wellness Piece by Piece" that things started to make sense for me. I have read just about everything there is out there regarding fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and chronic illness, but I never felt like is was hitting the nail on the head with regard to getting better. I never felt like someone understood the big picture until Pat shared his story. What a gift to hear from someone who has been there and walked out on the other side. Pat's book is like finding the key that unlocks all the secrets to getting better. Each chapter reveals his experience regarding a piece of the puzzle toward feeling better and I have to say that everything he has said, and that I have tried, has been right on. Please, if you are suffering from chronic illness, give yourself a gift, read this book. You won't be sorry.

Illness: One cause, one Solution - Exposing the Truth
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-15
As a fellow chronic sufferer, with much the same story of undiagnoses by the medical establishment and ineffective treatments or incomplete results by the alternative field, this book reveals the Truth that heavy metals and/or negative organisms are behind every chronic disease and what SEEMS a temporary ache and pain that builds momentum into the pits of hell.

Pat outlines the details of his tedious labors, uncovering why he continued to stay sick. Take special note of his message: until you erradicate the offending agent, supplements will have limited results, if any, as in my case and many others, and the liver doesn't know the difference between Prozac and Heroin. All metals are poison. Heart attack? Diabetes? Parkinsons? AIDS? All symptoms.

Pat gives much insight into what HAS helped him mitigate against the toxic load on the body while he was searching for the answer, and breaks down the list of myths that will be encountered in the healing fields, when enough time is spent hunting down the tiger. He also outlines what hasn't been effective to which I also concur in my own experience.

Wellness Piece by Piece is easy to read, hard to put down, and helps to reinforce you can get well when all seems hopeless.

Knowing metals may not even show up on a challenge test until you are chelating for a few months, the word out there by other chronic sufferers, is chelate anyway. The results [or lack thereof] will be revealed soon enough. Pat's book reveals what chelating agents are NOT effective, and with DMSA now available without prescription, anyone can start accomplishing results.

Disease doesn't appear overnight. This book is a must read for chronic sufferers and those who never want to get sick and who have probably already started the disease process and don't even know it! You can also find this book on Pat's Jigsaw Health website.

Like the previous volume, Back Kick, this book will really improve your kicking ability. Imagine a whole book devoted to a single technique!! First of all, I like the analogy of this kick to the swing of a golf club. I had never thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense. The basic description of the kick is filled with various check points at all of the steps of the technique so that you can check to make sure you are performing the kick properly.
As with the first book, my only complaint is that the section on applications has mistakes that the reader is supposed to find rather than showing correct form.
In spite of this one flaw, this book is a keeper!!

I read this book and at first glimpse I thought it was boring. Then one of the references early in the book started to make since. Shawn said that learning to kick is like learning to swing a golf club or something like that. Then it started to click. These books are to be used in conjunction with training. They are your coach and instructor away from class. They will help you to reconstruct your kicking style. You will kick better and perhaps stronger, with correct technique, than you ever have before.
I have only read two of the books in the series but they are both excellent and I hope to get the complete series. I recommend these books to all students and especially to new instructors that may not have all the technical knowledge to teach kicking techniques. I see why they refer to Shawn Kovacich as "the Professor of kicking".

Another excellent entry in the series

Wheel Kick (Achieving Kicking Excellence, Vol. 2) is, like the 1st volume in the series, an incredibly scholarly work.

Though some issues arise for owners of multiple books in the series (namely, a few sections which are nearly direct cut-paste jobs in each manual), nothing is so detrimental as to make it a poor purchase. On the contrary, I believe these to be incredibly important books, as this kind of scholarly approach to a specific technique is very rare, but very useful. Every practitioner could benefit from having a catalogue of this type of work available for each of the techniques in his/her art. Perhaps someday that will be a reality.

The pictures throughout the book are clear, and the diagrams of muscle/bone relationships and how they relate to the kick are very informative and helpful.

Unlike the first volume in the series, I didn't notice nearly as many editing errors in this volume, making it far easier to read.

This series is incredible in the sheer amount of technical detail it imparts, and is truly unique amongst its peers for that reason. I highly recommend Achieving Kicking Excellence to every martial artist who seeks to enrich his/her kicking skills.

The author in writing, "Wheel Kick, Achieving Kicking Excellence", has provided the martial arts practitioner with a good resource for improving their kicking techniques. Much of the opening chapters on Anatomy, and warm ups is repeated from the Authors Back Kick book. I believe this is a good idea, as it allows a person to only purchase the books on the kicking techniques the practitioner is interested and still get this valuable information.
The author starts out with the basic principles of the kick and moves to the basic turning wheel kick. From there, the variations of the wheel kick are described in detail. The author goes on to include training methods, troubleshooting guide and applications of the wheel kick.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their wheel kick and have found the other books in the series to be very helpful in my training as well.

The technical accuracy and detail of this book is phenomenal. In my experience, most training books that detail technique are too vague to be of practical importance, but this book is the exception. Some of the movements are broken down into forty or fifty elements so that you can go right down the line to correct problems in a logical and sequential manner. There are ample progressive photographs, diagrams and illustrations to effectively guide your training and foster great improvement. I can't think of anything that is missing here from discussions of anatomy and biomechanics, all the way through troubleshooting and Q and A. The writing style is concise and quite lucid. If I could have just one training series to help me with my kicking technique, this would be it.

The book is user friendly and offers specific recommendations for pain relief based on the location of the pain in the body. The exercises are quite simple and helpful when one is trying to avoid surgery and/or when other options are not feasable. A real life-saver.

This book is truly a "Do-It-Yourself Pain Relief." I found myself using the book as one would use a dictionary to look up a word but instead I am looking up the right recipe for the terrible pain. The illustrations are very easy to follow as well as the short narrative describing each activity. The book format is user friendly. I highly recommend this book for anyone intersted in learning good stretching techniques.

I am a 100 percent, true believer in the program set forth in this book. I was training for my first marathon with the Team in Training program set up by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society when I was introduced to the book. I had injured my IT bands (on both legs), and was having great pain in my hamstring as it attached to the outside portion behind my knee with just 2 months until race time. These injuries had virtually shut down my training. I was relegated to cardio workouts on my stationary exercise bike.

Being cautious about these injuries that wouldn't go away, I saw an orthopedic doctor one month before the marathon. I was diagnosed with bad IT band inflammation and told myleg muscles were really tight - thus causing some of the additional pain. I was released to go back to running, but told I needed to start stretching my hamstrings and quads. By this time, the pain had subsided a little bit, but not much. When I tried my first run, the pain immediately returned, by this point I started thinking about opting out of the marathon.

Luckily, my doctor had given me the number of Kim Ortloff, one of the authors of this book, to help me stretch. At this point I had already been stretching the traditional way (you know by holding each stretch for 15-30 seconds) with no reduction in pain. I was getting little to no benefit from my efforts so I decided to set up an appointment with Kim.

I was able to professionally work with Kim (3 times before my Marthon) and use the exercises and stretches in this book at home. I was completely surprised, that in a couple of days of following this program I was actually able to start exercising again (walking and jogging 2-3 miles) with greatly reduced pain. During my second session with Kim, and just as a stroke of good luck, she told me that they had just released a DVD version of this book showing the different stretching, exercises and self massage techiniques of the book. I bought the DVD right away.

My injuries had almost completely resolved themselves within 3 weeks of starting this program. I met with Kim one last time, 3 days before the Marathon. By this time my injuries were completely resolved. I was amazed that in three and a half weeks of starting this program I was back to 100 percent.

Less than one month after starting these stretching and exercise routines, I finished the Marathon. I did it my using a technique of walking and running at set intervals, because I felt I had not trained sufficiently and didn't want to reinjure myself.

Additionally, using the techiniques in this book made my post-marthon recover a piece of cake. I was completely recovered from all sore muscles within 3 days. My IT bands are fine, my hamstrings don't hurt at all, and I was walking better than most marathon runners at the post-marathon celebration.

I could not have even thought about competing in the marathon, let alone finishing the marathon had I not followed the techniques that are being taught in this book. I am so excited at the immediate and lasting results that I got from this program, that when anyone asks about my marathon, I make sure to plug this book (and DVD). I even gave 2 copies of the book to my Team in Training run coaches, in hopes that they would employ the principles used in their coaching.

My wife has even used the principals for non-sports related injuries she had in her feet.

As I started off saying, I am a true believer in this program.

Very helpful!

"Pain is the No. 1 reasons for doctor visits. If you live with pain, you are not alone--it is estimated that 100 million Americans live with chronic pain."

These various pains, the authors say, leads to $60 billion in lost productivity and missed workdays.

This is a book that will be handy reference for me as it contains stretches, self-massage and exercise, as well as hundreds of pages of sound advice.

The two expert authors have written an excellent guide to help you and me achieve a life that is active, healthy and free of pain and learn to regain control over our health.

When we are in pain, we are not ourselves, and usually are crabby, can't see or think clearly and get stressed out. Our productivity and personal relationships are affected.

Did you know? The human head weighs 7 to 12 pounds, depending on the individual. No wonder neck and shoulder muscles get tired and weak.

Computers, couches and reclining chairs contribute to poor posture and pain. Sitting--which most of us do a lot at work, and then again at home watching TV or on the computer--places eight times more pressure on the lower back than standing does.

Of the two basic types of pain, acute is when you have an immediate pain from injuring yourself. Chronic, such as arthritis, hangs around and sometimes never goes away.

Several of their chapters deal with specific areas of pain. Those particular chapters make sense if first you read, "Why the Body Hurts," and "How to Manage your Pain." Each section helps us become advocates for our own health and pain-free living.

The last chapter, "If Your Pain Doesn't Go Away" includes questions for when you should see a doctor; what to ask; how to work with your doctor; and how to prevent your doctor from putting you off.

Armchair Interviews says: Even if you get one tiny helpful hint toward your pain control, this book is worth it. Their simple-to-do exercises and strategies have proven to be effective in relieving aches and pains in others. Whose body is it anyway?
