This book is very very raw and gritty. I saw the movie before I read the book so I started reading with certain expectations but it went above and beyond. The writing style is simple; I'm pretty sure anyone (who likes the sport) will be able to get into it. Jake La Motta is a love/hate kind of guy with a very sad life even considering that as a reader I did care about what would happen to him during certain incidents... The book was a quick read (read it on an airplane)...once I finished it pretty much stayed with me...unlike many other books I have read. This is probably my new favorite book to date.

Beyond what the public has seen from Jake Lamottas incredible bouts in the ring, there is much more people should know about Lamottas life. Through this book you will uncover Jake lamottas Physical and mental struggles, whether it be taking a tremendous amount of abuse in the ring and still staying on both of his feet, Or his madness at home with his family and closest friends. He tells his separate problems which included his best friend, his wife(s), and the mafia. His childhood alone as a thug living in tenements in the early Bronx will draw you to read more and soon you will start to understand where all the rage came from.

"Bull" is one of the most powerful biography's written. La Motta went step by step relaying his life story, in a transparent way. He not only draws us in round by round to him being on the top of the world, he also clearly gives the reader his blow by blow decent into hell, and even worse for a showman, anonymity. He became a nobody, because of his unhealthy actions.
I for one give La Motta a tremendious amount of credit, for coming to terms with his greatest opponent and knocking him on the mat, himself.
The movie is equally as engrosing.

The Greatest Sport Yarn Ever Told

There just isn't another biography/autobiography involving an athlete that can measure up to RAGING BULL.

The book depicts self-hate and the self-destruction that goes with it in the kind of succinct style you expect from a ghetto-bred boxer. What sets it apart though is that what one finds between the lines is often more revealing than the lines themselves.

Jake's method of confessing to grotesque acts without the vocabulary of rationalization says volumes about the pathologies behind them. Instead of getting lost in Freudian buzzwords, La Motta recounts his life in terms that sum up and surpass every treatise on self-destruction ever written.

No need for Psychology 101. RAGING BULL is the real textbook on the subject.

Reading this book I felt like Sugar Ray Fighting La Motta - couldn't put it down -

OK - that's a stretch, but you get the idea. I could not put this book down. It reads like a bull charges. A little bit of wind up - I'd say the first 19 pages - then it's a charging bull.

Jake's story is much more than what the movie shows and is different.

As we all know and heard so many times - the book is always better than the movie and again it's very true here - the book is Jake's exact story not changed one hair for Hollywood. It's such an intense, real and gritty story.

It starts off in Jake's childhood as a tuff Bronx kid taking a beating from his father and the world - and as he got older the beatings continue and get worse - the biggest beatings coming from himself.

La Motta is brutally honest and doesn't try to hide anything or paint himself in a special light. It's a powerful and straightforward look at his life, his heart and a candid look at the sport of boxing back then.

It's a great book, you'll pound through the pages like a raging bull.

This is the only yoga book I have ever been able to read and do the exercises. Raquel Welch is amazing. I grew up with her yoga. My mom did it every day. There are some good diet ideas in there as well. I've learned a lot from her book.

I've been practicing the yoga in Raquel's book since I was in junior high. When I started going to yoga class, instructors were impressed with my "beginner" yoga. Altho I have loved many of my yoga classes, I've longed for a class that features the same balance of postures that Raquel demonstrates.

I recently moved to California and tried Bikram yoga. I surprised to find it is the exact same sequence! I couldn't take the heat, so I'm back at home with Raquel. Now if only I could find a class that had the same postures sans heat!

The book is great in that it details the benefits of each posture and the specific steps and breathe within each posture. Each posture is followed by an explanation of common challenges.

I've purchased many yoga books over the years. Raquel's book and Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati are the best that I've found.

Elegant, easy to follow, challenging

This is a fantastic book with the Bikram yoga sequence, presented in a much more clear, easy to follow way (step by step), unlike Bikram's book which is essentially useless for home exercisers, since it has only one photo for each pose with the finished move, without showing how to get there.

Raquel Welch has surprisingly good form. This book is a must have for yoga lovers who dislike endless sun salutations - not a single one here! highly recommended!

I purchased this book back in 1984 and have never found another yoga book with as much detailed written and visual instruction. The next best thing to Raquel's book is taking a class with an experienced instructor. In her book there is a diagram, "A Chiropractic View of the Spine," which explains what areas of the spine effect certain aspects of your health. My favorite part of the book is the "Benefits." Under each pose is a benefit section which tells what that position does for the body and which conditions it can help to relieve.... I have yet to find this information in another yoga or pilates book. After the pose, there is an "Extra Help" section that is really beneficial to newbys. Every detail is covered in her instruction. Would love to see this on DVD(have the video and love it). Bought a second book because the pages are coming out of my original one. The poses in her book are more advanced than in many of the other yoga books. Not necessarily a lot harder, but more bang for your buck.

I bought this book when I was in college in 1987!! The poses are difficult, but Ms. Welch's instruction, and the excellent, un-retouched photos are very easy to follow. The food-combining section is simple to learn and gives immediate results. After doing both the yoga and eating plan for several years, I was in the best shape and lowest weight of my life. Now, nearly 20 years later, I plan to go back to my "old friend" to take off baby weight and get back in shape. I've never found a better book or VHS tape on Bikram yoga.

my search for the perfect book on health and healing is over. I read so many books trying to help heal myself of chronic fatigue syndrome. This book made the most sense to me. It takes dedication to follow the program, but it is worth it. Dr. Stoll and Jan DeCorutney give you lots of motivation in the book. I borrowed it from the library, but will purchase one to keep at home.

Recapture Your Health outlines a balanced solution to improving overall health. The authors call this program a 3LS solution named after the three legged stool which is perfectly balanced and fully functional without a lot of extras that aren't needed.

Like the three legged stool, the 3LS program contains three simple but sturdy elements (nutrition, exercise, and relaxation) that create a foundation for improved health. The nutrition section focuses primarily on minimizing damage caused by the high intake of refined foods in the modern diet. The authors promote a whole foods approach to nutrition that reduces and potentially eliminates all refined foods. This is very similar to the slow food philosophy that is gaining popularity.

Likewise, the exercise and relaxation portions of this program are not radical but are somewhat based in good common sense. Participants are expected to exercise twenty minutes three times a week of virtually any type of activity that gets them moving. Relaxation is guided through various types of formal relaxation exercises such as meditation or guided imagery completed for approximately twenty minutes twice a day.

Priceless Information For Lifelong Health and Maintenance

Walt Stoll and Jan DeCourtney have given readers a chance to redeem their health or maintain it using three simple tools. Seemingly so simple, yet the authors have used their talents to give a good explanation of some of the who's, what's, and why's of the road back to health.

Even if you think you know the information to wellness they present, "Recapture Your Health" is still a great reference to have linking many common and not so common ailments to the modern day interpretation of stress. Many of us have used one of their key elements at one time or another, but in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together you have a great weapon to use in the war against disease.

If you have not yet had to deal with a serious illness or condition, you can certainly can go a long way to prevent it, according to the book, and maintain quality your quality of life for the years to come.

There is nothing really new in this book. Eating well, exercising and relaxing is good for your health. Duh!

But it is very well presented, brings up enough (but not too many) testimonials to be inspiring, it is simply written without complicated theories. The diet is easy to do and presented with lots of details. The proposed exercises are varied - very much along the lines of "do what works for you and do it at least 3 times a week". The Skilled Relaxation is nothing new if you are already familiar with the work of Benson, Cade, Pelletier, Kabatt-Zin, but it is presented here in a non-scholar way that is easy to understand, easy to implement and the book provides the health motivation to keep doing it. Understanding skilled relaxation without actually doing it twice a day is worthless. The text in this book makes you want to do it and to keep doing it.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is sick and hopeless - or anyone who wants to implement good life habits and prevent illness. I like the fact that it does not promise an instant cure for anything but rather proposes a way of living that supports physical, emotional and mental health. Well done!

The weakest point maybe is that it addresses general well being but only mentions in a rather weak way that people with long term diseases may have to be much more specific to completely heal. The proposed diet may not work for everyone, some people may need specific types of exercises and to avoid others, some types of meditation or biofeedback processes may be better than others for some conditions, etc.

However as an adjunct, Dr Stoll bulletin Board [..]) is filled with more specific information and the good doctor is also available to answer questions. A very generous proposition.

Ok - Got to go now and practice my skilled relaxation...

A Recipe For Wellness

Don't be fooled, this book is difficult to read and comprehend. However, for those willing to tread the waters of early 1900s writing styles, the message in this book is wonderful and can potentially change your life.

If you are interested in the money aspect of the law of attraction, you may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsworth.

Wattles' philosopy is New Thought, popular at the turn of the 19th century. It is really just wishful thinking or magical thinking. It doesn't work. Just because you think something doesn't make it come true, and you should be glad, because some people think very unpleasant things. You aren't Harry Potter, and magical thinking won't get you what you want in life. As for Monism or the theory that God is in everything, that would mean that God also exists in evil things, which would mean that God is not all good, so Monism cannot be true. This is just an early self-help book that seeks to empower people who feel powerless by telling them they can get anything they want if they just think about it hard enough and long enough. It's a waste of your time. Wattles wrote the same thing about health, and he died at about age 51. If he had lived to be 100 in good health and been a multimillionaire himself, he theories would be more credible. In fact, one of the people Wattles criticized as being "competitive", John D. Rockefeller, did live to be 98 and was a multmillionaire, so who are you going to believe?

The "Thinking Stuff" which Wallace Wattles declares, permeates the universe really caught my attention. The noted theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg refers to this "Thinking Stuff" as the Divine Wisdom in the book Divine Love and Wisdom, (published in Amsterdam in 1763).

I agree with the premise of Wattles book and as I reflect upon my life I can see where the Lord has indeed blessed me in ways I had desired.

Joe Quirk dances away from all the problems with self-help books, embraces the good parts of science books, and blends in his own character. The result is a hilarious ride through science with lots of "give me pause" and "change my perspective" that self-help books try to deliver and science books never seem to bother with.
My favorite part was the "aquatic ape" theory.
The best line in the book, Pg 138 "...in order to orgasm, some women need to concentrate, and some men, to put off orgasm, need to think about something else. My method is to list each Yankee baseball player's batting average. The second a man thinks about what he's actually doing, it's over. So the only way a man can enjoy sex is to not think about what he's doing. Can you blame us if we extend this strategy to relationships?"

I teach a college-level seminar for science-phobes using popular science literature. Of all the books I have ever used, on any topic, this was the hands-down favorite. The seminar was titled Sex, Gender and Love: A Biological View, and this book covered the love part -- haha. I read it alternately being annoyed at the corny (but devilishly clever) jokes and laughing out loud in spite of myself. Most of all, though, I was impressed by the research that went into each of the chapters and the way Quirk made all our human sexual foibles explicable and hilarious -- nothing better than laughing at ourselves since we're stuck with us! Thanks!

The best book on sexual evolutionary biology. Why both men and women seem to be on different planets. Hm... is there a catchier title?
Perhaps, but not a better book.

Unfortunately, despite his extensive bibliography, Joe Quirk (What the blazes kind of name is that for a scientific researcher? ) does not have a Phd. Neither is he buddies with Oprah, so I doubt this will top the besteller list.

Never mind. I've suffered through many academese imbued evolutionary snoozefests texts. This one will keep you wide awake, I promise.

What Quirk has is brilliance, and (gasp!) an ability to write. He must have had some alpha ancestors during the pleistocene era that could spin some awesome tales by the campfire.

Among The Table of Contents we find such gems as:

Chapter 9: The Jerk Gene
Chapter 12: Why Women are Coy, Men Clueless
Chapter 26: Free Love Causes War

And, for a smaple paragraph:

" Men are attracted to nubility and health. Women are attracted to nobility and wealth. Both want intelligence, kindness, and opulence.
Both want a good sense of humor. They'll need it. "

This book, written by a Physical Therapist, explains and shows the muscles involved in the rotator cuff more clearly than any other anatomy book I've picked up on the subject. He explains what muscles you are strengthening for each exercise. Stretching, very much like yoga stretching, is also included. If I could talk to the author, I would ask him to look up Supported Headstand as a very effective treatment for RCS, too. This is thoroughly explained in volume 16 of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy in a research article entitled Headstand for Rotator Cuff Tear: Shirshasana or Surgery.

So easy to understand! I know have a good knowledge of how the shoulder works. The exercises are very helpful. Got me closer of achieving zero pain. Hardly have pain anymore, mostly tight or a little uncomfortable but that's better than chronic pain ay!! It only takes around 3-4 hours to read. DO IT IF YOU KAIN'T TAKES NO MORES!!

I was afraid I would never be able to lift weights again. Both of my shoulders were in pain, even causing me to have to lie on my back to sleep. I read this book carefully, and have followed the exercise exactly as he directs, and I have zero pain in my shoulders now ! Zero ! And I'm back to lifting weights !
I can't tell you how impressed I am with the research that went into Mr. Johnson's work. He only goes by scientific evidence based upon peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trials. This stuff really works!
By the way, I had the same experience with my back problems after reading "Treat Your Own Back" by Dr. McKenzie

I hurt my rotator cuffs doing some bag work. I waited a long time (I'm a guy) to go into an ortho. He gave me the advice to work on my posture, lose weight and a photocopy of some exercises to do. Told me that how I injured myself didn't matter, fixing it was what counted. Well, posture and losing weight solved that problem.

Had a completely different feeling problem. Went back after eight months of worsening pain. Same diagnosis, they told me it was "referred pain" which was why it felt completely different. Same exercises. You can find them all over the internet.

Didn't do much for me. I slowly got more or less better on my own. But, I had nagging pain every morning, the exercises and stretches did nothing for me.

Rather than go back, I decided to try this book first, based on recommendations from a friend I followed up.

First, the explanations aside, the core of the book is short. You are only going to do about four exercises and four stretches at any one time. There are routines for severe to very mild problems (beginning to advanced).

Second, the explanations made sense and I've been able to apply them to a few other areas.

But, it has been less than a month and I'm waking up pain free from time to time, the first time in a very long time.

Would I pay this much for a paperback? Not usually, but it was a lot better than blowing half a day off from work seeing the ortho sports med guy again. Would I buy a book when the internet is swimming with essays, charts, etc.?

Well, but for the fact it works and the free stuff didn't, no. But the free stuff doesn't quite put it all together the way this does and it didn't quite do the trick.

If you've got pain, if your doctor's routines haven't really done much for you, if the internet hasn't led you anywhere new, you might really want to try this book. It has details on how to do things, number of repetitions, how long to hold the stretches, etc.

Simple? Yes. Five to ten minutes a day simple, but just the right five to ten minutes a day have made all the difference for me.

This book was a blessing to me when I found out my son was diagnosed with Autism. It helped out so much with basic information and were to actually get help. The book also answered questions I did not even think about asking.
I recommend this book to anyone who has an Autistic child/friend/love one to better help in undertanding what Autism is and how you can help.

The Dummies folks have once again put together a great general resource. It provides a good baseline for understanding autism. Another book I found very helpful--and more specific as to curing this disorder--is He's Not Autistic But...: How We Pulled Our Son From the Mouth of the Abyss.

They should give you this book when you get your diagnosis. Seriously! It was the first book I bought on Autism. It's a great place to dive in to Autism. It covers everything from Meds, IEPs, Schooling, Adult programs, everything you NEED to know on the subject. I would recommend it to anyone!

In my opinion this is a very useful book for parents, but not as complete and exhaustive as a teacher (as myself) would need. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5. Easy to read, and complete as far as parents are concerned.

Enligtening and refreshing way to experience asana/movement

I've read and really enjoyed Donna's other books, but never bothered to read this one because of my almost 10 years of practicing asana and having read tons of asana books I thought that all of the books said the same thing. I recently took one of her week long trainings and practically filled my notebook with all of this new and great information. Later I bought this book and lo and behold most of it is in this book and her Breathing Book with pictures to boot. This was really a turning point for my practice as before I was more focused on getting the "ideal" yoga pose and not going with my bone structure. Also instead of forcing something to happen I learned to go with gravity, the breath and my natural structure so I can have 'effortless movement'. This concept opened me up to lots of other books that explore this in more detail.

One thing that really stuck with me (and what I think will help you understand where she's coming from) was in her introduction:
"Increasingly doing "good" yoga has come to mean having a beautiful body, remaining forever youthful, and being able to show one's adeptness through the seemingly solid evidence of advanced postures. But as we stretch our muscles deeply or strengthen our abdominals, are we coming closer to feeling a deep peacefulness within ourselves and an inner equanimity that can meet the challenges of life in a compassionate and skillful way? Like the botanist who finally breeds the perfect rose only to discover that in the process he has lost the fragrance of the bloom, when we strip yoga to its mechanics, we also loose something essential.
I have been as guilty as any of both practicing and teaching yoga in a way that made the postures and practices more important than the spirit of the person practicing them. My early obsession with perfecting the forms of yoga brought with it a greater and greater sense of unease and dissatisfaction. The realization that I had bought into dictum of a culture obsessed with achievement and the unhappiness wrought by such striving led me to a long period of deep experimentation in my own practice....I have slowly uncovered a more natural way of discovering the essence of the practice through form. The forms then become vehicles for experiencing one's essential nature rather than goals in and of themselves. Then whether you attain any particular posture becomes irrelevant. In regards to the inquiry parts of the book, they are a much better way for you to learn and understand your body instead of being told what this is doing and what you should be feeling. It also helps you build your kinesthetic awareness. In the workshop Donna came up to me and asked where I was feeling pain in my spine while practicing cobra pose. At first I was baffled b/c I hadn't requested help and didn't notice anything off the top. But she sat their patiently so I took a moment to inquire within and found "hmmm I do have this little tiny twinge". That was my aha moment. She didn't rush me, accuse me, or tell me anything. I felt as if she had given my power back. My power to listen and to know the truth within my body. It was truly amazing and I will always recommend her if you are looking for a more awakened style of practicing asana.

Since I first began practicing yoga several years ago, I've read a ton of different books on the subject, and so far, this is one of my favorites. Author and yogi Donna Farhi takes some of the best elements from other works and combines them into an extremely readable, practical format. For example, she begins by reviewing the eight-limbed path of yoga and then focusing on a discussion of the "ten living principles" - basically, these are moral and spiritual guidelines from yogic philosophy. She then moves on to the asana limb, or the practice of yoga postures, and introduces seven "moving principles" (breathe, yield, radiate, center, support, align, engage) to assist the reader in gaining a greater body awareness within the poses. Farhi also reviews anatomical information in a way that is much more simple and more accessible than in The Anatomy of Yoga (although this is also a wonderful book).

The second half of the book centers around the yoga asanas themselves. Farhi groups the poses into chapters on standing postures, sitting postures, back bends, arm balances and upside-down poses, and restorative postures and breathing practices. Each chapter begins with incredibly useful information on properly aligning the body, including many wisdoms which I had never seen before. The descriptions of the individual asanas are also enormously helpful; many include variations for those unable to attain the full posture. I particularly liked the suggestions included under the "Having Trouble?" section, as these anticipated common complaints in many of the poses; those who are pregnant will also appreciate the prenatal guidelines given for every pose. For the more difficult postures such as upward bow and reclined hero's pose, Farhi offers prepartory positions, often using various yoga props. Finally, the simple black and white photos provide multiple illustrations for each asana, and I found the companion photos showing "correct" versus "incorrect" versions of the poses to be especially beneficial.

The book ends with a chapter on "Putting It All Together"--ie, sequencing the postures into specific yoga practices. This was the one section of the book that I found to be a bit less helpful, partly because the shortest suggested sequence is an hour long and partly because only the names of the asanas are included here, requiring the reader to flip back to earlier sections of the book for the full pose descriptions. Overall, however, I felt that I learned many new things from this book, and I would highly recommend it to yogis of all levels.

Fabulous information about cutting edge nutritional support, yet from centuries old sources straight from the earth! Everyone needs to read this to know how to provide natural whole food nutrition that none of us gets from our "foods". Much American food isn't even real food --- on what trees do "cheetos" grow?! And why are many labels stating "enriched", or "added vitamins" -- because they refined and processed the essential nutritents out of the food.....so they had to add something back.....foolish and deadly! Most health books have made me suffer through chapters of mush in order to learn what could have been written in a magazine article. This book was different. This book's 300+ pages is a cornucopia of facts about how our bodies work and how they can last longer. A few pages in Chapter three slowed me down somewhat, but otherwise the book is concise and it provided a lot of new knowledge. I now know more about the republic of Georgia, cholesterol, cells, cancer, diabetes, fat people, intestines, diabetes, free radicals, inflammation, how we age, and how brains get screwed up than anyone else on the block.
