i bought this book for my mother who has cirrohsis and recently had a ct scan show up with what appears to be a tumor on her liver. There are no heptologists in our area and the dr's around here don't even seem to care. this book gave my mother some concrete advice how to eat and how to
live. Since going on a super reduced salt free diet, my mother is feeling 100% better. She has lost 30 pounds and has really been encouraged. i am extremely grateful this book was written.. Overall it was written in easily understandable terminology.

I have always had seizures since I was a small child. I had no idea I could do more for myself than take the pills I was given by my doctor. I no longer have seizures since reading this book. I have lost my drivers on occasion due to seizures!!!

The information in this book should be more available to everyone!!! Doctors should be telling people some of the information in this book during their visits. The nutrition section was extremely important to me.

I have a completely new life now after reading this book and Treating Epilepsy Naturally by Patricia A. Murphy. These two books have so changed my life that I can hardly believe it. I wish I would have had these books over 20 years ago. But now, I have them and am so grateful. After having a seizure every week I am almost beside myself now that it has been over 6 weeks. And I haven't even tried everything in these books. Just a few. I wish I could give a medal to the authors. I wish I could express my thanks properly. If you have epilepsy or know someone who does, you won't regret reading these books and applying their advice. They are an answered prayer.

A Classic "Must Read" for epilepsy patients, their families and friends and health care providers

Review Date: 2005-10-26
In spite of no new edition for ten years, this book is still highly relevent. The information on medication is a bit dated but everything else seems to be timeless.

In a world full of medical miracles people often expect a simple solution to their medical problems; i.e., "take a pill and everything will be alright." With epilepsy that is often not the case. There is so much more to the condition than just seizures. There is so much more to treating the disease than just taking pills. Most physicians are so pressed for time because of managed care and too few specialty providers that they rarely have time during an appointment to discuss the many aspects of epilepsy let alone the finer points of treating it.

This book addresses the many facets of epilepsy and suggests ways that individuals can take control of their disease. Most of the ideas are backed up with anecdotal evidence, but the concepts are extremely cogent and intellectually appealing.

Rather than listing the contents of the book I think it is sufficient to say that the book advocates a holistic approach to the person with epilepsy. I heartily endorse that idea. It will be up to the individual and their family to make that happen. Physicians can help by directing people to resources outside of the traditional "just take your meds" approach. It is good to have a balanced approach to this condition.

I highly recommend this book. It is extremely well written and is a joy to read. Of all of the books I have read on epilepsy (so far), it more than any other paints a broad picture of the disease and advocates a balanced approach (between traditional medicine and alternative methods) to helping the person take control of their disease process.

Sex Changing Instruction Manual With Blithe Disregard for Safer Sex
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-28
I read the 2003 paperback edition. Having read previously the 2002 Sexual Selections: What We Can and Can't Learn About Sex from Animals by a liberal feminist biologist, one could get the impression, women can't ejaculate. Reading that, I had had it with false information and ordered this book to make sure. The choice of literature may have been a bit arbitrary, as there are numerous books on the subject available by now (in 2008).

Clearing up the myth of female ejaculatory denial by giving precise and easy-to-handle instructions is worth 5 stars already. I mean, really: Here we are in the age of finding traces of water on Mars, but can't find the well in our lover's or our own vagina! The book touches upon the control of ejaculation without orgasm, orgasm without ejaculation and multiple orgasms in both, females and males. The author doesn't provide instructions for males, though and remains tentative on the ways for males to achieve all of this. Which is partly a good decision, as the one way she is referencing is the Taoist procedure of "inhibitatory ejaculation", which can turn out to be risky to your health, if not adequately taught. And many books which specialize on that issue actually fail to do so. However, there are other and easier ways of "alternative" male orgasm, which she isn't even mentioning. But then again, all of the latter isn't really the content of the book according to its title, so that's ok.

Chapter 7 claims to be for both: Male and female lovers of women, but on a closer look I would say, it's not REALLY going beyond heterosexuality. I am a bit sceptic that you would have to take anything out of the vagina for ejaculation in every single case. For sure, she doesn't write anything about the possibility of female ejaculation via sole or added anal stimulation. The book is mildly repetitive and might have suffered not too much without the sex kitsch fiction included here and there, though I wasn't really bothered by that either.

I seriously considered subtracting more than one star for the blatant disregard for safer sex. The main reason why I ordered this book was actually to find out, wether the female ejaculate carries the HI-virus or not. As of 2003, according to the author, no studies have been done. Which is a scandal, but hardly the author's fault. Yet, there wasn't really a study of the consistency of the female ejaculate either. That didn't stop the author from carrying it into a lab for analysis. Which begs for the question, why she didn't carry an HIV-positive female's ejaculate to the lab, too, for analysis. Recognizing the lack of such studies, she's is giving the following (PSEUDO) safer sex advice: If you are HIV positive, tell you lover! That advice (alone) is problematic on so many levels, including that many HIV-positives don't know that they carry the virus, but are especially virulent shortly after their own infection, that I have to complain most vehemently against that ill advice and the tip to "flood your sweetie's mouth". It gets worse still when she writes about stains on the bedsheet during parts of the menstrual cycle. She doesn't really specify, what causes these stains, but by all available suggestion, she's referring to menstrual blood. If not, she is making the mistake of not clarifying that. Her advice for the lover against such stains: "Gulp it down", for "swallowing could be the tidiest option available". If this book and similar ones with the same utter neglect for safer sex turn the public into a wave of stained female ejaculate gulpers, the AIDS pandemic has the potential of reaching new and unseen peaks.

I know this criticism is a downer. The message is: Enjoy the new found ecstasy and engage in it responsibly. Till the time, studies of stained and unstained female ejaculate have been proven as harmless as saliva or a male's precum, act wise and refrain from mucous membrane contact with it.

Im 28 years old, and up until recently I had only vague knowledge of the G-spot, and I thoughjt female ejaculation was a myth. After all If it existed I would have been doing it for years...

But I have, and didnt realize it.That fluid after sex that wet my husbands boxers, and other things wasnt just alot of lubrication it was leaking ejaculation.

About a week ago my husband shared with me a video clip that he found via internet of a women squirting enough fluid to drench the wall.I was amazed, and a bit jealous I must admit. It looked like the most amazing orgasm, and I wanted to do it myself.

I bought this book after research on the web about the subject. The internet has alot of info , but not enough to "teach" how to do it with control.

Honestly I havent recieved the book yet, but I read enough info on amazons "look inside" option.I used that information to "practice", and after 30 minutes of using the tips inside the book, I did it TWICE.

It is an amazing experience, I cant stop smiling, I called my husband to tell him "guess what I just did?".I cant wait to show him in person.

Im still very interested in reading this book and learning even more.In fact Im more interested now that I know it is 100% possible.

Be prepared, there is alot of fluid.More than I was prepared for.

When I first heard about female ejaculation I was a bit skeptical. Now I am a very satisfied believer. This book covers basic female anatomay and the different types of orgasms a woman experiences. She gives detailed instructions on how to stroke and achieve ejaculation. I wanted to surprise my husband and thought it would take some practice to be able to ejaculate. I was wrong. I followed her instructions and gushed in pure pleasure. I couldn't wait until he got home to show him. Needless to say it was a great night. He loves it when I squirt on him. It makes a great massage fluid.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn how to female ejaculate, or wanting to add a little spice to your love life.

The idea is tapping the energy centers on our body balances/removes the negative energy around us.

So, you think of the problem you'd like to get rid of, say an opposing affirmation you'd like to neutralize it with, then tap/rub the energy centers, and heal it away.

Well, try it. I did, I felt better right away. It's a nice skill to learn. Teach it to your kids, to your friends, family, it's easy and so simple to do.

To do it on animals, just imagine being your pet, and do the same process as your pet.

Best with your healings!

I've been using energy tapping for several years. I went through two of Gary Craig's courses, then began buying books on the subject for further (and different) information. Gloria Arenson's book is simply the best. The reviews here cover most of what I was going to say, so I'll just add a paragraph.

First, the author lays eveything out in a clear, friendly, useful way. Second, she gives helpful examples instead of miraculous case histories. Third, she makes difficult exercises palatable. For instance, I have a hard time sincerely declaring forgiveness for childhood abuse; it never feels honest. But Gloria Arenson, in this neat little book, gives the option of saying something like "My happiness and well-being are no longer dependent on my mother's approval," which is much easier for me to say than "I understand my mother did the best she could with what she knew, so I forgive her."

Little things like this make Five Simple Steps unique. If you're interested in energy tapping, buy it! I ordered a copy for my husband so we can each brightline our own favorite information.

After reading this book I finally feel confident enough to use EFT, or "Meridian Therapy" as the author prefers to call it, by myself! The book lays out the process in a very clear, concise and friendly manner. This is accomplished in the first 50 or so pages. (For instance, the locations of the tapping points are shown more clearly than I've seen anywhere else.)

The rest of the book provides more in-depth examples and case studies, to assist in making it even more easy to understand the process.

This book gives you more than the method; it also boosts your self-confidence so you more easily get started on the journey. Very strongly recommended!

Having purchased and watched the DVDs from Gary Craig regarding the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), I was curious as to whether Ms. Arenson's book would bring any additional insights into applying it; it certainly did. I particularly liked the large number of real-world examples that she cites. If you are interested in a highly practical book about applying EFT to address all sorts of issues, I highly recommend this one.

Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."

Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.

It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.

Review Date: 2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.

The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.

The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".

The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.

Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.

The concepts of this book run so deep and wide that if you just read it off in 2-4 hours in one sitting, you will miss the whole point of the book. This book takes the self-help genre to a new level. Not only from my experience with this book and from meeting the author behind the book, but also from the experience of all of the people I know who have read it, I can say that essentially, to anyone with an open mind, this stuff is awesome. Klemmer's other book about intentions running smack into reality is even better.

The merit of this book lies not in fancy language nor impressive theories and facts. What makes this book different is the RESULTS it produces. Nothing speaks louder than RESULTS.

Magnesium is the great relaxer
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
I knew magnesium was important from other books I had read, and other classes I had taken, but I didn't realize how many things reduce the amount in the body such as, exercise, sweating, stress, prescription drugs, fluoride, and calcium supplementation. Magnesium is necessary to properly metabolize calcium, and it keeps calcium in solution in the body, so it prevents calcifications, which are quite common.

Magnesium is therapeutic in treating the following:
1. Anxiety and panic attacks- because it helps keep adrenal stress hormones under control
2. Asthma - both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with magnesium deficiency
3. Blood clots - magnesium prevents blood clots and thins blood without side effects.
4. Bowel disease - magnesium deficiency is one of the main causes of constipation.
5. Cystitis - bladder spasms are worsened by a magnesium deficiency.
6. Depression - serotonin (mood elevator) is dependent on magnesium for its production and function.
7. Heavy metals - magnesium is essential for the removal of heavy metals such as aluminum and lead.
8. Diabetes - magnesium facilitates the production of insulin and the transfer of glucose into the cells.
9. Fatigue - magnesium deficiency affects hundreds of enzymes, and fatigue is one of the first signs of a magnesium deficiency.
10. Heart disease - The heart requires magnesium as does all muscles.
11. Hypertension, hypoglycemia, insomnia, kidney disease, migraines, nerve problems, PMS, osteoporosis, Raynaud's syndrome, and tooth decay are all aggravated, and sometimes caused by a magnesium deficiency.

Calcium causes muscles to contract, while magnesium gives them the ability to relax. This is why it is so helpful in the treatment of heart disease, asthma, migraines, PMS and Raynaud's syndrome.

She told a very scary story where a Florida high school football coach gave his players a calcium supplement on a very hot day before a game. Eleven players became disoriented and had difficulty walking. Their speech was slurred, they complained of muscles spasms, and they were breathing very deeply. Within an hour eight of the boys collapsed into full-blown seizures. Thirteen of the players reported headaches, blurred vision, muscle twitching, nausea, and weakness. They all eventually recovered. The heat, exercise, and calcium supplementation had driven their magnesium levels dangerously low. Magnesium deficiency may play a role in sudden cardiac death syndrome as seen with athletes.

She generally recommends 600-1,000 mgs, and depending on your health condition will determine what type of magnesium to take. This is one of the better books I have read on natural health care. I'm currently working on a summary for myself, I'm about halfway through and already have four pages of notes. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about natural healthcare.

Calcium without magnesium = major health problems

If you're like me, you know to avoid "miracle" claims for any supplement. So, the title of this book may seem over the top.

But the fact is, magnesium is involved in hundreds of cellular reactions--to the point that if you don't have enough of it, you are breaking down all over. Sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes major ones. And magnesium can help such a wide variety of conditions that it does seem a bit too good to be true.

When I started researching magnesium a few years ago, I found the science so strong and the implications of mag deficiency so serious, I could not understand why more doctors didn't know about it.

Instead, our culture is getting pumped full of calcium, to the point that it is causing serious problems with sleeplessness, breast lumps, repetitive-use injuries, tendonitis, hypertension, anxiety, and even constipation.

A recent study showed that magnesium supplementation even at the point of infant delivery will reduce the risks of a child having cerebral palsy. And women who don't have enough magnesium have higher rates of hypertension during delivery.

I explain it to friends this way: Calcium gives rigidity to the cell, and magnesium gives flexibility. It's not exactly scientifically accurate, but it's close enough.

So, with any problem where you are lacking "flexibility," magnesium might help. Moreover, taken as the experts recommend, it won't hurt you--unlike the pharmaceutical alternatives your doctor might recommend instead.

As a nation, we are largely deficient in mag due to many factors, including high stress levels, consuming too many dairy products, and the quick-growing methods we've employed in our farming practices over the last 50 years. And the industry fixation on promoting calcium is CREATING many health problems.

Carolyn Dean explains everything you need to know about magnesium clearly, factually, and entertainingly. I recommend it to all who care about their health--and that of their loved ones.

"The Magnesium Miracle" is a well written, understandable look at this key mineral. The book details the studies done showing magnesium's role in the healing of so many disease conditions. As the author rightfully says, "We are not drug deficient, but rather nutrient deficient." Also, all the key minerals and vitamins are synergistic in their operation. This means that they work togehter to procuce the desired effect. For example, calcium is a muscle contractent, while magnessium is a muscle relaxant. For magnesium and calcium to do their jobs you also need vitamin D, copper, maganese, boron and zinc. Also these nutrients need to be in the proper ratio to each other. You might have heard that you need two parts calcium to one part magnesium. The author contends that you need one part calcium to one part magnesium. I agree with her.

The author stresses the importance of a healthful diet with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, cold water fish, organic meat, beans, nuts and seeds. She also gives you a supplement protocal for every disease condition talked about in the book. She isn't for mega doses of any one nutrient, but the right ratio of all the needed nutrients. I've known quite a few people, who while professing to be supplement takers, are slip-shod about the whole thing. This approach will not provide the necessary nutrients on a daily basis that are essential to regaining your health. You need to be responsible and discipline yourself to follow a supplement protocal and eat at regular times as well.

The author tells you about the various kinds of magnesium, how readily each one is absorbed by the body and whether they can cause loose stools in sensative people. Dr. Dean takes all the guess work out of chosing a magnesium supplement.

The one negative comment is where the author tells people with certain disease conditions to lay off meat. While some people need more protein and fat than others, we all need some in our diet. Because of the way most animals are raised, of all the foods to purchase organically meat is the most important. While organic meat is definitely more expensive, especially if you are already sick, you do not want to be eating growth hormones, antibiotics, etc. Some people are carbodydrate types, others are mixed types, while still others need a higher fat and protein diet. One simple way to determine your food type is to ask yourself what kind of chicken you most perfer. If like me you love dark meat, you are probably in the last catagory. If you perfer white meat the opposite is probably true. If both are equally appelaing you are probably a mixed diet person. For a more detailed test on this important subject go to Joseph Mercola's website.

I would also highly recommend you you read "Vitamin D Is It The Fountain of Youth?" by Paul Stitt. Vitamin D is another miracle nutrient. The more I study on nutrients the more convinced I become that only what our Creator designed us to function on will produce abundant health. We can't eat junk food, take a multi vitamin and be healthy. Also, lipitor will never replace magnesium. And while natural remedies such as herbs, chiropracitc, etc definitely have their place in a healthful lifestyle they don't replace proper eating, drinking enough water, getting adequate sleep, exercse, sunshine and fresh air. Also having a right relationship with God and close, healthy personal relationships is key to health. We need to learn to take responsiblility in every area of our lives.

This isn't your typical "you need Magnesium so here is where you buy it" and then bloated with a bunch of pages with a thousand sources that anyone can easily find on the internet. This is good reading and well done to open your eyes and make you aware, not only of the need, but the reasons. If you want hand-holding go to the health food store but if you want an education on the subject, this a good one.

I was very impressed by the chapter about physical activities and related effects on health in general.

The author explains in a systematic manner the positive and negative types of physical exercise and training.
I have tremendously enjoyed the therapeutic techniques included in this book, especially those that improve the quality of our health.
As a matter of fact, I began to use some of these techniques, and already I feel much better.

A superb book, and a great health guide.

This is the most complete book I've seen on the subject of natural medicines. It is comprehensive and extremely well written. I haven't been able to put it down and found myself studying it. I have learned so much it may bring me out of the natural medicine novice category. Natural Health, Natural Medicine: The Complete Guide to Wellness and Self-Care for Optimum Health

I'm considered by others to be pretty up (and fairly fanatical) on health issues, though I do go for the occasional bag of chips. This book made me feel like a downright slacker! It also strikes me as being very, well, of the American culture of fear. Everything is terrible and going to kill you. The air you breathe, the chemicals on everything... you should bathe in filtered water?? Come on!

We all know it's not an ideal world, but this book will have anyone taking it too seriously in a real tizzy as you can't do a thing without causing yourself and those you love some grievous bodily harm.

It's interesting, but take it with a grain of salt. Oh wait-- NOT SALT!!

The pouty look on the author's face on the cover of the book should be enough for anyone to know exactly how the book will read.
As a current Hodgkin's patient, I was highly disappointed in Only When I Sleep. I kept reading it only because I wanted to be able to write a review here to counter those that convinced me I should buy the book. I am experiencing how personally devastating cancer can be, however, I am ashamed (and a little bit angry) that people might think that all cancer patients behave like spoiled children, moping around in search of pity and verbally abusing those who love them.
There are certain emotions and ideas about cancer which the author writes about that I do agree with; however, it's mind-boggling why someone would want to actually put their selfish and immature behavior on display like this. Shaw-Brawley wasn't happy unless everyone was coddling her; she had to see everyone cry over her before she was happy. Her poor parents and husband deserve some kind of award for putting up with her--they were probably exhausted by the time her treatments were over. I agree that families experience cancer right along with the patient--there's no denying that--but none should have to suffer like Shaw-Brawley's.
I don't doubt that keeping a journal throughout her ordeal was beneficial and cathartic to Shaw-Brawley, it was not something I feel she should share with the world. In no way am I saying that what she was feeling was wrong or that she should have kept it bottled up...it just wasn't worth publishing. Journals are meant for personal reflection and should be kept in a box in the back of the closet.
I gave the book two stars only because it must have took some kind of gumption to show this side of herself in a book. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this book...neither the writing or the editing is that good anyway.

Lisa is a brave and intelligent person. The words she writes of her cancer experience are from inside her soul, they are real. She dares to speak of her fear. You can hear her fear and her courage to fight fear. She insists on explaining this life changing event. She describes cancer's potential and how paraylzing an experience can be. I myself am a (2) time Hodgkins Disease survivor. I can relate to Lisa in many, many ways. The title, "Only When I Sleep," says it all. I strongly encourage anyone to read this book to hear words of a cancer experience and the meaning of a cancer survivor. Those who have experienced cancer and read this book will applaud Lisa for her strength to overcome adversity and commend her for not letting her experience go unnoticed. That yes, Cancer is life changing, it will try to take you down, but for many not without a fight. With a loving support system, you can overcome.
Thanks Lisa, and happy healthy - life to you and yours.

This is a wonderful book. It will make you cry, but will also bring joy to your heart and a smile to your face. It makes you realize the "choices" Lisa and her family had to make to survive where very hard for her and her family. You will admire her strength, courage, and her determination to beat this. You see first hand how it effects everyone in her family. How the love of her husband, parents, family members and friends are unconditional. It shows us how the small things we all take for granted can be taken away from us in seconds and our world can be turned upside down. How Lisa never gave up and if you "believe" anything is possible.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just those dealing with cancer. There is a "lesson" for everyone to learn from Lisa's experience. It's a WONDERFUL story of love, courage, faith and determination of a young woman who is fighting to survive cancer.

Only When I Sleep: My Family's Journey Through Cancer is an intensely personal, candid, and compelling account of then 24-year-old Lisa Shaw-Brawley's battle to overcome Hodgkin's disease and give birth to a child. This superbly written and presented biographical account is an inspiring testament to the human spirit in overcoming adversity and striving for a dream against all the odds. Highly recommended reading.

I think this is an excellent refresher for people who know Pilates. I'm living in No.Carolina (from NYC) and needed something to keep me going as I can't find a Pialtes studio here. What a perfect exercise companion, with easy, clear examples, plus a couple of great exercises to do while sitting at my desk, etc.

Finally a Fitness Routine I like!

I tried several other books and videos and this was the clearest and least intimidating. People looking for an introduction to Pilates, this is definately the right book for you!!!
