All I can say is I wish I had seen this book a few teeth ago!
Fortunately there is still time to save the rest of my teeth with the clear advice of Dr Sydney. I take the book with me to my periodontist to make sure he is up to date!

Fear has always kept me away from the dentist, but no more!

When I was told that I had gum disease, I got really scared and of course wanted to ignore the advice of my dentist and the obvious signs in my mouth that something was wrong! Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's no-jargon guide and now I know that most of my fears were based on fiction and not fact. RECOMMENDED reading for cowards and the enlightened who want to save their teeth. The easiest visit to the dentist I ever had!!

Ignorance Is NOT Bliss!!

I thought I could ignore my teeth and the would NOT go away...I was wrong! After loosing two teeth, I went to my dentist and he said "you need a periodontist!". Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's book BEFORE I got there. What a relief to find out that even though I had lost two teeth there was still time and modern therapy to save the rest. My treatment is almost completed now and the guide and my periodontist showed me that while ignorance is not bliss there was still time to get my gums healthy when you have the true facts presented. I recommend this book to all the cowards among us. It's easy to read, comprehensive and according to my periodontist accurately represents today's state of the field. I have given the book to a number of my friends who told me their gums were bleeding but thought that was normal. This book is an eye-opener for those who have had their heads in the sand. Take it with you on your professional visits it really helped me to understand all the treatments.

This book is a must have for anyone studying forensic anthropology/ osteology. The book is very straight forward in describing topics, easy to read and understand, and it is not dry. This book is great for new students on the topic and it makes a great reference guide too.

Use it as an Intro and nothing more

This book is a good introduction for students that has never studied the subject or a student who has very little understanding in the processes involved in Forensic Anthro. There are some errors in the book though; this is annoying, and may add some confusion to the unsuspecting student.

Great book!

Good book for an introductory forensic anthropology course. Doesn't use a lot of technical talk, great examples and case studies. Two thumbs up!

This is a very helpful book to oral surgeons, oral surgery hopefuls, and general dentists alike. I am in a General Practice Residency at a hospital and this book is great to provide a good background in hospital dentistry so you don't look clueless in front of the medical doctors in the rest of the hospital.

Great Quick Reference for all !!!!

It is a great quick reference to questions that are thrown at me all the time. I highly recommend
this as the first text to buy when you start your residency. Don't run out and buy the expensive books yet. Use this reference until you get a feel for what texts you want to purchase!

Up to date information with limited scientific background and literature review. However, good quality photos and print makes the book good for understanding and explaining periodontal procedures.

It is exciting to see the tremendous progress in the field.

Initial chapters cover diagnosis, treatment planning, and medically compromised patients. These are followed by chapters on specific procedures, each procedure is covered by both chronological clinical photographs of specific cases, including pre and postsurgical ones, as well as by discussion of the technique, with ample literature sitings about the success level of each. The newest techniques, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and bone grafts, are also covered, with the final chapter on supportive periodontal care. Figures are used when necessary, along with radiographs, and a few histological slides.

There is not an excessive amount of text, so reading about each procedure is easily accomplished, nor is textbook jargon used. Unlike some surgical textbooks, the photographs have been cleared of debris and the tissue is easily seen. Each photograph has been taken from the same location (or edited to approach this) for ease of viewing, understanding the technique, and comparing of techniques. Each technique is evenly handled as to its success (or failure) based on the research that has been done. The hardback text size is larger than normal so that the font and illustration size is comfortable for reading.

Many of the postsurgical photographs illustrate many of the remarkable successes now possible, especially in grafting. To their credit, each technique, even if it is not all that new, has incorporated the latest in materials and instruments. The chapter on mucogingival considerations for the adolescent patient puts together many concepts not witnessed before; it is a very exciting mixture since it covers both orthodontics and aesthetics to allow a healthy adult periodontium. A really interesting book, complex and complete under many points of view. I would recommend this book to every orthodontist, even if your dental background is different, there are a lot of good ideas, tips and suggestions for your everyday practice. If you are an experienced orthodontist you will find many interesting ideas to rethink and to reconsider again.

This is the best book ever written about orthodontic diagnosis. It is a logical approach to orthodontics that requires also logic-based and precise biomechanics to be accomplished. If you want to learn to think to ellaborate your treatment plans, instead of simply following what other people say, you should get this.

Preventing and reversing gum disease

Review Date: 2003-05-23
This is an excellent book written by a very dedicated dental hygienist who does her best to impart her years of acquired wisdom, so that we can take responsibility for our dental health and protect our teeth. The author teaches us that most people lose teeth as they get older, not because of tooth decay, but rather because of gum disease.

She explains what happens and why, and goes on to teach us how to look after our gums, whether they are currently good, or in bad shape. She show us how to set up an at-home hygiene center for looking after our gums.

This book contains lots of very useful information, not just from an understanding viewpoint, but from a practical self treatment viewpoint as well.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to prevent or treat gum disease.

The book has good tips and info that I found helpful reminders I already knew but needed to be refeshed about them I realized. A few things mentioned in the book I found worthy of pen highlighting. However, from the reviews I thought it to have something very outstanding I or most people wouldn't normally or have never known/heard about. Maybe perhaps too on a deeper level this is what I and many others are looking for...a miracle. Perhaps I have to be a bit realistic as well. I think for others who are totally new might find this book enlightening and helpful guide. Having been familar with Perio process first hand, natural heatlth remedies, and veganism...I didn't find the book all that unique or earth shattering. It is a nice, straightforward, primer/overview of some basic things. It is good too for those new to Perio issues that it offers chapter on what happens with a Perio exam what to expect...and so forth. The book explains also what, how, and why gum disease starts. It has a tooth chart but not very helpfull for me in that I would have appreciated an actual mouth drawing like the lay person is familiar with...even having Perio experience first hand doesn't make me an instant dentist. On earlier pages there is a whole run down as to what tooth relates to what parts of the body. However, there is no reference to the fact that a tooth chart exists later on. In fact, the earlier run down has the number and technical name of each tooth..yet not very helpful to the lay person if there is not a useful visual to refer to that corresponds to the numbers and technical names easily. In other words "Tooth Chart for Dummies". The book offers consistant mention of foods that are good for the health of the gums and so forth. It also makes reference to illness and life changes that may involve gum disease...and again it takes the time to mention foods, supplements that can help. The standard mention of the maintainance of good diet, excercise, and such is in the book.

As far as I know, this is the number one book that is being used by just about every dental scholar in preparation for the CRDTS Dental Boards. I have seen many questions taken word for word from that text into the computerized CRDTS test. It would also work for the WREB.s to a slightly less degree. Thumbs up!

This book is very hard to come by - but it is extremely helpful in studying for the CRDTS written exam (after you have already studied for NBDE part II with dental decks). I don't know one dental student in my class who studied without it for the CRDTS exam. The only annoying thing is that all the answers to the questions are in the back of the book, so you have to keep flipping back and forth. Or just be smart about it and photocopy the answer pages and just use that as a separate answer booklet on the side.

This is the Bible of dental books on small animal dentistry. Even though it is in black and white, there are pictures and just about every topic is covered from scaling teeth to dental surgery. Pictures of scalers, and polishers, types of drugs used and step-by-step procedures will be useful for beginners to experts. May I eat my words if this book does not prove to be worth its weight in gold!

For the average technician in a small animal practice, I think this book is informative and useful. It's a very complete book regarding small animal dentistry and everything involved, from ananatomy to anesthesia to abnormalities. It's a great book to be used as a textbook in a technician program. I recommend this book for both the new technician just starting out or for the experienced technician looking for a refresher or a review book.

MUST HAVE for Dental Students Esp. NBDE PART I
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-27
I'm prepping for NBDE I, and I'm really glad I found this book. It's essentially all you need for the Anatomy Section. It's a tough book to read but when you understand it, you're in a position to teach your classmates.

BRS Anatomy, First Aid NBDE, Decks don't even come close to the depth and effectiveness of this book. It covers all the major systems you need in the anatomy section, including neuro and embryo,(with obvious emphasis on the intratemp, pterygo, oral, and pharyngeal regions.)

I have trouble remembering structures and their location without understanding their fxns. That's why Netters or Clemente just doesn't do it for me, there's no explanations. This book is the best because it ties up structure with fxn, which in my opinion is the right way to learn anatomy.

For example: When other books just tell you 1st order neurons of pain and temp of the head and neck synapse on trigeminal gang except for proprioception, this book gives you pictures on why proprioception is the exception. Shows how it goes straight up to synapse on the mesencephalic nucleus. But before all that, this book will give you a general neuroanatomy overview on major sensory and motor systems. So you actually understand the crap you're reading. Not just memorizing words.

A useful guide to dental anatomy
