When I first saw this book delivered, I was a little bit shocked with large volume. But, I thought that large font, colorful photos and cleanly designed layout makes it worthful for its price.
In field of fixed prosthetic dentistry, there is no recent publication except but a few case review series. If we wants to review this book, we would get a better chance to rehabilitate oral health of our patients in a good status with pain-free, esthetic and functional masticatory system.

"Joey Goes to the Dentist" is a great book. I thought it was well written and the photos were pretty cool. Very informative and will help young children better understand what to expect when they go to the dentist. I felt the authors did their homework well & knew what they were talking about. I would definitely recommend this book!

The unknown as well as a change in routine can be terrifying to children. By exposing children to what to expect at a dental visit, many fears can be erased. Youngsters will love going over the steps of a visit to the dentist, looking at and discussing the wonderful pictures and story. This book paves the way for a secure, comfortable dental experience, rather than the terrifying uncertainty. We gave this book to a friend's son for his birthday. It worked! His first visit to the dentist went so well!

Very informative!

This is a delightful book that teaches children about a typical first visit to the dentist. For a child, a new experience can create anxiety, but Joey's experience shows going to the dentist can be an interesting learning adventure. The pictures are also a great way to tell Joey's story.

This atlas has the advantage of having sections based on the appearance of the lesions, thus giving you an easy way to look at a group of lesions as you are narrowing down your diagnosis. Each named lesion has a heading for description, etiology, typical visual clues, the differential diagnosis, diagnostic steps, treatment recommendations, suggested follow-up, clincial significance, and other useful clinical information. The photographs are clear and very descriptive.

Overall, this is an excellent reference text and it has the advantage of being remarkably reasonably priced considering the rest of the available options. It is also more user friendly and better organized as well. The spiral binding makes it easy to keep the book open while using it, and there are tabbed reference pages for the start of each section; the sections are white lesions, red lesions, ulcerated lesions, blistering/sloughing lesions, pigmented lesions, papillary lesions, and soft tissue enlargements. I returned the atlas that was required for my dental hygiene oral pathology class, and bought this one instead since it is the superior choice.

This book boasts 491 superb photos cleverly arranged to face the accompanying text. The explanations are not long and frightening but suitably succinct. You learn the presenting signs and symptoms, histology, disease progression, treatment options and likely prognosis; ideal for exam revision and coping with clinicians.

This book includes a short section on what is normal and normal variations present in the populations, which is particularly helpful especially for students who have only a limited clinical experience of what is normal. Diagrams with accompanying photos of clinical presentations and text explain diagnostic and descriptive terminology, aiding understanding of diagnoses and application of appropriate terms to clinical findings. The remaining chapters deal with the common oral diseases by anatomical landmarks (teeth, gingivae, tongue etc) and by colour changes (red, white, pigmented). Presenting and explaining conditions peculiar to the hard tissues, periodontal diseases, soft tissue lesions, benign and malignant neoplasms and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. The book includes a number of useful appendices. These include a translator for those common Latin abbreviations that leave us all clueless. The quick guide to the diagnosis and management of the most common oral lesions is excellent, I just wish that within the sections diseases were listed alphabetically and thus easier to find.

This book is an excellent aid to revision and includes a self-assessment quiz to help with exam preparation. It is also a handy guide for clinics, although it is too large to fit in a pocket and sneak onto clinic the size has allowed a much more practical and readable text. My copy is proving invaluable and is well thumbed, the cover is a little flimsy but can be easily transformed with some sticky back plastic and a bit of Blue Peter know how. This is a book I will continue to dip into

I'm in family medicine and encounter oral pathology on a regular basis. This book can't be beat for the purpose of recognition and diagnosis of oral diseases. Excellent photographs and explanations cover the full gamut of pathology likely to be encountered, and arranged according to useful diagnostic schemes - by type, color, location, etc. Even contains an extensive quiz at the end to test your mastery. I liked it so much I bought another one for my dental hygienist wife (who also loves it).

From the start I felt intimidated by the title and even with the mitigating suggestion that this would be practical, a guide, and for the clinician, the challenge was there. Throughout our training, in textbooks and journals, and in many lectures, we have to analyze the information put in front of us. Our background in basic statistics is typically primitive, and certainly could use some help in understanding what we read. This very readable and even interesting 200 plus page book really fills that need. With an introduction as much seductive as informative, Dr. Katz makes his way through his early chapters discussing common uses, outcome variables, types of regression and other basic definitions. He uses the question and answer format which lends itself to learning the information in a building block manner. He constructs the book with numerous examples, handy tables and graphs and very helpful side boxes filled with pithy hints for making progress through the book. Each chapter has a built in summary and completes the questions asked. The index is complete and very pointed, making the reader able to use the book not only to learn the subject, but to refer back to previous reading. This book had an enthusiastic first outing, and certainly this second edition is worth the price for a good reference. Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association, Vol 104 (8), 2006, p.395

This is one of the best books I have ever read about biostatistics. It takes you further -from the usually well known table statistics to the model statistics using a step by step approach. Without covering the overall field, it tries to fortell readers' questions and answers them in the most explicit way. It's a book to understand what is going on around journals and makes your steps easier once you decide to try your way to dive in your numbers.

Poor organization: But Brief and Well Written
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-05
I used this book for a class last year. I found the organization quite horrible. There are 3 main multivariate models that he discusses in the book: Multiple regression, logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards. He ignores ANCOVA, ANOVA and multi-level frequency table (chi-square) methods.

Instead of writing about the 3 main multivariate models above individually he sporadically switches between all 3 models. The TOC is organized as a series of questions and answers. I would have preferred he wrote about each of the 3 topics separately.

Although finding the information you want is difficult, the book is written superbly. He makes it easy to understand difficult concepts such as interactions, model building, collinearity and testing of assumptions. You don't need a math background to understand this book. Aside from the organization of the contents, I loved this book! I would recommend for clinicians who are interested in learning about how multivariate models are created. If you review a lot of manuscripts in medical literature, this is a must read.

An easy understanding of multivariate analysis!

Review Date: 2000-11-23
Straightforward approach to the concepts of multivariate analysis (MA) in medicine. If you don't know anything about MA and wanna understand it in a easy and fast way, this is the book. Katz also helps you to perform your own analysis. However, it's important to point out that a solid basis on statistical methods are needed for choosing the best method in a particular situation. The Cox model is not the solution for all problems!!! No strong math background is needed. This is a book of concepts and not of techniques. At least I can guarantee you'll understand the multivariate analysis published in NEJM and will find out about how common multivariate analyses are inappropriately used in medical journals. A big plus that every physician must read!

Finally,an user-friendly statistic book

I have to say I'm really impressed by this book. Its problem-based,user-friendly approach is a stand-out among all other statistic textbooks. The author did an excellent job in explaining the difficult concept of multivariable analysis using easy-to-read English and no jagons. Highly recommended for all.

As a busy clinical otolaryngologist in Lutherville Maryland, who is called upon to render opinions on all manner of oral lesions, I am pleased to finally have a comprehensive reference to make my practice more precise and treatment rendered more effective. This book is very well illustrated and provides an in-depth yet telegraphic approach to the wide range of oral pathology that is encountered in the general clinical practice of ENT. I recommend this well referenced book to all of us in allopathic medicine, who are not extensively trained in benign oral lesions, but are in need of a cogent answer to the question "Hey Doc look at this and tell me what you think it is?". I now have a "go to" reference for this exact need. Mark Williams MD

It seems as though this book was rushed to be published. It not only has a number of grammatical errors, but factual as well. If you're smart enough to catch the errors, then good for you. If not, you'll risk getting some important points wrong on the boards. I find myself having to cross-check with our core text books repeatedly and I've only studied 4 sections of the book so far. I used the FIRST AID for the USMLE to study for the NBDE part 1. That text was great and helped me score a 91%. Unfortionately, this book is disappointing and frustrating.
This will probably be a good book in a few years once it's really edited.

There is nothing in the marketplace like this book. I have attended several lectures on this topic but never had any take home material to use on Monday morning in my practice until now. The photos are sharp and in color making it easy to identify the location of the instrument tip and hand positions. Ms Millar has thought of everything by also advising the clinician of the seating position and posture which will reduce muskuloskeletal problems. The layout of the book by sextants makes it easy to find the area that you are interested in and the pages can be wiped down after touching them with gloved hands. I find the exercises very useful in the middle of my day to prevent the aches which often accompany a day full of patients. Over the years, I have taught advanced instrumentation to hygienists and periodontal graduate students and the information in Ms. Millar's book adds one more layer to the skill level of the clinician.

I am pleased with all my heart to give 100% to the Reinforced Periodontal Instrumentation and Ergonomics for the Dental Care Provider written by my DEAR Professor and Friend Diane Millar. Her an amazing technique literaly saved my live, my carreer and my wellbeing. While I was going through my DH school I had started an enormous pain in my wrists. I chared my worries and pain with Diane. Immediately, she introduced me to her imazing technique. It is the BEST thing have ever happen. I have been using Diane's Periodontal instrumentation technique for the past 4 years. I have never "pocked" my finger. I have an absolutely amazing control of my scaling and comfort for my patients. I love it! I propogate it as much as I can and I will give 100% to the BEST technique in Dental Hygiene. My wrists are doing absolutely fine. I literaly avoided a carpol tunnel surgery. This technique is UNIQUE, SAFE and PREVENTIVE for the long term Dental Hygienists. I recommend to use it. Just get the book, do all the steps and you will fall in love with it. I CAN'T live without it, so do my patients. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU! Sincerely, Natalia DeRojas, BS, RDHAP.

I recently purchased this book and am somewhat skeptical of the "reinforced" techniques - while they may reduce strain on your joints, every technique replaces the mirror as a cheek retractor with a finger!!! Doesn't this increase the risk that you may accidentally hit your finger while scaling???

Perhaps the author will read this and can comment on the safety!

I have a copy of Diane Millar's book and I have to say I am very impressed. For years I have followed the studies on the significance of proper ergonomics in the prevention of repetitive motion injuries. I am happy to find a book which clearly outlines techniques for hygenists to utilize to avoid life changing injuries, as well as addressing the comfort of the patient. The book makes it easy to start the day off correctly by following her outline for stretches. Standing dentistry is returning to the mainstream and it is helpful to know that back pain can also be avoided by changing one's standing and sitting postures throughout the day. I think this book is very well done and I highly recommend it.

This book may not be exactly what you think. It basically is a holistic dental hygiene book. This is dental hygiene taken to the next level. Ms. Senzon includes sections on nutrition, self care, practicing yoga, herbs and tinctures and teeth cleaning strategies. Ms. Senzon also reminds us what alternative dental people all say, bacteria are not the cause of gum disease.

The basic premise is if you keep your teeth clean in a careful manner she describes, and visits a dental hygienist who is more holistic or alternative oriented, then most gum problems can be resolved.

This is an excellent book written by a very dedicated dental hygienist who does her best to impart her years of acquired wisdom, so that we can take responsibility for our dental health and protect our teeth. The author teaches us that most people lose teeth as they get older, not because of tooth decay, but rather because of gum disease.

She explains what happens and why, and goes on to teach us how to look after our gums, whether they are currently good, or in bad shape. She show us how to set up an at-home hygiene center for looking after our gums.

This book contains lots of very useful information, not just from an understanding viewpoint, but from a practical self treatment viewpoint as well.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to prevent or treat gum disease.

The book has good tips and info that I found helpful reminders I already knew but needed to be refeshed about them I realized. A few things mentioned in the book I found worthy of pen highlighting. However, from the reviews I thought it to have something very outstanding I or most people wouldn't normally or have never known/heard about. Maybe perhaps too on a deeper level this is what I and many others are looking for...a miracle. Perhaps I have to be a bit realistic as well. I think for others who are totally new might find this book enlightening and helpful guide. Having been familar with Perio process first hand, natural heatlth remedies, and veganism...I didn't find the book all that unique or earth shattering. It is a nice, straightforward, primer/overview of some basic things. It is good too for those new to Perio issues that it offers chapter on what happens with a Perio exam what to expect...and so forth. The book explains also what, how, and why gum disease starts. It has a tooth chart but not very helpfull for me in that I would have appreciated an actual mouth drawing like the lay person is familiar with...even having Perio experience first hand doesn't make me an instant dentist. On earlier pages there is a whole run down as to what tooth relates to what parts of the body. However, there is no reference to the fact that a tooth chart exists later on. In fact, the earlier run down has the number and technical name of each tooth..yet not very helpful to the lay person if there is not a useful visual to refer to that corresponds to the numbers and technical names easily. In other words "Tooth Chart for Dummies". The book offers consistant mention of foods that are good for the health of the gums and so forth. It also makes reference to illness and life changes that may involve gum disease...and again it takes the time to mention foods, supplements that can help. The standard mention of the maintainance of good diet, excercise, and such is in the book.

Important book!!!!!
