curing tooth decay

Review Date: 2008-05-12
Rami Nagel's book is a unique combination of information about curing tooth decay, based mostly on diet. Drawing from previous research, like that of Dr. Weston Price, and personal experience, Nagel's book is readable and helpful because it is written by a "victim" of tooth decay - a person like you or I. However, as Rami outlines his research and experience, one sees that this book is not a step-by-step guide to immunity; rather, it is a work that encourages the reader to step outside of the box and question explanations offered by the experts. Rami's book asks important questions about why dentistry is shaped the way it is and the implications it has on our teeth.

However, this book does not stop there. In addition, Rami guides the reader to liberation and independence with diet and tooth-cleaning guidelines and recipes, all the while emphasizing the importance of listening to one's body and following one's instincts - insisting that we do not have to be victims, after all.

In addition, the book has a substantial section devoted solely to children's diets and the connection to their healthy teeth.

The diet recommended in this book can be adjusted to suit vegetarians; however, vegans will have to make some significant alterations to their diets in order to take Rami's advice.

'Cure Tooth Decay' offers concise guidelines and suggestions for choosing healing foods. There are a few recipes, but mostly Ramiel refers to other sources for more detailed meals. It is not dogmatic about what exactly you must eat, and stresses listening to what your body wants in the moment. At the same time, the 'To Avoid' section is very precise, and while there is a section about vegetarian choices for tooth health, both protocols call for at least dairy consumption so it would be impossible for vegans to follow. The guidelines also call for eating lots of vegetables and veggie juice.

The material is largely based on the work of Dr. Price, the first research director at the American Dental Association. Price studied the changes in health of indigenous people who were exposed to modern foods. The evidence (lots of pictures of adult and child teeth included) is pretty compelling.

It is actually quite fun learning the guidelines. I enjoy freaking out my house mates by slurping down raw milk and eggs, and gobbling up bits of raw steak and liver (from good sources, and properly prepared as outlined in the book), and following it with some veggie juice. You really do get a vibrant, solid feeling from eating foods like these.

This book will not heal tooth decay for you. It is a call to take responsibility for your own health, to look within for answers instead of looking to dentists and "experts" (though Ramiel does recommend seeking professional advice when necessary). It reflects ancient wisdom about food and our bodies that I think will ring true or sound familiar to many people. And in addition, Ramiel has added many other resources for information about health and nutrition in other websites and books.

I recently tried the Cod Liver Oil by itself for a tooth that was bothering me for 6 months, and boy what results. Having gone to the dentist 3 times and getting fillings for the same tooth twice, then being told I needed a crown and possibly a root canal, I decided to do some investigating. Tried the Cod liver Oil that I got at GNC, and my tooth stopped hurting that same day, and everyday it got stronger and now I can chew on it. Our bodies are amazing thanks rami.

I noticed some deterioration in my teeth last year, so I started searching online to find out whether anyone knew anything about healing teeth. I found Rami's website and decided to buy his book. Although I had heard of Weston Price and Nourishing Traditions before, it was through Rami's book that I really came face to face with that information. It made a lot of sense to me. Especially thought-provoking for me was Rami's message to vegetarians (I had been one for 15 years). It was also helpful that he had actually set down a dietary protocol whose specific objective is to help teeth heal, which Dr. Price reportedly did not do. The protocol is challenging for me, but I have been introducing elements of it to the best of my ability.

Then I lost a filling. The first dentist I saw diagnosed decay and a probable need for a root canal, and said that the tooth might already be dead. Her pronouncement caused me untold agony over the next several weeks. Then a holistic dentist determined that the tooth is alive and recognized that it has totally re-enamelized. He simply replaced the lost filling. He told me I am lucky, because most people are not able to get their teeth to re-enamelize like that. Well, I am now a believer. Nourishing Traditions is for real, and it was with Rami's explanation and guidance that I found a way to help my body contain the damage in my teeth. My relief at this outcome is immeasurable.

We have been conditioned to believe that the only opinions worth having are those that come from people who have been formally trained and licensed, but I believe that formal training can be restricted and biased, and does not necessarily consider all possibilities. Here is the work of someone who questions the knee-jerk assumptions of the industry and who has taken the trouble to do the research and the self-experimentation in an effort to find a better way. I am very appreciative that Rami has chosen to share his findings, relieving us from each having to go through the whole process of trial and error from scratch. And he brings some much-needed balance to a subject that is approached by so many from a place of fear.

The bottom line is, it works for me

I have to respond to another reviewer who liked the book but questioned its trustworthiness due to some legal trouble Randall was in when he first broke into the business. From what I understood, it all stemmed from business/legal issues that had nothing to do with his qualifications as a dentist. It's not appropriate for me to go into details here, but he IS an excellent dentist. I know. I was his patient for several years. I had a lot of work done and he did an outstanding job. I was impressed by his articulate explanations of the procedures and his professionalism in general. And I've not had a problem with my teeth since. He was also the only completely painless dentist I've ever had. I'd recommend his dentistry to anyone and I'd recommend his book to anyone too.

Having known Dr. Randall Nozawa for almost 10 years I have to first tell you that he is one of the most genuine and pleasant individuals I have ever met. I am of the opinion that this is a wonderful book for anyone looking for answers about dentisty. It wasn't until I read Dr. Nozawa's book that I truly realized what a difficult and for the most part thankless job most dentists have. This book truly did give me an inside view into the world of denistry. I think that after reading this book that you will never be able to look at your family dentist the same way. Dr. Nozawa thank you for laying it all (the good, the bad, and the ugly) out there for us in laymen terms.

Growing up in an Eastern European country where the "art" of dentistry was, well, still just a science, the thought of having to go in for my regular check-up, or, heaven-forbid, actually needing some work done, used to put me in a cold sweat. I had the great fortune of being introduced to Dr. Nozawa a couple of years ago, and for the first time in my life my panic attacks associated with the dentist visit have vanished. Dr. Nozawa's book gives insight, emotion, and practical advise for proper dental care. It's smart, to-the-point, and an absolute must-read. Am I biased because I'm a patient? YOU BET! For a good reason: he's a fantastic dentist.

The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29. Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.

Going to the dentist is something that most kids (and adults!) fear. And why not? It's invasive, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful to have someone poking around in your mouth with metal objects. However, it's necessary, and having a healthy attitude about it will promote lifelong oral health. This book is a great place to start if you're looking to help alleviate your child's fear about going to the dentist. It'll help open up a dialogue about your kid's fears and help you to explain why the dentist is so important. Wonderful!

Great, great book to read before taking a child to the dentist for the first time!

Grab this book - this one should be in every library! It's a great hit at our house because in places, it's quite funny! Sister wakes up one morning with a loose tooth and thus, talks funny! The words are spelled as such so my little one gets quite the chuckle out of how sister says certain "s" words! Anyway, sister spends the entire day wiggling her loose tooth until it's time to take brother to the dentist for his checkup. The dentist finds that brother has a cavity and lets sister stand over the chair and watch while he fills brother's tooth. Brother does try to torment sister quite a bit about how the dentist is going to "yank our her loose tooth," so she is somewhat timid to get into the chair. However, she does and while she is busy asking questions and looking at the dentist's "yanker," the dentist feels her tooth in a cloth, wiggles it around and out it comes! Sister had no idea it even happened! She's pretty excited and thrilled about all of it and was very glad that brother was wrong about the yanker! She gets a dime from the tooth fairy and was very excited!

This book does an excellent job in describing what happens when you go to the dentist. It's great for getting rid of those little jitters and it really is accurate. Great job and I highly recommend it!

Another great book!

I am a dentist and believe that this book has useful information for anyone interested in restoring and preserving their dental health. This book is aimed at the person who is apprehensive about going to the dentist. Based on the premise that most fear is of the unknown, Dr. Mac Lee, Joleen Jackson and Vicki Audette have written this book with the aim of demystifying dentistry.

Speaking personally, I know that sometimes I struggle to explain things that to me make perfect sense in a nontechnical, nonthreatening manner. This book does that.

It starts by discussing common reasons people are afraid to go to the dentist and tries to help get you past those fears. Whether you are afraid it'll hurt, or your embarassed for us to see your teeth, Dr. Lee gives tips on how to get past these feelings so that you can get the dental care you need.

The book goes on to describe various dental procedures, what is involved in them, and questions you should ask. I especially like the section on children's dental needs. It covers every age range and answers common questions about subjects such as baby teeth, braces, and broken teeth.

I can't tell you how strongly I feel that this is a great book for any dental consumer. I am ordering copies for several of my patients as well as copies to donate to our local library.

Tells it like it should be....

As a general dentist, I see many of my new patients struggling with the issues that are covered in "Nothin' Personal Doc, But I Hate Dentists!" Mac and Joleen have many combined years of experience in the dental field and they have taken this expertise and transformed it into "English" for the patient to be able to understand easily, instead of "Dental-ese" which we are often guilty of using when speaking to our patients.

This book allows patients to make informed choices and to give them an idea as to what they should ask their dentist during the visit. A well-educated, talented and confident dentist welcomes any patient questions. We know that the better informed our patients are, the better choices they can make for themselves regarding their dental health.

This book is a milestone in bridging the gap between dentists and their patients. I give it to all my new patients and encourage them to spread the word to everyone they know. Mac and Joleen have helped not only the general public, but also the dental community with the publication of their informative book. I recommend it for anyone who has a dental visit coming up, or if you are looking for a new dentist! (which, together, SHOULD make up 100% of the population)

I am a 2nd year Stomathological Medicine Ms. resident and have had this book from the beginning and must say it is a first class reference book.

Not only it is physically well done (thick glossy paper, full colored images and state of the art design), but it has a very complete content organized by clinical features, histopathological characteristics, treatment and prognosis and so on. It has also got an appendix with differential diagnosis.

To be an OMF Pathology work it has a very good OMF Medicine approach.

It is a must not only for undergraduate, but for postgraduates as well.

Chapters provide recommendations for a simple, daily antibacterial program to support the body's natural healing, an eight-point test to determine if one has gum disease, advice for preventing pregnancy gingivitis, straight talk on why brushing and flossing alone may not be enough, and much more. Pregnancy And Oral Health is a superbly presented and welcome supplement to pregnancy reference shelves, and especially recommended reading for expectant mothers everywhere.

I picked up this book at a local writer's conference. Being a single male, I'm not exactly in the book's target audience, but I like to support local authors. I was very pleasantly surprised. Pregnancy and Oral Health offers very useful information in an agreeable, often humerous style. It is not a fear mongering book, nor is is simply a list (ten things you can do to have better breath...). It is a complete work on oral health, and specifically its importance in pregnancy. It passed what I consider the ultimate test for a "self help" book - it convinced me to change my habits for the better. I'm buying a copy for every woman I know who is thinking about having children.

The link between oral health and pregnancy outcomes has become an important focus in the women's health community over the past decade. It is clear that poor oral hygiene and a lack of oral health may contribute to morbidity during the childbearing year. With her book, Pregnancy and Oral Health, Sheila Wolf offers those interested in optimizing their health a valuable tool. This book is accessible, informative and motivating and clearly outlines simple behaviors that will improve one's oral health. As a nurse-midwife serving women throughout their life span, I found this book's content as pertinent to providers of obstetric care as it is to our clients.

Book saved my gums, my teeth, and maybe even my life

Review Date: 2004-06-24
Mama Gums and her immensely readable book most certainly saved my gums, my teeth, and maybe even my life. This entertaining book and its essential oral-care techniques are for everyone -- men and women, boys and girls, pregnant and non-pregnant, and especially dental professionals (who need to read it the most).

Sheila's book has all the information your dental professionals should give you but don't. Believe me, I speak from experience! After years of conscientiously soliciting and scrupulously following the "brush, floss, and regular professional cleanings" advice of my general dentist and first periodontist, I was rewarded with war-zone style bleeding gums at every cleaning, deep periodontal pockets, receding gums, and significant bone loss. My first periodontist told me my only alternative was extensive gum surgery. The periodontist whose second opinion I sought wanted to do even more extensive gum surgery. Yikes, yikes, and double yikes! I was paralyzed with fear.

My friend introduced me to Sheila via telephone and loaned me a copy of her warm, witty, and scientifically sound but completely understandable book. I read Sheila's book cover to cover and immediately began following her oral-care regimen. I also ordered several more copies for my friends, my family, and myself.

This week, I had the best dental checkup of my life -- no bleeding, no tartar buildup, significantly reduced periodontal pockets, tight healthy gum tissue, and one very happy camper. Sheila's book and my willingness to follow it made all the difference, taking me from oral-health hell to oral-health heaven in less than six months.

You literally can't live without this book, so buy it, follow it, and enjoy the results. You, too, will thank Mama Gums.

Best dental kids dental book - Outstanding preparation for the first dentist visit

My son is 2 and LOVES this book - don't know why. Did I say LOVE? I should have said OBSESSED, really, really, absolutely OBSESSED with this book - he asked for it constantly, which is wonderful (I LOVE that he loves it) because we read it everyday several times a day in preparation for his first dental visit, and that visit went fantastically well. This book is made up of photos of Ashley and her mom with Barney going to the dentist, being in the waiting room, sitting in the chair, having an xray, getting her teeth cleaned, and then leaving. It shows some instruments, the metal explorer pick and the little mirror, and all of these photos are exactly what my son encountered at the dentist. Even details like the bid he wore at the dentist or the gloves and mask the dentist wore are shown in the book, so he totally was grooving to it all because he was proud that he could tell the dentist what the dentist was doing. We even took the book with us to the dentist and as he was put into the chair we showed the page in this Barney book and said "Look, just like Ashely, you get to sit in the special chair!". The visit went extremely well, and we emphasized the book even after the visit to reinforce the 'pleasentness' of dentist visits and prepare him for next time. I highly recommend this book and wish there were more like it out there. I think the reality photos are more helpful as tools rather than the drawings of bears going to dentists. I did just order the 'smile wide look inside' book by Dember-paige as it too is photographs.

This is a great book for your child to get to see the inside of the Dentist Office and not be afraid because Barney is there. Great tool for the teachers or Dental Professional to use to talk with small children for Childrens Dental Health Month. (Febuary)

An excellent book for a child's first visit to the dentist.

We high recommend this book for our young patients before their first visit to the dentist. Barney helps remove any fears a child may have regarding their first dental visit. This book contains many good pictures to help explain what will happen during the visit.

Great book for any Barney fan!

Even though the age for this book is from 4-8, my 2 year old loves it. She asks to read, "Barney Dentist" all of the time, even though she has about 15 other Barney books. I hope it will help her to not be afraid of the dentist when it comes her time to go.

This book is an invaluable addition to any dentist's library, who is looking to practise implantology. It contains extensive discussion on biomechanic that justify every step we do in the placement on implant supported-prostheses.

I have been a practicing dentist for 29 years and restoring implants since 1991. I am in the process of becoming board certified to now place my own fixtures. Misch does a fantastic job of bringing into view a number of treatment modalities and what the potential pitfalls can be if each particular step is not followed. Much better than the text book that the school is using. Anyone that is considering restoring and or placing fixtures and intends to get predictable esthetic and functional results needs to read this book.
