This is in the Medical Adviser Series, which are written bymedical professionals iwth non-professionals in mind! This book is a sound an dinformative guide to an understanding of sleep and some of the frequent disorders of sleep. It should go far to counteract many mistaken notions about sleep and insomnia in the mind of the public.

An Honest Look at Snoring

This was a very honest book about snoring and the problems it causes. I snore and I know I snore loud. Girlfriends, family, and roommates have suffered greatly as a result. I liked this book because the author was very honest about his snoring problem and the problems it creates for others. It is a short book and does not take long to read. I also enjoyed how the author fairly evaluated the many "so called" snoring treatments out there. Masks, surgery, nose strips, tennis balls, all "supposed" cures which did not work for the author or most snorers. Sadly the author had no answers to cure snoring and unfortunately that is the reality. However, kudos for the author for openly discussing a problem many of us suffer from but are embarrassed to talk about.

Most people who wrestle with getting to sleep on a regular basis are totally unaware that they are not really "insomniacs" at all! They just need to "adjust their internal clock." In Wide Awake at 3am, Dr Coleman brings real scientific research to bear on the twin problems of insomnia and sleep-deprivation. Bottom line... The book is extremely informative and entertaining. But the most thrilling part is this: 1)The descriptions of the problems caused by insomnia are exact, 2) the diagnoses put forth by Dr. Coleman make sense, and 3) the treatments proposed in the book really work! I would suggest this book to anyone who has problems with sleep or fatigue, even on an irregular basis.

After years of trying to get my son to sleep through the night and not liking Dr. Ferbers theories at all, I read this book and had my 5 year old sleeping through the night, in his own bed, in 2 weeks. This books breaks down the sleeping problems into several different chapters, With different methods for different children! This book gives helpful advise for bedtime and also gives advise on how your daytime attitudes are effecting sleeping habits. I recommend this book to anyone with an older child who doesn't sleep.

Truly useful "compass" for the insomniac

Review Date: 2008-10-06
This is a welcomed book for the insomniac, as well as for any one with an interest in sleep. I practiced "traditional" Sleep Medicine for 20 yrs (now retired), and recognize the need for more options to help people sleep. Inspite of knowing little about Zen, I found this book was quite readable and easy to follow.
The author suffered with insomnia for years, and pursued the traditional modalities and approaches with little success. He then took "up Zen" and found it useful in resolving his insomnia! Although the mention in the book that thinking itself interferes with sleep is well known, most of the approach to sleep and sleeplessness discussed is not something found in the Western-tradional Sleep Medicine or psychology literature. "A Zen approach is about experiencing reality free from any distortions," "Zen is about removing all manner of interpretation in order to replace concepts with direct experience" and finally, "there is no right way: there is only how things are, which can rarely if ever be captured by a set of beliefs" sums up the points Mr. Chiles makes that I found most useful in differentiating his approach to the techniques I practiced for years with varying success (cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, relaxation methods). It would be confusing, and a disservice for me to try and further discuss what I "learned" from this book. Suffice to say that I have actually followed what is suggested and found it simple, highly useful, and effective, in helping with my occasssioanl bad night of sleep! Also, I would highly recommend this book to my patients if I were still practicing Sleep Medicine.
"Zen and the Art of Sleep is like a compass" (pg 20), I agree; this book is a very useful guide to help everyone sleep well.

I was almost crazy when by chance or destiny I found this book on Amazon. I knew in my heart I could not let my baby cry-it-out. Yet, I was finding no alternatives and was really frustrated not being able to sleep at all. This book showed me the way to greatly improve my child's sleep while making her feel safe and loved. I am very thankful to Elizabeth Pantley for taking the time to share this so important knowledge. If you don't beleive in letting your baby cry - this book is essential for you.

Not the most realistic.

I was hopeful that this approach was going to work for our little one. She had colic for the first 3.5 months and cried a lot. Therefore i was looking for a sleep approach that didn't require additional crying. We didn't start any real sleep "training" until 4 months. And bottomline... we have come to the conclusion, some crying must occur. I know that ALL babies are different, but this approach was not the one for us.

At last someone knows how!

Great buy! This book was written by someone who has experienced sleepless night and knows what she is talking about. This is not some doctor behind a desk writing a book. This is a mother. I dont believe in crying it out. I feel its inhumane, however each to their own.The book is easy to understand and there are step by step instructions including a log sheet to see the sleeping improve.I am still in the process of following this book but I really enjoyed reading it.I have many many baby sleeping books. I actually think I have most of the sleeping books and if I knew about this book earlier,I would not have wasted so much money on all the others. If there is a baby sleeping book out there to buy....This is it!

I'm not a mother who could let my daughter cry. Everyone told me my sleep problems were a result of "giving in to easily." Then I found this wonderful book. Finally, someone who understands the ache in a mother's heart when her baby is crying. This book will not dissappoint. You have to work at it, but isn't that what being a parent is all about?
My daughter is now sleeping almost through the night. I'm a happier mother and that makes everyone happy.

Some great advice but.............

God bless you all for whom this book helped but it just didn't do the trick for us. I must admit that there is some great general advice in there but when I got this book I was desperate and needed help immediately, not a month to 3 months down the road. Ms. Pantley's advice is definitely gentle but very, very time consuming. She even says that it may take 30-120 days to work. Well, how much of that is the techniques or is the child just more developmentally ready to sleep better? If you have lots of time and are not at the end of your rope then give this a try but if you are desperate like I was then I don't think you should waste your time with this.
A little background: I am a stay-at-home mom and spent most days home alone with my baby. I ended up holding my child for every nap and co-slept with her as well. In addition, I nursed her to sleep every time. At this point my child never slept more than 3 hours at a time and usually only 1-2 hours........ for 5 months!!! The moment I put her down she'd scream so I just continued to hold her. I was so sleep deprived that I was going nutty. I knew I had to do something and I got this book b/c the thought of letting my baby "cry it out" absolutely broke my heart.
Well, I tried Ms. Pantley's advice for 2 weeks and I was seeing very, very little progress. I then decided that I just needed to bite the bullet and get the other popular books that were a little more "strong armed" and see if any of them seemed more practical. I gravitated toward those that were written by experts (and MD and PhD who actually work in the area of child sleep disorders), those being Dr. Ferber and Mindell. After reading both, I realized that the "cry it out" method isn't as cruel as it sounds and it was what I had to try. (In fact, I think Ferber's term "progressive waiting" more aptly describes the technique.) Well, I'm here to tell you that it worked just like they say- by day 3 it was drastically better! The most she ever cried was 45 minutes and that was not the screaming banshee I was afraid she'd be. After 2 nights she was pretty consistenly sleeping 8-9 hours straight.
I think that those of you who are at the end of your rope like I was really need to bypass this book and give the "progressive waiting" aka "cry it out" method a try. If it gets too bad, then stop, but give it a try at least. It was the best thing I did for my baby and me.

Very loving method of helping newborns adjust to the world

The program Dr. Karp presents in this book was a lifesaver during the first three months of my daughter's life. We didn't follow his plan down to the letter (and Dr. Karp says it is adaptable for each baby's needs) because my daughter hated having her arms swaddled in, so we swaddled her arms-out and it worked like a charm. She started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, and the four "S's" worked incredibly well when she needed help calming down. I really appreciated the fact that this plan helped us help her adjust to the world during her "fourth trimester" in a loving and comfortable way. People now tell me that they have never seen a happier, more content child than my little girl!

This book is excellent. Dr Karp not only teaches you the techniques to help your infant cry less and be happier, but he also explains the theory & why it works. In addition, he goes into other theories of colic, and explanations about them. As a pediatrician, I found this fascinating and very useful. I highly recomend this book to toher parents and especially other health professionals. My mother, a pediatric rheumatologist, has worked with Dr Karp since he was a resident, and has seen his theories work for years in many children.

The second half of this book has really practical, proven-by-experience advice (five basic strategies for keeping a baby peaceful) for anyone with a newborn baby. The first half, on the other hand, is almost laughable. My recommendation to my daughter was to soak up part two of the book and ignore the first half in the interest of saving time.

It's a life saver of a book, really.

We had a fussy baby, we thought it might be colic cause it only happened at night. Except after learning about colic, it really didnt fit or aleast it was only mild case/signs of being colic. Which actually defies the definition of colic., I was looking around doing research on how to calm our fussy baby and came across this book a few times. I read the reviews and noticed someone summed it up for you. I took that to heart and didnt buy the book thinking I had the just of it. However my attempts to calm baby were only half successful. Ironically enough a few days later my wife had meet with a friend who owned this book and let her borrow it.

I read through it tonight when baby got fussy and I'm so glad it made it's way into our lives. It really is a life savor and you cant really sum up this book by just saying use the 5 S's and what they are if you really want to get it right. There really was a good bit more detail in it this and for such a great price, it's wisdom cant be beat. If you have a fussy baby and your almost at your wits end, you really gotta read/get this book.

Ok - I haven't read the whole book yet, but skipping to Chapter 2 it says that you can start this method as soon as your child is 4months old!!! Hello - why does the title have in it from 'birth to 5 years'. Right now I am completely sleep deprived with a one month old, looking for solutions, and relize that I was dupped into buying this book.

Some great ideas!

I ordered this book out of pure desperation over my 4 month old would not sleep and had to be constantly held, rocked, nursed (we did it all!) to fall asleep. What I have taken from this book: My son now takes 3-4 naps a day that last about an hour. The length should improve as he gets older. The first night was the hardest but after crying for 30 minutes (with several check ins) he fell asleep. Ever since he has been able to fall asleep when I put him down with very little fuss or none at all. It's been less than two weeks since I started the program but I have seen great improvement! I now also have
a set schedule of bathing, pjs and nursing before I put my baby down at 7pm every night. It's wonderful because it really frees up my evening.

Unfortunately my baby still wakes up 3-4 times a night and doesn't sleep longer than 3 hours straight. The book recommends weaning night feedings by eliminating the length of the feeding by two minutes each night. I tried it for a few days but was too exhausted (and couldn't stand hearing my baby cry!) so I stopped. I will make an attempt to wean one feed at a time in a few months when I feel my baby is able to go through the night without eating. Honestly, I would be happy with at least 6 hours of straight sleep, let alone 12!

It is the first baby book that I purchased and I'm glad I did. It is still a CIO method though but I have adjusted that to our needs and feel comfortable with letting my baby "fuss" when I want him to go back to sleep or fall asleep.

I will update soon with progress. Good luck sleepy parents!

My 3 month old has never napped by himself, since day one he would wake up if you put him down. So this was a vicious cycle that just continued on for months, getting worse. He would only nap if he rocked, and then he would only sometimes stay asleep for 30 minutes. This book is the "gentle" cry it out method. Simple as that. There are a few basic ideas that they set you up with (darkening the room, white noise machine), but the program consists of putting your child down for sleep, if he/she fusses check in on them in 5 minutes, talk to them (don't touch them) and then leave the room. If they are still fussing within 10 minutes, do the same thing. THIS PROGRAM IS VERY DO-ABLE! I struggled emotionally with letting my son cry, but I know, after 6 days, he is falling asleep on his own within 10 minutes and sleeping for at least 40 minutes at the minimum.

Sleep Problems Solved!

This book solved our 5 month old baby's napping problems. Until we read this book, we could not get our baby to take naps of more than 20 to 30 minutes. She slept fairly well at night with one feeding at around 3 a.m., but she simply was not getting enough total sleep. This book helped tremendously by teaching us WHEN to put the baby down for sleep. It did take some crying, but I truly believe it was okay, because the baby now likes going in for naps and going to bed. She goes to bed at night without a peep, and she only mildly protests for a few mintues before her naps. Her naps now last 1-2 hours and she takes at least 2 per day. Sometimes she even goes down for naps without so much as a whimper. She is now getting all the sleep she needs -- 11 hours per night with no breaks, and 2-3 hours per day of napping. What a relief! The doctor will be happy and we are definitely happy at home. The baby is peacefully napping as I write this review.

At 5 months my son would only fall asleep in our bed, with pacifier in his mouth and me holding his hand. Then he was up every hour and half to nurse. I was so sleep deprived I could barely do anything around the house, so my friend gave me this book. At 5 month and two weeks my son was sleeping through the night, falling asleep by himself, in his crib and without pacifier!!!!! He never cried for more than 5 minutes when we were teaching him!!!!!!!!!! I am soooooo happy this book exists!!!!!!!!!!!

There's some excellent advice in this book and I recommend it with one caveat: the sections on the early months were incredibly frustrating. They didn't address a common difficulty with infants under 12 weeks -- namely, that many want to be held ALL THE TIME and won't nap unless they're in your arms or otherwise next to your body. The suggestions West has for this age (putting the infant down drowsy but awake) simply won't work for a good number of babies until they've had a bit more time to mature. Parents facing this difficulty should just wait a bit and keep trying. It would have saved me a lot of headaches and worry if I had known...

I am so glad that I found this book. This is a great book for any parent to read, whether or not you actually use every piece of advice. I have read The No-Cry Sleep Solution previously, but it didn't really work for our family. I also did not believe in the Cry It Out method, which certainly didn't work for my daughter. This is a great mix of the two. West gives very commonsense advice for sleep problems, in a very easy-to-read manner. My favorite piece of advice was that if your child uses a pacifier and wakes up hunting for it, hand them the binky instead of putting it in for them. That way they learn to do it on their own (something that I should have thought of on my own!) This book is just what sleep-deprived parents need, especially if you are okay with just a little crying for everyone's better sleep habits.

This is the best book for infant sleep I received. It's a common sense approach to helping your child sleep through the night and establish good sleep habits. Not only does it tell you how to help shape your child's sleep it also tells you why it works. Another nice part of the book is it will tell you by age how much an average child sleeps and how much is at night and in naps. I love this book so much I won't loan it to anyone for fear of not getting it back. Instead, I give it as a baby gift to every new mother I know. I have even given it to 2nd time mothers if they didn't have a copy before. Excellent book!!!
