This issue of Neurologic Clinics presents an in-depth perspective on the history, diagnoses, and current treatments for sleep disorders. The contributors are all highly regarded specialists in this field and the editor has done a superb job in organizing this publication. I have found it to be invaluable and recommend it to anyone involved with or affected by sleep disorders.

Excellent presentation of sleep medicine

Review Date: 2007-07-26
This British text serves as an excellent overview of sleep disorders medicine. In a recent published review I commented that this could be considered one of the best texts available for individuals with limited training and experience in working with patients suffering from sleep disorders. This book is especially recommended for psychologists and other health care professionals due to its straightforward presentation, and balanced coverage of conditions. Fortunately this single authored text does not overwhelm the reader - it uses references sources appropriately. This is one book that belongs on the bookshelves of practitioners who do not routinely evaluate people with chronic slep disorders.

Finally: Something besides "Sleep Hygiene" "Cures"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-23
I was having a terrible time with insomnia in 1994/5. I read every article I could find, and several books. All suggested about the same "sleep hygiene" methods of sleeping better. Finally I found this book which discussed better attitudes towards sleep, and what worked for me...temporary sleep depriviation, and I haven't had much of a problem since. I've recommended it to others, and most of them were helped too.

Sleeping Well is a comprehensive resource book on sleep and sleep disorders. It is an invaluable tool to have on hand in professional settings such as hospitals, doctor's offices and sleep centers. Surprisingly, due to it's easy conversational style, it is equally valuable in the home.
As a professional, I use this thoroughly researched book, (with its convenient A-Z section for quick reference) to learn about disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, insomnia and restless legs syndrome, to mention just a few!
As a layperson it answers my everyday questions such as "Why does my 80 year old father sleep so poorly?" "Why can't I function after losing a night's sleep?" "Is it possible to "make up" that lost sleep?" "What effect does shift work have on my policeman husband and what are possible solutions?" "How can I help my teenager get the sleep she needs and how much does she really need?" "Can my salesman brother minimize the effects of jet lag?"
From bed wetting to sleep walking, from REM sleep to snoring, this book contains so much information and advice on what we spend a major part of our lives doing, that I, for one, don't know how I ever got along without it! It's reassuring to know I'm never going to be without it again. I highly recommend this book!

I used this book for a report on the effects of sleeplessness on the waking person. Instead of just skimming it, I ended up reading it cover-to-cover, and not only is it informative but it also doubles as a self-help book! Wonderful read for the weary.

Excellent short book addressing sleep research pre-1980
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-08
This is an excellent book that sleep researchers, clinicians, health care professionals and the public can rely upon to learn about earlier times in sleep research and sleep medicine. It is written in a very engaging format, provides enough detail about "the basics" (for its time) and Dr. Dement shares many interesting stories about earlier projects. A very delightful short read which ought to remain part of the important history of sleep medicine. Thumbs up!

This is in the Medical Adviser Series, which are written bymedical professionals iwth non-professionals in mind! This book is a sound an dinformative guide to an understanding of sleep and some of the frequent disorders of sleep. It should go far to counteract many mistaken notions about sleep and insomnia in the mind of the public.
