I enjoyed this book. It gets straight to the point, instead of leading up to the lead up...
The book is a soft cover that has held up for many years. The pictures are gorgeous, and the charts are very easy to understand, as well as the illustrations. Most of the plants you can find just about anywhere and do not require too much attention.

This would be a great house-warming gift, along with a nicely potted plant.

One of the most amazing books ever

I can't believe there isn't more information out there about how plants can make your home so much healthier. My daughter has allergies and we've been doing construction in our house for a few years so this book is a godsend. I have recommended it to many friends. The book is so well laid out and so informative, a very useful manual. I have purchased so many plants since I read the book and I really love the way they look in my house. Plants are much cheaper than air filters and much nicer to look at! I honestly cannot say enough good things about this book. A great gift for new mothers and anyone doing construction or anyone interested in the environment and health issues in general.

Great!!!

Up front, there's only one reason the book didn't get 5 stars - the book only covers a limited amount of plants, but that is because the author (Dr. Wolverton) apparently only studied a certain number of plants while he worked with NASA on this study. For the plants covered in the book, it is an excellent resource and does give enough information and plant variety to suit basic needs.

I encourage the author to conduct a follow-up study/book that broadens out to cover more plants and get the public even more informed for the long term.

Highly recommend purchasing this book for better knowledge on how to clean up the air in your office, home or other enclosed space. I especially found it interesting to see that certain chemicals such as those released from photocopiers are also able to be "consumed" by certain plants.

My sister got this for me as a birthday gift and boy am I glad she did! I actually enjoyed reading the background research and was surprised some of the data is decades old and yet most of us know nothing about the science behind the concept that plants are good for indoor environments. I liked the detailed info on each of the 50 listed plants...esp which ones release oxygen at night and are therefore better for bedrooms. Now I just need another one that lists more than 50 ;-)

I have been suffering for about (5) years now. After loosing my Marriage, jobs (due to sickness) and countless visits to the Doctors I FINALLY found an answer. This book has made me realize that I need to not be in denial anymore and to know that this is not my fault. I suffer from the (2) sinus surgeries I had back in 2000 and 2001. I am allergic to Pollen, Trees, and Animal dander enormously. I am disabled. I am more sick than not. I am still raising my (3) teenagers and have a wonderful man in my life who supports me. I am now on unemployment again and am afraid to go back to work. I am tired of faking that I am OK. I don't get enough air to my brain it feels like and I am tired a lot of the time. I found this book to be so helpful in just that I have someone that is going through the same thing as I. I have found myself in a great depression lately and this was a God send. I would rather have my leg cut off than to live like this. I have faith though. I pray that this book helps others as it has helped me. I wish I would have been told about the side effects of sinus surgery but I did not. Read this book!

This is undoubtly one of the most important issues facing the medical community today. The impact of this book is already far reaching and I am confident we will soon see a real turn-around in the ENT community in regards to these issue.
Point of fact: I just spoke to an Australian ENT, returned from training with the ex-president of the US Facial and Cosmetic Surgery Association who now agrees with the basic principals behind this book and "would not perform a partial inferior turbinate resection on a member of my family." And I was about to let my regular ENT perfom an 80% resection!... until I saw this book.
Get that. There's no denying this. It's real, and I pray for all the poor souls who will be inadvertantly butchered between now and when the new standard finally filters down into the offices of ENTs the world over.
Good luck Chris, and keep up the good work. Don't worry, by 2030 you'll probably have a bionic nose that can shoot lasers so you can go around zapping irresponsible ENTs.
They will call you: The Turbinator.

If you are considering any sort of nasal/sinus surgery, you owe it to yourself to read this book first. I don't think there is much general awareness on turbinates and the important functions they provide, which is why many (including myself) get talked into over-aggressive turbinate reductions.

In this book, Chris does an excellent job of covering what your turbinates do, the problems he has experienced, ways to cope, surgical techniques to consider, home remedies and more. I think it should be required reading for all ENT's and Plastic Surgeons that perform turbinectomies.

Aside from the medical information, the book is also well written, and Chris's story is inspirational. Again, I would highly recommend reading this book before considering any nasal surgeries.

Excellent Book!

This is a must read for anyone that has had or is considering sinus surgery!
If it has been suggested to you that sinus surgery can correct your problems you absolutely need to read this book and do your research! Complications to sinus surgery can be life-altering and the damage permanent. As a victim of aggressive sinus surgery I can attest that these symptoms are very much real and can alter your reality in ways that I never imagined. I believe a great many ENT's do not fully understand the extreme importance the nose and sinuses play in the quality of life. With good intentions they can often remove too much tissue and bone in effect leaving the nose with the inability to function normally with regards to nasal cycles, moisture control, airflow and the health of the lungs. Chris does a wonderful job in explaining the importance of a healthy nose and sinus and the roles each structure plays in nasal health. If you do not know what a Turbinate is or what it does READ THIS BOOK!

Chris has put alot of time and effort in detailing everything a sinus suffer should consider before having surgery. Thankfully the ENT field is slowly beginning to understand that a very conservative approach should be applied when doing surgery. Chris explains each option a patient should discuss with the doctor performing the surgery. Each method is reviewed and rated for the possible outcomes and the conservation of important nasal tissue and structures.

If you have had sinus surgery done and are having problems Chris has outlined things you can do to help relieve some of the symptoms. For those having ENS type symptoms there are things you can do to help improve your sinus health. Chris describes things that he has personally tried that work and what others have used to find relief. Those that suffer from ENS type symptoms can find some comfort in the new methods Chris discusses in his book, to help rebuild important turbinate structures that have been removed in previous surgeries. Chris has first hand knowledge of how Alloderm implants may help improve the quality of life of ENS patients. With research into stem cell therapy and tissue regeneration the future is brighter. The important point that Chris makes is that ENS can be prevented if a conservative approach is used. Once removed, turbinates do not grow back. Conservation of nasal tissue is essential!

I can't recommend this book enough. I think it should be required reading for all those practicing ENT's that perform sinus surgery. Anyone suffering from sinus problems can find solutions that may make surgery unnecessary. Those that have had surgery and find their problems even worse than before surgery can also benefit from therapies and techniques Chris has outlined in the book. If you are considering having sinus surgery and have spoken to others around you that have had surgery it's important that you ask what was actually performed. Chances are they can't go any further than to say hey had a deviated septum corrected. It's of utmost importance that you go into surgery knowing EXACTLY what will be preformed and by what method. I went in for deviated septum and came out with an EMPTY NOSE!

Bravo to Christopher Martin for bringing the devastating problem upfront for discussion and sharing his personal story so that we can learn and hopefully prevent this devastating problem.

I truly wish that this book had been available prior to my nasal surgeries. I did research, but nothing that would have prepared and informed me like Chris Martin's book. It is very detailed and heartfelt. For those who have already rolled the dice and lost with a nasal surgery, this book offers hope, support and many helpful suggestions. ENS is real! Even with a "conservative" surgery, it is still possible to experience a myriad of debilitating symptoms. Doctors are often dismissive and unhelpful. Hopefully this book will begin to turn that tide.

This book has excellent information for anyone who is just diagnosed with asthma. If you have been living with asthma for awhile and have been active in the management of your asthma, you may find that there is very little "new" information contained in the book. You will find that the book contains a good description of the various treatments that may be prescribed by your doctor. Be that as it may, the book continues to be a good resource for anyone with asthma.

After a diagnosis of COPD and/or asthma, I did what I always do. I set out to learn as much as possible. This is a wonderful, comprehensive and hopeful book. I have checked much of the info with my pulmonary MD and he too was most impressed and is suggesting it to patients. It is written in understandable terms, with a fine resources section. I learned a lot, and felt a bit more in control of this disease. Because if you give in, it will "git ya". Well done!

I have sinusitis and asthma, and my children have the same. We have suffered for too many years according to this book. It enlightened me to learn that my sinus drainage actually triggers asthma--thus, I have learned to stay on top of sinus infections and post nasal drip--to END ASTHMA. It works. Dr. Smolley is brilliant. The book is a must read for any parent or person with allergies, asthma, sinusitis or other lung disease. Read it--and do what he says--it will change your life the way it has ours.

Simple and Easy just Ain't the Same Thing!

Review Date: 2008-11-25
Tom, and his words, have always been an inspiration to me. Who wouldn't sign up for what this book offers to deliver?

I loved this book. It won't win any awards for literature, but the parable is engaging enough to keep you reading to learn how things turn out with Angus, and it's a tremendous vehicle to delivering some of Tom's best stuff in so very few pages. There's tons of good to take away from this, things we can all put into practice every day, and if it lights a fire under you, it serves as a great jumping board to learn more about centering, purpose, conflict, and more from his other two books. The Magic of Conflict: Turning a Life of Work into a Work of Art goes into great detail about how these techniques can be applied to manage conflict constructively in our lives, and Journey to Center: Lessons in Unifying Body, Mind, and Spirit uses stories to reflect on the concept of center and how it permeates our entire lives.

The solution is that simple (just breathe!), but that doesn't imply that it is easy. Letting go of all of our garbage and becoming centered is major work, something to work at every day, all day, for our entire lives. At the same time, using our breathing (which, hey, we gotta do anyway!) as a trigger or reminder to take just a few seconds - right now - to practice that crucial life's work, is all that it takes to help us move along our own path toward becoming the selves we all want to be.

(If you really want to experience something amazing, check out one of his seminars. I promise you, they are like nothing else you've ever encountered!)

This is a great story! Using a parable-like format, Tom Crum has identified "every person's" delimma...finding balance in a world that seems to be spinning out of control. We often look for solutions outside ourselves, while Tom reminds us that the real answer to our time-challenged life resides within us. Our task is to delve inward to determine what is of greatest value. The three deep breath concept is a simple, yet powerful tool that helps the mind and spirit settle down. In doing so, we are able to clear the clutter, see our best self emerge, and focus on possibilites that are aligned with our intrinsic needs and lifelong desires. Give the book (and the breaths) a chance. You'll be glad you did -- and so will the people you live and work with.

With stress levels at an epidemic high and businesses shelling out more than $300 billion a year, businessman/corporate speaker/marshal arts expert Thomas Crum offers a technique for coping with anxiety. Breathing, to be exact.

Written with very simplistic prose as a parable about a businessman who learns Crum's breathing system and thus changes his entire life, this new age tome supposedly teaches people how to achieve a "centered state" using three simple breaths. It's earnest, but naive. If only life's problems were so easily solved! Unfortunately, this book reads far too much like an infomercial to have broad appeal.

This is an outstanding book! The story helps the reader to see the benefits of adopting the Three Deep Breaths as part of their daily regimen. As for me, I have begun using the technique described in the book to improve my ability to focus during bowling events. The results have been fantastic; I have won a tournament and placed second in another by using the three breaths to reduce stress and stay focused on my goal. I bowled my first 279 during a qualifying event because of the second breath. I look forward to my first 300 and am confident that the Three Deep Breaths will be a factor in that accomplishment.

Inmates and staff at Pleasant Valley State Prison need this book

Review Date: 2009-04-29
I am a former prison chaplain who worked at Pleasant Valley State Prison (PVSP) outside of Coalinga, California (which is about 60 miles SW of Fresno) in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. I worked at PVSP from 2002-2005, and got out just before an epidemic of VF cases hit the prison. The epidemic has been attributed to the construction of Coalinga State Hospital, which was built nearby.

I recently sent a copy of THE VALLEY FEVER EPIDEMIC to an inmate with whom I have been corresponding. He has a very serious case of VF and many other inmates do too. They are finding the book to be extremely helpful, because prison doctors are telling inmates with VF that the symptoms they are complaining about, such as rashes, are due to an allergic reaction to peanut butter, milk, or to a certain type of soap. Or they are being told they have the flu.

Due to medical staff ignorance or incompetency (some would suggest corruption in an attempt to delay the expense of VF medication for as long as possible), it is not uncommon for inmates to suffer for more than a year before an accurate diagnosis is made. Both staff and inmates are coming down with this dreaded disease, and some are dying. All are in need of accurate information, which this book provides.

It is my hope that more friends and family members of inmates, as well as correctional staff, in endemic regions of Southwestern states will discover this book and purchase it for their loved ones. The inmate I sent a copy to has other inmates and even correctional staff asking him about the book. In fact, he now seems to know more about VF than many of the medical staff.

Valley Fever Epidemic is very informatitive about this disease. Most doctors do not know what Valley Fever is or how to treat it and the lingering after affects it produces for your WHOLE LIFETIME. By being informed with the research in this book you can manage your condition and realize symptoms you have are definitely related to contracting Valley Fever. Knowledge is power -- and this book gives you the knowledge about a disease that is swept under the table by the states where it is prevalent. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO HAS LINGERING SYMPTOMS THAT CAN'T BE DISAGNOSED OR CURED -- AS YOU MAY HAVE VALLEY FEVER AND NOT KNOW IT !!! (Especially read it before you travel out West.)
California and Nevada do not want anyone to know about this awful disease because it would hurt their tourist trade. California restaurants have warnings about drinking from lead crystal as it could harm the brain, but there is nothing warning about the air you breathe could contain fungus from the dust and dirt causing possible death or disability.
THIS BOOK IS THE ONLY SOURCE GIVING THE TRUE STORY AND WARNING PEOPLE ABOUT THE DANGERS OF CONTRACTING VALLEY FEVER and how to get treatment.

I am the mother of a Valley Fever survivor still battling the condition after 8 years.

The CDC is concerned about 20 cases of Swine Flu in the U.S. right now, but totally ignores the staggering number of people getting Valley Fever each year causing death or disability. There is definitely something wrong here. Valley Fever fungus is on the same scale as anthrax and is a very serious threat. Be informed !!! Read this book - your eyes will be opened.

To this day I still suffer from side effects that debilitate my life. I am so grateful to have found the book Valley Fever Epidemic. I feel as though it has in a way saved my life. All my questions are answered in this book. I have a clear understanding of the disease now, and I now feel confident that I can go to my doctors and be my own advocate. The material covered in this book clearly indicates the most updated truth and facts of Valley Fever. I am so thankful that the authors, doctors and survivors whom put so much time and effort into this book, have such caring and passion for the truth and facts to be told to every person that shares in breathing the air.

Thank you for helping in saving my life.

My wife read this book first and urged me to do so. I'm glad I did. As a non scientist, I found Greenfeld's writing and analysis very understandable and riveting. From patient zero, a chop shop employee in one of Hong Kong's teeming "Wild Flavor" eateries, to the pursuit of patients in the steppe of China's rural areas, he has put together a concise and chilling treatise on how fragile life in this world can be, and make you wonder when another killer virus will emerge. I recommend this book to every infectious disease specialist out there and any lay person who wants a great summary on the killers that are waiting for their genetic lottery tickets to get punched.

Karl Taro Greenfeld (KTG) in his book follows the SARS virus from its early beginnings in Guangdong Province (China) in late 2002 right to its end during 2003. He starts off with the rumours flying around Guangdong in late 2002 and then follows the virus around to wherever it goes. He also covers the science effort to identify it and the efforts to contain it.

KTG calls SARS the first pandemic of the 21st century. Perhaps it should be called the first pandemic which didn't happen. The figures of infected people and casualties he quotes at the beginning of each chapter are an approximation only as KTG admits at the end of the book and I can well believe that because when you read about the virus's impact on China you would think that the casualty figures should be higher.

China comes out badly in all this. As official policy dictates that the virus does not exist, it does not exist and therefore it spreads virtually unhindered until official policy changes, which eventually it did. But guess how many lives could have been saved if official policy had changed faster or if it hadn't been formulated in the first place. When you read KTG's bit on how China works you can see that it will happen again. That's the terrifying bit I took home from reading this book. Imagine a virus that outpaces the speed at which bureaucracy moves. We could be all dead by the time they make up their minds.

I consider myself blessed to have found this wonderful book. The Dr is a true humanitarian to write so candidly about CAID and how other doctors should be approaching your pain and chronic illness. I'm going to personally thank him by email and follow his recommendations. If his suggestions don't work then I'm going to make an appt to see him at his place of work. Most doctors are not doing their job out there and they are not taking the ethical stand to do no harm to the patient. There are a lot of reasons why this is so but with out getting into too much, if you find a good one then you don't want to let him go. I praise this Dr for writing this book for all of us sinus sufferers and plan on recommending it to everyone that I know. Highly recommended. He really wants you to get better.

This is a life altering read about one of the most common and baffling problems. Dr. Josephson's approach to sinus relief is both new and innovative and gives the reader both hope and relief. The answers are so simple when put into use everyday.

After following Dr. Josephson's program and suggestions, my sinus problems improved significantly and I enjoy a new found breath of fresh air! Highly recommended it to my family and friends.

This book is very informative, but a lot of the book deals with how the sinuses work, and how they are subject to irritation. While this is not bad information, it is dealt with too often. I basically wanted this book for relief of my problems, and in that respect, it is quite thorough. However, just skim through the first few chapters to get ideas about correcting your sinus problems.

This book is approachable by a layperson and which covers most of what a sinus sufferer should know before seeking treatment. It provides a good overview of the anatomy, a brief description of surgical evaluation and intervention, and detailed descriptions of medications and recommended lifestyle adjustments

I'm a patient of Dr. Josephson and he strongly encourages patients to read this book so I read it. Before reading my review, I recommend you first read the best review I could find, written by Walt Ballenberger who is founder of PostNasalDrip, "a resource web site for sinusitis sufferers like himself". You can find the review at the following links: [..] Ballenberger's review identified a number of questions which were unanswered in his book. By talking with Josephson in person, I was able to get answers for some of them.

LASER
The book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of laser vs. traditional cutting instruments. Before Josephson, I saw an ENT who recommended laser to lightly cauterize the turbinates in order to reduce their tendency to swell when inflamed (the scarification reduces the membrane's elasticity). Dr Josephson is not a proponent of laser except in certain cases. Although a laser is self-cauterizing and therefore reduces bleeding, it causes heat damage to surrounding tissue (more than the damage caused by a cutting instrument) and instrument setup adds time/cost to the procedure. Only where the decrease in bleeding outweighs these costs is use of a laser justified (e.g. when the patient has many small polyps). I didn't ask him but I'd imagine that the thermal heat injury would likely cause more damage to mucus-producing goblet cells and mucus-transporting cilia cells than cutting tools.

SINUPLASTY
This book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of sinuplasty® vs. traditional cutting instruments. Sinuplasty® is a proprietary tool made by Acclarent which uses a thin balloon similar to an angioplasty balloon to open the sinus passages. As in heart vessels, the balloon is placed into position and inflated, then deflated and removed. According to Acclarent's description, this results in permanent widening of the critical areas leading into the sinuses while leaving the nose lining unharmed rather than destructing this lining as occurs in typical sinus surgery. I would have to imagine that if the pressure applied expands bone than it certainly will crush the membranes and must do some damage to them and the cilia which are so necessary to remove the infection and mucus (mucociliary clearance) which is the whole basis by which the sinuses protect you. When I asked Dr. Josephson about what the pressure does to the membranes he said that he knew of no studies that showed what the effect of the balloons on the membranes and cilia were. It turns out that Dr. Josephson is trained in sinuplasty but relies almost exclusively on FESS (endoscopic cutting instruments, as described in his book). He pointed out that unlike angioplasty, which operates on only soft tissue and requires a stent to hold open the expanded tissue, sinuplasty expands a passageway or sinus by dilating bony openings and pathways--widening one passageway by crushing an adjacent sinus cavity. He speculates that such pressure fractured cells could result in a problem later such as mucocele formation--the procedure was too recently developed and long term studies were not available. In addition, while sinuplasty can open up a closed frontal, maxillary, or sphenoid sinus, it cannot open up the labyrinth of the ethmoid sinus. If the ethmoids are closed, functional FESS may be required in conjunction.

FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY (FESS)
Josephson doesn't much describe his surgical techniques in this book, which makes it difficult to compare FESS with alternative approaches. Dr Josephson says Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) uses microcutting instruments to remove bony partitions and to widen openings into the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinus when necessary. I asked how he expands the passages to closed sinus cavities. He explained that, in my case, he would remove the wall between the passage to a frontal sinus and an adjacent ethmoid sinus cell (rather than crushing the ethmoid cell as in sinuplasty). This would be more controlled than expanding a balloon (as in sinuplasty) and avoid creating a new closed cell which could become a cyst. While FESS changes the connectivity of the cavities, it avoids potentially closing off the adjacent cells. He claims that research shows that mucus transport from the now-opened frontal sinus to the ostiomeatal complex is preserved with this method. This book should include and expand on these descriptions. I also asked in what cases the membranes grow back which seems important when polyps are removed from sinus cells, leaving bare bone walls. He replied that they quickly grow back. This book should include pointers to research validating this claim.

SINUS ANATOMY
This book describes the sinuses as cavities which clean and humidify inhaled air. However, the diagrams show the sinuses as dead-end spaces off the primary airway connected only by tiny passages. Why does air travel through them except a small amt via turbulence? Although I suspect they do indeed clean and humidify inhaled air, it would be helpful to me if the book resolved this seeming contradiction.

CAT SCANS
The book includes a series of diagrams showing an idealized representation of the sinuses and other organs. I found it very difficult to relate my CT scans to these idealized diagrams even though I'm quite good at 3D visualization. It would be helpful if this book included a link to an online series of example CAT scans with annotation explaining what's what, how the structures relate to disease symptoms, and (assuming some patents get post-operative CT scans) what the structures look like after surgery. Josephson told me that he had a CT review in a draft of the book and Penguin Publishers needed to make the book shorter and insisted that he cut it out. Eventually he plans to put it on line.

Overall, an excellent book and highly recommended.

Sinus Relief mow is the most comprehensive book i have read on the subject. It is the first book that links Sinus Problems,Allergies,ASTHMA,SLeep Apnea, and Gerd (gastroesophageal reflux) i suffer from most of these problems and have been treated for years by many different physicians. And no one has made these connections which Dr Jordan S Josephson makes. He is brilliant and i am living what he describes. I am using his book asc a feference and have been following his five step program. I am already seeing a difference. I like the fact that DR Josephson combines the best from traditional and alternative medicine to bring relief for these problems If you suffer from any of these problems this book would be the best investment that you can make. It has many tips that woll help you with your problems. I am going to actually make an appointment to see DR Josephson. I like the wat he thinks. It makes sense.

I used this book to study for NRP, and reading through it and doing the tests definitely prepared me for the class. Others I know used the disc to study and liked it as well. It's nice that there are 2 different types of study tools for people since not everyone learns the same way.

Best CF Book Ever

My daughter was diagnosed in 1997 at 1 month of age. Fortunately for our family we had the best specialist to help diagnose and treat her condition almost from day 1 of her life. And her doctor is none other than Dr. Orenstein himself (or just Dr. O to us). I can speak from personal knowledge that he is without a doubt the most informative doctor I have ever been around. He truly cares about the children in his care and he takes a proactive role in their health and well-being. His book is considered the CF bible by those in the know in the Pediatric Pulmonary field. As you read this picture a man with a bow tie and sandals explaining this to you. It is very easy to read and understand which when it comes to this disease is very important. I am happy to say that my daughter is almost 12 and thanks to Dr. O and his staff is in excellent health. If you know someone with this disease get them this book or better yet get it for yourself as well. Knowledge and understanding of the disease can really help.

This book accurately describes the disease cystic fibrosis (CF) and offers guidance in self-management on day to day problems. As a mother of a son who has CF, I highly recommend this book to any family dealing with CF.

I eagerly await the 3rd edition of this book. As a fully involved CF parent, my 8y/o daughter's care has benefited from my increased knowledge. I can form theories and question her caregivers from a more informed perspective and that is a win-win situation. If you have a child with CF, you should have this book. I call it the CF Bible.(Although encyclopedia would be a more accurate description.) I feel this book should be given to the parents of all newly diagnosed children.

Im a teenager and was diagnosed with CF when I was born in 1989.
It was recently that I wanted to do some more reading on my disease. I looked through some books and was shocked by what I was reading. As many of you know, the out-of-date books on CF can have some very frightening information, like death and more infections, and etc. It was I discovered this book that I was so much more relaxed about my condition. This book is up-to-date and tells the real facts about this disease. After reading this, my disease doesn't scare me anymore.
If you are a teen, like me, I suggest you read thid.
If you know anybody with CF, you should read this book or have them read this. Don't let them read those early books on CF with the grim facts...have them read this with the true and helpful facts.
