After reading this book I threw away my Colgate toothpaste and Listerine mouthwash, replacing them both with the Closys brand from Wallgreens. And the sores in my mouth disappeared! The book doesn't mention any of these brands specifically, but it tells you how to read the labels to select products that won't harm you. The book is a short, easy read that lets you know more than most dentists seem to know about how to keep your mouth in perfect condition.

I thought this book was the best ever explanation about why gum care and oral hygeine in general is so important to overall health. Dr. Bonner uses easy understood language that an non-medical person can feel comfortable reading it. I now recommend this book to all my clients and friends as a "must read"!

The connection between dental health and several infectious diseases, plus heart attacks and strokes, is still not commonly known. Dr. Bonner's book clearly and accurately makes the case, as well as providing the remedies for those and various dental conditions. Dr. Bonner doesn't hesitate to list products and techniques he and others have found through years of dental practice to be safe and effective, and many that are neither. It's good seeing so much vital information packed into a compact, easily understood book.

This book takes center stage in our reception and treatment rooms! Instrumental in my clinical practice as a dental hygienist are the very points made in this ground breaking and prevention oriented guide to oral health. No more will I struggle to explain the connection of the health of the mouth to total body health. My treatment and home oral health recommendations have been aligned with those in this book for over 15 years. And I have witnessed the positive difference with my patients especially when the top 10 nutritionals for oral health are taken and irrigation with the Oxycare 3000 becomes a daily routine. Read it - Study it - and most importantly - Do it! Thank you Drs. Bonner and Mindell for helping us learn how we can improve oral health, practitioners and people alike!

Dr. Bonner Trys to Spread The Truth

Dr. Michael Bonner is the only medical author I know of who emphasizes the seriousness of dental and gum disease, and its impact on cardiac health. Though others have written about the topic, Dr. Bonner sounds the alarm, and gives the reader a protocol which can reverse oral disease, and promote a return to vital health.
What I learned about the impact of C-reactive protein (Crp),
and the tests he tells you to take to identify it, and the steps you need to take (how to keep your gums and mouth healthy)to lower it have been potentially life-saving for me. Clearly written and well organized, I rate it 5 stars.

If you thought you knew how to brush your teeth yet your gums were bleeding and teeth were getting wobbly and bridges at the best were in store, read this book to fight off this "aging" process. Many of his suggestions have since been incorporated into toothpaste formulas, proxabrushes, etc.

Basics your parents AND dentist never taught you

This was a great book and I notice on today's grocery shelves that finally many manufacturers are following Dr. Cali's simple recomendations from more than 14 years ago. Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide diluted by half as a mouth wash, tooth brushes and brushing, it's amazing how much you never knew before and no one bothered to tell you. Everyone knows how to brush their teeth. Right? Wrong!(I'm a prime example of more than 40 years ignorance on the subject) and Dr. Cali's book gives you the simple tips to effectively brush your teeth--and gums. Since that's what we're talking about here, the gum disease that's the most common cause of tooth loss after the age of 40. Expensive and timely stuff crowns, bridges, implants, dentures-- and often not necessary if you follow Dr. Cali's simple advice early enough. I hope it can be updated for the end of this millenium and re-published.

This text is Dr.Grant's legacy to the study of periodontology and clinical practice of periodontics. He was the senior author on this text for more than thirty years. He was a world renowned lecturer, researcher and practitioner. He continued teaching and research until four months prior to his death in April of 1998. Many of his research papers are required reading in classical periodontal literature for periodontal residents. His text remains a wealth of knowledge and instruction for clinical practice. His eulogy was published in the Journal of Periodontology in August of 1998. It details many of his accomplishments as well as the high regard in which he was held by his colleagues.

I bought this book to supplement hands on trainings in periodontal surgery.
More than half of the pages contain beautiful photographs, color pictures, and diagrams with easy to follow and extensive explanations.
It covers everything from cellular development to implants.
This book is by far one of the best clinical guides written about the periodontium and periodontal surgery.

A must-have textbook

This textbook, written and edited by the field's leading experts, has been needed for quite a while. It includes all the necessary information that any perio text should have---chapters on etiology, prognosis, treatment, etc---but goes above and beyond. With chapters covering complex suture techniques, systemic disease links, microsurgery, implants, medically-compromised pts, conscious sedation, and surgical principles, this text is the first truly comprehensive lesson in periodontics. The high-quality color photos set the bar high for future textbooks on the subject, and it belongs in the library of not only residents but accomplished clinicians.

Comprehensive text for dental hygienists on periodontology!

Review Date: 1998-04-22
In the past, editors watered down their texts for dentists and served them to dental hygienists. This textbook has always considered the dental hygienist a central focus in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. I have used this text as a reference for my CE courses and studies, but also for my patients in order to understand grafts, implants and other aspects of treatment that sometimes are not fully explained my practitioners. This area has expanded so much in new technologies that I am already looking forward to the next edition.

I was fortunate enough to attend some lectures given by Dr Gilbert during my time at Dundee Dental School, i found her book very uselful whilst learning the subject for the first time, and have continued to find it useful since graduation. I'd recommend this book to any dental undergraduate (dentist, hygienist or therapist) or to a dental professional wishing to revise their periodontal knowledge and periodontal classifications.

This is very detailed information about periodontal diseases. It includes etiology, microbiology, body's immune response, great illustrations and tables which make easier memorization and understanding. If you have enough patience to read it all, at the end you have very substantial knowledge about the subject. It is great book for the dental hygienist students and future dentists as well.

top-of-the-line text

What can I say? This textbook is strikingly well-written. Really, a monumental achievement. The writing is incisive, interesting, even fascinating. For those who thought periodontics was basically scaling and root planing, an odyssey through this book's 1,000 pages shows otherwise. The illustrations are well-chosen and informative, and the quality of scholarship is consistently excellent throughout its 77 chapters. It exhausts every topic related to periodontology, from flap surgery to the microbiology of the inflammatory response, to basic s/rp therapy, to the logic of hand instrumentation, and is very up-to-date. Probably the best textbook on the subject. The accompanying CD-Rom was not too useful, mostly pretty pictures and captions, but it's the text that counts. Revelations stud the pages and the book presents a solid overal paradigm of modern periodontics.

A Valuable Reference

This is a very thick book for a private practitioner. Practically all factors affecting periodontal disease are being discussed, from epidemiology, etiology, pathology to the treatment and comprehensive management of periodontal disease.

My interest in the book begins from Section IV, Periodontal Surgical because we didn't learn much of this in dental school. Even techniques for periodontal plastic surgery are covered. I find this part most helpful in my private practice which focuses on cosmetic dentistry.

The section on implantology is also very useful. All too often, those of us sinking implants are only concerned with bone. Ignoring the soft tissues often lead to aesthetic problems later on. The information covered here is even more valuable than some of those you'll find in books dedicated to implants alone.

My only complaint is that there are not enough colour images.
