Fantastic asset for families with PKU

My husband grew up PKU and had been on his diet the majority of his life when we met. When we got married I'd never dealt with cooking for a vegetarian, let alone low protein diet. So, I started hunting for resources. This cookbook has been an asset in our kitchen ever since. Highly recommended to those with PKU families, even more so for children! A lot of these recipes are family tested and even, in my case, non PKU diet approved. I can still make sure I get my daily essentials, but cook delicious meals for my husband as well. I've even been able to derive my own recipes from the things I've learned. Fantastic book. I highly recommend it!

My daughter is 27 now and we've been using an old version of this cookbook for something like the last 20 years. I never bought the special ingredients that some recipes need, but just reading the book from cover to cover gave me enough ideas on how to adapt regular recipes for her special restricted protein diet. There are other, newer cookbooks by Ginny Schuett, and also lots of on-line sites with recipes, but this is the original. Some sites also provide lists of other amino acids in these recipes, besides PHE.

I bought this because my future sister-in-law has PKU. Her mother recommended it, and the book does a good job of explaning questions I wouldn't even think to ask. It is full of information, recipes, and other resources. Some of the contact information for the specialty food distributors is out of date, but easily updated by doing an internet search of the companies and penciling in the new information. I'm not the best qualified reviewer for this book, but as far as I am concerned, it is an excellent resource.

These women are saints!! There is not enough room on this forum to describe how amazingly awesome this book is. My 1 year old Niece has PKU, and luckily enough my nephew-in-law absolutely LOVES to cook. I got this for him (along with the PKU bread maker recipes) as a Christmas gift and he flipped! He said everything in the book looks fantastic, and there is literally everything from apples to zucchini. If you're needing a low protein diet book, or even just wanting to eat healthier, this is by far the best one out there. Thanks again to Virginia Schuett and Dorothy Corry for taking the time to make low-protein foods not so boring! Generations of PKU/Kidney patients and their families will be thanking you for years to come! I know this grateful Great-Aunt does.

Really Yummy Recipies!!

The food in here is really good stuff! I especially love all the cookie recipies, I haven't made one I don't like! All the special food is expensive, but it's worth it. I really don't know how people managed a PKU diet before the book came out. If you can find the second edition, though, it's almost exactly the same page for page, and I like the spiral binding better, so the book lays flat when you're cooking.

Focus on Homocysteine, a short book written by Christina Bolander-Gouaille, provides a clear and concise overview of homocysteine metabolism and the pathophysiologic consequences of homocysteinemia. This timely and well-referenced book succeeds in translating relatively complex biochemistry into easily understandable text supported by excellent diagrams. It provides a comprehensive review of the factors that can influence homocysteine levels, intervention strategies, as well as important advice on sampling procedures. Given the current emphasis on plasma homocysteine as an important biomarker and predictor of numerous chronic disease states, this book will give clinicians and health practitioners a much needed resource for understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of homocysteine metabolism.

This book is excellent. For the advanced student or practitioner, this book enlightens the reader on all aspects of Fluid, Jin-ye, Phlegm, Dampness, and their origins. It also discusses herbs in a very interesting and useful way, comparing and contrasting phlegm and damp herbs and their specifics. This is my favorite theory book on my shelf.

As a nephrologist and educator, I can say that this is the absolute best book available for learning and teaching fluid, electrolytes, and acid base. Takes a pathophysiologic approach throughout that facilitates true understanding of the subject. Drs. Haperin and Goldstein are the ultimate clinical educators in this area.

An excellent guideline to clinical acid-base physiology

Using patient-based problem solving, this text makes even the most difficult points of acid-base physiology clear. The writing style is breezy and entertaining and the layout allows you to pop in and out of various sections without the need to start from scratch. I have used the text for teaching medical students, residents and physician assistants. There is something in here for everyone. The authors' philosophy is obviously that acid-base problems are giant jig-saw puzzles and that you might as well have fun while working them.

The best text on integrative physiology out there

Review Date: 2005-10-20
This is probably one of the best textbooks on integrative physiology involving electrolytes on the market. Dr. Halperin is a phenomenal instructor and his prose makes learning interactive and interesting. Electrolytes are key to clinical medicine and surprisingly not very well understood by the medical masses. This textbook is full of examples, questions, and pearls.

The abundance of questions with thorough explanations is the strength of this book. An understanding of electolytes including urine electrolytes will be gained from the study of this text.

The target audience is really the physician with an already good grounding in acid-base disorders. It will allow one to build on past knowledge and to solidy any foundation that has already been established. I am really and truly impressed with this book and I refer to it often.

I suspect this is my problem and have found this book to be an informative resource, but hemochromatosis is not just 'chemical' iron overload, but a 'magnetic' ironload, too. I urge every one who has this disease of iron overload to to read the Bioinitiative Report at [...]
and then to search for cell phone towers and antennas on [...]because this is likely why you have the disease and the gene. We have too many manmade electromagnetic/microwave/radiowave fields in the environment today, especially with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It seems there is a cell phone tower on every corner, and many people use cordless phones, too, which is the equivalent of having a cell phone mast inside your home. Please research this for yourself. The cause of Hemochromatosis is electromagnetic and microwave radiation from power lines, cell phone towers, radar, etc... This book will really open your eyes though.

This timely exposure of a truly hidden health hazzard is well written and can be clearly understood by people who are not medical professionals. It is a common sense guide on how to handle this problem of iron overload and most important how to prevent the problem from developing. Other books tend to be too technical or in some cases not detailed enough in their investigative coverage. This book is just right in terms of giving enough clear coverage.

I am so very pleased to recommend this book. The Iron Disorders Institute - and Dr. Weinberg, have "done it again". While the book is geared towards medical professionals, I find it quite understandable as a layperson whose family is affected by hemochromatosis/iron overload. "Exposing The Hidden Dangers of Iron" takes up where "Guide to Hemochromatosis" lets off.

Especially of interest to me is the in-depth education on how iron specifically effects each system of the body. The extensive information given on diagnosis and treatment is invaluable. The graphics are incredible.

Dr. Weinberg is a leading expert in infectious disease and cancer. He is well known for his work which focuses on prevention of chronic disease by reducing iron levels by reducing intake of iron in diet and discontinuing contributive factors such as tobacco use and alcohol. His more than fifty years work in the field of iron's relationship to cancer has earned him prestige and recognition worldwide. He is a pioneer in the field of iron studies, and has provided us with more than 350 articles and books devoted to iron. I have had the honor of hearing Dr. Weinberg speak in person numerous times, and have never failed to walk away richer for the experience. My expectations have not been disappointed with this excellent publication.

I'm almost half-way through this book, and for the first time I'm understanding the concepts behind metabolic diseases. Rather than overwhelming the reader with biochemistry, the author helps organize the diseases into practical categories and emphasizes concepts rather than details. This book is a good read, plus it will serve as an excellent resource for future reference. Highly recommended for any primary care provider who cares for infants and children.

Excellent review of strategies for the evaluation of suspected inborn errors of metabolism. Simple and eloquent writing makes this an exceptional introduction to the topic for students, residents and fellows. Organized by organ system and symptom complex, it makes for easy referencing to generate a differential diagnosis as well. Would highly recommend for genetics, neurology and pediatrics training programs. It will be instituted into our required reading for rotating residents in our Child Neurology department. The price is very reasonable and well within the means of trainees.

Dr. Michael Moore has MD has done a splendid job in his comprehensive overview of a very complex and unknown disease. I have found myself referring to his book often as I travel my journey of porphyria as an AIP patient. Porphyria is a greatly undiagnosed and underdiagnosed disease. Dr. Moore has taken a complex disorder and written his book in such a way that patients can better understand their disorder and at the same time be able to share that information with others who are completely unfamiliar with porphyria including many primary care physicians. An excellent resource and reference book!

This book takes scientific basics of nutrition and physiology and transcribe them into everyday language. The explanations for why things are the way they are with losing weight are very helpful and provide a moderate level of knowledge, but enough to allow the reader to make informed personal decisions. I especially liked the position the author took of making small changes while building to a bigger goal. We all know of failure from trying to "bite off more than we could chew." Great book! Wonderful lessons!

Incredibly insightful, very thorough book, worth every penny. This is more than just a textbook; it should have been called a reference book. You will find yourself looking back upon this innumerable times. A very technical work, it is not an "easy read" for someone outside this field, but certainly understandable to those professionals and students familiar with biological sciences.
