The Best Place to Start

This great book, although somewhat dated, is the best place to start for any psychiatrist or neurologist wishing to add cognitive testing to their clinical examination. I have written several papers on the topic, developed and published my own mental status examination, and this book was my starting point. If you can find it, get it.

Updated Classic

Recommended by a veteran neurologist, who had used an earlier edition as a neurology resident. He reviewed this edition and found it to be as solid as ever, with updated info on neuropsych and neuroimaging. As a psych resident, I found it extremely useful in that it correlates organic brain insults with neuropsych findings. Well written, concise, well illustrated.

Mental status examination in neurology (cognitive tests, lobe function tests etc)is often a source of worry for trainees in
psychiatry. Traditional psychiatric text books donot address this important aspect of psychiatry and trainers (who often
themselves neglected this) add to trainees confusion. This classic book clearly addresses this problem by detailing every test and its clinical application in a simple language.Iam sure every reader would emerge confident with clear concepts after reading this book.

Excellent therapy tool for higher level cognition

I work at a outpatient head injury rehab facility and deal mainly with higher level cognition such as attention, problem solving, and memory. It is very difficult to find materials and I used to make up my own. This book has allowed me to free up alot of the time I used producing my own materials. It is a terrific book and a great asset. One other therapist in my facility has bought the book and our student affiliate has taken great interest in it. Great job at making such a useful tool!

This is an excellent book for beginning therapists as well as those who have been in the field for several years. I have had the distinct pleasure of working with these authors over the last few months and have found them to be an excellent example of dedicated speech therapists who are willing to go the extra mile for their clients who are higher functioning. The acitivites in this book are functional and easy to adapt to individual clients and their needs. I guarantee that you will find this book useful in planning the most effective and functional therapy for you clients. Enjoy!!

As a graduate student, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. I have used it in many different practicum settings, and find the activities and exercises easy to use as well as effective. In addition, the appendix on 'therapy documentation, transition, and discharge' has been very helpful as I learn more about the paperwork that accompanies the field of speech-language pathology.

Perfect first resource for parents of ADHD children
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-01
In this thin volume, Mary Fowler has managed to capture the information that parents of children newly diagnosed with ADHD want and need to know. (It also makes a great review of the basics for more seasoned parents). The questions cover social issues, home and family problems, and strategies for schools. I'm sure that many parents will turn first to Chapter 13: "What parenting practices work best?" Fowler gives specific suggestions along with lots of reassurance. "20 Questions" is brief and to the point, and yet wonderfully informative--the perfect first resource for parents wary of being overwhelmed by too much information. This book is also a good one to give to family friends or relatives you wish knew more about ADHD, but who probably wouldn't sit down with a 300-page reference. I keep several copies on hand to give to the anxious parents of all my new patients.

Outstanding Book!

Having read more than 30 books on ADHD, I have found this one to be one of the best. It provides an excellent resource for understanding and diagnosing ADHD, as well as "overlapping" disorders, like ODD, and Conduct Disorder. This book is easy to read for parents, but probably a good book even for professionals who may be unfamiliar with the basics of this disorder. There is also a detailed section on treatment, including behavior management and medication. A very timely section covers obtaining special school services and classroom techniques for teachers. If you don't have any books yet on ADHD, this is a great one to start with and keep as a resource in your home library.

Good Practical Advice for Parents and Teachers

I have read over 10 books about ADHD. After you finally face that your child has ADHD you want to know how to help.

This book clearly explains how ADHD is addressed under IDEA and the 504 plan and how an IEP (Individual Educational Plan) fits is associated with both the IDEA and 504. It also gives recommendations about how to best use the IEP to your childs advantage.

This book also provides information about behavior modification. It explains what it is and how it works. This information should be helpful to any parent of an ADHDer.

There is also a chapter about "Classroom Techniques" that suggests some things that teachers can do to help the ADHD child be more successful and less disruptive in school. I will use the information in this chapter to help develop my child's IEP. I will also buy another copy of this book to give to my child's teacher and I'll put an amazon book mark at this chapter!

In summary, it's one of the most useful books about ADHD I've read. Get one for yourself and one for your child's teacher.

Easy read... Helped me understand my child better...

There were things that were a mystery to me about my daughter from the moment she was born.

She had to be swaddled tightly, or she would scream for hours. She could not sleep, unless she was in a swing. As she grew, she could/would not eat anything that was not soft in texture. She screamed like she was in pain when I brushed her teeth. Screamed and frantically cried in the bathtub. Cried when we sang. She acted like rain was burning her skin and would cry and try to pull her arms and head in her shirt. She never walked anywhere barefoot. Would not swim in a pool, run through the sprinklers, or fingerpaint. She wouldn't get "messy" without being frantic about washing the dirt off. There were certain outfits or shoes she would refuse to wear...

If this sounds like your child, this book will help. I thought my child was a "bad baby", and could not figure her out... Until I read this book. I even found that my father and I have MANY sensory integration issues. This book helped me relate to my child better, and find ways to "desensitize" her to her surroundings. With the help of this book (she did not qualify for Occupational Therapy), my husband and I figured out ways to get her to live without being defensive to everything.

A year later, she is taking showers, swimming in creeks, running through sprinklers, asks me to help her brush her teeth, plays in the mud, etc. She seems nothing like the child we knew back then. This book will help you calm your child's senses, and make him/her more comfortable in their world.

"Evidence based neurology" is a thin book with a small table of content. Many exotic question will not be covered there but for daily neurological routine it seems mandatory to me. Well, neurological evidence may increase in time and this book is a well done start.

This is a useful book for non-scientists and scientists who are interested to know the updated science of Gene Therapy for brain diseases. The book covers the gene therapy research and clinical trials for many CNS diseases such as: Pain, Alzheimer, Parkinson and Brain tumors. Nice figures and colors. Established authors in the field such as P. Lowenstein, M. Castro, F. Gage, A. D. Larocque, A. Epstein, L. Medina-Kauwe, Sofreniew, Federoff, Dunnett, D. Curiel, Fueyo, Pulkkanen, C.
