This is an interesting book about neurology. I read it over the weekend and totally enjoyed it. Dr. Klawans described 22 neurological cases ranging from common diseasess such as stroke, Parkinson's , Huntington's , multiple sclerosis, migraine to rare medical problem like mercury poisoning, cluster headache, or CJD. The book is easy to read. Highly recommended to students in health professions.
maybe better than Sacks

I got this book at my local public library from a general search I was doing in the catalog. I enjoy books in the vein of neurological anecdotes like those of Oliver Sacks.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and decided early on the I would be sure to write a review to share this find with other readers.
I was thrilled by this book. Each of the cases presented is well written and interesting. He tells the story of his acquaintance with a subject or theme, events surrounding the case, what conclusions he considered, what diagnosis he chose; also includes historical information on many neurological diseases covered.
The author manages to include a distinctly human touch without straying long from the science. A bonus was the "author's notes" at the end of each chapter. These included things like follow-up reading, post mortems, related tales, retrospective comments.

Dr. Klawans articulately presents several more neurological case studies in this follow-up book to Toscanini's Fumble. Not all of them involve his own patients - some discuss historical figures such as Isaac Newton or the biblical figure of Joshua. Dr. Klawans' thorough studies and insightful commentary make this enjoyable reading for medical professionals and laymen alike. I think it slightly better than Toscanini's Fumble, even though both are occasionally given to hubris and a little too much self-certainty. The chapters are not too long and the writing is crisp, so this would make a good Christmas or birthday present.

A much more user friendly and updated version of the smaller Walsh & Hoyt text. The pictures are excellent and the discussions are well supported by clinical experience and the literature.

This is a very good review book.I believe every neurologist should have this book on the shelf - as a reference to all neuro complications derived from cancer. It is very well organized and has a lot of new data inside. Besides, is really easy to read. Is the newest version of Cancer Neurology published in 1995 by JB Posner - which is still an excellent textbook to have.

Great Neurology. Poor Psychiatry. Conservative Camp

This book is exceptional at showing the severe effects of the Lyme spirochete on the brain. While it is old, it has good use for clinicians in both Lyme camps. The book's weakness is a complete lack of appreciation for the subtle, common and serious psychological, psychiatric and information processing problems caused by Lyme. In other words, if Lyme can cause a stoke it certianly can cause sadness. If it can do serious damage, it can do subtle damage. Unfortunately, some neurologists like the author do not appear able to see these types of deficits, which newer research and experience has shown are present. Further, the book relies on dubious labs using limited strains and test protiens. Having said all this, I am logging on to buy my THIRD copy! Which shows that physicians who want better labs and complete and full antibiotic treatment, do read the other side and are willing to glean pearls. I hope Dr. Riek will join Dr. Fallon at Columbia and write an update.

Unfortunately this book was published in 1991, which makes certain aspects of the text dated. I have not found any revision. Some of the more recent serology and other testing was not known at that time. As an example MRI has been significantly improved since 1991.
In spite of it's 1991 publication date this is a carefully composed and well documented monograph of the Neurologic Implications of this terrible disease. The author is a well respected Neurologist. Excellent References for each chapter.
At the time it was written the controversry surrounding Lyme Disease was not so combative and political as it is today.
Keeping that in mind this book is a wonderful resource for any physician treating Lyme patients.
The discussion includes Pathogenesis, Pathology, Clinical Features
and an excellent documentation of the unquestioned fact of Neurological Lyme Disease (Neuroborreliosis). There are treatment recommendations that are still useful today and a sample of helpful color plates. There is a valuable discussion of Seronegative Lyme Disease and of Magnetic Resonance Images. Keep in mind that this book is only 130 pages. But not a word is wasted and it is unfortunate that a revision and expanded edition has not been published. Anyone treating these patients should have this book in addition to other appropriate texts. I have an interest in this subject and readers with similar concerns are invited to share information with me.

This text is a well-written and concise guide to cognitive and behavioral neurology that would benefit those interested in neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry, and neuropsychology. Coverage includes the major disorders resulting from cortical and subcortical lesions, with interesting historical background given in many cases. The only content drawback is the persistent inclusion of the philosophical pontifications of Francis Crick, but these can be easily overlooked.

good variety of cases, but no MRI

This booklet is about 250 pages, divided in two chapters: the first occupies the majority of the book is a total of 52 neurological cases, each starts with the history and physical exam followed by clues, usually pictures, (neuronatomical or lab or imaging), however no MRI, followed by several short questions, on the next page there are the consice extremely helpfull and shortly explaining answers. After the answers there are several Pearls and pitfalls related to the case: like when you should suspect the disease or important epidemiological information, brief clinical review. Finally few refrrences. The case are well chosen covering wide spectrum of neurology; Headache, Stroke, Meningitis, Vertigo, Ataxia, Neoplasm, Dementia, most intresting were the few, but not uncommon disease such as Botulism, Cervical artery dissection. The drawback is the booklet is many years old, so some treatments are out of date, and there is NO MRI pictures, but that absolutley does not affect to any extent the wide selction of the cases nor the well written expalntions. The second part, about 30 pages is very short 12 cases dealing with common symptome or signs in the office followed by few lines of again well written explanations. As a neurology resident, despite being familiar with those information, I found those 52 and 12 clinical cases very challenging. I beleive it will be a good source for every neurology resident, especially it is fast and easy to read.
