As a pre-nursing student, the competition is fierce to get into a program. When I first received these study guides I thought I had paid way too much for what I got and thought the material simplistic. What I found is that 25% to 35% of my test questions were very close to the examples given. If you are a serious student, these guides are another tool in your total study regime. They are not intended to be your ONLY source of study and review. There are no easy ways to learn the Sciences, but these focus on some of the commonly tested areas. I wanted all the resources I could find and it paid off with A's.

This book made studying the Nervous System In Anatomy and Physiology very easy, being that the nervous system is one of the hardest topics to learn. This sudy guide helped me gain the knowledge thoroughly. The questions were thorough and covered all the areas of the nervous system

Simply the best text I've yet encountered on spinal anatomy. Thorough yet concise, and accurate. Drs. Cramer & Darby are to be congratulated on a superb product. I own and use the 1st (1995) edition of this text. Prior to its release, I used a combination of over six different anatomy texts and integrated their various levels of information into professional notes on spinal anatomy. I have found this text to equal or exceed those notes in all respects. Moreover, the information provided by Drs. Cramer & Darby has proven consistently reliable, unlike many other texts. I have not yet seen the 2nd edition of this text, but expect that it would continue the quality of the 1st while containing further integration of contemporary spinal research within its pages.

This is a great book.

Basic and Clinical Anatomy of the Spine, Spinal Cord and ANS will collect no dust on your shelf. Whether you are faculty, a new student, or a practicing physician, this text is an excellent source of accurate, up-to-date information that is presented in an easy to use, quick reference, format. The exquisite detail of the numerous tables is all-inclusive and very helpful (i.e. chapter four [muscles that influence the spine] contains a 7 page layout of the name, location, origin, insertion, action, and innervation of every muscle that affects the spine). The text also contains excellent photographs and artistic renderings of all the anatomy discussed within. If you can only afford a couple texts, make this one of your purchases.

Very good textbook for chiropractic and osteopathic students

This book is very complete and gives full descriptions of the anatomy of the spine. I would recommend this book for any chiropractic students taking a class in spinal anatomy, for any osteopathic student taking gross anatomy and any physical therapy students taking anatomy classes. However, I would also recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (ISBN: 0971999600)
This study guide will definitely give you an edge on tests and prepare first year chiropractic students to know the type of questions to be ready for. If you want to pass spinal anatomy without stress and get good grades, both books are a must buy. My study group and I used both books and we all passed spinal anatomy class with at least a B in our chiropractic school.

Basic and Clinical Anatomy of the Spine, Spinal Cord, and ANS is an excellent text for both students and clinicians that specialize in the spine. As a chiropractic student, I used the first edition for my spinal anatomy class and as a National Chiropractic Board Exam review and found it to be extremely helpful.

Now I am preparing to enter my private outpatient practice and decided to pick up the 2nd edition of this text to use as a reference. I was thoroughly impressed with the new edition. The new edition offers many advantages over any other book that I have seen in the anatomical description of the spine, and the clinical application of this knowledge. I was particularly impressed with the presentation of the latest research related to the spine, the brilliant new illustrations, high resolution CT and MR images, and the new material related to the ANS (and its role in pain), intervertebral disc degeneration, and the pediatric spine. Although it isn't new, I also appreciate the red-lined sections that mark the clinically relevant information (which I think will be very helpful in the next few years as a quick review in practice).

For those who already own the first edition, I would highly recommend updating to this edition simply based on the wealth of new information that science has revealed concerning the spine and nervous system. For those who haven't experienced this book, I would recommend it for its dual use as a basic science reference and as a clinical science review. I think this book holds tremendous value for both students and practitioners (DCs, DOs, MDs, PTs, etc) that work with the spine and nervous system.

Good book for medically-based chiropractors.

Written by DC's and PhD's at National College of Chiropractic. Red ruled sections give relevant clinical information, which is nice, and chapter 11 (pain of spinal origin)is very helpful, but it can sometimes read like stereo instructions.

Our nervous system is the communication channel between our brain and it's end organs, (stomach, lungs, kidneys, etc) if the nerves are not able to get proper signal back and forth, what would any reasonable, thinking, non-biased, person expect to have happen to the body? It's really, just common sense. The book is very helpful in illustrating how the process occurs.

Definitely A Must-Read

I also am a chiropractor and I have to disagree with the other chiropractor's opinion. I have personally witnessed and hear about chiropractic miracles every day. These are related to conditions other than pain syndromes and musculoskeletal problems. Patients who experience a multitude of visceral problems and symptoms somehow see a reduction in/elimination of these problems and symptoms. So the question is why/how does this happen? This book helps us to answer some of these questions. There are many other sources to check regarding this, including numerous research articles. Check for yourself, the research is out there and accessible. As a society, we are becoming more and more unhealthy, even though we are living longer due to modern technology. The bottom line is, there are many questions that continue to need to be answered, but let's not close the door and our minds to the possibilities that already exist and that will continue to become less of a secret and become more well known and accepted.

To my knowledge, this text succeeds in bridging the gap between clinical neurology and basic neurosciences as no other one did before. In doing so it makes significantly more rational the current management of neurologic diseases. A new edition should be available soon.

the science of digestion
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-01
This book describes the author's research into the function of the digestive system, with emphasis on the amazing complexity of its neural control, which operates largely independent of the central nervous system (and independent of our consciousness as well). The book is very thorough, taking you through the gut step by step from one end to the other. There are some abstruse technical parts, but overall the book can be followed by the layman without too much difficulty. The paperback version is a real bargain in terms of the information you get.

The history of enteric nervous system research
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-26
This book narrates the developmental research on the enteric nervous system. It has a lot of specialized information for its 314 pages, narrating in detail most of the steps that lead to the current ideas. The explanations include basic concepts as well as more complex ones, and covers the subject extensively, including genetics and embriology. It does so in a very illustrative and clear manner. There is also a long list of "who's who and who did what" in the various researches. There is a special focus in Hirschsprung's disease. It is interesting to see how medical research develops, the dead ends, the opposite views that become cooperative explanations, the surprises that lead to new routes, the renewal of old observations.
It is not a book for those who search treatment for their personal health problems. Personally, I was expecting a little more information concerning gut functioning and mood, but that is just me. The book is very well written, interesting, but prepare yourself for a big load of detailed information.

disappointing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
I started reading this book after The Colbert Report plugged it (IIRC) as kind of a joke about "thinking with your gut". I was curios to learn about this other nervous system that you don't really hear much about; how it's independent of the central nervous system (in ways), and how similar chemicals and processes operate on both.
So here's the good part: the first few chapters are a very educational review of how our guts work. This part I found very illuminating and interesting, and it's too bad it ended so quickly.
Now, the bad. Once Gershon starts talking about his own research and advances in his field in general it just becomes incredibly tedious. I also found it distracting when the author repeatedly makes comments against "cruel" experiments in animals (not _his_ experiments of course, which are, supposedly, a real treat to the subjects).
So the first few chapters give you information at 90mph, and then rest is a slow 2mph trek through recent research in excruciating detail.

The biggest disappointment, however, is the fact that the book just doesn't deliver on its title. A "groundbreaking new understanding of nervous disorders of the stomach" made me expect cool revelations about how the gut can actually suffer nervous disorders similar to those in the brain - i.e. "depressed gut syndrome", or "stomach madness". None of that. What a gip! So big whoop, Serotonin also plays a big part in the gut. That's essential 70% of the book right there.

Read it if you're looking for an introduction to the bowls (though I'm guessing there are better introductions out there). That part of the book I thoroughly enjoyed. Just know it gets boring very quickly and doesn't improve until the end.

This book is very comprehensive and well written. It is probably too technical for the average reader although anyone with a science or medical background should be fine. The discussion of the various research techniques and findings build up a complete view of the current state of research in the field of neurogastroenterology. A reader looking for a simple solution to their irritable bowel syndrome will be disappointed.

I'm extremly glad I've read this book before attending medical school. The author provides a textbook quality overview of the enteric nervous system in so many pages without boring or confusing the reader in the slightest bit. I loved this book and wish there were more neurobiologist authors out there like him.

This books was very helpful in my study of the Cranial Nerves. Not ony did it show the nerves in 3-D, but it also gave clincal applications of each cranial nerve. It was tremendously helpful because it gives the nerve components which makes clinical applications relevant. The detail of this book is sufficient and meets the needs of a medical school student. It is a "must-have" for medical school and the boards.
