Fascinating-An Insightful Journey

This book has been a dream of mine since I was eight-years-old. Contained within the pages are 31 poems and three short stories. Two of the poems and two short stories are about my Grandpa-for whom I have dedicated this book. <br /> Through my own experiences, I have shown my life before I began to become handicapped, at 17, and after a brain scan showed that I would become more and more physically handicapped as I grew older. <br /> <br><br><b>Dreams in August: Life, Love, and Cerebellar Ataxia</b><br><br>Dreams in August is a compilation of poems and short stories. Two of the poems, "Crack the Code" and "My Agility Goes Slipping Away", and one short story, "Living in a Cloud: A Day in the Life of Cerebellar Ataxia", have appeared in the newsletter published by The National Ataxia Foundation. A couple of the poems are based on actual events in my Grandpa's Life: his birth in New York City to German immigrant parents, Anna and Max, is portrayed in "'Merican Sohn", and "Life gone Awry" is a depiction of something that he really used to say, jokingly, to my brothers and me at dinnertime. "A Spidery Birth" is a true accounting of events leading up to my own birth. The short stories "When You Cry, I Cry, Too" and "The Test" are based on factual experiences in both my Grandpa's life and my life. There are many other poems: about love, hope, frustration, dreams, a hermit, a reunion, loss, summer, growing up, writing, my cat-Zack Cat, and the computer. Great resource guide, Incredible insights

Important and Informative Book

This is such a good book. It is a must read-especially for a person, like me, who has Cerebellar Ataxia. <br /> <br />This book chronicals the lives of the Schut family from 1908-1972. This family had (has) hereditary Cerebellar Ataxia. It shows the struggle that each person had with the possibilty of showing symptoms of the disease and the anguish of watching relatives die of complications of Ataxia. This large family faced fear and grief, but always carried hope for a cure in the future. <br /> <br />Their pain and anguish created the search for a cure. Various members of the family participated in research studies. In 1957, THE NATIONAL ATAXIA FOUNDATION (see website for current contact information), a non-profit organization, was founded. These were some of the individuals that began the search for a cure. <br /> <br />The charts in the appendix provide further explaination of the text. The geneological charts were so interesting-so full of data. The handwriting smaple on the last page looks so similar to my own writing. Those pages received a lot of attention. <br /> <br />With all the knowledge that has been gained over the years we are closer. Very Help and easy to read

This book is about the author's story regarding her Ataxia disease. I become very knowledgable about this disease when my doctor tells me I have it. I find a lot of similiar things happened to me the author described in this book. Also, there are a lot of helpful tips and suggestion near the end of this book to help me cope with this disease. A Balancing Act-Living with Spinal Cerebellar Ataxia

It was comforting to read about the trials that another individual has had to deal with over the course of the years since being diagnosed. I too am affilicted with this dis-ease, several other neuro-diseases as well as being a disabled Veteran. I have kept journals but have not shared them with anyone other than close family members. Ms. Hamilton has helped me to take a step, so to speak, toward getting my experiences out in the open. Thank you Ms Hamilton for your courage and determination. Very good inspirational book

Pat does a very good job in describing her life and how it was to live with a debilitating disease such as Ataxia. In it, she also describes how she went about applying for social security and the barriers she had to overcome--a very good book for those facing challenges or diseases (not just Ataxia) and how to overcome them. disappointing book

I ordered this book for a recently diagnosed friend in the UK, and frankly I've already imparted to her more information in the research I did myself from the internet. This leaflet is definitely not worth $12.50 18898262002222004-04-13

Promise unfulfilled

As a sufferer of SCA I looked forward to receiving this book as there is limited published information available especially in smaller countries. It contains some basic information on coping with balance and related problems, but nothing that a General Practitioner wouldn't impart in the first 10 minutes following diagnosis and /or one's own common sense would guide. There are some useful internet addresses but anyone who orders this book through the internet has probably already discovered those [and more] using a search engine. It costs a great deal for shipping to other parts of the world and the full cost [especially to people in countries which don't have social security or government support] is significant. The description of "Paperback" is a gross mis-statement - this is at best a "pamphlet" or "booklet" I was left hugely disappointed and angry.This booklet is hot off the presses! The basis of these deficits could be perceptual, motor or at one of the intermediate stages linking these processes. Here, we review studies of visually guided reaching in neglect and integrate these results with findings from normal human and monkey action control. We consider evidence which shows that neglect patients can be slow to initiate or execute reaches particularly to a contralesional target. We discuss the directional and spatial deficits that may interact to contribute to such reaching abnormalities and highlight the importance of effective target selection and on-line guidance, exploring the idea that deficits in these mechanisms underlie increased susceptibility to ipsilesional visual distraction in neglect. We also examine the relationship between optic ataxia and neglect by considering two illustrative cases, one with pure optic ataxia and the other with optic ataxia plus neglect, which reveal differences in the anatomical substrates of the two syndromes. We conclude that many patients with neglect make abnormal visually guided reaches, but the pattern of reaching deficits is highly variable, most likely reflecting heterogeneity of lesion location across subjects. Rather than being specific to the neglect syndrome, abnormalities of reaching in these patients may correspond to the extent of damage to the visuomotor control system which involves critical regions in both the parietal and frontal cortex, the white matter tracts connecting them and subcortical regions.
