My father is on a new renal diet. He just started going to dialysis three times a week. This book helped us cope with the sudden demands of a renal diet and really helped calm our fears. Cooking for a dialysis patient isn't nearly as complicated and daunting as we thought. Highly recommended!

This book is basically a list of foods with the nutritional content important to renal patients. As such it is a good guide when preparing a meal. It should be noted that this IS NOT a cookbook. It has no recipes in it.

My husband began dialysis over a year ago and it's been a constant search to find useful information--finally found it. This book is an absolute essential tool for those who are serious about dealing with their problem. It is not to be confused with a cookbook but is a wealth of information on almost all foods. Not much missing. Worth it's weight in gold to us. As a side note--the staff at his center were unaware of it and are now looking in to purchasing a number of them!!!

I think that the thing I found most helpful about this book, is that the illustrations show normal articulation and then have the traumatized area together for easier comparisons. This book covers everything from cellular biology to disease pathology and histology. It's worth the money to have this book as a resource in your library.

Our family has tried a number of different healthy eating plans and has had difficulty sticking with any one plan because the recipes included in the cookbooks always tasted so bland.

The Strang Cookbook for Cancer Prevention, however, includes recipes so delicious you forget they are healthy! The flavor combinations and spicing of all the recpies are just perfect. We eat from this book nearly everyday!!

I began this book with the premise that there was little more I could learn about diet and lifestyle regarding cancer. As a former cancer patient, I've read anything and everything I could get my hands on. However, I was surprised to find -- only a few pages into the book -- that there were concepts that I had either confused or distorted over the years. Concise and orderly, this book offers current theories and statistical information on many aspects of cancer prevention in a clear and understandable fashion. But the best part is (because having useful information is one thing, putting it to work is another) the recipe section which offers a wide assortment of really delicious dishes, from simple to exotic. it has actually convinced me -- a serious skeptic -- that it's possible to serve food which is not only flavorful and interesting, but healthful as well.

I received this book during the book tour distribution. As a physician I am basically skeptical about books claiming to reduce cancer rates. I was pleasantly surprised by the scientific accuracy of the text. I've since made at least 7 of the recipes, all of which are wonderful! I have found it difficult to locate cookbooks that include easy, fast recipes with low fat and reasonable flavor. Too often the recipes are easy but the ingredients are hard to find; or, the recipe is easy and the taste is bland. This great book meets all of my needs. I really didn't want to like this book, but I love it! And I learned a lot about nutrition to boot!

This book focuses on great foods that happen to be good.

Having read 4o% of all the recipes I was amazed at how tasty all of them were. The recipes are so favorful that you will find it hard to believe that these recipes are also healthy. I went to a bookstore and studied one recipe (for a complete dinner) made the meal and was beyond pleased with the finished product. The instructions are simple and the explanation of why certain food in certain combos are beneficial made me change my why of eating. This book is a must for anyone who just wants to enjoy a good dinner.

I read this book within a matter of days, it's perfect for the beach or if your pennies don't stretch that far then you should read it with a box of chocolates and a glass of wine within easy reach. You will not be able to think about anything else until you have finished it, and even then thoughts will keep popping into your head.

About the best book Dr Walker has ever written. This will always be his classic masterpiece, his epitaph even.

A stunning text that delivers the scientific insight expected from a Dr Walker publication. The revelation here though, and in essence what separates this book from others, is the development of the scientist (and one time 'enfant terrible' of Psychology!) as a story teller. One hesitates to use the word genius - a term all too frequently applied in these celebrity obsessed times - but history will certainly look upon this title very favourably.

If you only read one dermatology self help book this year, then make sure that it's this one!

Medical studies and the personal experiences of hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated that plant-based diets can prevent or improve the conditions of high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis. Moreover, plant-based diets avoid such meat-borne diseases as E. coli infections and outbreaks that seem to be constantly in the news today. Additionally, turning to plant-based diets has a positive effect on such environmental issues as global warming, rainforest depletion, animal abuse, and world-wide hunger. "The Vegetarian Solution" by Stewart Rose (vice president of the non-profit Vegetarians of Washington, the largest regional vegetarian organization in the United States) provides up-to-date information documenting the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet for children, athletes, and senior citizens; preventing and improving a wide variety of medical illnesses; how plant-based diets require fewer natural resources than meat-based diets; and a wealth of advice and suggestions on making a transition to a plant-based diet. An informed and informative, inspired and inspiring read for anyone contemplating changing over to a plant-based diet which entails giving up meat and meat products in their meals, "The Vegetarian Solution" is highly recommended and thoroughly 'user friendly' read.

A very browsable brook, well-written, with interesting and easily understandable graphics that support key points. I'm not a vegetarian, but this book sure is valuable in encouraging me to incorporate even more whole, fresh produce into my diet. In every chapter, I learned something new about physiology and nutrition and the benefits of a plant-based diet. This book is good for anyone interested in improving their health and the health of our society and environment as a whole.

This is a good one!

I have been a lifelong vegetarian, and this is by far the best collection of the relevant information I have seen. It is comprehensive in its scope, including practical tips on moving toward a plant-based diet as well as facts about how food choices impact health, world hunger, animals, and the environment. It is attractive and well-organized, easy to read. All information presented has been backed up by scientific research. No sensational claims are made (I appreciate that). One fun feature includes a list of famous people, past and present who are vegetarian, and in general I would say it has a light-hearted feel.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes nearly 10 years ago. And I found this book very useful and practical. Medical understanding of diabetes is always changing, and this book is a good update for me on the nutritional end. It's even helped me win a couple of arguments with a nurse who is "close" to me, but hasn't studied diabetes since nursing school! Excellent value, and I've recommended it to the nutritionist with whom I work.

No gloom and doom here!

This book is a real bargain for all the help you get!

Whether you've just been told you have diabetes or have lived with it for years, there is something for you here. The writing style is easy to understand, and the ideas are reasonable and practical. There is a lot of good information here, and it is presented in a style that felt like I was connecting with a person, a friendly dietician who understood my confusion and frustration. The author recognizes the fact that people will need time to make changes and helps diabetics find a food plan that they can use with the whole family without agonized screams about serving cottage cheese and carrot sticks for dinner. :) I've bought other books that are either too academic or have meal suggestions that I'd never use. After using some of the ideas in this book, I was able to get my glucose levels into the normal range without too much trouble or eating food I don't like. I also lost 15 pounds to boot without really trying. :)

We first checked this book out from our public library to test it and now we can't live without it!

The recipes are delicious and real-life friendly. We do not have diabetes in our household, but want to put healthy nutritious foods on the table.

In my view, any recipe that passes diabetic guidelines will keep the appetite satisfied and fuel our bodies appropriately. But most importantly to us, these recipies appeal to our senses in making mealtime a pleasure with foods we want to enjoy again and again.

I was diagnosed prediabetic with high numbers 8 weeks ago. After meeting with a nutritionist and trying to make sense of adjustments I needed to make with eating, I really felt confused...there is a lot to learn! Luckily this is the first cookbook I purchased and am so glad. I can whip up many of the dishes in just a couple minutes. The ingredients are not complicated and are easy to keep on hand. I made my Easter dinner for my whole family all from the book and no one but my husband knew it was "special" food! My husband likes how I have been cooking so no cooking two separate kinds of meals. I have bought other diabetic cookbooks but not found any other as good and simple. Most recipes in the other books have longer lists of ingredients and take much more time to prepare. I am a cooking kind of gal who ran my own bed and breakfast for ten years...I love pretty and great tasting food...this book gets gobs of stars from me!

In "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" cookbook author, food consultant, and nutritionist Nancy S. Hughes has compiled simple and delicious recipes for entrees, side dishes and desserts using four ingredients (or less) that are especially suitable and suited to the dietary needs of diabetics. Quick and easy to prepare, the recipes range from Pineapple-Apricot Fizz; Lemony Asparagus Spear Salad; Peach Barbecued Chicken; and Chili Stuffed Potatoes; to Taco-Spiced Rice; Skillet Roasted Veggies; Zesty Beef Patties with Grilled Onions; and Frozen Chocolate Peanut Butter Layered Pie. Of special note are the 'Cook's Tips' that accompany each of the recipes. "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" is a welcome and very highly recommended addition to diabetes relevant cookbook collections.

Michael is also creating a Prostrations for Peace on July l5th that is spreading throughout the country. It's a demonstration against the continued war in Iraq and the continued suffering and killing of our own and Iraqi people.

Review Date: 2007-05-24
HIV-positive journalist Michael McColly travels through South Africa, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Chicago, and Senegal to document the lives of activists, sex workers, and people living with the AIDS. He also tells his own story, humanizing the disease and making it accessible in an intimate and compassionate way.

McColly's careful crafting blends scene and internal observations in a way that moves the vantage point from a feeling in the body to the exterior world, then out to a global perspective, taking the reader with him. Imagery and perception combine to make this not only an important sociological study of multiple struggles (sexuality, AIDS, poverty, healing), but also a literary work. He incorporates facts so that they become a part of the story without losing momentum, allowing the reader to step away from this book with a greater understanding of the scope of the AIDS pandemic.

Posing poignant and at times painful questions throughout his memoir, McColly challenges the reader to confront complex issues.

The book is both disheartening and inspiring as McColly's journey deepens. In Chennai, India, he interviews a man heading AIDS education for sex workers who says, "We are trying to make the young men ... into a cohesive, self-sustaining community. It's the only way they are going to survive not only this disease but this life." This becomes a subtle theme through the book: those who become active in helping others find that reaching out gives them a way to cope with the disease. At times, the story is devastating. Multiple viewpoints and approaches toward the treatment of AIDS help to put the struggles of various countries into a very real perspective.

The After-Death Room is a modern portrait of the diverse spectrum of the AIDS landscape. But the ultimate message does not just apply to AIDS. It is universal: the importance of connecting, understanding, loving, and helping others--which, in this world, is harder than ever to realize, is certainly a thing worth living for.

Heart Fitness for Life's content is much broader than the title indicates. It addresses many basic issues and goes into enough detail to answer questions/concerns from patients and releatives.

After having reviewed and read 18 or more books on heart disease, I can say with confidence that McGowan's book is the best without qualification. Heart books date very quickly but Heart Fitness addressed Homocystein issue and genes in concise style that was easy to understand.

My only suggestion for the next edition would be to address the "stress" as one of the signficant risk factors. Saplosky's, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" is a useful update on stress related disease and the linkag to our hearts.

Dr. Ornish's and Dr. MacDougal's books would make positive companion's to this book and are worth considering.

I strongly recommend McGowan's not as the "first" comprehenisive approach to her topic but as the "most current" on the every changing field of caridology.

I purchased this book after a friend passed away from caner (within days of finding out, he was gone). In speaking with some others and doing some internet research, I kept hearing about this book. It seems that our society is really working against us, as most things have caner causing properties in the contents. This book is an eye opener and I suggest it for those that would like to make some better food decisions and desire to have a greater awareness of what they can do for prevention.

I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search of good health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!

Loaded with the latest Research and many years of practical experience, made this book such a beleivable read, a book I can reference and read over and over again, I specifically used a pink highlighter to zoom in on all the important points, which runs rampant without the whole book. If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K.
