A powerful incentive to do something about heart attack risk
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-04
For about 20% of the population, eating a very lowfat diet will cause increased risk of heart disease. Who are these people? These are primarily men whose grandfathers, fathers and older brothers had heart attacks before age 50. They have high blood pressure and high triglycerides and cholesterol despite eating a good diet. And they are the ones who just might have the apolipoprotein B gene - a gene that predisposes them to all these conditions.

This is a great book for people who fit this profile. Matthew Bayan's description of his own heart attack is a powerful incentive to do something about the risk of a heart attack. He explains why his attempts to eat a low fat, low cholesterol diet only increased his cholesterol. If these people don't eat some cholesterol in their diet, their bodies will produce a great quantity of cholesterol on their own. Unfortunately, not all physicians know about the apoB gene and it`s significance on diet. But this book will provide enough information to help the informed patient to communicate better with his physician.

So no, if you thought this was a book saying it's okay to eat a fatty diet, it's not. It's a very sensible person's journey through the medical maze back to health - which just might help about 20% of the population.

I read this book after I had a heart attack. Like the author, my first heart attack was ignored by the hospital doctor and I was sent home. It was only after the third one that I was referred to a cardiologist, who had me flown to a hospital by air ambulance for angioplasty, which opened up the 90% clogged right main artery.

You need to read this book if you have any family history of heart disease, stroke or diabetes, even if you follow a healthy lifestyle, exercise and watch your diet. This book is not about eating fat, its about newer, more accurate blood tests that can find risk factors that standard tests do not.

Since reading and following this book, I have dropped my triglycerides from 700 to 66 and my cholesterol from 230 to 146. My waist has gone from 38 to 34. I still need to raise my HDL from 35 and lower my lipoprotein (a), which I will do with niacin and more exercise.

The air ambulance cost me $9500, the angioplasty $17,000 and the emergency room, hospital stays and rehab another $10,000. I still get angina from time to time. I will always face the prospect of restenosis. It will be cheaper for you if you buy the book.

This book has some good parts, particularly the autobiographical stories. But it would be foolish to generalize from such individual and subjective experience. Mr. Bayan is a man with a cause.

A moving description of a very personal journey. Matt Bayan's decision to take control of his life and his health (with his cardiologist's help) is inspiring. His ability to translate medical material into terms a layperson can understand makes the book quite readable, despite its technical focus. He has a very important story to tell, and he tells it with wit and clarity.

Most people interested or experiencing coronary heart disease will probably find this book useful. It is well and lively written, easy to follow and full of very practical self-tested and perhaps life-saving guidelines. One big plus of this book is that the author is not afraid of questioning the established medical dogmas, and at the same time is also able to see some merit in it as well, without thrashing it out altogether. My other comment is that it would benefit to have more thoroughly quoted scientific references, the way for example Atkins has done; for example in the chapter where the author strongly criticizes dr.Ornish' diet for failing or being outright harmful in large fraction of cardiac cases (quotes 5,15-30 or even 41%) due to genetic factors, the scientific reference is provided (LBL, U of Ca, page 59) but is unfortunately untraceable. This is quite important as the author's statement is in strong contradiction to Ornish's own claim of his diet being good for almost everybody. There are several inaccuracies in this book. For example, the author has correctly noticed that a diet high in fats is known to improve the lipid panel in almost all cases, especially by increasing HDL and reducing supposedly harmful LDL-B, unfortunately on page 60 while recommending unsaturated fats he at the same time suggests to avoid saturated fat without providing any scientific evidence backing such a claim (which of course there exist none but it is another story...). The author does not mention that not only there is no evidence to support the notion that natural saturated fats are supposed to be bad, at the same time there is no mention of studies pointing to possible health hazards (e.g. cancer, blood clotting alteration) from eating the very fat that he recommends - polyunsaturated vegetable oils. In terms of dietary recommendation as per title of the book, that is to eat fat, it stops at 30% calories, which is sort of half-way through and falls short of what other non-conventional doctors advocate as a true high fat diet. In fact at 30% it should still be classified as a high carb low fat diet, since human metabolism switches to the true high fat regime only after exceeding 50% (optimum is 60-80%) by calories. This might perhaps explain why the author had to resort to using drugs to further improve his lipid profile. This book raises also more questions than answers, which is good! For example: it is still unclear whether the lipid anomalies are the causes or the symptoms (caused by some unknown factor), some studies indicate one some other the second possibility. Also it is highly unlikely, contrary to the author's suggestion, that a genetic defect which kills men in their 40-ties would have persisted in the population in such a high percentage as 1 out of 4 or so. It is probably more likely that the real cause is in food or environmental while genetics may be simply making those people more susceptible to the real (as yet unknown) agent of the disease. In spite of the above comments I would recommend this book. Last but not least, I firmly believe that the book would have been hugely enhanced had the author expanded upon the statement on page 87 ("I _choose_ to come back here.").

A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free

Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.

In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.

I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!

I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.

All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.

After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.

Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!

Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.

I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.

The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.

I bought this book thinking it would be of great help to me. I found it to be absolutely useless. There are so many other valuable tools to use and informative books out there that I can only say - use your common sense - you know what you can and can't have & all you have to do is ask the server to check in the kitchen to make sure that thee either isn't, or won't be, any gluten ingredients used. I live very near NYC and I can name so many gluten free restaurants that weren't included that it's ridiculous. Don't waste your money.

This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!

After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!

I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities

"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.

The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.

It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.

Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.

Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.

I have to say that I was a bit set back when I received this booklet,The Official Pocket Guide for Diabetics. I was expecting something a bit more helpful for someone who had just been diagnosed with Diabetes.
I suppose that it is ok, but would not recommend paying more than a couple of dollars for this product.
I wound up going to another bookstore and purchasing a much more concise and helpful book.

**** I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already.

A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The "H" stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ("L" stands for a problem with "Learning" instead of a problem with "Hyperactivity".) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D.

This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying "Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!" I may be a "reviewer" but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future!

This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass!

The chapters include:

Going Through The Open Door

The First Step Toward Changing Your Diet
What Should You Eat?

The Importance of Detoxifying

When I first looked at this book at the bookstore I thought, Great,,my son has ADHD and was looking for a change in his diet to help. However the book just barely skims any one topic with a paragraph or two if you're lucky on anyone subject and has no depth to it at all. If you're just looking for the tip of the iceburg this is it. There is nothing more than an overview to any subject when it comes to amounts, dosages for supplements or nutrients and the amount needed. About half way through I quit reading it since it was of no help other than a broad spectrum overview. The Myth of Learning Disabilities..etc..by Robin Pauc I think, was much better at first glance and actually had dosages for supplements to know where to start and why this or that would help brain function etc. Hope this helps.

I have ordered this book 3 times - for myself, for my MIL, and for a friend. We all agree it's easy to read; has good, practical information; offers flexibility to try some food you love in small amounts or rarely instead of a rigid NEVER again! We find this book easy to use for quick reference, too. The information in the book has made all of our lives better as we've taken many of the suggestions to modify our diets or the way we cook some foods.

If you have Crohn's, IBS, or other bothersome gut problems, I think this is the most useful book to have on your bookshelf. This is the book I return to repeatedly.

Although this book does not focus on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) exclusively, this is an excellent book for IBS sufferers to start with when trying to ease their symptoms through dietary restrictions. Not only does "Eating Right" give a fairly thorough list of possible "trigger" foods, but it also includes an important chapter on how to supplement a restricted diet with vitamins. Whenever I have a question on what I should or possibly should not eat, I take a look at "Eating Right" to create a baseline. It's a book that can be used over and over again as a reference. It's definitely worth it.

In this book, Dr. Scala, a leading nutiritionist, provides diet and nutrition information so that people with IBD can help themselves find relief and achieve better health. The author has designed a drug free food and lifestyle program which includes: developing a personal testing program to identify foods that aggravate, cause or relieve flare-ups; "safe foods" and tips on reading labels; total fitness and stress reduction techniques; food allergies (including lactose, alcohol, and sugar intolerance); IBD and children; and recommended vitamin supplements. Recommended for folks who need clear instructions to develop their own dietary program. A useful book!

Dr. Scala is well known as an arthritis expert and in my opinion, he should have stayed in that arena. I have never read a book referring to Inflammatory Bowel Disease in its title that said less about the disease! This is basically a nutrition book, which is fine, but why market it as something specific about colitis and Crohn's? This seems purposely misleading to me and the blasé attitude toward sufferers of these diseases does not induce a close read of the material. Not necessary to purchase.

This book is commonly recommended by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, but I didn't think it was very good. The observations were haphazard, and some sounded like the author was making them up as he went along. He has a kind of puppy-ish enthusiasm, but he goes off half-cocked a lot. It's also full of repetition. There are much better books out there, both on nutrition and on these illnesses.

The book, greatest purchase that you can have. It has helped out in the balance of food that can be eaten, it's simple to follow and it even stastes good. I have always had a problem with what to cook for myself, that is the toughest part about a diabetic. With this book you are watching the sugar intake, the acid intake and more. I do wish there were more recipes to choose from that are just as good as these. I want to thank Dr. Young and his wife for doing all the research and providing everyone with facts. I have been a diabetic for 22 years and the change in my food without the acid is unreal to believe. This was a blessing for me. Thank you so much.

I LOVE this plan. Its an excellent idea and I felt 1000% better after the first three days and then tried to eat something that was not on the plan and was flooded with a headache, and body pains like crazy.
I gave the book 4 stars because I would like a "Menu" plan . . . suggestions to eat this for breakfast, this for a snack and this for lunch etc. He gives really great information, just not how to combine foods so you don't feel hungry. The recipes in the back are excellent, but I wish they were better "catagorized", such as this is what you eat for balancing PH, this is what you eat when you are done balancing your PH etc. I would see a recipe that I would like to try and only read from their "reward" that it was a transitional recipe.
I have recommened this book to several of my diabetic friends. I have had EXCELLENT sugar levels using the diet and my asthma has improved dramatically!

All persons who are diabetic, whether Type 1 or Type 2, or pre-diabetics ("impaired fasting glucose", meaning, BG readings from 110 - 126) like me, want to lead normal lives, eat "normal" things, be lethargic, and go about their business without regard to their BG readings. To place ourselves in such an arena, we all want a magic pill which will make us fit in with the lifestyles of 5/6th of the U.S. population. Unfortunately, no one has found such a pill, even though more and more books are written about the virtues of more and more pills, and new and improved dietary supplements.

Before I review this book, I must first give you a mini-review of The Acid Alkaline Food Guide, by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr., Squareone Publishers, © 2006. This book gives a much more concise and better description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system "in balance". pH means "potential for hydrogen", a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are "acid based". The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) - a reading of 7.0 is neutral.

Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth.

The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. Dr. Brown lists about 70 pages of foods we eat, and rates them according to whether the food is alkaline-forming or acid-forming. The first time I read through the list, I determined that I could not eat any food without running the risk of forming more acids in my system. To remedy this, Dr. Young would have me become a vegetarian, but Dr. Brown has an easier solution: eat more dark green vegetables than any other food group. She doesn't require me to give up meat or eggs or nuts, so long as 2/3rd of my plate contains foods that are alkaline-forming (such as kale, collard greens, asparagus, snap green beans, etc.).

Dr. Brown explains the basis for her conclusions. Our bodies have 3 methods of getting rid of unwanted "poisons", or acid forming chemicals, all of which are filtered through our bodies:

First, our lungs supply our bodies with much needed oxygen (as we breathe in), and dispel (exhale) carbon dioxide (the "burned" waste from our system - an inference might be made that aerobic exercise helps cleanse our system, because it requires lots of heavy breathing, which gives us a double dose of oxygen; in turn the CO2 expels the oxidized stuff we don't need);

Second, our kidneys filter unwanted sugars, and other waste products which we don't need (we rid our systems through urine - a preventative measure we can take is to drink lots of pure, and hopefully ionized or ozone rich water, which will keep our kidneys healthy, as well as supply needed oxygen to our systems); and

Third, our skin filters out other things, through our perspiration (which is also produced through exercise).

With this background in mind, we can have a better understanding of what Dr. Young advocates in his book. He noticed the correlation between acid based systems and diabetes, and concluded that if our systems are neutral, or slightly alkaline, our blood sugars would be "normal". As I have been checking my pH balance every morning, which I do before checking my BG reading, I can generally predict what my BG readings will be. If my system measures 7.0, which is neutral, my BG readings are pretty good (98 to 107). If my pH balance is 6.5, my BG readings will be higher (113, 114).

Although Dr. Young's book does not explain the chemistry involved in the process, he nonetheless makes a very persuasive argument that by eating lots of green vegetables, and drinking pure water mixed with green powder (the "green drink"), diabetics can improve their BG readings. Throughout the book, there are very interesting testimonials, given by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics; all of them reported a marked improvement in their BG readings - once they began drinking green drinks, stopped drinking carbonated beverages, and changing their eating habits.

The "green drink" is simply a mixture of oxygenated water (which can be produced with an ozone machine, or by adding sodium chlorite drops to pure water) and a teaspoon of green drink powder (which is nothing more than powdered, ground vegetables). I usually have two drinks a day, instead of an extra cup of coffee in the morning and a Diet Coke in the afternoon (which I have now given up).

Dr. Young also requires us to exercise. He prefers aerobic exercise to anaerobic exercise. I have no quarrel with his observations, especially since I have a better understanding of the benefits of having more oxygen pumped through my lungs. Oxidation is a good thing as far as I am concerned, because it neutralizes unwanted hydrogen ions and other viruses. As a side note, I have switched from the treadmill to an elliptical trainer, which gives me a better, complete body workout in less time.

Half of Dr. Young's book consists of recipes, which are all vegetarian in nature. We have not tried any of them, for a number of reasons. First, Dr. Young assumes that food budgets are unlimited, even for those of us who do not live in California. Thus, we cannot eat avocados three or four times a day. Second, the ingredients used in the recipes (even by California standards) are very expensive.

As I am writing this review, I can report that my pH readings do bear some correlation with my BG readings. When my pH is 6.5, my BG readings are a bit higher than when my pH is 7.0 or higher. Because of the changed variables (new exercise regimen, taking 2 green drinks a day, watching my intake of fatty foods, eating more green vegetables), I cannot isolate one component as causing the improvement in my BG readings.

It would be wonderful to learn that an adjustment to our diets could rid us of the need for insulin, metformin, Avandia, and other such drugs. None of the books I have reviewed suggest that we remain idle - all of the authors want us to exercise regularly (which may turn out to be the most important component of all - a recent report indicated that the best preventative for Alzheimer's Disease was to do 3 hours of aerobic exercise a week - oxygen is needed in your brain, you know).

Dr. Young's book is worth owning. Before you purchase this recommended book, I suggest that you consider reading other resources on ph balances.

A Vital New Program to Prevent, Treat, and Reduce High Blood Pressure by Julian M. Whitaker is an extremely easy to follow guide on hypertension, its reasons and effect on our body. The traditional medical establishment has very little clue as to what causes and what to do about many diseases. But, here the author knows his subject very well and is an expert in making the layman understand what he has to tell. Every person who is suffering from hypertension should read this book and their next visit to their doctors will be more enlightening.

After reading this book I have decided to give up my coffee habit and I was fortunate enough to find out a find a wonderful tasting replacement made from soyabeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower my cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will effect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it. I am sure, once you try this out, you too will never go for your normal coffee.

Things your doctor never told you

Your doctor may have never told you that most blood pressure medicine is dangerous, that for some people, reducing salt intake and drinking more water is as effective as diuretics and much safer, and that in most cases hypertension is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. This information, and much more, is backed up by 28 pages of references.
I have followed some of the guidelines for about two weeks and have already seen a decrease in both my systolic and diastolic pressures. I have not yet started eating tofu, and have not given up beef, but am reducing salt intake, choosing complex carbs over simple sugars, and eating fruit rich in potassium, calcum and magnesium. Some of the recommended changes are difficult, some are refreshing.
This book is intended for people who are "proactively involved in their health...and highly motivated to modify their diets and make other lifestyle changes..." It's not for everyone. It calls for changing eating habits and exercising regularly, as well as reducing stress. But even if one does not follow the book's advice to a tee, they can probably benefit from it.
I recommend Reversing Hypertension to anyone who needs to reduce their blood pressure, doesn't want to risk taking medicines that can be more dangerous than hyertension ,and is willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

This book is a wealth of information whether you chose to follow it or stay within the conventional medical system. At the absolute least this book provides information to allow you to be in charge of your 'own' health care on this important issue. A best it can provide you with a safer and healthier natural alternative to unsafe and ineffective medications. I have bought 4 copies of this books and given it to people I care about.

This book seems be based on research done by other doctors who do not own a supplement company.
I bought this book because I could not get good advice on supplements from my doctor.
The advice is very good, although copied, but the supplement advice points the reader toward the Whitaker Institute, which seem to do more research on how to sell vitamins for more moeny than research on curing heart disease
The supplements sold by Dr. Whitaker's company are much higher priced than the exact same supplements sold by other reputable supplement comapanies like Puritan's Pride, The vitamin Shoppe, Swansons vitamins etc.
I prefer other books on this subject sold by amazon, particulary one written by Dr. Houston, who runs a hospital research institute and does not own a supplement company.
I find it hard to believe the advice on supplements from a man who is charging triple prices for the supplements that he reccomends in his book.

This is an absolutley "terrible" book. It first tells you what the Mediterranean Diet was many years and and how it is so helpful - THEN it tells you how to make bread with WHITE ALL-PURPOSE BREAD FLOUR. WHAT A STUPID BOOK. Then it goes on to tell you how to update the diet with new technology learned over the last century. THAT IS NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR SHOULD BE DOING = THEY SHOULD BE TELLING YOU WHAT THE DIET "WAS" NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR THINKS IT SHOULD BE. And as an added "insult" they tell you to stop smoking. Do you think the Mediterranean"s "Smoked". Of course, and they were living longer than anybody on earth. What arrogance.

This is a diet that the average person can live with and lose weight with for the rest of their lives. It isn't fast but steady, you're not hungry and you can have veggies and fruits, and pastas, chicken & fish. And occassionaly dessert and red meat. I only wish there were more sample menues or more about portions. I am losing weight at about 2 or 3 lbs. weeks and I love it!

Not for people raised in the deep south and who have limited access to the ingredients in the receipes. Instead of buying this book just do what the doctors are always telling you. Cut down or out on red meat and eat more vegetables. Substitute fish or fowl in place of the red meat. Also do as the Apostle Paul said in the Bible, "take a little wine for thy stomach's sake". Then get out and walk more.

I love the food. I never realized there were so many different Herb and spices and what they were for. I always used Garlic salt instead of real Garlic. I replaced our regular salt with sea salt. Our cooking oil is now extra virgin olive oil. I am not only enjoying great food but healthier meals and I feel great.

My family has a history of type 2 diabetes, so I wanted to know how to avoid becoming a diabetic. This book in addition to the other books especially Live Right 4 Your Type have been excellent resources to help me understand my genetic hertitage. I am an O blood type, secretor. I am amazed at how much more energetic and powerful I feel now that I have been utilizing the diet for a year now. I rarely feel fatigued now. I have increased muscle mass. Best of all, now that I have eliminated wheat products, dairy and corn from my diet, I do not have anymore cramping/pain in my colon.

I know that avoiding the 'avoid foods' is difficult. It was for me too; I had been eating a goblet of ice cream every night before going to bed and I loved OREO cookies. As we get older (I'm 40 now) however we need to leave such childish eating behavior behind us if we want to be healthy and this book is the best resource I have read to date. If you are overweight and/or diabetic and you want take eating action to solve your health condition this book is a start. I also would highly recomend working with a doctor who is IjHI (Institute for Human Individuality) Certified. These doctors specialize in treating diabetes and other preventable health conditions with this diet. These doctors are not cheap but worth every penny if you value your health. Doctors not certified are simply unaware of treatments that can solve someones diabetic condition, so they prescribe what they know short term solutions (drugs).

I love being in control of my health, my kids do too. It's not easy or cheap, but it's worth it. If you solve the problem, you live life with joy; If treat the symptoms only, you live life with agony.

I bought this book as a naive, newly-diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic last December. My experience with it has been significantly negative. The basic dietary premise that a diabetic should consume 50-60 percent of their daily diet from carbohydrates, just doesn't pass a sanity test. The very idea that I'm supposed to control my blood glucose by eating mostly foods that seriously elevate blood glucose is not eating away diabetes; it is eating your way into higher blood glucose. I had to abandon this eating plan early on, and have found a better solution.
Look carefully at the glowing reviews; many were written by other "professionals."

the book was easy reading with some interesting facts.
But...the recipes were not very palatable. I gave the muffins I baked to the birds because they tasted like bird food and the rest of the dishes I tried to feed to the dog.
I do not recommend this book. There are more out there with more information about diabetes and better recipes.

Easy to understand advice about diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a national epidemic. Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, are necessary to prevent complications (heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, blindness) in those with Type 2 diabetes and prevent the disease from occurring in those at high risk. Medical advice regarding diet often leaves patients confused and therefore unable to follow their advice. Kristine Napier defines Type II diabetes and the steps needed to control this disease in a way that is easy to understand. She provides advice and examples to help the reader incorporate her guidelines into their everyday life. Her 28 day guide of menus will help those get started and as always, Kris's recipes are easy to follow and delicious. Last, but not least of importance, is that all of Kris's advice is based on scientific evidence and conforms to national guidelines.

Highly recommended for EVERYONE desiring good health!

Eat Away Diabetes is extremely well researched and superbly written! Taking complex subject matter, the author uses practical explanations and analogies, thereby making diabetes much easier to understand. The information is current and extremely useful for people with Type 2 diabetes and those working to prevent this potentially devastating (but preventable) disease. Numerous charts and sidebars are used throughout which serve as excellent references in my practice as a registered dietitian. The author emphasizes the importance of exercise at length and explains the roles of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and herbs. Ms. Napier also provides 28 days of menus and their accompanying recipes (which are healthy, creative, and tasty). This book will remain a useful resource in my professional practice and daily life! Thank you, Kristine Napier!

Kristine Napier is obviously an authority on diabetes as well as a nutritionist-- and we could probably cure a national epidemic (Type 2 diabetes) if we would all follow the advice in this book. But this isn't like one of those health books that preaches all kinds of impossible advice. It's filled with really simple recipes. The ones I've tried are easy to make, and taste delicious. It's food for kids as well as adults. At last, we've got a book on the kitchen shelf that we can trust completely.
