While it will probably get swept under the rug as just another fad, "The Insulin-Resistance Diet--Revised and Updated" is actually really well written. Within the first 30 pages, they've explained the what and why, and are already offering suggestions on how to improve your diet. As I checked this out from the library, I wasn't able to try any of the recipes, but the image of the seesaw to balance carbs with protein stuck with me - I see it in my mind's eye every time I sit down to eat. The premise is simple and very easy to incorporate into any eating habits - no matter how on-the-go.

Easy to understand and follow.

The Insulin Resistance Diet is very easy to read, understand, and follow. After getting the book I began reading first and then my "official" start date was June 1st, 2008. According to my doctor's scale, I lost 4 lbs in the exactly two weeks between my last visits. That's about 2 lbs. per weeks, which is a good rate according to my doctor. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, insulin resistance, as well as a family history of diabetes. I wanted to break the cycle of high and low blood sugar level spikes before my pancreas is used up!

Once you understand how your body reacts when you consume different types of food, and learn to recognize the different types, it is easier to eat out at restaurants, parties, and at home. The biggest changes for me is just finally feeling better, as well as recognizing true hunger signs for the first time that I can remember. I eat every 2-3 hours, always combine protein with any carbs... I will feel hungry 2-3 hours after eating, but not the extremes that I would feel before. I can even prepare meals and have started my whole family on the same healthy foods that I eat.. no more preparing two separate meals.. besides, I do not want my sons to get diabetes either.

Try this... for the $15-16.. how much better you will feel is worth the price.

after 7 months: steady weightloss and better overall health

Over the past 7 months of this diet, I have lost 20-25 pounds. It took me about 2 years to put that on. The last few months of that process, before I started this diet, I felt terrible: I was depressed, I had low energy, and I experienced constant sugar cravings.

After getting the book and starting to follow the guidelines, I quickly felt an improvement in my mood and overall health. The weight loss came much more slowly, and at first I wasn't even aware of it. A few months ago I reviewed this book and stated that, while I had not lost dramatic amounts of weight, I did feel much better. That still holds true. Also, I got blood tests done recently, and compared to the ones a year ago, they were much better.

If I had any advice, though, it would be to take everything about the book very seriously, not just he dietary instructions part. Balancing carbs and protein is just the beginning: an overall change in lifestyle eventually becomes necessary, and that takes realizing that you have to dedicate more attention to your body and give it what it needs, even if it doesn't want it--exercise, more vegetables, etc.

I was impressed by the ship time. In fact, I received
the book in less time than was estimated. So, good job
on that. However, when I recieved the book, I found
that 10 pages had been torn out, of a pivotal section of
the book, the section dealing with diet and control.
The reason that I ordered the book to begin with. I
know that you can't read every book that you have, but,
this left me with a book that was useless.

I recently found out that my sugar was high during a routine visit to my doctor.

They wanted to put me on medicine but I refused beliving that they had make a mistake with my test.

After reading this book I decided to buy a glucose meter and test it myself. The results really scared me and I was determined to bring the levels down. This book gave me hope that Diabetes can be reversed or at least controlled without medicine.

I am thankful that I chose to read this book and was enlightened by all of the valuable infomation that it contained.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been diagnosed, I consider it a lifesaver.

Thank you,

Required Reading for understanding diabetes' solutions

This book provides a good diabetic solution and it should be read by non-diabetics to help them understand what is going on within the food industry. It should probably be read in conjunction with the classic "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine," edited by E. Braunwald & colleagues and "Alternative Medicine: The definitive Guide," edited by Larry Trivier, Jr. . The latter provides a simple but good overview of the subject of alternatives. More details about alternatives are best understood be reading Daniel Reid's "The Complete Book of Chinese Health and Healing" and "The Science of Homeopathy," by George Vithoulkas. The former provides a thorough description of the comprehensive and thoughtful emphasis on individual wellness of Chinese medicine while the latter provides the paradigm shift necessary to understand today's modern healthcare system.

It was only through Bernstein's book that I was able to appreciate the importance of maintaining a low carbohydrate diet if I were to ever achieve "normalized" blood glucose and hope to avoid the long term complications associated with the disease. Bernstein, first trained as an engineer, later as an M.D., offers a wonderful "nuts and bolts" approach to maintenance of diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. His standard of control set the bar high where, in my opinion, it needs to be. I wish that my Father, who died of diabetes complications, had been privy to his approach and had available to him the instant test methods for blood glucose that are now available.

This book was a wellspring of information for me as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Getting off the cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, seeing my blood glucose spike from doing just what I was told, and getting medications increased again and again, I read what Dr. Bernstein said with interest. After trying his recommendations I can say with no reservations that this book may have saved my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes and hope that the general medical community opens their eyes. After only one day of this diet my blood glucose readings were close to normal, and continue to stay there, with less medication. My energy levels are high and I have felt better than I have in a long long time. Kudos to you Dr. Bernstein, for daring to say the truth! I recommend both his books and also Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution to anyone who wants to learn about diabetes and diet.

I have done a lot of research on diabetes at the library and on the internet after I was diagnosed Type 2 in Aug 2007. I saw the dietician/nutritionist recommended by my doctor and also real a ton of information on the internet and many books from the local library. My fasting blood sugar when I was diagnosed was 311. I was able to get it down to 110 - 120 level after dieting, exercising, and eating the things recommended by the dietician. My problem was my levels were erractic up and down even when eating the same diet.

I saw Dr. Bernstein's book was highly recommended by Amazon readers, so I took the chance and bought the book. After reading that a diet of high proteins and very, very low carbs would help stabilize my blood sugars, I decided to try it. To my amazement, I started gettings readings in the mid 80's and the levels stopped spiking up and down. Carbs were my problem. Dr. Bernstein recommends an ideal reading of 83 and that is now my target.

This book should be a must read for all diabetics, both Type 1 and Type 2 people. My motto is "you can die from diabetes or learn to live with it," and I chose to learn to live with it. This book is a great learning tool and coupled with exercise (including weight training), weight loss and proper diet, you can control what happens to your body. It worked for me with results immediately.

Highly, highly recommended. If you have a friend or relative with diabetes, BUY this book for them. The author (Dr Berstein) is still a practicing physcian specializing in diabetes treatment. He is also a Type 1 diabetic. Dr Berstein's experiences lead to this book being published. It should be required reading for all diabetics.

Good For Diabetics Too!

To address the reviewer below, plant-based nutrition works for diabetics too! The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle: Lifestyle Center of America's Complete Program to Stop Diabetes, Restore Health, and Build Natural Vitality. And if you're concerned about prostate cancer, you have yet another reason to go plant-based.Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer, Second Edition

According to Dr. Esselstyn, it takes about three or four weeks, and possibly a little cholesterol-lowering medication, to essentially "heartattackproof" yourself. Along with fruits, vegetables and whole grains, beans are a critical element for this way of dealing with heart disease. Beans provide a good source of arginine, the raw material needed to make nitric oxide, a gas produced by the endothelial cells that line our cardiovascular systems. Nitric oxide keeps arteries flexible, and everything in the blood flowing smoothly. To use Dr. Esselstyn's analogy, flowing like teflon, instead of like velcro.

My father, grandfather, and great grandfather, all died young from heart attacks, my father being the youngest at 42. For most of my life, I didn't put that much stock in nutrition. ( Although I had a mother who did! ) Until my runnning took a bit of a hit in my mid-forties, I thought being fit was much more important than what I ate. I no longer think that way!

I would encourage anyone who's on the fence about this, to attend one of Dr. Esselstyn's speaking engagements. If that's not possible, order the 2005 Vegsource DVD's. I was so impressed with his presentation from 2005, that in 2006 I spent three days on a bus to meet him ( and others ) in person, in California.

While things were running a little behind in 2006, cutting his presentation a bit short, near the end Dr. Esselstyn had a man he'd met in a taxi at this conference join him on stage. His testimonial added an interesting "alternative perspective" that the reviewer below seemed to think was missing from the book. ( Also, I think the 2006 DVD's capture Dr. Joel Fuhrman at his best. )Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss

The review below also mentions how much of the book is recipes. Ann Esselstyn's large volume of very original recipes serve to emphasize the broad range of food choices available for defeating heart disease.

If you do have the opportunity to hear Caldwell Esselstyn speak, and to pose a question, ask about niacin instead of Lipitor. At least one other reviewer brought that up, and I'm sure Dr. Esselstyn is always looking for ways to tweak his lectures.

I came acroos this book after reading a commentary from the Health Ranger on the sudden heart attack of NBC's Anchor of Meet The Press. I followed that link to this book and bought it on Amazon.com . I am now buying one for my daughter. I have read this book and looked though the recipes and asked myself...Gosh, can I really do this diet or should I say lifestyle change? But, then I realized, it is not how can I give up my many beloved foods, but rather, I must give up killing myself slowly but surely.
The recipes in this book, of the few I have tried so far, are really tasty , much to my surprise. Who knew Almond milk could taste so good?
I do not think I could have even started this change in what I eat without the many recipes included in this book. Having gone organic now for almost a year this is now my next step. The hard part will be getting my husband on board. But I am easing him into it.
I even called Dr. Esselstyn and he personally called me back to answer any questions I had. Now that is one very caring doctor. So all you out there in cyberspace, lets start getting healthy, because the way things are going none of us will be able to afford to get sick even with insurance. This at least gives us a fighting chance. I highly recommend this book. It is a good truthful look at how what we eat will effect us and it is an easy to read book that is motivational, answering the questions in the next chapter that you are asking youself in the chapter prior. I am thankful to have found this book and hope the rest of you find it to be as good as I do. Good health, good food, good heart.

My family has a history of heart disease. My brother and I have both been dealing with high blood pressure over the last few years. Although our BP is controlled with 3-5 prescription medications, we both want to see if we can get off of them ASAP. My brother read the book and started on the recommended diet about 3 months ago. He has lost more than 40 pounds and cut back on his medications. I started on the diet several weeks ago and have already lost 15 pounds and cut my medications. We both feel good and hope to cut our medications even more.

We both ate "healthy" foods and exercised regularly before starting the diet. We didn't start the new diet to lose weight, since neither of us was overly heavy. The diet can be difficult at times (traveling, restaurants, etc.), but the book provides some good hints on how to cope with such issues. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to truly change their health and is willing to change their lifestyle to do it. The recipes are great!

While the possibility of reversing all the damage done to your vascular system over time is quite exciting, the diet is so rigorous that even if it doesn't actually make you live longer, it will seem like it, LOL. No denying that the average American's diet is not healthy, but Dr. Esselstyn's diet allows only vegetables, fruits, and grains, period, with no deviations allowed, ever.

One serious flaw in the book is that everything is written through Dr. Esselstyn's perspective. There is not one anecdotal account written by one of his patients providing testimony of how this diet has improved their life. And, there is the issue noted by others that over half of the book is recipes. He also does not address how diabetics should use his diet. Although it may be argued that you will lose so much weight and correct bad body chemistry so that type II diabetes will no longer be an issue, but the fruit and grains are carbs.

So, with Americans' penchant for quirky diets, why isn't this sweeping the land? For me, I may be in denial, but I don't think I'm sick enough, yet, to do this. It's almost as though Dr. Esselstyn touts this as such a miracle cure that one can start on it the day the need for a coronary bypass is identified and not have to proceed with the surgery.

It so happens that I was reading Chapter 5, "Moderation Kills", in PREVENT AND REVERSE HEART DISEASE by Esselstyn when I learned of the recent, untimely death of TV news host, Tim Russert, In this chapter, Esselstyn explains why the standard 'moderate' cardiac regiman as prescribed for Russert often is associated with sudden death - and why such death is preventable.

I was drawn to the monograph because, at age 74 and free of cardiac symptoms, a plaque was demonstrated in a major coronary artery when I had a Coronary Artery Calcium Score/GE determined. My score of 460 was abnormally high -- and compares with the abnormal score of 210 received by Tim Russert in 1998 at age 48: [...]
Now, based on the wealth of clinical and epidemiologic evidence nicely presented and using the practical notes to food sources offered on pages 289 to 299, my wife and I are choosing to embark on the Esselstyn diet.

BTW, a strict low fat diet was not among the options suggested by my cardiologist and I doubt if the choice were ever offered by the medical profession to Tim Russert.

I greatly appreciate Dr. Fuhrman's book and his willingness to step beyond the drugs and surgeries to show people that there is a better way to cure our modern diseases of affluence - let nature and the natural ability of our bodies help. This book contained a great deal of specific information on all the top killers and how they can not only be prevented but also reversed by stopping what we're did that caused them. It's a modern take on what we knew hundreds of years ago. Amazing. Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman.

I felt as if this book (and the writer) understood my life as a person devoted to foods who just so happens to have an allergy to gluten. Before reading this book, I felt alone in this disease. People seemed to have made the assumption that I was a freak who could not enjoy good eating. I believed them, that is, before I read this book.
If you are diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, please read this book! In it you will find:
-how to embrace life and food in a way that you never thought was possible again.
-how to find grains that are naturally gluten-free.
-the importance of sticking to a gluten free living if you are diagnosed with a condition that prevents you from eating gluten.
-where gluten can be hiding.
-and the kinship of someone who is undergoing the same problems you are.

I didn't need an exhaustive recipe list that contained gluten free dishes. That is something I could find at any natural food market store. No, what I needed was support. Previous to reading this book, being gluten free meant living a solitary life where I had to face food allergy issues alone. Just from reading this book, I regained my passion for food, and I found the gumption to ask for gluten free dishes at restaurants.

As a side note, someone wrote that her descriptions of food from her childhood was senseless, but I don't believe it was. From my perspective, she was comparing a life that did not have any food restraints to the life she leads now that does contain diet restrictions. Ironically, the life she lead when gluten was allowed did not satisfy her stomach or palate. Once gluten was nixed from her life, she found freedom in eating foods that she would have traditionally avoided. I don't think this makes her bratty. She found her food identity in an unexpected place, a place she would have never imagined: gluten-free living.

I have followed Shauna James Ahern's blog for over a year now. I heard her speak at the GIG conference in 2007 and was able to speak to her briefly. She's a genuine, engaging, and delightful person. So, I was anxious to read her book. My local bookstore didn't have a copy, so a friend loaned me hers and asked me to write any comments I had in the margin. (My friend was anxious to read my impressions.) I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance in 2003 after a lifetime of symptoms/illnesses. So, I found myself reading the book and saying aloud and writing in the margin, "Yes!", "That is so true.", etc. Shauna's journey to gluten-free parallels my own in that after years of numerous illness and many misdiagnoses I was absolutely thrilled to get a diagnosis. Like Shauna, once I got over the brief shock of what I could no longer eat, I focused on all the wonderful foods I could eat. I always tell folks that "real" food (think whole food) is naturally gluten free--meat, seafood, fruit, and veggies. Then there's even more food that's naturally gluten free (like most dairy) and one can make wonderful, simple recipes using GF ingredients. Shauna intersperses her fabulous recipes throughout her book. Her book is much like her blog--filled with honest, heartfelt storytelling and both a journal and a celebration of food and life. It's a quick, joyful read ... don't miss it!

I have been reading the author's website for a while, and pondering whether to get tested for celiac disease, as I have some of the symptoms. I got this book from the library, thinking it would have more information about the disease and practical information about diagnosis, lifestyle, et cetera.

This book is merely a rehashing of a lot of her longer blog posts. Some are word-for-word, verbatim. That's a lazy approach to writing a book. At some point, she looked at all her lengthy blog posts and thought, "I've got a book here!" No. No, you don't.

The flowery descriptions of food at some point got unbearable. Her snobbery regarding food and foodies is apparent, especially when she shuns a "thin, wan girl with no discernible personality" (apparently only those who wax poetic about food have personality) who simply states that she doesn't understand why people "talk about food all the time. It's just food." The author states that she and that girl had nothing to talk about after that. I would like to point out that a good sign of maturity is the ability to talk to others about what THEY are interested in, not reject them because they don't share your pet passion. I have friends who don't share my passion for homeschooling. I don't reject them.

This passage, more than any other, turned me against the author. It is a wonderful thing to be diagnosed, finally, with a crippling illness and to find the way back to health. And with celiac, it is clear that it is wonderful to find the treatment in the very thing that once made you sick. It is another to become so insular and snobbish that you look down on those who don't share your passion for, say, truffle salt or fine olive oils. For some people, yes, food is just food. I bet there are celiacs out there who look at food as fuel and get on with their lives.

The other passage (actually, it's a whole chapter) that was just cringe-worthy was the one describing her meeting her future husband. While I'm happy for them, and sure that they'll have a wonderful, blissful life together, this didn't need to be in the book. For me, it was way too personal and passionate; I felt as if i were reading a love letter she'd written to "The Chef" (which, sorry, pretentious. He has a name, right?) I felt like I'd been dropped into a Harlequin Romance, where people moan and giggle in the kitchen rather than the bedroom. Way too personal, and added nothing to my knowledge of celiac disease.

The passage at the very end, "Where does Gluten Hide" seems like an afterthought, plunked down after her ecstatic description of "the Chef's" proposal. It would have been better placed in the section about her diagnosis, or about gluten, for heaven's sake. It's like the editor got to the end and said, "Uh....what is gluten, again, and where can you find it?" And the author said, "Oh. Yeah. Let's get back to that aspect of my life."

Do not buy this book, unless you want an overly-personal, florid description one's relationship, with a big helping of snobbery. After reading it, I felt as though the author was presenting us with her ideal image of herself and her life, not the reality of living with celiac. She's "never" had the urge to eat a piece of bread? Or a slice of pizza? Wow. When I had to go on a low-fat diet for health reasons, even though I was told that eating too much fat could seriously harm my body, I sure was tempted. I found her superiority and snobbery hard to take.

I gave this book two stars for the recipes, which look interesting and worth trying. Without the recipes, it would have been one star.

Thanks to this incredible book, I turned my liver toxins reading from quite dangerous to perfect within 2 months. And I have lost over 10 kilos as an added bonus. The food is excellent and the information is easy to read and understand, this lady knows exactly what she is talking about. I am happy to stay on this diet because the recipes are so tasty and fulfilling. I just love the banana walnut muffins for lunch every day. If you want a healthier liver and to lose weight this book is for you. I am so impressed with it, I bought a few more for my family members.

A diet that loves your liver.

This book is not about some gimmicky diet to just lose weight - it's really about getting healthy and making decisions with your liver in mind. There is lots of nutritional information that explains why some foods are healing for the liver and how this ultimately helps the body to reach ones ideal weight. The book is a fast read and yet it is packed with good information.

IT WORKS!

The Liver Cleansing Diet Book

I had been feeling like crap, I weighed in at 145 lbs. Ok, some may say thats not alot, yet for me, it was as if I had 100 lbs. more on my body than needed. I was lethargic, disgusted and in need of a new wardrobe.. (normally I'm 115-118 lbs.@ 5.3 ft.)
Anyhow, I had been tested and found out my body had high liver enzymes along with high cholesterol. My Doctor gave me diets geared for for cholesterol and heart disease. (My Dr., knew nothing about the liver- the body's cleansing machine) I did a bit of research and came across Dr Cabot's, The Liver Cleansing Diet.
I was psyched, went on the diet to the exact specifications and did not stray.(honestly, its not easy at first, then again, there is no easy way out for losing weight or balancing chemicals)
All I know, is after 2 months I dropped half the weight I gained. After 6 months I dropped it all!
I had gone back to my Dr to be re-tested, my enzymes and cholesterol levels dropped back to normal, and my Dr. asked me how I did it. When I told him, he did not believe me. Oh-K, just to let you know, I switched Drs. since then.
During this time, I've never felt better in my life and I still keep healthy habits in mind at all times. Unfortunately, I have lent this book out and have had to re-order it because I never get it back. (to my friends; sorry, but from now on, buy your own book :)The Liver Cleansing Diet Book

This is a very good book. It basically shows you how to eat smart...without preservatives and all of the unneccesary things in your diet. I would highly recommend this book to everyone with chronic illness or weight issues.

SOME Good Advice

I bought this book out of complete desperation. I have suffered more than 20 years with chronic infections. I have done it all 2 sinus surgeries, allergy meds, allergy shots and home remedies. This book did provide some great education on diet tips, sinus irrigation, allergies and asthma. I think it is a great book if you are lost and are unaware of contributing factors. However, all these remedies have helped a little, but I still suffer terribly. So where to go from here??

I wish I had this info 25 years ago!

I have suffered from sinus infections all my life, 6 or more per year. Since I started following the information in this book, I have dropped to one or so per year. I highly recommend the sinus irrigation detailed in the book. I use a WaterPik and the nasal attachment for it. I wish I had known about this as a kid because I would not have wasted so much time being sick.

Honestly, I bought this book at a health food store, and not from Amazon. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, let me tell you that I would STRONGLY recommend this book. It had a good amount of information all in one place about allergies, asthma, and sinusitis. The nasal irrigation that is reccomended (one whole chapter) works very well, and has given me remarkable results that I did NOT get from just using salt water and a neti pot. There was some very helpful information here that I thought was well-reasoned and backed by evidence. Nothing crazy, just stuff that works. The most important thing, I have been suffering, and I feel so much better!! thanks!

Thrilled to know about other solutions besides antibiotics!

I am thrilled to have read this book and know that there are a whole spectrum of choices out there to try for sinus problems other than antibiotics! I have been a sinus sufferer for over 2 yrs. now with allergies causing sinus headaches, pressure and dizziness. Multiple courses of antibiotics have not completely helped and I decided to read and research what I can do to help myself and try solutions that the doctors I've seen have not been thorough about. This book has given me so much hope and I have tried several of the solutions - warm, moist compress, hot tea, drinking lots of water, papaya enzymes and Neti Pot. So far, so good, but I'm sure it'll take a few weeks to get into a routine. I have been so disappointed with some of the other reviews of this book accusing the writers of heavily promoting Grossan's Hydropulse irrigation system. In fact, the system only features in a small section of the book, and the book is SO much more than promotion, it gives a whole wide spectrum of suggestions and choices that one can try to help themselves. I would highly recommend this book to give yourself some hope and also the Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your Sinuses.

I purchased this book for a friend who had bypass surgery. I had previously read South Beach Diet and tried it out. I thought it was extremely informative and sensible. It definitely improved my weight and my overall health. I hope this book will help my friend make some needed changes in his diet and life style.

I HAVE NOT READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK YET, BUT HAVE MOST, IF NOT ALL, DR. AGASTON'S BOOKS ON SOUTH BEACH DIET & HAVE STUDIED NUTRITION OVER THE YEARS (ALOT) IT'S GREAT INFORMATION & IT SEEMS THE ONLY WAY TO DIET IS THROUGH NORMAL EATING WITH GOOD CARBS & LOW GI FOODS ADDING LOW FAT DAIRY (OR NONFAT) PLUS FRUITS, VEGGIES & WHOLE GRAINS PLUS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NUTS, SEEDS & LEGUMES. SO I AGREE WITH IT - NOW IF I COULD ONLY STICK TO IT FULL-TIME! I THINK IT'S ON TARGET INFORMATION & WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THANKS - STILL TRYING TO 'REVERSE'.

A very good book, almost excellent. It's nearly comprehensive and a great introduction for the middle-aged man to understand the cumulative negative implications of declining fitness and increasing inactivity. It's shortfalls are the limited examples of day-to-day sample menu's and the advantages of non-processed foods. Additionally, the chapter on exercising is a bit lame in this day of mens health, and widely distributed fitness, etc. Finally chapter summaries would help. Otherwise, well worth the investment and the read. For me, this book has been a great help for me to understand how to make an important mid-life change in direction to improve not only the quality of my life but also my longevity.

Lost 50 lbs with this and kept it off for five years running

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

A guide to stay away from the cardiac surgeon

Dr. Agatston book is a great story about the limitations of the current medical system, with emphasis on how heart disease is treated in the USA, and how we, collectively, could do a better job by improving the early diagnosis of heart disease. It encourages people to develop simple habits and follow treatment options that reduce the number of surgical interventions, as well as the number of cardiac events and deaths. It gives its readers the knowledge and tools to get going with these solutions. The typical doctor is not well prepared to diagnose heart disease early enough. Patients are well rewarded when they are proactive in prevention methods. Hospitals and many cardiologists often intervene to save patients when their lives are already compromised, but have no financial incentive to truly emphasize early prevention for the rest. Dr. Agatston found one: Educate the public by selling books. Given that heart disease is the number one killer, this one is worth it.

This is a very indepth book which describes in great detail the process by which the ketogenic diet occurs and how this impacts different individuals. It is very technical, yet extremely informative.

A very thorough resource

Review Date: 2007-07-05
This book is a remarkably thorough resource on low-carb dieting and its variants as applicable to those working towards a high level of fitness. By that I mean bodybuilders and other athletes. The rest of us are addressed and educated to a great degree with this book, as well.

The ketogenic diet as explained here is for those who can execute a plan with a high level of independence. There are no food lists, menus, recipes, or pep talk. Just the facts and the methods. There are workout routines, but there are no illustrations or explanations of the exercises. It is assumed that the reader already knows what, say, a deadlift is. If you can assemble the nuts and bolts for yourself, you'll have no need to examine any other low-carb approach (Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power) at length. You'll want the food lists and maybe recipes from such books, however. If you want the all-in-one deal with all that information, I believe the author recommends Protein Power by Drs. Eades.

It bears repeating: it is a very thorough and robust read with an academic tone. If you're interested in the nitty-gritty ins and outs spelling out the rationale of doing such a diet, it's here.

The approaches are in three flavors:

Standard ketogenic- eating low-carb all the time while doing nothing more than, say, walking for exercise
Targeted ketogenic- low-carb eating except before and after weight training only
Cyclical ketogenic- a few days of eating low-carb followed by a couple of days with higher carbs-rinse and repeat

For what it's worth-this book needs some editing, both in text and layout. Enough to notice, not enough to miss the message.

Strongly recommended for the purest of intentions, for those that can.

Precise and exhaustive

McDonald is a true scientist who has produced a wonderfully thorough and well-researched book.

The "true scientist" tag is important, for at least four reasons:
(1) This book contains no hype, pep talks, or unduly biased recommendations. It's also not a feel-good "collaborative" book that works with the reader to set goals; it assumes that readers will set, or have already set, QUANTITATIVE goals.
(2) It expects readers to comprehend, and think in terms of, QUANTITATIVE concepts like grams/%/calories of macronutrients, lbs/% of LBM, etc.
(3) It contains no recipes, convenience tips, or lifestyle advice, unless absolutely vital to the program (as with timing of workouts/carb-up in the CKD).
(4) Its text is concise, scientific, and QUANTITATIVE, and therefore rather dry.

If you're looking for an easy-to-read diet book that could potentially sell millions of copies in the aisles of grocery stores, look elsewhere. If you want a thorough volume with exact, QUANTITATIVE factual data, as well as honest discussion of the current state of knowledge regarding various aspects of the diet, this is the book for you.

Did I mention "quantitative"?

"You should also read www.c-k-d.com, particularly the forums."

The people over there generally do not like Lyle, due to the fact that he is not a product of his philosophy whatsoever - google him.

I tried this diet and it worked...to a point. I couldn't perform my work outs because I was so drained all the time. As soon as I resumed normal eating I gained back all the weight I had lost. Then, I just went crazy over carbohydrates for awhile and put on more weight than before, although some of it was muscle (which isn't too bad) since I continued working out. However, I'm still never as lean as I was BEFORE the Ketogenic Diet (I didn't do the CKD), and I was on Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (e-book).

The best resource you can find for this type diet. Actually, I do not consider it a diet but a way of life now. It is not hard to follow. All my questions were answered in this book, and some I did't even know I had.
