I purchased this book from the point of view of someone who cannot tolerate wheat gluten in my food. Unfortunately, I found this book to be completely worthless. As you can imagine, steak, potatoes and vegetables simply don't contain wheat gluten. If you are ordering onion rings, the batter may or may not contain wheat gluten so the book suggests asking the waiter. Few employees have read the ingredient list on the bag of batter or any other pre mixed ingredients.

The book recommends asking the waiter about potential gluten content for almost any food served in the restaurant. I prefer not to depend on a waiter who has 8 other tables to wait on, 3 dinners waiting to be delivered to 2 tables, who may not get along well with the cook and who may have had a fight with his wife before coming on duty - all of which affect his mood and judgment.

While the book contains typical ingredients contained in the Mexican recipes listed, Mexican food recipes differ from cook to cook - often even in the same restaurant. Again, the authors recommend asking the waiter if the foods contain certain ingredients.

Common sense is a far better guide than anything offered in this book.

Perfect for those with food allergies / specialized diets!

This book is the size of a passport and very organized and well written. The American Steak & Seafood and Mexican Cuisine Passport is perfect for making choices while traveling, or while dining at your favorite local restaurant.

This guide is extremely to use. It provides sample menus that you'd see at typical Steak & Seafood and Mexican restaurants. Then you are provided with descriptions of each dish and how it is prepared and the ingredients used. From there you are provided with specific considerations as to how the preparation or ingredient list may affect you if you have gluten or food allergy issues.

CFIDS, Fibromyalgia, And The Virus-Allergy Link provides new therapy for chronic functional illnesses, offering explanations of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue disorders and providing both a set of tests for hidden viral and allergic causes of these conditions and treatment options. Any who suffer from chronic fatigue will welcome this different approach and theory.

This book is awful! The author's style is impossibly difficult to read, the information presented is not sourced or footnoted adequately, and the editing is terrible. I would not recommend this book to anyone, but especially not to a layperson with CIFDS looking for help and information. Save your money and spend it on something else.

One of the worst allergy books I have read yet!!!

Review Date: 2003-06-21
This book should be titled "The Complete Waste of Your Money Allergy Book" because buying it would be a waste of money.

She seems to have gotten most of her information straight out of her medical books instead of looking at the real life allergy problems people go thru. For instance, she stated that many people just think they are allergic to a certain food, but when they get a skin prick test it is negative. I have a problem with that statement because I can have a reaction on my skin to squash when I am preparing it, but yet I can eat it without any problems. On the other hand, my son was skin tested for corn and it was negative, but whenever he ate any form of corn when he was young he would scream in pain and then after hours of crying he would have diarrhea with blood in it!!! Now I am not going to just take a doctors word for it that my son had no problem to a certain food when I see after several times that he bleeds from eating the food.

This book basically tells you all about what allergies do to your body and that you need to go to a doctor to get the drug for it. You can just go to the doctor and in person the doctor can tell you all about allergies and then give you the medicine without you having to buy this book and read it.

A better book to buy would be "The whole way to Allergy Relief and Prevention" by Jacqueline Krohn MD, Frances A. Taylor MA, Erla Mae Larson RN. Or any allergy books by Gary Null PhD. Also there are many websites with message boards you can go to and read about what other people are going thru and what they have done that has helped with their allergies. This book bothered me because the doctor who wrote it seems to be the type to say "It's all in your head" and just give you drugs then send you on your way. Thank you for reading my review, I hope it was helpful!!!

This book is a helpfull overview of food intolerances, with some helpfull information on how to eat/ change ones environment/ change ones life to minimize symptoms (such as rashes, headaches, etc.)

As the mother of a young child with excema, I found the tone of the book intollerable. It reccommends that ALL pregnant and nursing mothers avoid ALL common allergens. Common allergens according to Dick Thom: wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, pork, tomatoes, potatoes, all citrus, chocolate... maybe some others that I am forgetting. To cavalierly suggest this to persons who are not currently having serious allergy problems seems irresponsible. I found it telling that there was a long discussion of what formula to use if you could not produce enough milk when breastfeeding... this is a very uncommon problem, unless you are quite undernourished or overstressed. Trying to following his dietary restrictions would lead to both.

The Only Book of its Kind

Review Date: 2003-04-02
This is the only book in print that I know of that attempts to discuss allergies from the point of view of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and for that reason alone it is a valuable contribution. This book makes a valiant attempt to explain the theories of TCM as they relate to hayfever, in a way that laypeople can understand. I believe it succeeds. TCM can only be understood on its own terms, not in relation to Western allopathic or any other medical system. This book makes that point beautifully clear. All of the TCM theory in the book is solid and well-worded, including a very helpful glossary of TCM terms. Bob Flaws has written and translated numerous texts on TCM in his many years as a doctor of TCM.

If you suffer from hayfever, I can generally recommend implementing the advice in this book, much of which can be done by yourself. However, I take issue with the fact that little mention is made of adverse reactions to Chinese herbs, especially allergic reactions to the herbs, their constituents, toxins present such as fungicides sprayed on herbs when they are exported from China, pesticide residues, possible non-herbal additives, and even toxic packaging. Reactions to these things is on the rise, especially in the population of people with other allergies, such as food allergies. Chinese herbs are, of course, safer than Western pharmaceuticals, but they have their drawbacks and I have seen many patients with problems from "natural" and "herbal" remedies because of allergies to those remedies, or as is more often the case, to the fumigants and pesticides on the herbs and the plastic bottles some natural medicines are packaged in. I also am not sure that laypeople can safely learn to use such techniques as moxa, cupping, and plum blossom from a book alone. It is far better to get a hands-on lesson from a professional if you want to do these techniques yourself.

Despite his years of experience, and his own personal experience with allergies, Dr. Flaws does not really mention any way of actually "curing" hayfever, as the book title suggests. This book is all about harm reduction, about symptom management. To this end, the book is thorough and I'm sure the advice he gives is very effective. But it won't make you stop being allergic, which he claims is impossible. (It's not impossible!) As Bob Flaws makes clear, it is up to you to manage your own lifestyle in healthy ways and not to rely on doctors or experts to fix you. However, many people who do lead healthy lives and have tried a great deal of natural medicine still have allergies, and may still have symptoms that trouble them a little or a lot. Following the advice in this book will probably help a great deal, but may be only a starting point. There are TCM methods beyond the scope of this book that can help when the advice in this book is not enough, and when seeing an acupuncturist or herbalist is not enough, or actually makes the problem worse. The cure is possible within the system of TCM, but not through the methods in this book. The methods I'm referring are more esoteric, and beyond the scope of this book.

Though Dr. Flaws emphasizes that TCM is holistic (it is), there is little mention of spiritual causative factors or spiritual solutions to allergies. He advises the use of guided relaxation tapes, and that is as close as he gets to spiritual. There is much more to spiritual healing than relaxing your body. I understand that spiritual esoterica is really beyond the scope of this book, however, but spiritual esoterica of TCM is exactly where the real cure lies. TCM is holistic because it includes spiritual healing--without the spiritual element, it cannot be holistic.

This book also neglects the modern toxic world, beyond the mention of the hazards of diet soda. There are reasons why allergies have become so common, and for some, so severe. Many of the causes, be they spiritual and/or modern problems, are not addressed in this book. "Faulty diet, lack of adequate exercise, and too much stress," are causes of health imbalances in general, to be sure, but often really just aggravate a situation that already exists.

Many of the limits of this book are simply that the book is limited in scope. The concepts lacking may or may not be suitable for lay people, or may be beyond the understanding of Bob Flaws, who may be an expert on TCM but not necessarily an expert on allergies. On the other hand, the detailed herbal formulas, the acupoint-specific massage section, and the chapter on research are all fairly technical and even tedious, and may not be very helpful to laypeople either. All in all, the book is a good starting place, but not really about a "cure."

I can't fix my rating. I meant it to have three stars, not one. I live in the Denver area (altitude issues) but the author is from Louisvill (close by) but after following the recipe for the breads to the "t"; three timesI have gotten only dry bricks that look like brains. I am a good cook otherwise but admit that this gluten free baking is a new world for me. The almond waffels come out like crackers with little flavor, but the graham crackers came out gummy. The quinoa pancakes are really good but our sone won't eat them *arhhgg* ! I am ovbiously doing a lot of things very very wrong! For us, it has been an expensive waste of groceries for not much food results. It would help if the instructions were more in an outlined format instead of running paragraphs. I was really excited about this book because our son is alergic to rice, potatoes, corn as well as wheat and eggs. I wish she had a website or support call number for despirate people like me (I would even pay a fee for it).

Gluten-free baking is different than baking with wheat. Since gluten is what traps the leavening gases and causes bread to rise, gluten-free breads are dense. This is especially true if they are made without multiple additives and stabilizers (which many people are allergic to) as the recipes in this book are. I'm not sure from your review if your problem with "bricks" is unrealistic expectations on how the bread should turn out or a baking problem. However, your "gummy" crackers are almost certainly due to over-mixing. This and other cooking issues that can cause problems with and which are unique to allergy/gluten-free baking are addressed on pages 9-10 of the book. One of the books that I have written does give directions in steps rather than paragraphs (The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide) and I do have a website (which currently comes up 6th if you search "food allergies" in Google, or you can get it under publisher information if you look up any of my books on Google Books. Sorry to make you search but Amazon frowns on websites being posted). If you contact me though my website, I will give you whatever support you need for your baking problems. Also, I kind of "fixed" your rating by bringing the average up to 3. Good luck with your son's diet, and I hope you read this and contact me through my website. Posted by the author.

Help Me Behave! is a guide especially designed for those who are attempting to track down problem foods. Corn products are the first to be eliminated in this guide. Most people are unaware that corn by-products are so abundant in all aspects of our food supply, especially in the United States. For example, if you brush your teeth, use paper plates, cook or eat in a restaurant, you are using corn products. It is the most difficult food item to eliminate. Studies are now showing that corn is one of the top allergens. After eliminating corn it is much easier to identify all other problem foods. The other products I suggest eliminating are artificial colors, sweeteners, and flavors, BHA, BHT, MSG, and Sulfur Dioxide. These additives have been suspect in a multitude of health problems, specifically ADD and ADHD for years. Fortunately these ingredients are completely nutritionally unnecessary. Every person's sensitivities are unique. An elimination diet is a tool used to identify which adaptations are necessary on a person by person basis. At times it can be very difficult to pinpoint an exact cause. In cases where medication is necessary, the best nutrition is essential. Taking out the products I have specified leaves only good nutritional options.

I am terribly unsatisfied with this book. I was searching for recipes related to feeding child with ADD and this popped up. Unfortunately Ms. Goodyke eliminates mostly corn products which are only one of 5 areas for my son. Due to sensitivities to chocolate (which is in most of the sweets) and any sugar most of these were complete unusable. I have reverted to allery cookbooks (much much better) and candida diet/recipe books (which are awesome for eliminating most common allergens). There is not even reference to alternatives for wheat, eggs etc.

If someone has reached the point of researching topics such as headaches, allergies, and migraines I'm assuming they have also had many vistits with various Doctors and Specialists. Many of the recommended "do's and don'ts' had caused me more problems. Both my E.N.T. and Allergist Specialists had agreeded that this guy had some extreme thoughts that basicly made me worse.

This book is a must read for migraine sufferers. Since reading the book 8 months ago I have decreased the frequency and severity of my migraines dramatically. But, in order to accomplish this I've had to alter my environment (trying to eliminate all allergens) and start receiving allergy shots.

The book does a great job of explaining why your headaches could be caused by allergies. It explains how allergies affect your system, and what you can do to fight them. It is well written and very easy to understand. It also explains how it is possible for allergens to cause headaches without the appearance of classic allergic symptoms (runny noise, congestion, etc.).

I'm thankful for the relief it has brought me, and I would encourage anyone who has migraines to give this a read.
