"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" provided me with insight as to why my daughter wasn't healing, when I thought she should have been better. I found the book supporative, encouraging and helpful for anyone who has experienced the frustrations of living with environmental illness. The appendicies alone, which include both books and internet web sites are a valuable reference tool.

Life altering, life correcting, life saving.

I suffered a three-strike attack on my health several years ago, first with a dangerous gas leaking into an office building, then with a massive plumbing flood that combined with the gas to generate incredible amounts of mold/fungus, etc., finally with a mix of kerosene/jet fuel and heavy perfumes applied by others to mask all of the above. Despite my spending incredible amounts of time and money on every top-dollar doctor in Colorado, Carl Grimes was the one who personally figured out everything that had happened and helped steer me to solutions beyond anyone else's grasp. This book is surely the world's best distillation of knowledge in these areas at its current peak, and I heartily recommend it to anyone... not just with healthy habitat issues, but anyone with a habitat... so that when/if you should suddenly have a horrible surprise happen to you, or to a friend, you will have a strong knowledge base to survive the unexpected change in your world.

Excellent information on a secret world wide epidemic!

This is an excellent book! There is so much described here which I can immediately relate to. I had eliminated caffeine from my diet a few weeks prior to a internet search revealing this book. It confirms many issues which my doctor left unanswered. I had previously asked him if there was such a thing as caffeine allergy, and he replied,"No". I still knew there was something about caffeine. Why did soft drink manufacturers substitute cocaine with caffeine? Why do they put it there in the first place? Because it is an addictive drug which keeps you coming back for more, much like cigarettes and other "hard drugs". What makes a drug "hard" anyway? Is it because it is way too obvious to slip past most people? Just a few things do think about while you wait for your copy to arrive!

Great book!

This is a very interesting book, especially of you have been affected by caffeine and would like to have a better understanding of its influence in the human body. I found the book to be written in both, a memoir as well as a scientific way. Some chapters are very specific in defining chemical and biological processes, and might be tedious to some people. Nevertheless, it is a great source of facts and stories, told not only by the author but also by others who have experienced a life change due to the consumption of caffeine.

A great diet indeed. However, I was surprised when I read about his suggestion about including tofu into the diet. It is well known now amongst health practitioners that tofu is NOT a health food. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

What a great book! There's so much hype and misinformation in the thirty million dollar diet industry, it's refreshing to run across a book that offers sound information based on good science. Dr. Hyman covers every aspect of developing optimal health.

Easy-To-Follow, Reader-Oriented Book

Review Date: 2008-07-24
I bought this book because of a recommendation by someone that had implemented, and kept using Ultra-Metabolism "steps" with great success. Upon reading Ultra-Metabolism, I recognized information I use and share...all the time.

Why read or buy another "weight-loss" book when the Seven Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss are listed on page 73-74? According to Dr. Hyman, everyone has his or her own instruction manual. So why purchase this book? I would suggest that you download guides from www.ultrametabolism.com. This may be enough for you. The book serves as support and offers reminders to help people keep on track.

Ultra-Metabolism quizzes you and guides you, step-by-step, to deciphering your own metabolism, and a whole lot more, in what he calls an "Ultra-Metabolism Prescription". Again, Dr. Hyman instructs us that this is the basis for generating the right instructions to your own body, through diet, and ... Ultra-Metabolism.

Dr. Hyman follows the premise of food containing information to talk to our genes, or "Nutrigenomics". In addition to offering exciting, cutting-edge research, he offers nutritionally-sound advice on how you can talk to your genes: Eat real, whole foods; eat foods high in phytonutrients; eat foods with a low glycemic to control appetite; eat more fiber intake to lower body fat; get your meal timing right to help turn on your metabolism; reduce stress (stress makes you fat, relaxation makes you thin); exercise in a manner that turns on metabolism; and reduce inflammation.

"Eat breakfast daily: Spread your food intake and calories throughout the day; Wait at least two to three hours after your last meal before going to sleep."

Where have you heard this before?

Another example of simple, effective suggestions are supplements to consider when you are turning on Ultra-Metabolism:

"1. A multivitamin and mineral combination. 2. A balanced, absorbable calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplement. 3. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Many people do very well with a structured approach to weight loss. As the reader would expect, Dr. Hyman guides you to natural weight loss, step-by-step. Starting with Step one: Detoxifying the liver.

In addition to offering a plethora of practical, easy-to-implement weight loss suggestions, the author busts a few "myths" while promoting education. He includes information regarding "Nutrition", and how we come to think about food:

P. 66 The food industry generates more than a trillion dollars in annual sales, accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product (GNP), and employees 17 percent of the country's labor force. It spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. Seventy percent of those dollars go to pushing fast food, convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and desert. Only 2.2 percent of those marketing dollars are spent on advertising for fruit, vegetables, grains or beans.

I also enjoyed Dr. Hyman inclusion of relevant and stimulating quotes:

"Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises."
Samuel Butler

As you would expect, Dr. Hyman offers the usual faire of delicious, natural recipes, and Ultra-Metabolism possesses its fair share of "buzz-words". Ultra-Metabolism also includes Dr. Hyman's attempt to generate an on-line Ultra-Metabolism community, which comes off as a bit far fetched. However, taking cues from various weight-watching groups, his efforts may very well bear fruit.

The "Food is Medicine" premise of Ultra-Metabolism focuses this book as excellent "support" literature. Ultra-Metabolism reinforces your healthy lifestyle choices, which, in turn, support your health and wellness. Ultimately, in this "win-win" situation, you gain timely, user-friendly, effective resources and guidance to be well-inform about the choices you may make ... a recipe for success.

I prefer to recommend natural health texts that acknowledge alternative health practices, and their long-time contributions to the health, stress reduction and wellness fields; this acknowledgement was lacking in Ultra-Metabolism. However, given the exceptional nature of this easy-to-follow, reader-oriented book, I am happy to recommend it.

Finally, Closer to the eating truth

"Ultrametabolism" is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of diet and its effect on your health. As a large endurance athlete struggling to lose a few pounds and keep up my stamina, this book has revealed the misconceptions of the typical low fat or low carb diet and throughly explained why the "calories in/ calories out" equation doesn't seem to work for many people. By learning why to eat whole non processed foods, my friends and I have all begun to shed unwanted pounds and become healthier and stronger in the process. Bravo to Dr. Hyman! Highly recommended and easy to put into action.

I have used about 15 recipes so far and liked everyone of them. Sometimes it is hard to get the same results(with texture)compared to cooking with allergenic foods(such as butter), but that is to be expected. I have used coconut milk for the creamy-based soups, which works very well. Also, she gives you guidelines if you want to switch out an ingredient to a more allergenic one(such as eggs), since for an example my daughter is not allergic to eggs. And Finally...there is a good variety of recipes to choose from and most require ingredients that I typically keep on hand. Word of caution...not a gluten-free cookbook

This book is simply a recipe book which replaces eggs & nuts in recipes with name brand egg-substitutes and such. There are tons of references to specific brands of ingredients.
And the remainder of the recipes are simple every day recipes.. that dont have eggs in them in the first place.
Yes.. I know how to cook oatmeal, grits, or speghetti without using eggs and nuts.
There are much better books out there.

There are other great books out there that explore eating healthy whole foods that are gluten and dairy-free. This book is unfortunately not gluten-free. I have 2 sons with ADHD who are on the GF / CF diet. I was hoping this book would provide some new recipes for our family - there are some that we have found - but most of them take a while to prepare. Two of my favorite books are The Gluten-Free Vegan: 150 Delicious Gluten-Free, Animal-Free Recipes and The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health. Both books have tons of healthy recipes that are gluten, dairy, and egg-free!

Nearly all of these recipes call for cornstarch. Many gluten free eaters are also allergic to corn. Yes, you can substitute arrowroot for cornstarch, but it is much more expensive and no guarantee the recipes will work.

I did like the style of writing and the selection of recipes and thought the introductory information was well written and helpful.

Very Average Gluten-Free Cookbook

Review Date: 2008-02-18
I've tried at least 15 of the recipes in the book with mixed results. About half of the time, the output is poor (e.g. gummy, heavy, thick. undercooked, overcooked, etc.). The other half of the time, the product was fine. Let me state that I consider myself a very proficient cook and baker. When trying recipes, I'm meticulous about the ingredients, the measurements and the temperature. I would say this cookbook will help you output gluten-free substitutes for popular gluten dishes. HOWEVER, the products will be "average" and not of the high-quality that will make eaters say "Wow! That was delicious. May I have the recipe?" Keep this in mind when buying this cookbook.

Irresponsible in it's lack of nutrition

Our family has been gluten free for almost a year and we've read every cookbook printed on the subject. This is by far the unhealthiest one we've run across. Every recipe in it uses exclusively potato starch and corn starch, neither of which contains much in the way of nutrients. There are many tasty, nutritious, gluten and rice free alternative flours, such as: sorghum, quinoa, almond, teff, montina and millet to name a few. Quinoa, millet and almonds are available in every grocery store in their whole form and are easily ground at home in a coffee grinder. Baking with these healthy ingredients as your main flours and lightening with about 30% starch turns out delicious and healthy treats. Our current favorite gluten free baking book is Baking Classics by Annalise G. Roberts. Delicious and healthy recipes that all work everytime. Additionally Mrs. Ryberg's suggestion to use carrageenan as a binder is ill advised as it is a proven carcinegen.

Not sure I'll use this much.

I purchased this book for the cinnamon roll recipe that was recommended to me. I was looking for a wheat-free recipe, however this cookbook uses no flour, just starches(corn, potato). I'm not sure how healthy these recipes are, although the cinnamon rolls tasted delicious(I'd eat about anything with cinnamon) I don't know how many other recipes I'll try from this cookbook.

I was so excited about this book. My 13 month son has food sensitivities to wheat for sure, and we avoid soy, nuts, dairy and eggs. Therefore, it is hard to find things that he can eat--I am trying to be as creative as possible. I have tried 3 recipes from this book and not one has turned out well. The oatmeal muffins were flat and doughy and the oatmeal pancakes were the same. The porcupine meatball recipe needs to denote that brown rice should not be used, because even after cooking them for 1 hour, the rice was not cooked. I will try another recipe, but so far have been disappointed. I am finding that allergy free cooking is almost impossible to do and taste good.

Not For Me

While I truly appreciate the sharing of "allergen-free" recipes this book doesn't work for me. First, while it technically has wheat-free recipes, I mistakenly took that to mean gluten-free. Almost all baking recipes use oat flour which is not gluten free. Second, I need a low fat diet which means no beef. Finally, I need "legume-free" and this uses lots of beans in recipes. Almost every meal recipe uses beef so I would have to substitute right and left in this book. I was looking for a collection of recipes where I wouldn't have to substitute and this one isn't for me (but may be for you).

This was part of a birthday present I gave to my niece when she turned 18. She's learning to cook and has wheat and dairy allergies. The recipes are fairly simple so she has enjoyed trying out several of them. Not sure she has liked the taste of everything she's cooked, but I'm not sure whether the fault lies in the recipes or the chef :-) A good beginners guide.

I am so happy to have found this book. I have been making the quick breads for my boys (one of which is allergic to peanuts, wheat, soy, egg, and milk). I have been making the breads into mini muffins to take the place of snack crackers, etc. THey love them. I also used the zuccini brownies for their (twin boys) birthday cake. It was great. I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).

There were NO surprises in this book. No new information. Its been around for years.

Some of these remedies might have worked for some people, but from what I can glean from internet discussion groups, most have not found relief from them, including myself, and rarely, if ever, have all the remedies worked on one person.

This book might be on the up and up, but in the end I was left feeling that this was more of an advertisement by a doctor looking for patients, rather than an autobiography.

I would be interested to hear if any of the other posters have found relief from what is in this book, or are they simply running on hope and some sort of validation that they are not really hypochondriacs, but victims of some medical community scam. If not, you've got to wonder if its not just one more scam preying on those in need.

Been there, done that.

I recently discovered that my various symptoms were not in my head, but were in fact due to dairy allergy. Since giving up dairy, I no longer have aching joints, upset stomach, fatigue, hives, and a skin condition (since giving up dairy, the skin condition is almost completely gone). This book is the best book I've seen so far. The recipes are simple and tasty. If you're a true cheese lover like I am, I don't believe you're going to find anything that replaces the taste of cheese. So, if you're looking for something that tastes EXACTLY like dairy but isn't -- forget it. However, if you're willing to try something different so you can have better health, then this book is great. It's also a good source of information on dairy intolerance and allergy.

As others have mentioned, these are recipes for basic homecooking. Some reviewers have been disappointed because they already know how to cook a lot of these recipes. I'm an experienced cook, and yes I already know how to bake a chicken, but I still love this book.

It provides hundreds of milk-free recipes in one book. No more searching for a milk-free recipe for every dinner, potluck, or party. I only recently started cooking milk-free, so a lot of my recipes have milk, butter, or cheese. It's so convenient to have lots to choose from in one place.

Also, the author has already experimented with milk replacements so I don't have to. (For example: I already loved rice pudding, but rice milk was too watery and wasn't working well with my recipe. I was glad to see the author suggests coconut milk instead. Now I know what to use and I can enjoy my favorite pudding again!)

The recipes are every day foods kids will enjoy. Nothing too gourmet. And lots of deserts to choose from for special occasions. I'll choose a cake from this book for my son's upcoming birthday, it's such a relief not to worry about finding a recipe!

There are also recipes for whipped cream and cake icing if you don't want to use the hydrogenated, tran-fat milk-free name brands. There are also "ice creams" if you don't have brand name soy ice cream available.

All our favorites can now be made milk-free! I'm so delighted that I found this book!

I work full time, I have 2 kids, I don't have time to make all sorts of substitutes and marinate stuff for hours. This is simple, easy to follow book with results that are really tastey. INCLUDING DESSERTS!!! The whole family ate these reciepes no questions asked! They didn't even know that they were eating dairy free until I told them a week later. I have yet to have one reciepe flop!!
Some of the manufactures of subst items she lists are A LITTLE outdated, but we all know to check labels and I still found her tips very useful. I had been adjusting to not eating at all when in doubt, with this book I am starting to explore more in milk free cooking because I have less doubts.

As for "Cooking Without Milk: Milk-Free and Lactose-Free Recipes" Light a match and just burn your cash..not worth the paper it's on. I mean...Do you really need a recipe for a peanut and butter sandwich?

I purchased this book for my [...] peanut-allergic daughter after discovering it at the library. She absolutely LOVES it and has me read it to her again and again. She also brought it to school during "Nutrition Week" and her teacher read it to the class, and also thought it was fabulous. The book realistically addresses the issue of living with peanut allergies, but in a very child-appropriate format. Every grade-school age child should read this book.

My five year old son has food allergies and is starting Kindergarten this year. He is the first child at his school to have food allergies and I have been searching at the library for a book to give to his teacher to read to his class to help them understand. I read it myself first and was a bit hesitant to read it to my son because it shows what happens when a child has an allergic reaction (he was one when he had his reactions and obviously doesn't remember). I was afraid he might be scared. When I read it to him, however, he loved it, as did his younger brother who is allergy-free. I think it made my allergic child feel better to see someone else with the same allergies as him. I also think it helped him realize just how important it is for him to not touch peanut butter even if he is being teased. And, yes, I know that at some point in life, he will be teased because of this. This is a great book and I am buying two copies today - one for his class and one for us here at home.

The Peanut Butter Jam is a good book for elementary aged children. I bought it for my three year old son who has food allergies including nuts. He was able to sit through it and understand it but, I think the concepts are a little bit to scary. For all long while we have discussed his allergies and he knows that certain foods make him react. When he was two we visited the local ambulance corps in case he has an anaphalactic reaction and we talk about using an epi pen. The book demonstrates all of that and the emotional aspects of being different and left out from some activities at school.

I loved the story. I read it to my 4 yr old and 2 yr old over and over. My 4 yr old just started school so it is helping her to understand what she may or may not have to do one day in school should the occasion confront her.

I hated this book

Horrible book. My son is allergic, and I thought this book would be good to have for him. I was wrong! I will never read it to his class. The book has a bully who teases the allergic boy for not being able to make a craft with peanut butter. I feel that the book gives the wrong message. I think it could give kids ideas.

This book gives many case studies to support the findings of NAET, which I found to be profoundly hopeful. It is also thorough in its discussion of the different organ systems and helps the reader to narrow down the nature of her or his own challenged meridians. I have had my first NAET treatment and it was pleasant and non-invasive. The book helped me to get started.

This book is very enlightening. It make one really think twice about an illness/allergy! It also makes one consider doing something about their health.

NAET is expensive but it is working for my baby and me.

I've had IBS for years and was getting very depressed. It interfered with everything I did. Everything I ate seemed to bother me. I've had two treatments and am seeing dramatic improvements already. I can eat without having stomach pains and constipation. I can actually eat dairy again!

My son is now 1 year old and he has also had two treatments and the rash on his face is gone. His excema on his arms and legs is clearing up and his bowel movements are normal now too. I have even noticed that he has been sleeping better.

My husband was very skeptical at first but agreeded to pay for us to go. We both agreed it was worth a try for both my son and me. We go once a week because it is not covered through insurance. It has been worth it. I have seen so many specialists that were unable to help. This is the first time that someone is actually helping us.

The book is interesting and informative but I would suggest going to the NAET website and finding information there and a practitioner in your area with the most up to date education.

The experience has inspired me to return to school to become a D.C. so that I can learn NAET and help others. (NAET practitioners must have a licensed medical degree).

I hope this helps someone out there.

I thought the therapy backfired...

I did not read this book, but after seeing how well my niece was doing on the therapy and researching it from their web-site I too tried it out for six sessions. The certified NAET practitioner I chose to see had several levels of study for credentials, so I felt confident that I was being careful. I went for the therapy to relieve seasonal allergies that plague me during the summer, with the primary symptom being generalized fatigue.

I started the therapy at the end of March and continued every week for the next six weeks. I do not normally have symptoms in March from allergies. I had symptoms after every session which abated after a day or two, but I was not concerned as I was reporting these to the practitioner. Some of the sessions "did not take" and had to be repeated, which is from my understanding a possible occurrence.

After six weeks I stopped because I did not yet see any benefit from the therapy, except for this one which was unexpected: I had been suffering from gastric reflux on a daily basis for the last six months and that completely resolved.

On the negative side, I had the WORST summer I have ever had in my entire life. I am talking about a lying-on-the-couch funk which lasted the entire summer into early fall. No respite, no amount of sleep or vitamins or exercise would shake the heavy feeling of tiredness.

As I had never experienced this level of fatigue before with my allergies, and have tried no other therapies beforehand, I think there is a definite possibly that the NAET therapy either caused or contributed to this situation. After all, if I had had the best summer of my life I would have attributed it to the therapy, surely we can say the same when the opposite happens.

It is now December and I have recovered, though I was so tired that my work suffered (self-employed) and I fell behind on my income production by several thousand dollars. Therefore, think carefully before you try this and ask yourself if you are willing to risk that the therapy will backfire?
