I can finally get my daughter her kitty she's been pestering me for years. With the help of this book, I now know exactly what to do so I don't kill myself in the process.
Useful for anybody with pets, not just those with allergiesReview Date: 2006-06-23
One of the things I like best about this book is that it's divided into sections: first, how to deal with the everyday pets, cats and dogs. But then, a whole separate section on rabbits (which includes lots of information about general rabbit care and habits, as well). One tip worth the entire price of the book, for example: using the bumpy grooming gloves, instead of brushes, which both protects your skin and cleans hair and dander off your pet rabbit.
And then one about birds. There's a list of which species of pet birds are "dustier" than others, so that one can choose a less-dusty species, or, if one chooses, say, a cockatiel, which is a very dusty bird although one of the most common pet birds, one can then be prepared ahead of time with the right kind of cage and supplies for the cockatiel, not just whatever the pet store automatically pushes.
Another chapter deals with the pocket rodents, from hamsters through guinea pigs to chinchillas. Again, there's reasonably accurate (although brief) general care information about these pets, and specific tips for each species.
There are also sections for ferrets and horses, and a big section on allergy-proofing your house in general. There's information about when to see a doctor and what medical treatments are available for allergies and asthma. There's also an extensive list of websites related to pets and allergies. Overall, this is a book that even pet owners without allergies could use, and even people whose allergies are to things other than pets, as well.

The book also suggests
energy balancing of numerous types. These may work but are only temporary as the author himself states
unless you go to
his clinic to be treated with kinesiology and antifungals. I was under the impression this was a book to help yourself not
a 250 page advertisment on why you should go to his clinic.
I have been down the take the anti-fungal road before and this
is only temporary as yeast and parisites are opportunistic and only hang around if there is wastes (undigested food, toxins,
etc)
to eat.
Four books I would recomend more are:
"Why grass fed is best" by JO Robinson
"Nourishing Traditions"
by Salley Fallon
"The master Cleanser" by Stanley Burroughs
and
"The Wonders of Colloidal Silver" by Dhyana Coburn
The
first two listed are about the role the modern diet has
in Chronic illness. The third tells you how to clean your body
of toxins and the last is about a super non-toxic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-virus, anti-whatever
is bugging you liquid. It was used before the almighty anti-biotics
were invented.
There are better choices.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in healthReview Date: 2002-12-04

As a teacher, I would also suggest this book for any parent or teacher who has children with learning problems. Prof. Rochlitz is a world leader on Brain Integration techniques. His suggestions should be standard in every regular and special education classroom.
The writer of the previous review obviously didn't read the same book I read or she couldn't quite grasp the ideas articulated. Actually she reviewed an older edition. Her advice doesn't make sense and is entirely out of context. The book isn't a recruiting tool to visit Prof. Rochlitz. Her mention of antifungals and parasites clearly demonstrates her ingorance of the topic. Furthermore her list of other books suggest some of the last things seriously ill people need.
I suggest readers who want more information read some of Prof. Rochlitz' recent articles in the medical journal Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients or visit his website wellatlast.com.

We love to eat and that includes dessert!!!
How easy it is to have something so tasty. I actually feel guilty that our problem was so easily solved. I was a little confused about the review comparing the title of Julie's book to a magazine. Duh???
Where did that come from?
Thank God for self publishers if that be the case, otherwise we may not
have such a great book!!!!

Easy and delicious!Review Date: 2007-08-08
Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is it is so easy to use. Generally there is only one recipe per page, with the ingredients listed at the top and preparation directions at the bottom, making it easily read while cooking. And the ingredients are readily available, even in the back-of-beyond area where I live. The only specialized ingredients, readily available, are xanthan gum, gluten-free pasta (other than homemade, Tinkyada brand is easily the best), and gluten-free flour mix.
Buy this book and your entry into a gluten-free diet will be easy. You'll be making delicious company meals as well.

I highly recommend this book. Dr. Ingram covers all sorts of other respiratory ailments too.
Thankful for Dr. Cass IngramReview Date: 2006-02-08
Cancer is a multi-billion dollar business in this country. Could that be why the AMA is fighting so hard to get the natural food industry under their thumb? I wish I had known about Oil of Oregano, Oregacyn and Juice of Oregano 8 years ago when my sister learned she had lung cancer. She died 8 months later.
Oil of Oregano has pulled me through sinus problems and colds and a weakness that tends towards respiratory problems. His books with suggested solutions are priceless. Thanks to Dr. Ingram for the sacrifices he has had to make to get this valuable information to us. He is to be honored.

Great buy for celiacs and those with gluten-intolerance!Review Date: 2001-07-24
This book is divided by section; Breads: yeast breads, quick breads and breakfast breads; Breakfast and Brunch: breads, meats, cereals, casseroles and other dishes; Pasta, Grains, Beans and Rice: pasta, grains, beans and rice; Desserts: cakes, bars and cookies, fruit desserts, puddings and custards, pies, miscellaneous; Soups: soups and soup components; Sauces and Salad Dressings: salad dressings, chutney and salsa, sauces for entrees or vegetables, dessert sauces and miscellaneous; Vegetables: potatoes and miscellaneous; Poultry: grilled chicken, stove-top chicken, and baked dishes; Fish and Seafood: fish and shellfish; Meats - Beef and Pork: beef, mixed meats, and pork & ham; Menus and finally, Appendices with valuable info like wheat flour equivalents and substitutes for wheat as a thickener.
My only major complaint (apart from that some of the recipies don't turn out half as well as they sound, but then again, that's to be expected on a gluten-free diet), is that unless you like Mexican / south-western food, about a quarter of these recipies are of no use to you. Before being diagnosed with celiac I used to get terrible indigestion (the author claims her only problem with wheat and gluten was a runny nose and stuffy sinuses). For anyone who is a celiac, and who has experienced the horrible side effects of simply eating food before a diagnosis is established, you probably want to AVOID foods that traditionally cause heartburn or gas or other symptoms similar to what I call a 'wheat-attack'. I'm sure plenty of people out there are able to handle Mexican / south-western food, but a huge number of celiacs are sensitive to all kinds of food, and kicking food up with peppers and spices and whatever else is great if your sinuses are blocked, but after having heartburn for months on end, you might not be too eager to start cooking up a big ol' pot of chilli!
Over all, it's still a good buy. I mean, even though I don't see many celiacs (espically soon after their diagnosis) cooking some of these things, it's a good book to have. You can make lots of things that are fairly "soft" on your tummy, and maybe after a little while (it's been almost 2 years since my diagnosis and I STILL won't touch a pot of chilli!) you can try some of these more spicy variations in the kitchen. If you're simply gluten-intolerant, or have sinus problems like the author, then this book is a great investment! If I weren't a celiac I'd definately give it 5 stars!
Is this the best we can do?Review Date: 2004-12-06

8 Degrees of Ingrediants Review Date: 2008-06-17

If food allergies affect your family, this is a must-haveReview Date: 2008-04-02
Melisa K. Priem's book, 8 Degrees of Ingredients, is chock full of recipes made to suit a wide variety of restrictive diets: gluten-free, dairy-free, peanut-free, etc. All the recipes are free of the top 8 food allergens (milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts). The recipes range from comfort foods like meatloaf to the fancy pan-seared duck breast with cherry wine sauce. Many recipes will appeal to kids as well - my toddler could not get enough of the gyro kebobs!
As a naturopathic doctor, I recommend this as great resource to my patients with food intolerances and those following a hypoallergenic diet to discover their own food sensitivities. Often their eyes will glaze over when we first discuss eliminating major allergens (soy, wheat, dairy, nuts, etc.) from their diet. Most typical American cooking contains many of these potential allergens, so following a hypoallergenic diet can feel quite overwhelming. Directing them to this cookbook has been a huge comfort that yes, they will be able to continue to eat tasty and familiar foods!
The recipes themselves are clear and concise. They contain easy-to-follow directions for even a novice cook, explaining how to braise a pork chop or cook whole grains, for example. The recipes are very flavorful, seasoned liberally with herbs and spices. An especially rich section is the desserts. This is often where hypoallergenic recipes are extremely lacking. Candies, cookies, cakes and puddings offer many choices for the sweet tooth on a restrictive diet. The whoopie pies are fantastic. It is hard to believe that those pies are gluten, dairy, and egg-free!
My concerns with 8 Degrees of Ingredients are few but pointed. I find it very surprising that more people have a sensitivity to fish, than to corn or nightshade plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant), as that is not what I see in my practice. I also would have liked photos included of the recipes. Photos always make a recipe seem more enticing to make.
Overall, this is a great cookbook for those with food intolerances/allergies and for the people who cook for them. For the beginning cook to the seasoned chef, there are tons of delicious hypoallergenic meals to be made!

Changed our lifeReview Date: 2004-03-15
The Feingold diet is the start of this revolution and Sue takes it even further, this doesn't totally disregard Feingold at all just improves on his ideas.
I had an ADHD son and a "failing" baby who possibly would not have survived who were both "cured" by this diet. I myself have shaken off my long term depression due to it also. We do not need any medications now.
Try the diet for a month before you trash the idea,... if you do not experience any changes then trash it but I would like to bet that the positive changes will change your mind.
For even easier reading and guidance, get hold of Failsafe Cookbook which is easier to refer back, and follows up this first book of Sue Dengate's. There is also a webpage (www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info) with heaps of information and also scientific study with proof on how added preservative in our bread can cause serious side affects in our childrens behaviour and illnesses.

Thank you Sue for your wonderful book, without which my daughter would have been on ritalin and still no better off.
If you only buy one book in your life - IT SHOULD BE THIS!!Review Date: 2004-06-07
Food intolerance is a relatively new area being studied and we are far from completely understanding how chemicals (food and other)affect the body. Sue Dengates book was the first piece of literature which gave me an insight into food intolerance and how it affected me. Years later I still am re-reading it. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A COPY!!!!
Growing up, though outside of the home I was thought to be an angel and was achieving exceptional grades (without studying mind you, which I have always regretted) - at home I was often a completely obnoxious, uncontrollable terror. The foods I was eating affected my health and mood (I often had a cold, had constant swings between adoring everyone and being depressed or angry - especially if I was asked to clean up etc). Rarely did a day go past where I did not get into trouble. We all thought it was normal behaviour - part of growing up. Imagine everyones relief when I started eating "friendly foods". In fact everyone noticed improvements - and mum's migranes are gone.
I can't begin to descibe the profound effect this book and finding out about food intolerance has had on my family's life. I am still learning how food effects me. This isn't a diet!! Everyone is affected by food differently and everyone has a different tolerance level to certain chemicals (refer to "Super Size Me").It is about finding out if and to what extent you are affected - allowing you to make informed decisions about what you put in your mouth - allowing you to lead the life you want to lead.
Once big problems like health and behaviour have disappeared there are subtle effects food has on your mood, concentration, sleep, balance etc These take longer to fix - and often you only notice the difference when you start eating the wrong foods again. I am one of the lucky ones to have been affected enough for the diet to have a notieable difference in my behaviour so these subtle benefits can give me the extra edge over my competition at university.
Sue, if you read this - I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!
