I've read a few books on nutrition as it relates to health but few compare with this one. In "Our Children's Health" author Bonnie Minsky details the "nutritional crisis" of America's children. She does an excellent job of discussing allergies, food intolerances, asthma, immune system dysfunction, ADD and other learning and behavior disorders, autism spectrum disorders, vaccines, osteoporosis, eating disorders, depression, and violence and how each of these may be affected by nutritional or environmental factors. With lots of charts, descriptions, suggestions, and other detailed information this first section is easy to follow and use.

The second section of the book covers how you can ensure that your child can have optimum health by discovering environmental and nutritional problems and fixing them. The section on a diet that can be used to determine your child's food and chemical sensitivities was especially useful. Using it anyone can work through the system to determine what he or she and their children should be avoiding. It also includes nutritional support regimens for athletes and children. Finally, the appendix details some safe household product alternatives to ones with more toxic chemicals.

"Our Children's Health" is a recommended read for anyone concerned about nutritional health of their self or their children. It is also recommended for those who want to seek alternative holistic approaches to some common problems of childhood.

Everyone should read this book!

I was relieved to find a book on health that provides sound information in a way I could easily understand.

Bonnie Minsky and Dr. Lisa Holk share their years of experience and knowledge on a broad range of health issues. After reading this book, I feel empowered by the natural, wholesome alternatives available to the most common ailments of our society.

I highly recommend reading this book. If you have children, or are thinking of getting pregnant, this book is a must!

As with all of Bruce Fife's books, his writing style is always easy to understand.
This is a great book to read now that manufacturers are looking to replace all the trans fats in our food supply and one of the options they are turning to is palm oil.
For people who are still afraid of saturated fats, this book will relieve all your fears. Its amazing what all palm oil (and coconut oil) can do for us health wise.
This is a must read, along with Bruce's, "the coconut oil cure".
And as always, there are recipes at the end of the book. I have always loved the recipes!
I wish more people were aware of the health benefits of these 2 oils. I will be adding palm oil to my kitchen from here on out.
Thank you Bruce for yet another well written and imformative book!

The Palm Oil Miracle: Discover the Healing Power of Palm Oil is a fascinating guide to the healthful and nutritional properties of palm oil, especially virgin (red) palm oil. Palm oil is a natural source of tocotrienol, an antioxidant proven to help reverse heart disease and fight cancer. As a natural vegetable oil, palm oil contains no trans fatty acids or cholesterol, and has proven useful to doctors and government agencies as an inexpensive means to treat vitamin-deficiency related illnesses. Palm oil's many benefits include improving blood circulation, supporting healthy lung and liver function, strengthening bones and teeth, protecting against mental deterioration including Alzheimer's disease, providing a dietary source of vitamin E and beta-carotene, boosting one's immune system, and much more. A number of recipes and guidelines for cooking with palm oil round out this user-friendly tribute to a healthful food.

I was excited to have the honor of reviewing Dr. Fife's work, " The Palm Oil Miracle," considering I had learned so much from his previous book on Coconut Oil, and I was also intrigued to learn about oil made from palms.
As I have come to appreciate with our author's writings, he carefully explains to the reader the information he wishes to portray. In this book we find, the history of palm oil, studies that have been done concerning its benefits, and how it will help you live a healthier life by using it.
I have to tell you I was amazed as I read the benefits of this oil for our bodies. To quote our author from page 111, "Palm oil can affect your health in so many positive ways it can be regarded as a health tonic." Now that is a potent statement worth taking notice of, and the information and facts he gives definitely back it up.
Believe me by the time you get to the final chapter of this book you are ready to try Palm oil and you will be glad that our author has included page upon page of recipes using this miraculous oil for you to try. If you care about your body and your quality of life, you will want to consider using Palm Oil. Since it is probably a mystery to you, as it was to me, this book is a must have to understand how Palm oil use can benefit your body. It is amazing! "Palm Oil Miracles," leaves no stone unturned in answering any question you may have and will definitely lead you on a path towards more healthy eating and living. I greatly recommend this book; it is chock full of facts as to 'why' you should consider switching to Palm oil and is written in an easy to 'digest' way. Great book for all those who want to learn more about what their body needs to enjoy a healthier life. Palm oil definitely would be on the list of 'to have.' Highly recommended read!

Bruce Fife has done it again!

"Mr. Coconut Miracle", and the author of the instant classic "Saturated Fat May Save Your Life" has hit another "grand slam" with The Palm Oil Miracle.

Few people in the US of A know anything about Palm Oil - and how GREAT it is for our health.

Instantly dispelling the lies we've been "fed" by the Vegetable Oil industry, Consumer "Advocate" Groups and the medical establishement about how saturated fat (there's more than one) clogs our arteries & raises cholesterol, we learn that Palm Oil is full of heart FRIENDLY nutrients, such as Carotenoids and "Super vitamin E" (Tocotrienols) as well as CoQ10 and other wonderful substances. These nutrients go far beyond just being heart-friendly, too (brain, eyes, immune system, bones, joints, skin, etc.)

We also learn how Palm Oil contains the same exact ratios of fats (saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) found inside the trillions of cells in HEALTHY humans, and why it is the perfect substitute for hydrogenated / trans-fat-laden vegetable oils for cooking, baking and frying virtually any foods (you can even make HEALTHY donuts with it - no kidding!).

Once you learn the scientific FACTS about Palm Oil, you will run to your local health food store / "natural" supermarket and start using it every day for the rest of your life.

Thank you, Dr. Fife, for another "jewel" of a health book. Can't wait to see what you've got in store for us with your next book!

P.S. - Nutritional supplements made with "Super vitamin E" (Tocotrienols) from un-refined palm oil are available from companies such as Jarrow Formulas and Life Extension Foundation.

Notable, are the medical and technical knowledge together with the care and real concern for Parkinson's sufferers, which is shown by compassionate practitioners in many fields.

This has to be the definitive book on this subject, giving hope, support and the tools with which to live as creatively and with as much dignity as possible. I do not just wish you well with it's publication, but am lost in admiration!"

I have read the whole book, which I found a super help for both Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as well as for Patients and Carers. Honestly I haven't read such a detailed and multidisciplinary book so far. Eminent medical and allied healthcare professionals have contributed to the information in the book and all statements are backed up by scientific references.

This is just a brief overview of how I see the whole book which is modern, comprehensive, practical and I think it really is "The way forward!"

There are all the possible medical chapters involved including diagnosis, the difference between young and older onset, treatment (very comprehensive and good).

I find it wonderful that all the chapters are also translated into non-medical language in addition to medical text, with practical aspects given for and by Patients, Carers, Nurse Specialists, etc.

All possible Tests are explained including PET and SPECT and other (Biochemical) laboratory tests.

Surgery is written in the best multidisciplinary and complex way I have ever read. Super!

Even Anaesthesiology and Podiatric Surgery are involved.

I very much enjoyed how much stress and volume is given to Nutrition, which even included recipes and dietary recommendations for healthy food, gaining or losing weight, overcoming problems with chewing, swallowing, etc. I didn't know about Glutathione, which is mentioned, with the references too.

A lot of space is given to sexual life in PD. This is great and provides a lot of information, which is very useful and new for me too.

Also Traditional Chinese Medicine aspects are mentioned including Acupuncture. I found this interesting since it is not my field and I appreciate it.

Depression and other psychiatric problems are explained and ways for management provided, not only medically but also from the psychologist's point of view.

All the health care professionals including PD Nurse Specialist, Physiotherapist, Speech and Occupational Therapist, etc. have their brief articles. Their role is explained and the need for them pointed out. Aspects such as communication are nicely written.

Other problems such as Osteopathy and problems that occur especially in Older People are mentioned, which is very useful.

A lot of Exercise is described with pictures, which is very practical.

Even Patients' and Carers' Points of View are not omitted!

To repeat what I said before - this is just a brief overview of how I see the whole book which is modern, comprehensive, practical and I think it really is "The way forward!"

As industrialization and technology take over our lives, we become more sedentary. Through the riches of our country, we can afford more meat, dairy products and processed foods; thus, contributing to our poor health, "over-nutrition", otherwise known as the Western Diet.

Erik Millstone works at the University of Sussex in Science Policy. He has been working on food-related issues for almost 30 years. Tim Lang is a professor of food policy at City University in London. He is, also, a consultant to the World Health Organization. With the aid of Axel Drescher, a professor of Applied Geography at Freiburg University, they have formulated this educational book about "who eats what, where and why".

While rich industrialized countries thrive in excess and develop diseases from over-consumption (such as, diabetes), these countries are also feeding a bulk of our grain to feed livestock, when over 40 million people a year die of starvation.

This book is filled with statistics, bar graphs, charts and miscellaneous graphics that help aid in our understanding of food's role in modern life. The book is divided into five parts: Contemporary Challenges (feeding the population, environmental challenges, disease, nutrition and more); Farming (mechanization, genetic modification, pesticides, sustainable farming and more); Trade (animal transport, fair trade, tariffs and more); Processing, Retailing and Consumption (staple foods, Organic food, fast food, alcohol and more); and World Tables (agriculture and comsumption).

This is not a cookbook, nor a glamorous journey through each country's cuisine, however.

Upon studying this book, I ponder the ideas of vegetarianism for a healthier way of life, and as an objection towards the feeding of livestock in lieu of providing grain for starving nations. I, also, think of how we have looked for ways on simplifying our lives with remote controls, garage door openers, email, kitchen appliances, washers and dryers, and how ultimately, we have complicated it more. This reminds me of a movie I once saw: The Gods Must Be Crazy. Although this movie takes on a more comedic approach of two wildly different cultures in South Africa, still it does demonstrate what both cultures have gained and lost due to industrialization.

Information found in this book can help educate the reader on how the food on their plate came to be and at what cost to society. For anyone that eats, and that is everyone, we should all read this book and become more educated on how we are contributing, both positively and negatively, to our society.

simple and direct on food and agriculture

The Atlas of food is not a cookbook but a cursory view of food and agriculture around the world in 100 pages or so. Rich of tables, charts and histograms of different shapes and colors, it provides a basic knowledge on food industry. The book is divided into five parts: Contemporary Challenges (population and productivity, environment, consuming diseases, over and under-nutrition in the world, and food aid); Farming (mechanization, animal feed, genetic modification, pesticides, fishing, biodiversity and sustainable farming); Trade (flows, animal transport, food miles, subsidies, trade disputes, fair trade); Processing, Retailing and Consumption (staple foods, processing giants, probiotics and cholesterol lowering food, organic food, fast food, food additives, eating out and alcohol); and world tables on agriculture and consumption.

If you want to know the state of the world of under-nutrition and over-nutrition, or that the amount of grain needed to feed one person for one year on a meat-based diet is 930 kg or on a grain-based diet is 180 kg and many more questions answered, then this is the book. Very good for students and general readers. However, if instead you want to have a deeper look at food and agriculture and related issues then visit the website of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (...).

Over the last few years I have developed an interest in finding out where things come from and how they are built/grown/processed. Specifically the everyday things we take for granted in our consumer society. Whether it be food products, electronics, autos, clothing, energy products, or the raw materials it takes to build these products.

Sort of like discovering your family history maybe, except I'm doing it for the things we consume. I have traveled for 1+ year over the last 2 years. Most recently 7 months straight through Asia and Australia, and parts of Arabia.

When I first heard about this book at the New Internationalist magazine website the title intrigued me immediately. I quickly ordered a copy on Amazon.

This book (As I've discovered many of the titles in the Penguin Atlas series) is so easy to read and conveys so much information with just a quick glance. The author has covered so many aspects of the "modern food chain." Many that even those who might consider themself knowledgeable probably would not have thought of. Each 2 page spread's statistical sources are identified in the back for further research.

This is one of those books that I feel should be distributed for free to every household in heavy consumer nations (US, Japan, Western Europe, Australia).

As international trade continues to skyrocket more books like this are needed on a host of other industries/categories - like some of the ones I mentioned earlier. As much as a book can, this book goes a long way toward reducing the ignorance of reality caused by the disconnect from where things come from and where they are consumed.

I have what I believe is the orginal book. The Lunch Box Book by Annie Gilbar from 1984. I used many of the recipes in the book and felt it was worth keeping even though my children are grown. I have used some of the recipes for adult eating as well. Nicole's Zucchini Bread is a favorite.
I am now teaching preschool and parents are looking for easy but delicious lunch recipes. I am planning on ordering the lastest version of this book and recommend you do the same. Of course for preSchools or Day Care , know your school's policy with recipes containing nuts.

I am very impressed with this book for the quality and ease of the recipes. These are all your basic ingredients that are easy to find at any grocery store. It's one of those books that is great for a working mother or father who wants to fix something delicious in a short amount of time. Examples of some easy recipes are: Chicken Drummettes with a simple recipe using brown sugar, soy sauce, rice wine, ginger, scallion and chicken drummetts. Next, Mom's Chicken Salad with egg yolks, mustard, raspberry vinegar roquefort cheese, chicken, celer, grapes and peanuts or pumkin seeds---nutritious, delicious, and easy with minimal amounts of clean-up time. GREAT BOOK!!

Do your kids roll their eyes at the menu for their lunch box that day? Then this is the book for you! Authors Meredith Brokaw (wife of Tom Brokaw), Annie Gilbar and Jill Weber pack this delightful book full of over 100 tempting and nutritious recipes sure to make your child the want to actually keep and eat their lunch, and look forward to the fun, tasty, nutritious treats inside. These recipes are not difficult to make; nor do they require obscure ingredients--but they do add a touch of creativity and a lot of love. This book is full of terrific ideas!

I was one on statin drugs for 5+ years, allowing the statin to do all the work. Eventually I began having muscular and fatigue problems and desparately needed to make life style changes. With the help of Dr. Vitko's book and my own commitment to improved health I am moving toward a more medicine free life. I read the book in a day, which is unusual for me as I am easily distracted - but not this time. When you're holding something this good it's hard to lay it down. This is all I ever wanted to know about safely lowering cholesterol without medicines and supplements. If you ever get serious about controlling your own health this book is a must read for you!

I was't even looking for a book like this (even though I should have been), but saw it at my Dad's and picked it up. I could not put it down! I ordered it and am sure that reading it will result in longer, healthier lives for my family. Dr. Vitko is right on the money! His plan is simple and logical. It reminds us of what is right for our bodies. Unfortunately, corporate America has engrained unhealthy eating into our lives, and this book will inspire you to get away from that pattern. He points out how our health system is anything but "healthy" and our government sure isn't going to fix it, only we can fix ourselves. Everyone needs to read this book, not just those with high cholesterol!

Having high cholesterol, angina, and a heart doctor pushing for invasive surgery, I needed to look for alternatives. Dr. Vitko's book not only gave me hope, it gave me answers. He delivers on his promise to show you how to lower your cholesterol in three weeks without drugs, but the book has so much more information on how to live longer, healthier & feel great while you doing it.

Learning that diet can lower cholesterol without drugs is not exactly new information to me, but finding out that blood viscosity plays a major role in this scenario was a major eye-opener. Dr. Vitko explains blood viscosity in easy-to-understand terms and why it can be as important as cholesterol in your health picture. He gives you the causes and he gives you solutions to high blood viscosity.

His book is also candid & frank about the monopoly the medical profession has on our national health care & it's direction. This chapter is a "must read" if you think our government is seriously looking for answers to our health problems.

If you have a serious cholesterol problem & are willing to take responsibility for your own health, I highly recommend this book.

Teressa Ascencia's book "Playful Family Yoga" is a fresh guide to yoga that can bring you deep into the poses using the path of childlike simplicity.

Just open this book and you will feel yourself being drawn in by the inviting poses and the darling captions that speak to the child in us all. I found myself aching to try the 'starship', the double stretch opening my shoulders and the 'feeling of expanding into the universe' (and to have Scotty beam me up, as says the cute caption.) And then the 'table pose' and the yearning to 'feel my body as still as a mountain and my breath flowing like a river'. Then there's the 'olive press' and the 'flying angel' just to name a few. As my teen-age daughter and I were practicing "Playful Family Yoga" we found ourselves inventing new poses, which I'm sure will always spontaneously happen since inventiveness is a natural progression of playfulness.

Each pose is presented in a playful manner using enticing photos of two family members, imaginative titles and quotes, and a sidebar of the amazing benefits for the inquisitive mind. There are simple instructions that not only guide the physical movements but also engage the breath, the mind and the imagination in an almost seemingly effortless way. For this reason the book is a gem. I remember doing yoga poses as a child and the poses were as easy as standing. Only when the mind and breath are introduced are you doing yoga.

This book is not only for the young family but also for friends of all ages who like to play and stay young at heart.

Playful Family Yoga: For Kids, Parents and Grandparents
by Teressa Asencia is a remarkable book that is as inspirational as it is engaging.

I am a professional yoga teacher and have yet to see a more accessible book appropriate for all levels and all ages. The text is clear and the pictures are helpful. The book reads smoothly as a cohesive unit or you can have fun reading various chapters depending upon your interest or mood. The author is clearly an expert in her field which is crucial especially in a field where so much is published without experience and expertise to back it.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the practice of yoga no matter what age or level of expertise. It reinspired my practice of over 23 years and yet would make a great gift for someone who has never come into contact with yoga before either.

Enlighten yourself and read this book. This will definatley make you think about becoming a vegetarian.

I dare you to read this book and NOT seriously question your eating habits. As a happy meat-eater for 40 years, rarely thinking about where my food actually comes from, this little book was the source of an epiphany for me. Read it, and learn how to truly have an impact on our environment, the amount of compassion in our universe, and your own health.

Public libraries will thus find it a popular lend.

Please Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You Need to Be a Vegetarian provides an impassioned explanation for the movement toward a planet-based diet in sections addressing issues of health, environment, animal welfare and spirituality alike. Given this four-point argument it's hard to refute the value of a guide which will hold appeal to a wide audience, especially those already following vegetarian path. Public libraries will thus find it a popular lend.

A Great Little Guide To Macrobiotics.

The Pocket Guide To Macrobiotics is the perfect start to understanding the yin and yang of the diet. It explains the meaning of macrobiotics, the basic ideas behind the diet, how it can be used in everyday life, to heal, to gain energy, to help keep the body healthy. While published in 1997 it still makes total sense. It is flexible yet I have to warn you it will not be an easy regimen to follow at first.

Don't miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics. Without including any recipes, author Carl Ferre has done an excellent job condensing the most important aspects of marcobiotics into this handy book. An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.

This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.

Although it doesn't include any recipes, I think this book is excellent.

Best Expression of the macrobiotic way of eating to date

This small pocket guide outlines food choices in diagrams displaying the relative positions of food rather than in terms of nutritional data. Nutritional quantities and percentages of food are misleading in that the imply accurate descriptions of food before it is eaten and digested. Each body is different and the macrobiotic way of eating requires considering the condition of the eater as well as the food eaten. For anyone who has encountered strange or misleading information of this grain-based diet would benefit from reading this small guide. It is well written in an easy to follow format that persuades rather than dictates. The resources and references are excellent and the price is right.

Makes the government's Food Pyramid easier to understand and put into action.

In my experience, most people are aware of the government's My Pyramid (mypyramid.gov) outlining guidelines for healthy eating, but most can't seem to figure out how to incorporate it's advice their daily lives (or get overwhelmed by everything it has to offer!). "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the New Food Pyramids" presents a pared down plan for making My Pyramid's resources work for you, no matter what your goal, age or stage of life. It cuts to the chase on how to use the Pyramid eating plans to lose, maintain, or gain weight, as well as how to modify it if your pregnant or breastfeeding. Because it also includes information on the Kids My Pyramid, the book is appropriate for both children and adults. The book's simple descriptions of the Pyramid's resources demystifies a guide that many feel is complicated to negotiate (or unavailable to them if they don't have a PC at home), and is so much easier to use than the government's web site. It also provides tons of easy tips for including healthy foods in the diet without sacrificing all your "favorites." As a nutritionist who counsels both adults and children, I'm thrilled to be able to refer my clients to a resource that will make their transition to healthy eating easier and less confusing.

Some tension of purpose, but great information

The old food pyramid might not make a whole lot of sense given recent advances in nutritional understanding, but at least it was self-contained. You could glance over it and figure it out, no problem; not so with the new one. That's where "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the New Food Pyramids," by Elizabeth M. Ward, M.S., R.D., is meant to come in. It's a relatively small, non-threatening guide to deciphering that new picture. The idea that we should need an entire book to explain it sort of goes against the whole concept of creating a simple image that conveys a basic idea of nutrition, but on the other hand, it's probably unrealistic to expect such a thing to be possible in the first place. These days it takes a book to explain what we know about nutrition and the human body.

There's a surprising amount of clear, simple detail in this book on calorie-counting, food groups, serving sizes, and so on. It explains how to customize the pyramid plan to your age, gender, activity level, and weight needs, and it also explains how you can get the most out of your food nutritionally.

Overall I think this is a very handy book. I'm a little wary of calorie-counting as a means to weight loss. I also think there was some tension between the desire to keep the book limited to a simple explanation of the food pyramid vs. providing a detailed breakdown of nutritional needs that might have erred on the limited side. However, the book provides the lowdown on nutrition and how it relates to the wide array of foods out there in a largely detailed, easy-to-understand manner, and that certainly makes it worth reading.

The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the New Food Pyramids
By Elizabeth M. Ward, MS,RD
Alpha, 2005
$9.95

The long awaited food pyramid was released earlier this year along with a lot of sage advice, and for some, a lot of questions. Although the new icon, appearing everywhere from T-shirts to table tops, seems simple, this structure has many layers which are peeled away and clarified in The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the New Food Pyramids.

The book starts out by explaining the solid foundation upon which MyPyramid was built and the differences between the old and new versions. "The Least you Need to Know" section appears at the end of each chapter providing a succinct summary of its previous pages. Although the text is easy to comprehend, this summary helps to provide sound bites, so to speak, for the reader, reiterating essential points.

Laced through the chapters are sidebars delineated as: Pyramid Speak - definitions of important terms; Fun FAQs - answers to frequently asked questions about eating and exercise; Pitfalls - warnings about what might derail your efforts to eat better ad exercise more; and Power Point - tips and tidbits to make healthy eating easier. These highlighted areas could lead the reader to do further research on a related topic or provide practical tips and information to add flavor to the subject matter.

Liz Ward's voice is heard throughout the text, guiding readers to make MyPyramid their own. Although many health professionals may `already know' what the pyramid represents, it's helpful to have this guide as a resource, particularly with reference to the sample menus in varying calorie levels. The charts that specifically describe the "amount that counts as 1 cup" of fruits and vegetables could help answer some of the questions our patients are asking. A glossary and resource lists are also provided within.

A particularly important feature of this book is that it's perfect for those who do not have internet access. The only navigation required is the turning of these informative pages! This book is due to be released on January 1, 2006 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com.
