An excellent general overview, covering drug use and regulation, pharmacological basics, in-depth analyses of the legal drugs, tranquilizers and stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and marijuana, and comments on "a rational look at drug use." Well-documented with an abundance of relevant quotes and statistics; a rich set of references follow each chapter.

I bought this book to study for a quiz-out test for my Psych major. I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up. I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever! I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text. It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatment--from caffeine to heroin. I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book. It really enforces what you have learned.

Informative and Strictly No-nonsense

This book is the source for unbiased information on the sociological, psychological, pathological effects of "drugs" - this compendium covers everything from caffeine to antipsychotics to alcohol to psychedelics and everything in between. A review of the history of each drug introduces each chapter. Careful attention is paid to not only the effects of the drugs themselves, but the effect which they have on our laws and the way in which treat addiction.

As a former student of Dr. Ray's I can attest to the thoroughness of this work. It is the one book that doesn't tell you what to think about drugs - it provides you with the data to be informed to make your own decision. In fact the DEA uses this book in training! If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for school, your own interest, or just to be informed to talk to your kids, look no further.

Dr. Lemerande is a whirlwind of funny illustrations about how our bodies work: the slapstick repair of a damaged house using junk materials, immune cells that won't "blob" correctly, etc. His digressions are sometimes distracting, if humorous, and some folks may miss the movie references (how many of us have seen "The Blob"?), but you won't miss his point. Dr. L's frank and irreverant style makes absorbing the info painless. I recommend this book to, as his subtitle says, "anyone who eats."

Dr. Lemerande is a whirlwind of clarifying, but funny explanations of how our bodies work. He makes it hard to forget the need for good nutrition with his illustrations: the slapstick repairing of a damaged house using junk materials, immune cells that won't "blob" properly, etc. His occasional humorous digressions can be distracting and some younger people may miss some of the movie references, but this book sure has personality; and Dr. L's very frank, irreverant style gets the info across painlessly. I'd recommend this to, as his subtitle says, "anyone who eats."

Most books on the topic of weight control are facile and frivolous. Not this book! "Eat Fit, Be Fit" gives you what you need for long term success. In depth and intelligent in a very digestable way (pardon the pun) Linda Arpino covers it all. In the difficult fight to maintain a healthy lifestyle this book is both inspiring and practical. Healthy recipes, simple explanations of what you need to know about nutrition, and tips for breaking bad habits and dealing with the emotional issues behind overeating can all be found here. This book is the first step to positive change.

I have read a lot of information on the topic of nutrition and didn't expect this book to be so valuable. It is thoroughly researched, well-written and chock full of delicious recipes. As a busy working professional I appreciate the variety of easy to prepare meals that are nutritious and tasty. Unlike other books on weight management where calorie restriction = boring meals and few choices, you won't feel deprived. Every recipe has a nutrition analysis so that if you're counting calories, carbs, sugar or fat, this is the book for you. Kudos to the author. She has raised the standard.

EAT RIGHT-ELECTROLYTE: A NUTRITIONAL GUIDE TO MINERALS IN OUR DAILY DIET comes from an MD in private practice and provides evidence that the usual American diet does not provide for a healthy balance of electrolytes. The common results of such an imbalance: hypertension, osteoporosis, heart disease and Crohn's disease: all common problems of modern society. Nutritional research documents what makes harmful doses of minerals, what happens when there aren't enough, and advises on how to overcome dietary deficiencies.

Everyone knows, I believe, that excess salt in the diet is linked to high blood pressure, but this book goes further and discusses the role that sodium has in so many other medical conditions (osteoporosis, Crohn's disease, kidney stone, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more). The author is a physician and backs up the text with medical studies (lots of them) done worldwide. This is the kind of book that you can pick and choose sections that interest you, but I found myself reading the entire book. Very informative.

This book came along just at the right time for me.
Last time I lost weight, I still had problems with my blood pressure.
The advice for me to reduce protein, increase fruits & vegetables, lower fat and reduce sodium to 1500 mg was god sent.
I'm following a 1600 calorie diet using the Dash 2001 1500 sodium as a core. The weight's coming off and it's the healthiest diet I've been on in my life.
I'm so glad I found this book. Other than this, I'm using the Diet Power software to track my nutrition.

IT IS NEVER TOO SOON TO INTERVENE BUT OFTEN TOO LATE !
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-16
Why is this book so timely and necessary for parents, teachers, all of us right now ? These are my reasons. IT'S NEVER TOO SOON TO INTERVENE BUT OFTEN TOO LATE !
Lets all get real ! Think ! Most of us in this culture believe in the idea that A PERSON WAS HEALTHY UNTIL DIAGNOSED WITH (lets say) CANCER ! How unfortunate. How sad that even today this is so. Cancer is an accumulation of years, decades of mutation, promotion and progression within cells. Undoubtably, the vast majority of tragic health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, etc. are cumulative processes, that over the years, decades destroy and change the body's natural balancing mechanism, until... well until a real reversal, any real hope of cure is frankly impossible. Clearly, today in 2007, we are sure that "Poor nutrition is one of the most frequent reasons that the immune system malfunctions." Poor to extremly poor nutrition is a daily norm in the majority of households in our culture. There is an un-arguable cause and effect relationship between nutrition, immunity and cancer ! (surely other diseases as well) Why are we so suprised at the accelerated growth in numbers of these serious diseases over the last two decades ?

This is a huge issue, with enormously powerful business interests lined up weighing in on the other side. ( What is this "other side"? It's those powerhouses that are profiting immesurably from and control our industrial food supply production, the marketing and media, the distribution and the franchising. After some time when the consequences of the consumption of such foods assert themselves as they lawfully will, those same powerhouses supply the pharmaceutical products and finally surgical invasive procedures and the facilities to temporarily relieve the symptoms only, so that we can continue to be consumers to them a little longer.)

What are we doing ? How can we continue to tolerate it ? We must THINK CRITICALLY, and have much more doubt, suspicion and less automatic acceptance and belief on this issue. The issue of EATING SMARTER.
World wide, medical professionals working closely with cancer diagnosis and treatment feel that up to 80% of cancer includes poor nutrition as a significant factor. Is it news to anyone that we live in an enviroment which is not conducive to optimum health promotion, with pollution of our air and water, the adulteration of our food and the additional disharmony of the chronic tensions in us, induced by our present social, political and economic cultural life ? These factors individually are known to have cancer causing properties, but with the sum of it all weighing on us daily, shouldn't we do what we can; where we can ? In re-THINKING our food choices as suppliers of vitally needed nutritions for our life, essential elements for our health, energy, for clear mind and heart and yes therefore happiness, we make the first and most significant step in the right direction.
Only a few people really believe in and act on, prevention ! Let's hope that the number of those few believers grows and inspires the world with much more than just hope, but with "this new knowledge", so that all can benefit ! I know this author. This is the deep knowledge and wisdom gained from her own challenges, that this author shares with us on this most important subject at hand. She has truly helped a very large number of seriously suffering people over many years. This book is for little kids and big kids. Lets always remember that it is NEVER TOO SOON TO INTERVENE BUT OFTEN TOO LATE !

Eat Smarter makes it a lot easier to understand food and why it's important to eat smarter and make better choices. The comic book that comes with this book is very cool and funny and I learned more about food then I ever knew or was taught in school. The recipes look like healthy food can also taste good. This book makes me ready to try a new way.

An Excellent book to help parents to help their kids to lose weight

This is an interesting diet book with two parts. The first part contains information to educate parents to help their kids to lose weight, and it contains lots of ideas and good recipes. The recipes are separate by breakfast, lunch, dinner and treats. They are easy to use and delicious enough to get your kids to eat those (e.g. Baked French Fries, Polenta Pizza, guacamole and even banana ice cream)
The second part is a separate color comic book so the kids can read it by themselves.
If you have overweight kids, you know the last thing your kids want is to hear you talk about their weight. The comic book is a good idea to educate your kids about food choice without harassing them all the time.

"Top secret tips revealed..."
Kathleen Beisel offers sound, practical advice to her readers. She begins her book, Eat Your Way to Natural Good Health, by discussing stress and its effects on the body. There are lots of tips in this book including: 4-6 small meals a day are easier for the body to digest. Chew your food, so that it is easier for the body to digest. Do not skip breakfast. Do not consume processed foods.
One section suggests which vitamins you might be lacking if you have certain symptoms. Beisel discusses dehydration, cholesterol, pork (which I will never eat again),and many other pertinent subjects.
I had recently decided that my weight problem was because I make bad choices. After reading Eat Your Way to Natural Good Health, I know that I was right. Now, I am better educated to make those choices.
Eat Your Way to Natural Good Health is well written and easy to read. Kathleen Beisel is a Clinical Nutrition Consultant.

This and Dr. Matsen's first Eating Alive book (see www.eatingalive.com) are two of the most important books I have read in my life. I read the first book in one sitting at the book store, and found it as if lead by an unseen force (I felt guided to go to the bookstore, rode my bike there, and once inside the store, went straight up the escalators, to the natural health bookshelf, and BAM! my eyes hit Eating Alive and I just KNEW I had found exactly what I needed and I bought the book after spending 3 hours in the bookstore reading it from cover to cover and feeling like I had found the secret of the universe).

What you learn from these books will help you break free from the chains of disinformation and ignorance and motivate and equip you to take charge of your health. Dr. Matsen is very honest, he spares neither fiction nor lies from the light of truth, and he is deeply concerned with your self-reliance. He sees the role of the doctor as someone who guides patients to liberate themselves and whom the patient ideally will never have to see again once the health problem is solved at the ROOT. Which means working WITH the natural laws of health instead of fighting against the body and treating it like a faulty constructed mechanistic machine. That is not true!

Dr. Matsen inspires you to TRUST in your body, instead of despising it and blaming it and declaring war on it.

You'll be interested to know that I liked the Eating Alive books so much, and was so impressed with the results after trying out the recommendations (I was suffering from terrible digestive problems - and refused conventional, drug-based treatment - a very good decision) that me and my mother flew out to Vancouver to visit with him. Amazing practice, great staff, very generous with his time (and incredibly low visit fees), great health recommendations... but that's another story.

GET THE BOOK! Everyone in the World who isn't following Dr. Matsen's 10 steps to health needs to know about them. Major health problems could be in the future for those who don't learn and apply them.

As you take charge of your health, you will start taking charge of everything else in your life. And if you persist and stick with it, you will enter a new life.

Don't wait on the government or the conventional pharmaceutical-salesmen doctors (most if not majority of MDs are clueless about the natural laws of health and healing). They are stuck in the dark ages of medicine. Educate yourself and seek the answers independently.

Dr. Matsen is probably one of the best guides to natural health on the planet. Don't miss this opportunity - you have been guided here as I was guided back at the bookstore - don't turn your back on your amazing blessing.

Other good doctors I recommend you learn from:
Dr. Michael Lyon (www.mindpublishing.com)
Dr. Tim O'Shea (www.thedoctorwithin.com)

The book it is very interesting. Specially for people who are health-oriented. It deals with many different alternative ways of treating conditions and intruduces the average reader to new topics and concepts. One of the sections I liked the most, was the one dealing with mercury fillings (amalgam fillings) and their impact on health. It was impressing to read about all the conditions that can be improved by the solely fact of correclty removing silver fillings. I encourage every one to take action.

The book should be read by:

-doctors and dentist who want to keep updated themselves
-anyone with amalgams (silver fillings)
-people interested in alternative medicine.

Very good book!

I bought this book about two years ago, and I love. First off, it teaches you discipline in the food department. Before I bought this book I would eat whatever, this book helps you eat more of the things that you should like fruits and vegetables, with the point system for every fruit and vegetable you eat (depending on the ounces) you get to subtract a point. I've lost at least 5 to 6 pounds (I'm already on the thin side), a healthy way, coupled with exercise of course. I recommend this book for any one. You have nothing to loose but weight!!!!I suprised at the price because this book is worth a lot more.

If you are a person who has tried Weight Watchers before and just needs to have a little "tweaking" done in the diet department, then this is your book. Sometimes, I feel we need to bust through a plateau by "mixing it up" a little bit. I know that I like the idea of counting "points" (Weight Watchers-style), but I wanted to try another version of "points". This book is that option. I have lost 52 pounds since April 12th. Thank you, Michael Mogadam for opening up another option!

You want to be healthy and fit. You want to live a long life. But you want to eat like a pig and sit on your la-z-boy too? Guess what? You can't!

This book is easy to read and informative. It had a lot of common sense sandwiched between medical know-how.

The THI scoring system is easy to follow, I think, and not too restrictive. You might not like the fact that eating at Denny's is out but I personally would rather live half a dozen years longer because I gave up the Grand Slam breakfast.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book and read it. Unlike so many other books on the market, Dr. Mogadam doesn't seem to be selling anything but the truth, and the price is very low!

Interested in sustainable agriculture? Look no further. In "The Eco-Foods Guide", Cynthia Barstow helps us navigate the complex issues surrounding food security and in clear, accessible language illustrates how our everyday food choices impact the planet. That said, this book, which is written in a friendly, conversational voice, is anything but a dry read. In fact, it's really rather fun. (Granted I am extremely passionate about food politics!) As a long-time natural foodist and someone with a lot of experience working in the field of organic foods, I highly recommend this guide. It's very comprehensive and covers everything from biodynamic farming to community supported agriculture to why you should only buy shade-grown, fair trade, organic coffee. It also discusses the grave environmental dangers of biotechnology. At the risk of sounding new-agey, I must also agree with the underlying spiritual message of this book. Eating local, seasonal, organic food really does help you re-connect with the earth. It's time we once again remember that food is holy! As all of life is interconnected, what's good for the earth is good for you!

The Eco-Foods Guide is an indispensable resource for the consumer who wants to go beyond reading labels and really delve into the truth about where our food comes from. Cynthia Barstow's conversational style is readable and down to earth--she answers the questions that loom in our heads as we make choices at the grocery store. She discusses the issues of buying organic vs. non organic, the benefits of buying locally, and she de-mysifies GMO's and what role they play in our food. Barstow also inlcludes helpful websites for futher purusing. As a mother of a two year old, I am grateful for this accessible guide--keep in a handy place!

Barstow's Eco-Foods is a well-thought out book that focuses on: local, organic, seasonal qualities of the food we should eat. The book is easy reading and optimistic, full of pro-active and productive actions we could take. Eco-foods brings in a thorough historical background of important topics. While I consider myself well-read and informed on modern food issues, Cynthia enlightened me on subjects such as genetic drift, genetically modified, terminator technology, labeling, salmon waste, pouring rights, and more. The book flows with a compendium of who's who in the field (like Rachel Carson, Frances Moore Lappe, Thomas Berry, and many more), listing of relevant websites in an easy to see manner, shopping tips, brief vignettes on subjects that are discussed. I will use Eco-Foods as a resource for my good foods purchases.

The Eco-Foods Guide: What's Good For The Earth Is Good For You! by sustainable agriculture and consumer advocate Cynthia Barstow is a very practical and "user friendly" consumer's guide to shopping the grocery-store aisles. Individual chapters cogently teach the reader about confusing yet critically important terms on grocery shelf cans, boxes and labels such as shade-grown, IPM-certified, GMO-free, biodynamic, and more, as well as offering sound and invaluable advice for shopping at farmer's markets, buying local produce, being aware of what edibles are being purchased for consumption, and generally regarding food as a sacred part of life itself. The Eco-Foods guide is very highly recommended, indispensable reading for anyone concerned with seeking out alternatives to the overly processed, additive contaminated, preservative laden, and chemically adulterated and synthesized and genetically altered foods that can (and do) significantly contribute to contemporary health problems.

I read F-Plan Diet years ago, tried it and lost weight. The weight stayed off much easier than with fad diets. A diagnosis of diabetes brought me back to Audrey Eyton's diet book, F-Plan. I ate 1000 calories, diabetic recommended amount of carbohydrates and 35-50 grams of fiber daily. In six months I lost over 50 lbs. My blood sugars were in the 80's even after eating meals. I added a few more supplements that really cemented the restoration of my pancreatic system. No shots, no pills! Just exercise 20-30 minutes daily and the F-Plan Diet. I kept a daily journal of my counts and progress and eating plan. On days when I was resistant to planning the next days meals, I would simply find a menu from my journal. Nothing could be easier! Love the Daily Fiber Filler cereal recipe! My doctor is pleased and so am I.
