The book 'The Ram Nut Diet' ia a very useful and novel weight loss resource for the dieting consumer. It's an easy read and covers all the important elements of successful weight loss--proper nutrition, exercise, motivation, menus and recipes--with a twist--using nuts as a natural appetite suppressant. Dr. Ram is a rarity among diet doctors, since he actually has extensive credentials in nutrition. Highly recommended., J. LaRosa, Tampa, FL (16-year diet market consultant/analyst)

The Ram Nut Diet offers a new approach for weight loss that incorporates nuts in the diet as a means to reduce carbohydrates, control hunger, and decrease calories. Decreasing calories is the key to all weight loss diets. Given the current obesity crisis in the U.S. and worldwide, with no end in sight, there is a pressing need for innovative approaches to weight loss. There is an urgent need to help people lose weight by restricting calories and increasing physical activity (which results in negative calorie balance and weight loss). The Ram Nut Diet takes a new approach by recommending nuts, a nutrient dense food that contain heart healthy fats, to help control energy intake by controlling dietary carbohydrates.

Dr. Ram recommends a sensible approach for incorporating a wide variety of nuts in the diet - portion control is foremost in the recommendations put forth in the book. Unlike numerous diet books on the market, Dr. Ram recommends a program of physical activity in conjunction with his weight loss diet. There are many scientific studies that have shown the importance of physical activity in maintaining sustained weight loss. Other strengths of the diet program include: a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates; a support system (e.g. coach); and daily self-monitoring of food intake, exercise, and attitudes and life's events that affect adherence to the diet program. The 14 day meal plan and menu and recipes are an added bonus of the book. Collectively, the Ram Nut Diet recommends a healthy weight loss diet, physical activity, and behavior modification, all of which are current recommendations of many different professional organizations for healthy weight loss.

A distinguishing feature of this diet program is the focus on nuts as part of a weight loss program. Nuts are a powerhouse of nutrition including unsaturated fats (both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats), plant protein, fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B-6, niacin, magnesium, copper, zinc, and potassium, all of which are important for health. Often times, weight loss diets lack essential nutrients because calories are reduced. Including a handful of nuts (about 1 oz.) helps meet nutrient needs in a calorie-restricted diet. Nuts also include a variety of bioactive compounds including ellagic acid, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and isoflavones that have been shown to have beneficial health effects.

Readers who follow the Ram Nut Diet will benefit from the many health attributes of nuts. Also, by following the Ram Nut Diet, readers will be able to lose weight, and maintain lost weight with a sensible nutrition program.

I thought this was a great book. I am a pollo-vegetarian, and I have been concerned about the health issues. This really helped me understand this is healthier and why. It also introduced me to new foods. I didn't really know much about about tofu, hummus, etc., but it breaks everything down for you. Great book!

I recommend this book for those who are following vegetarian or vegan diets, or thoe who are thinking about changing their eating habits.

Its reassuring tone made me feel that I CAN stick with a healthy, vegetarian diet.

Chapters on nutrition were informative and easy to read, but didn't answer questions such as: WHY do I need this nutrient? If you're looking for more specifics on nutrition, you may need to look elsewhere.

The book provides simple, logical tips for vegetarian survival while eating out.

There are a variety of sample menus (but no recipes), and a good list of other resources such as organizations, books, and web sites.

This book is a wonderful source of information for the beginning or intermediate vegetarian or vegan (I was happily suprised by the amount of vegan information included in the book).

This book helps answer all of the questions vegetarians are bound to face on a daily basis. How do you get enough protein? Iron? Calcium? Etc.... It also has specific sections on vegetarian diets for pregnant women, children, teens, athletes, and older people. As well as helpful info on easing the transition to a vegetarian diet.

I would also recommend this book for non-vegetarians who have friends or family members who folllow a vegetarian diet. It explains in easy-to-understand detail the different kinds of vegetarian diets, and things to keep in mind when one or more of your dinner guests are (or will be) vegetarian.

I went browsing for a book on the vegetarian lifestyle when I started considering the option. I picked it out because it was the smallest book. Wise choice. It's small, but it's packed with useful information and it's straight to the point. It explained the types of vegetarians and how to obtain all the nutrition that you need in each lifestyle. It's a small book, but packed with information and can be used as a quick and easy reference after reading. I highly recommend this little book!

This is a fantastic book of good, easy to use recipes. The diabetic exchange groups are listed with each recipe and a full nutrition analysis, for recipes in the book, is listed at the end of each section. If you need this extra information to carefully control your diet, it's in this book. Some of the main dishes are complete, including protein, starch, and vegetable in one quick to prepare dish. This book can make cooking fun and less stressful if you need to follow the diabetic food exchange.

I was in a panic having just learned the importance of following a diabetic diet plan. It is crucial to maintaining good health and preventing further problems for diabetics. The diet plan (which you need to get from a dietician in order to use this book effectively) was prescribed but we couldn't envision following it on a day to day basis. This book really helped us get started right away. The use of pictures and lists simplifies what at first seemed like a maze. I highly recommend it if you (have already received your diabetic diet plan and) feel you'd like a little hand holding during your learning process... and then some

This cookbook features meals from salads to desserts as well as snacks and special treats for better health for everyone. With recipes from Better Homes & Gardens Diabetic Cookbook, meals can be made considering the needs of a diabetic without 'singling-out' that person with an unusual plate of food. These are delicious meals with the food exchange system used (a list is at the back of the book for making following meal plans easier). Even attractive garnishes are suggested so these recipes can be used to appeal to more than just the palate. Normal ingredients in the pantry or easily purchased at the local grocery store make these meals do-able.This is a practical purchase for any home and a must-have for those with diabetes.

1,001 HEALTH SECRETS by Betty Kamen is a wonderful book: fascinating, all-encompassing, and crammed full of such vitally important information that it has fundamentally changed the way I think about food and nutrition. The best part is the format: it's so well organized and simple to use, you can just flip to the section you're interested in and quickly read the short, to-the-point health hints that you can put into practice that very day! And the way the hints are linked is also brilliant: after reading about, for example, the benefits of green tea against cancer, the hint will direct you to other hints to learn more of the story; that is, what other diseases and health problems green tea (or whatever the supplement, food, or vitamin in question) can help to prevent. In fact, it's so fascinating to see how so much about health and nutrition is interlinked, you can get (happily) sucked into the book for hours...not many health books can claim that! And for the "Scullys" out there, EVERY SINGLE HINT is backed up by hard science and cutting-edge research, published in the most recent medical journals (all the journals are cited). Every time I hear of a new supplement or see something unfamiliar in the health food store, I rush to my copy of this book to look it up and get the whole story. There's nothing else like it.

It is my pleasure to review "1001 Health Secrets." I find the book to be well wriiten, pleasant to read, and most importantly full of useful and timely information. In a world where there is as much nutritional misinformation as reliable information circulating I am delighted that Dr. Kamen has pulled togther a referenced resource to help anyone sort fact from fiction. Many people have shared with me that they have given up believing that the nutritional information they hear is right as the tidbits of nutritioional wisdom broadcast by the news media seem to change and are often contradictory. However, there is a stable and growing body of knowledge that is data-based (backed by research). When examined as a whole the credible research studies actually do support each other. Betty Kamen is masterful at sharing results of valid research and helps create the big picture of what is healthful. This book does an excellent job at pulling together many aspects of what is known about best nutritional practice with clear explanations, all referenced to mainstream medical and nutritional literature.

I've dabbled occasionally with Nicole Ronsard's philosophy for over 20 years but didn't take her approach seriously until now. Something to do with turning 50. I wanted to be in shape again. Walking five times a week helped a little but still didn't get rid of my riding thighs, lumpy legs, and thick knees. The cellulite was beginning to appear on my stomach also. At 5'10" and 165 lbs I didn't look overweight but after the first 6 weeks of following her plan I lost 14 lbs. My legs and rear end are sleeker, pants fit better and I am able to wear shorts without embarrasment. My knees are thinner, I look healthy and feel great! To those people who tell you that you can't lose cellulite, they are wrong. If you follow this plan you can show them it really can be done. Then you can reap the rewards of feeling great and knowing you look great! Good luck !

Beyond Cellulite is a brilliant book which mainly focuses on a new way of life rather than a get healthy quick routine. It covers everthing from diet and excersise to mental health. If you feel yourself slacking, read a couple of chapters and you will be back on track. I followed it when I was pregnant. As a result I had a wonderful pregnancy, a better figure and no cellulite after my baby was born. Unfortunately, I lent the book to a friend who never returned it. Hence visiting this site for another copy. Good Luck!

I was really surprised to learn about the sodium/potassium balance that plays such a big role in cellulite. I was very impressed with the author's encouragement to eat raw fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and sprouts etc. I have been studying (and practicing) raw foodism for a little while on and off and considering this book was written in 1995 (and that was the second edition!) I am truly glad to see that the raw food movement is - once again - not a new concept and truly is the best way to eat. The ideas that she presents are fairly basic, but then again, she has an almost vegetarian way of eating which also is encouraging. Even though some of what she writes would seem obvious, it goes beyond. It's worth purchasing and seeing if it makes a difference in your life.

Blue is having a snack party. All her friends are bringing snacks. We discover what each is by lifting flaps that show the ingredients and recipe with the finished dish underneath. These are healthy snacks made by Steve, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Mailbox, Tickety Tock, Shovel & Pail, and Magenta. In the meantime we help Steve solve Blue's Clues to discover what snack Blue will bring. A final picture of everyone with their snacks suggests the upcoming party will be festive indeed.

A nice addition to the Blue's books.

Is this remarkable, breakthrough program? No, not really. What it IS, however, is a practical, no-nonsense book that seeks to educate readers about basic nutrition, as well as the psychological barriers to losing weight. Robyn Landis cuts through the fog created by the diet industry and confronts the obsession dieters have with the numbers on the scale, arguing instead for a more healthy, balanced relationship with food. I highly recommend this book!

This excellent book helps you to understand why you get fat---the bad habits and illogical drives that cause you to eat more than you need. Getting back into a healthy balance requires knowledge, not just starving yourself. If you have the knowledge, then you don't have to starve yourself---but can actually enjoy eating, knowing it's for your good and not for your ultimate ill health. Buy this book and read it, word by word. It can open up your eyes!

This book really opened my eyes to some of the scientific facts about nutrition. Two months later, I'm 12 'fat' pounds thinner, feeling great, happily eating all day long, and never feeling hungry. One of the main pluses is I'm over the 'terminal' depression I'd been sinking into over the last few years constantly thinking that if I was going to be thin, I was going to spend every day the rest of my life starving myself! What a relief!

Review Date: 2001-02-19
I purchased this book on a whim, and have never regretted it. Robyn Landis explains clearly and rationally why diets don't work, how the body uses food, and why it stores fat. She outlines a balanced, common-sense approach that involves eating small meals at regular intervals (every 3-4 hours). I appreciated the author's emphasis on becoming lean (as opposed to "losing weight"), and her emphasis on personal responsibility when it comes to health. Readers are encouraged to trust their own instincts and body signals when it comes to hunger and food.

It is possible to adapt meals to accommodate vegetarian preferences. Within days, this way of eating was second nature to me and I was very happy with the increased energy I experienced.

I highly recommend this book! If you are looking for a simple, healthy, and sustainable way of becoming leaner and healthier, "BodyFueling" may be for you.

Really!! The books gives great encouragement and advice. It also is a great reference if you do have a problem. The New Mom Journal is AWESOME. You can track your feedings and the babies output so you know the baby is getting enough. Definely get this book if you are even considering breastfeeding. Part 1 is "The Practical Breastfeeding Manual" which explains every aspect of breast feeding basics and helps new parents identify and appropriately manage early breast feeding difficulties and common newborn problems. Part 2 is "The Complete Nutrition and Weight Loss Guide" showing the nursing mother how to maintain her own good health and provide her baby with an optimal milk supply, while safely and naturally returning to her prepregnancy weight. Part 3 is "The Six-Week Nursing Diary with the Nurse-N-Track System", a two-part diary for easy monitoring of breast feeding progress during the first six weeks postpartum. Part 4 is "The New Mother's Journal" offering a place to record precious memories of the first days of motherhood with specific questions, ideas starters and inspirational quotations to inspire creative journal writing. Bon Appetit, Baby! is an ideal gift and "must" reading for anyone contemplating breast feeding their baby.

I bought this book mainly because the "Six Week Nursing Diary with the Nurse and Track System" seemed like a simple way to keep track of my newborn's feeding habits. Having successfully nursed my first child, I wasn't looking for another "how to" book on breastfeeding. However I found the info in this book was presented very clearly and concisely and wished I had bought it before the birth of my 1st child. It covers all the breastfeeding basics thus making it a good "refresher guide" for experienced moms and a good "getting started guide" for new moms. Plus the nursing diary is wonderful! I recommend buying this book for your basic breastfeeding needs and buying a more complete reference book for info pertaining to specific problems that may arise.

Although the title indicates that this book is useful only for the caregiver of an athlete that is incorrect. The emphasis on proper nutrition is something that all people should learn and practice and the advice on activities such as how to properly warm up, train and work out is applicable to all serious physical activity. Finally, the discussion of the value of athletic competitions in building social skills, responsibility, a sense of achievement and how to deal with failure is an additional positive aspect of the book.

Note: Branner is also the author of two others book with the titles "The Care and Feeding of a Soccer Player" and `The Care and Feeding of a Dancer." A lot of the text in those books is identical to this one, so if you buy one you for some practical purposes have the other two.

The book covers the exercise, mental, emotional, and nutritional aspects of raising a kid who enjoys sports

Toni Tickel Branner has three books out on the "Care & Feeding of ...". While there are differences in this book (the quotes and some non-soccer advice) a lot of the language is exactly the same. My first review was of her book for the soccer player. So, I don't think you need all three. Just pick the one that is most focused on what it is you do. Just as she has adapted her text, I have only slightly altered my review.

We all know that exercising our bodies is good for us. We also know that real life is full of competition and there is winning and losing in all that we do. Athletics lets us exercise, have fun, and learn about competition when the stakes seem big, but are usually small. Organized sports consume more and more time in the life of many American children and young adults. As the author notes, "you learn to push yourself to your fullest potential, learn to take criticism as a compliment, and learn to gain confidence from each experience."

The author takes a responsible approach to fitness, nutrition, and competing to enhance your child's life, not consume it. Besides her own experience as an exercise physiologist, she has a board of medical and exercise experts who, I assume, looked over this material.

She also realizes that kids play sports differently and have different skill requirements according to age or grade level. Her advice for playing, learning skills, and warming up take all this in mind. I particularly like her discussion of common injury types and what you can do to prevent them. She also discusses the mental and emotional aspects of the game, including handling stress. Her food advice is quite good; if a bit too vegetarian for my tastes, but nothing here will be anything but good for you. She also deals with body image and distorted eating.

The author also guides you through getting the most from sports camp, how to be good sideline parents, and what to think about to become a successful and happy sports family. She also has a chapter on life lessons that can be learned from sports.

Good stuff.

Too many kids and parents are pushing themselves to hard on and off the field. Branner teaches kids and parents how to take care of the young athlete and make sure they are around and healthy for those all important college years. Fantastic nutritional advice maximizes health and shows the importance of water, anti-oxidants and proper eating as a vital part of a young athletes road to collegiate or professional sports success.
