Benefit from the many health attributes of nutsReview Date: 2005-07-08
Dr. Ram recommends a sensible approach for incorporating a wide variety of nuts in the diet - portion control is foremost in the recommendations put forth in the book. Unlike numerous diet books on the market, Dr. Ram recommends a program of physical activity in conjunction with his weight loss diet. There are many scientific studies that have shown the importance of physical activity in maintaining sustained weight loss. Other strengths of the diet program include: a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates; a support system (e.g. coach); and daily self-monitoring of food intake, exercise, and attitudes and life's events that affect adherence to the diet program. The 14 day meal plan and menu and recipes are an added bonus of the book. Collectively, the Ram Nut Diet recommends a healthy weight loss diet, physical activity, and behavior modification, all of which are current recommendations of many different professional organizations for healthy weight loss.
A distinguishing feature of this diet program is the focus on nuts as part of a weight loss program. Nuts are a powerhouse of nutrition including unsaturated fats (both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats), plant protein, fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B-6, niacin, magnesium, copper, zinc, and potassium, all of which are important for health. Often times, weight loss diets lack essential nutrients because calories are reduced. Including a handful of nuts (about 1 oz.) helps meet nutrient needs in a calorie-restricted diet. Nuts also include a variety of bioactive compounds including ellagic acid, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and isoflavones that have been shown to have beneficial health effects.
Readers who follow the Ram Nut Diet will benefit from the many health attributes of nuts. Also, by following the Ram Nut Diet, readers will be able to lose weight, and maintain lost weight with a sensible nutrition program.

Educational But Not DryReview Date: 2000-06-15
Easy-to-read guideReview Date: 2000-01-24
Its reassuring tone made me feel that I CAN stick with a healthy, vegetarian diet.
Chapters on nutrition were informative and easy to read, but didn't answer questions such as: WHY do I need this nutrient? If you're looking for more specifics on nutrition, you may need to look elsewhere.
The book provides simple, logical tips for vegetarian survival while eating out.
There are a variety of sample menus (but no recipes), and a good list of other resources such as organizations, books, and web sites.
Not just for idiots! (Not just for vegetarians either!)Review Date: 2000-01-17
This book helps answer all of the questions vegetarians are bound to face on a daily basis. How do you get enough protein? Iron? Calcium? Etc.... It also has specific sections on vegetarian diets for pregnant women, children, teens, athletes, and older people. As well as helpful info on easing the transition to a vegetarian diet.
I would also recommend this book for non-vegetarians who have friends or family members who folllow a vegetarian diet. It explains in easy-to-understand detail the different kinds of vegetarian diets, and things to keep in mind when one or more of your dinner guests are (or will be) vegetarian.

Simple easy to use explanations/recipes for new diabetics.Review Date: 1997-06-26
I was in a panic having just learned the importance of following a diabetic diet plan. It is crucial to maintaining good health and preventing further problems for diabetics. The diet plan (which you need to get from a dietician in order to use this book effectively) was prescribed but we couldn't envision following it on a day to day basis. This book really helped us get started right away. The use of pictures and lists simplifies what at first seemed like a maze. I highly recommend it if you (have already received your diabetic diet plan and) feel you'd like a little hand holding during your learning process... and then some

Advice that can be applied to all forms of physical activityReview Date: 2008-07-15
Note: Branner is also the author of two others book with the titles "The Care and Feeding of a Soccer Player" and `The Care and Feeding of a Dancer." A lot of the text in those books is identical to this one, so if you buy one you for some practical purposes have the other two.
The book covers the exercise, mental, emotional, and nutritional aspects of raising a kid who enjoys sportsReview Date: 2008-07-15
We all know that exercising our bodies is good for us. We also know that real life is full of competition and there is winning and losing in all that we do. Athletics lets us exercise, have fun, and learn about competition when the stakes seem big, but are usually small. Organized sports consume more and more time in the life of many American children and young adults. As the author notes, "you learn to push yourself to your fullest potential, learn to take criticism as a compliment, and learn to gain confidence from each experience."
The author takes a responsible approach to fitness, nutrition, and competing to enhance your child's life, not consume it. Besides her own experience as an exercise physiologist, she has a board of medical and exercise experts who, I assume, looked over this material.
She also realizes that kids play sports differently and have different skill requirements according to age or grade level. Her advice for playing, learning skills, and warming up take all this in mind. I particularly like her discussion of common injury types and what you can do to prevent them. She also discusses the mental and emotional aspects of the game, including handling stress. Her food advice is quite good; if a bit too vegetarian for my tastes, but nothing here will be anything but good for you. She also deals with body image and distorted eating.
The author also guides you through getting the most from sports camp, how to be good sideline parents, and what to think about to become a successful and happy sports family. She also has a chapter on life lessons that can be learned from sports.
Good stuff.
