A little book for everything you need to know about long term health

This book has changed our way of eating - the easy way. It is motivating to read how each 'super' food benefits your health, great little recipes to help incorporate the new food in your life. I liked that the book touches on the subjects of porton, sleep, exercise and blood pressure. It is an all rounded book that pulls a lot of good facts into one easy to read source. Forget about diet books ... try this and I have already noticed a change in my health: more energy, improved immune system, loosing weight the healthy way (you do need to exercise!)

I strongly suggest you start incorporating each food type into your diet as you go through the book, or pick what appeals to you first. Otherwise, you'll have a good read with no action. Great if you have cholesterol/high blood pressure as a lot of the superfood seems to focus on these key areas.

Great Book for Improving Your Diet

Several months ago I purchased this book along with "Joy Bauer's Food Cures" and "What Color is Your Diet" by David Heber. I found that "SuperFoods HealthStyle" was by far the best choice of the three. It is well organized, gave clear information about the benefits (or drawbacks) of various foods, and gave suggestions that made it easy to incorporate the desired foods in my diet. The book also includes other, non dietary, information (such as exercise) to improve your health. If you, like myself, have an interest in improving your diet, "SuperFoods HealthStyle" will give you the resources to make numerous positive changes. This book has changed my diet, and therefore my life, for the better.

I picked this book up in a cruise ship library and couldn't put it down. In fact at the end of the cruise I quickly scribbled down as much information out of the book as I could so I could have references pages until I could buy a copy. Coming off of a low carb diet I was specifically after good quality "carb" foods that I could start eating with out the fear of weight gain. Although I didn't pay much attention to the excercise topics that forwarded each section I really enjoyed all of the food information. There aren't really that many recipes in this book and the ones I've tried aren't exactly delicious. But the amount of information on specific foods and ideas on how to work them into a normal diet with ease was extensive. I would reccommend this book to anyone on a quest to just eat and feel healthier.

Change your life

Steven Pratt and Kathy Matthews have come up with a marvelous way for you to improve your health, and change your life. Rather than (like most diet books) telling you to give anything up, they encourage you to "add" things to your diet which will make a major difference in how you look and feel over the long haul. Most diet books insist you cut out "this", or cut out "that", or at least minimize the food to some small dime-sized portion. Pratt and Matthews, on the other hand, believe that it is what you are "not" eating that is holding you back from achieving your optimum health, and so their books are focused on getting you to add those foods to your diet. Their first book (SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life) is actually the one you should read first. It is organized in an extremely logical way, and leads the reader gently yet authoritatively into the concept of adding only 14 foods, making a huge difference in your health. Their second book (SuperFoods Healthstyle) adds an additional 10 foods to the mix (for a total of 24), yet the book lacks some of the instant readability and understandability of the first book. My honest recommendation is that you start with the first book (SuperFoods Rx), whether you buy it or just borrow it from the library. Then, when you've read the basics in a clear and understandable way, buy this second book (SuperFoods HealthStyle) which includes virtually all the information from the first book, also includes a great amount of additional information on exercise and sleep and other health practices, but is not quite formatted in as clear a way as SuperFoods Rx. Aside from my slight critique of the organization of this second book, I want to emphatically say that Steven Pratt and Kathy Matthews have come up with an easy-to-implement strategy for adding terrific foods and nutrients to your diet, that will truly "change your life", and may even add years of good and vibrant health to your life. And as a final enticement, let me just add that "dark chocolate" is one of the 24 SuperFoods. I mean, is this a diet? Yes, and it really works! But it's much more than a diet. It's a plan to change how you look at food and your health.

This is a GREAT book! Simple ways to use REAL foods (not just supplements) to use on a regular basis to get and keep oneself and family healthy!
There are even a few recipes and plenty of ideas. My fussy, I hate it if it's healthy husband will even eat many of these foods and those he won't ,
there are ways to disguise these foods w/in other foods =+)
Very much a book I would recommend to all.

Catherine Watson-Genna's wealth of experience and knowledge in the area of breastfeeding, and more specifically, the feeding of babies with various anatomical anomolies, makes for a priceless resource for lactation consultants and doctors. In my opinion, this book should be read and referred to often by any health care provider who routinely deals with breastfeeding infants and/or their mothers.

This book is perfect for many individuals; whether you are a medical professional, lactation consultant, or a new mom seeking the most up to date information in the field of lactation, this book covers all the bases.
Although this is a medical text(which more often than not are dry as toast,) Ms. Watson Genna's writing is absorbing and insightful. It provides answers that many pracitioners need in a clear, concise manner. Anyone working with breastfeeding mothers, either prenatally or post partum, should have this book in their library. Bravo!

Bursting with hard-to-find information, this book features some of the finest minds in the world offering cutting-edge insights on challenges that lactation consultants and other health-care professionals face every day. In her own chapters, editor Catherine Watson Genna addresses tongue tie, sensory integration problems, neurological issues and other topics. Chapter authors include international luminaries such as Nils Bergman, Christina Smillie, Rebecca Glover, Diane Wiessinger, Linda Smith, and Kerstin Nyqvist. This book is a must-have for anyone working with breastfeeding families, including occupational therapists and speech-and-language pathologists, whose training is often based primarily on bottle-feeding norms.

After working with mothers and babies for over 35 years, it is rare when I find a book on breastfeeding that really excites me or teaches me something new. This book is both challenging and thought provoking. My colleagues and I have already had discussions about re-examining how we evaluate a baby's sucking skills. I wish I could afford to give this book to every pediatrician, ENT, and speech therapist who has told me that a baby didn't have any problems suckling or wasn't tongue tied. Hopefully this book will help shift the knowledge paradigm about infant suck and a babies ability to breastfeed. It should be required reading for anyone who works with babies.

I found this book motivated me to get out and do something more physically active. The premise is that anything is better than nothing and any little activity will get you moving and eventually onto bigger and better activities. I like to dance with my son, chase my son to get him dressed and changed, and play with my dogs. It's a start.

This is a very good book for those who are just starting on a fitness program, mainly because the enthusiasm displayed by the author is inspiring. What impressed me the most was instead of dictating a specific type of excersise (weights, running, etc...) Boyd recomends that an individual should develop their fitness program around activities they enjoy, and he emphasizes his point strongly. I myself have learned from experience that if you don't like a particular form of excersise you won't stick to it. When I was in college I hated lifting weights but I would play racquetball till I dropped. Guess what I did more often? I strongly recomend this book to the beginning fitness enthusiast.

An anthropologist once told me that certain human beings are touched by the hand of God. Lucia Capodilupo is one of these creative, insightful, and profound authors. This book is not "yet another" trendy solution to excessive weight gain. Bypassing the quick fix, Lucia focuses on the trials of the human soul. Her writing is clear and her suggestions full of wisdom and promise.

This is a wonderful book! In "Thin Through The Power Of Spirit" Lucia Capodilupo shares her ideas of how to "Create Paradise in Your Weight and World". Instead of focusing on fat grams and calories etc. Lucia suggests we look to the Spirit within us all to find permanent weight loss. "The first step to permanent weight loss begins in the soul" according to Lucia. Lucia gives you mental exercises to do to become more aware of your spirituality. By doing so Lucia believes you can accomplish the type of body weight that is right for you. Exercises include learning to practise self forgiveness, to treat your body with love, to learn the art of gratitude etc. The techniques she shares are powerful and life changing. She also shares wonderful techniques to help resist temptation. I think the book is a wonderful guide to developing greater spirituality and creating the healthy life we desire.

Lucia Capodilupo's book is the answer for all who want to reach and maintain normal weight, whether the unwanted weight gain is minor or serious. In it she captures the essence of permanent weight loss through spiritual change. Her clear writing and powerful techniques for making peace with the physical world, understanding the meaning and function of excess weight, and accessing "perfect" form (which already exists) resonate as Universal truths in the reader.

Capodilupo, who earned a Ph.D. in Russian literature at Yale, teaches us how to define our purpose and commit to making our body, life, and environment works of art. The reader gains a new sense of self-worth and well-being -- expressed by the body through perfect weight!

An effective, in-depth, practical, accessible plan.

Thin Through The Power Of Spirit: Creating Paradise In Your Weight & World makes the startling disclosure that excessive overweight is a spiritual problem, the root cause of which lies in the mind. the seriously overweight person is subconsciously unhappy with, and warring against, their own physical incarnation. With this perception that the "soul" or self is caught in the fleshy prison of the body, the compulsion to overeat takes over -- a symbolic acting-out of this imprisonment. The cure for excess weight lies in remembering that in the flesh, one is not meant to suffer. Permanent weight loss is possible when body reverence replaces body hatred , and weight-loss efforts are then seen as part of a larger commitment to creating Paradise on Earth. Thin Through The Power Of Spirit shows readers how to change their world view, psychology, body image, and food choices so that they can move out of the prison of excess weight and into conditions of normal weight and increased freedom. Author Lucia Capodilupo offers an effective in-depth plan that can, quite literally, change the reader's weight and life forever. Highly recommended.

This is a very fine book, well thought through and well written. The author has looked far more deeply and clearly than any other I have read into the emotional and spiritual issues involved with excess weight and losing that weight. More than that, the wisdom presented in this book could be useful for working with any personal issue or simply for personal development. Let us hear more from this author, soon. Strongly recommended for those of us who wish to truly break the superficial approach of quick fixes and really transform our lives.

THREE GRIN SALAD
"A Recipe for a Happy and Healthy Life"
by
Aja King

Three Grin Salad is a delightful book that introduces healthy living and eating habits to young children.

Tucked within the pages between her favorite recipes of grins, gratitude, peace, love and joy, Aja tells of her daily life and how to play to be a healthy, happy kid.

Illustrator Lisa Taron has cleverly drawn images that keep the story moving and pulls the reader along.

Three Grin Salad is a lovely book written by a ten year old that will find its audience of other young children wanting to know more about how this talented young author lives.

"Three Green Salad" was written after 10 year old Aja King got the idea from a home work assignment while attending school in Shangri, China. The teacher asked the class to come up with a "potion." Aja wrote a potion for being "mad." Later she changed the idea around and decided to write recipes for happy feelings.

Aja puts grins and laughs, smiles and hurrahs in her recipes. Other recipes call for hugs, kisses, and snuggles. Aja also included a recipe for her favorite "smoothie."

Sandwiched in between her fun filled recipes are ideas on healthy living, including good sleep, good eating habits, and lot of fresh air and outside play. Clever illustrations done by Lisa Taron make the words jump off the page for fun reading.

The message of healthy living written for kids by one of their peers makes this a unique and important book. This is a book for the "kid's library," for elementary school libraries, and for the pediatrician's waiting room. A unique challenge for a happier, healthier childhood.

Dr Benson presents strong evidence for what others have called the "mind / body connection." Mainstream medical science has not yet recognized the importance belief plays in health but, Dr. Benson presents numerous studies that validate the major role belief plays in the healing process and wellness. Practitioners of complimentary therapies will find this book especially helpful in understanding how many non-drug based therapies can work. Well written and thought provoking!

Faith in God turbo-charges our indwelling healing nature
Helpful Votes: 36 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-20
I think what is amazing about this book is that Herbert Benson states without a doubt that faith in God is healthy for us. While our ancestors took it for granted that God healed them, as Dr. Benson explains, we have been taught to see healing purely in technical scientific terms. Dr. Benson explains that when we repudiated the importance of belief in healing we deprived ourselves of a powerful healing force.

Dr. Benson knows that his rational-scientific audience will be skeptical of his arguements. So, he provides us with well-reasoned arguements supported by ample evidence. He explains that we need to relax our over-stressed minds on a regular basis. We need this as an antedote to our hurried lives that stress us out and make us sick. He cites many studies (much from his own research) that daily meditation stimulates the bodies natural healing mechanisms.

Now, the radical finding of Dr. Benson's research is that belief in God makes a difference in healing. If a person meditates regularly using a spiritual phrase they are more likely to heal than those who use a secular word such as "peace". The person's religion doesn't matter. It seems that God is an equal opportunity healer.

Excellent!

Review Date: 2003-10-07
Through many of the medical observations made by the authors, this book provides some interesting ideas about the connection between the mind and body. Even though we all know that stress (which comes from our minds) influences our health, many of us find it difficult to put the mind and body together in one equation. This book is a great attempt to begin making the bridge between the subjective and objective world. It is full of insightful ideas and inspiring anecdotes. Just excellent overall. If you'd like to read about a sound theoretical framework that explains many of these things, I strongly suggest "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. When I read Sato's book, everything clicked so much is was unbelievable!

This is a well-written book that clearly describes the links between our thoughts and our physical health. It is written in an accessible personal style, without the "guru" overtones of works by Deepak Chopra or Wayne Dyer (good writers, just with a different style). Everyone, regardless of their view of God, can benfit from the concepts of Remembered Wellness and the Relaxation Response described in this book. A personal recomendation - couple this book, with its "unproven healing energy", with Greg Bradden's "The Divine Matrix", which describes this energy, and you will be good to go.

This book is an update to the series of books Sear's has written since 1993. It has new information for long-time Zone followers like me, but it was written for a newcomer. It must have been tough to write a book that contains years of developments, yet is simple enough for a novice to comprehend. Sear's did this by putting complex explanations in appendices. The text itself is about 150 pages, with the other half of the book containing the appendices and recipes.

The book puts forth the most convincing argument on why you need to eat according the Zone diet of any of Sear's books. The cancer analogy didn't work well for me, probably because I don't know much about tumors. That aside, after reading the book, you realize that most of America is doomed to poor health. It is too easy to eat poorly, and too disciplined to stay in the Zone. Only a few will experience the Zone's benefits and swim against the tide of cheap, fast food.

If you are new to the Zone, read this book and do the diet for a month. Q: What do you have to lose if you don't? A: Your quality of life, and worse.

Dr. Sears spent two years researching Toxic Fat. This new book may be a bit controversial, but it may also be groundbreaking as the general public begins to read about why our country's citizens have physically changed during the last 25 years.

Dr. Sears mapped out Toxic Fat in 13 chapters covering: the obesity epidemic, nutrition, inflammation, good and toxic fat, toxic fat syndrome, his Zone plan, fish oil benefits, anti-inflammatory meals and recipes.

The Toxic Fat Syndrome--What is it?

Dr. Sears writes that the condition occurs when obesity is viewed as inflammation-induced and is either benign or malignant. As malignant, the fat acts like a tumor, it quickly spreads to every organ in the body. The process begins with excess body fat, spreading through the blood, resulting with chronic disease--Alzheimer's, allergies, asthma, Type-2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease. Signs of the silent inflammation are high triglycerides, low HDL, and high insulin.

Toxic Fat also includes several appendixes which should NOT be skipped over, but read thoroughly as they provide explanations from a doctor-researcher's understanding, made comprehensible to the general public.

* Blood Testing For Silent Inflammation--an important section about what you need to do for yourself.
* Hormones--"While some hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone, and growth hormone, do decrease with age, others--such as insulin and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids--increase with age....Ultimately by controlling both insulin and eicosanoids, you will achieve the fountain of youth (improved wellness) by reversing Toxic Fat Syndrome."
* Fish Oil--Covers usage, history of fish oil, problems with eating contaminated fish.
* Insulin Resistance--author explains that the problem begins in adipose tissue.
* Nutrigenomics--the diet affects the genes, mentions reservatrol (a wellness buzzword), fruits and vegetables as a necessity, aspirin usage.
* Zone Food Blocks--this idea is revisited from prior published books.

Key Points of Toxic Fat:

* Being overweight or obese is not necessarily your fault, but rather is a reflection of "adverse interaction of your genes with radical changes that have taken place in the American diet over the past 25 years."
* "Everything you have heard about the `cause' and the `cure' for the current obesity epidemic is probably dead wrong."
* Obesity is a form of cancer driven by inflammation.
* Some extra body fat can be good.
* Lean doesn't always mean a person is healthy.
* Eating less and exercising more may not work.
* Toxic Fat Syndrome is caused by diet.
* Results from a changed diet will occur within 30 days.
* Diet must include low fat protein, low glycemic carbohydrates, and high dose fish oil.
* Super fish oil contains GLA and will slow the rate of aging.

Another buzzword in the weight loss and wellness community is fish oil. Dr. Sears, a researcher in the dietary control of inflammation, has included an entire chapter and an Appendix devoted to the subject in Toxic Fat.

Toxic Fat's recipes are simple to prepare and utilize common ingredients--lean meats, low-fat dairy, beans, spices, herbs, vegetables, fruits. Each recipe is divided into a man's or woman's portion requirement. Examples:

* Crab Bisque--uses skim or 1% milk
* Taco Burger--bun free, prepared with 90% fat-free ground beef
* Apple and Cheese Melt--uses low-fat mozzarella

Key to this book, is the Bibliography, where Dr. Sears notes his numerous pages of research.

Toxic Fat is written from a doctor's medical viewpoint, so that the typical reader can understand what the new research means, how it can be applied, and how weight can be lost. A controversial book, Dr. Sears writes that our obesity epidemic's roots were planted back in the 1980s when refined carbohydrates (pop/soda, candy, processed foods), and some oils (soy, corn) became cheap. This paired with our dramatic decrease in the consumption of fish oil created what he calls the Perfect Nutritional Storm. Toxic Fat builds upon Dr. Sears's past books--The Zone, Omega Rx Zone. Not just a do this and lose weight book, Toxic Fat follows the modern scope of wellness for the whole body--which includes weight loss as prevention of further disease. Toxic Fat puts real-time information in the hands of its readers and sets them on the road to recovery and wellness.

A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Barry Sears is the author of several health books, selling more than 5 million copies. He continues his research into the dietary control of inflammation at his non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation.

Current health crisis is not primarily obesity, but TOXIC FAT!!

Here it's the most revolutionary book from Dr Barry Sears in 10 years.
Obesity can be explained perfectly as a kind of cancer
Are you overweight? You can be healthy if you dont have toxic fat in your bloodstream. You simply have a benign tumor.
Are you perfectly slim? You can even be an olympic athlete and have toxic fat.
America health crisis is not due to obesity, but due to silent inflammation which is explained by Toxic Fat in blood, free for attacking your organs.

Here there is a new medical approach for understanding and cure:
- Obesity
- Heart Disease
- Cancer
- Alzheimer, parkison and mental disease
...
and why an anti-inflammatory diet like Zone plus high dose fish oil can revert this.
Everyone who concerns about obesity, health, diseases..must read this book. Every library should have this book.. Its the most enlightening book about obesity/health I have read probably in my life.

Toxicity in Fat

Toxic fat can kill. Sick fat cells have increased amounts of AA in the cellular structures. In addition, the phenomenom leads to increased insulin levels, decreased LDL and increased triglycerides. Toxic fats can promote tumor growth and other carcinogenic events. Symptoms of fatigue are cravings for carbs and stress .

The EPA ratio is an important marker for inflammation in the body. The ideal ratio is 1.5 and a 15.0 is dangerous. The EPA ratio is AA/ EPA and this is a pointer for inflammation potential in cellular structures. Controlling silent inflammation will promote a longer life.

Protein helps the liver stabilize glucose. Omega 3 fish oil is a safety net for silent inflammation. Generally, the body will require 1 month to reverse toxic fat syndrome.

Samples of model dietary veggies are artichokes, pepper, broccoli, eggplant, kale, mushroom, spinach and zucchini. Overall, the acquisition is perfect for the health and wellness section of the personal library.

Dr Sears breaks new ground with his coverage of what are, essentially, the same recommendations he's made from the start.

I got my copy of TFS a few days ago and was able to make my way through it in a single (long) night. It is a quick read, especially if you are familiar with the concepts from his previous books and don't have to re-read some of the more dense material.

I thought the book was excellent! It was certainly focused and you could tell that Dr. Sears went to a lot of effort to make the book digestible for new comers. He saved much of the science for the appendix section and even that was slightly watered down when compared to some of his other books.

In the past I have been very critical of folks that suffer from all the modern day afflictions caused by the food they eat yet, apparently, make no effort to change their habits. This book is extremely enlightening in that sense.

My only complaints, if there are any to be made, is that I felt like the book may have been a little too focused on the idea of 'toxic fat' and there were too many pages dedicated to recipes. Obviously this was a conscious decision by Dr Sears and when all of his books are viewed as a whole this complaint is pretty bogus.

The core message remains basically the same since 'Enter The Zone'. Each successive book is a slight evolution of his original dietary/lifestyle recommendations to make them either more effective or palpable to the general public. Each book supports those recommendations from slightly different angles and serves to deepen the argument for them.

What Dr Sears has built over the years is a pool of literature that justifies and explains a method to dramatically improve the health and well being of individuals and seems to be the only way out of what is increasingly being acknowledged as a worldwide inflammation epidemic.

Dr Sears simply does not get enough credit for what he has done. I would highly encourage anyone remotely interested in their health and well being to read his latest work and then head straight to the book store to pick up all of his other books. You will not regret it.

We have seen diet fads come and go, but this book helped us adjust our eating habits, not our lifestyle. The recipes are easy to follow, and the changes made to the original recipes to exclude trans fats were not noticeble in taste, nor did the taste make you ask the question "is this Diet"?

This book should be in everyone's kitchen.

I was fortunate enough to hear the author speak at a book signing. She speaks as well as she writes. I like her practical approach on nutrition. The fact she's a mother raising children adds value because I feel like she relates to me. I found her book easy to understand, easy to read, and easy to follow. She's made shopping easier with her varied lists of foods we can eat, including name brands. Changing eating habits is very difficult, yet after seeing her and reading her book, making changes seems obtainable. In fact, our family was able to make instant changes in our food buying/eating habits. Her book is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to make informative and positive changes in their nutrition.

From casual newspaper and magazine reading, I was aware Trans Fat were bad for you, but it was eye opening to realize how bad. Severson writes in a very calm, factual way. Also, there is just enough detail (versus deadly dull level of detail!). It is a very quick read, and I would recommend it for all harried moms and dads as we make alot of choices while pounding the aisles at the market, and I know I have changed my shopping choices based on the information I learned in this book.

This is the most well written and researched book that I've found on the subject of Trans Fat. Severson's tone is non-alarmist and spiced with humor. She presents scientific facts and research in an understandable and immediately practical fashion. This doesn't have all "the sky is falling! the sky is falling" rhetoric of Fast Food Nation, and for that reason alone is utterly believable--and sobering.

I love this book!

This book is presented in an easy-to-read format and is full of great information and fabulous recipes. I finally understand what trans fat is and why it is so bad for you. The recipe for Chicken-Tarragon Potpies is so delicious and easy to make it is going straight into my Family Favorites file. This book should be on everyone's cookbook shelf.

I am well-versed on the chemistry here and the book is right on target there. A nice explaination for the intelligent lay-person. What was useful to me was the exposure of all the places this stuff can be found. A few surprises there. Thanks! The last factor is the cookbook. Can't say I have tested that part, but it is great to have yummy stuff that is more healthy. Short and easy to read.

Trans fat takes the reader deep into the food asles of your groccery store- Buyer beware! If you step into any of the asles with food in boxes or wrapedup- your in for a really eye opener!
I learned a lot of ways to cook my food diffrently after reading this book and how to shop for food. This book has brought awarness to the number one killer in our fast food world. Some of the more common foods have trans fatty particles just waiting to enter your blood stream. Highly recommend.
