Dampness and phlegm are among the most vexing elements in treating patients with Chinese Medicine. This book is the best I have seen in discussing the physiological function of jin and ye fluids, pathogenic damp and phlegm and the organ systems that deal with them.

Very good book for review of acid-base and electrolyte physiology.

As a nephrologist and educator, I can say that this is the absolute best book available for learning and teaching fluid, electrolytes, and acid base. Takes a pathophysiologic approach throughout that facilitates true understanding of the subject. Drs. Haperin and Goldstein are the ultimate clinical educators in this area.

An excellent guideline to clinical acid-base physiology

Using patient-based problem solving, this text makes even the most difficult points of acid-base physiology clear. The writing style is breezy and entertaining and the layout allows you to pop in and out of various sections without the need to start from scratch. I have used the text for teaching medical students, residents and physician assistants. There is something in here for everyone. The authors' philosophy is obviously that acid-base problems are giant jig-saw puzzles and that you might as well have fun while working them.

The best text on integrative physiology out there

This is probably one of the best textbooks on integrative physiology involving electrolytes on the market. Dr. Halperin is a phenomenal instructor and his prose makes learning interactive and interesting. Electrolytes are key to clinical medicine and surprisingly not very well understood by the medical masses. This textbook is full of examples, questions, and pearls.

The abundance of questions with thorough explanations is the strength of this book. An understanding of electolytes including urine electrolytes will be gained from the study of this text.

The target audience is really the physician with an already good grounding in acid-base disorders. It will allow one to build on past knowledge and to solidy any foundation that has already been established. I am really and truly impressed with this book and I refer to it often.

Where was this book when I was in undergraduate school? Now that I am teaching nursing I have found it very useful in that it has given me a rare opportunity to present a very complex and hard to understand block of material is a manner much easier for students to understand. It is packed with easy to understand pictures, diagrams, and graphs that help teach the concept in a way that is "reader friendly". The illustrations are unbelievable and a great tool used by the author to present the ideas to the reader. I have even had requests from the Occupational Therapy faculty at our college to use the book for their lectures as well.. Great Job ! I would highly recommend it to anyone, whether a staff nurse or a faculty member at a university or college...

This is well documented and extremely well written, very fluid. I'm a veg so I would have wanted a meatless book, so I have to skip over the blood & bones parts to get to info I can use. I see a lot of meaters with the endless broken hips and bones so I can easily do without the traditional way down that rat hole. I have a few other books of hers which are more oriented in my direction and am hoping her next book on bone health coming in Feb is more on my wavelength.

I feel very fortunate to have found this very enlightening book about the very serious ailment facing, mostly, the women of our society: OSTEOPOROSIS. Relying on her own family's years of natural bone health, she gives the reader many facts and field results on the "Nutritional Aspect" of treating, and improving our bones throughout our lifetime. Her 60+ recipes are original and sometimes very unique, giving a very encourageing start to, hopefully, a new awareness and lifestyle. I have greatly enjoyed reading, learning, and following her many examples and suggestions, and fixing her recipes...I know I feel better already. Please read this book, you owe it to yourself, and the ones you love!

I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation. I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too. So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.

With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart. I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do. And the recipes look great. I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.

I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".

I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss. Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines. Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensate as efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35

She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't). This information is fascinating.

I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression. I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today. I guess that includes us all. Great job Annemarie!

A must read for those who care about their health

As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the things we put into our bodies every day. The approach she proposes is unconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it. Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy products are freely consumed by the majority. Give this book a read and you won't be sorry!

This book well deserves the Bestseller slot it holds in the UK but despite it's claims to be suitable for vegetarians I'd advise looking over Mr Marber's shoulder.

They say behind every great man there's a great woman.....check out Yvonne Bishop-Weston BSc Dip ION MBANT at The Food Doctor.

If you have leanings towards vegetarianism then try her recipe book by Hamlyn (Vegan) ISBN 0600609154 - fantastic healthy recipes. It's based on the same kind of higher protein, lower or rather better carb, lower GI / GL (glycaemic load) type principles that have made Ian Marber so famous recently whilst battling out on British TV with other nutri-celebs.

It's also on special offer at Amazon! Enjoy

This is an excellent work on the classic problems faced by people of all ages-at some stage of life. Namely; the collective
impact of parasites, yeasts and sugar can be very damaging to
the gastrointestinal tract and the inflammatory processes in
the body. The author provides a menu of fruits, veggies and
herbs to help deflect many of the most painful problems
of the gastrointestinal tract. The book is well worth the price

I love this book. It is a v. common sense approach and fits in with normal day to day living. Over the last three years I've been slowly cutting sugar, refined carbs and saturated fats out of my diet and going back to basic wholefoods. BUT, it's sometimes very hard not to reach for that slice of bread or a biscuit. And it's sometimes very hard to find inspiration from basic foods like eggs, yogurt, salads, meat and vegetables, potatoes and rice. This diet is what I've been trying to do, but just couldn't quite get the inspiration or the know-how. It takes all those basic ingredients and adds a lot more interesting ones and puts them all together so that the diet is no longer boring.

I've tried Atkins, and also mostly raw food diets. But they get a bit tedious after a while because they're not varied enough. This diet is based on common sense and eating sensibly. I started with the 7 day diet and really enjoyed the recipes (all very easy to make). My clothes were loose by the end of the week and it wasn't even hard to do! Now I follow the recommendations of how to eat healthy, and it's great. I always have something good in the fridge to snack on. The diet part is also a bit like a 7-day simple cooking course in that it shows you how to use herbs and spices to liven up your meals. The recipes at the back are very easy, but v. good and interesting. It has really expanded my repertoire of things that I now reach for every day. I've just bought the book for my sister, as she has some food intolerances, so she's going to give it a try too.

...then it would be this man. This is a highly sensible and helpful text that aims to address a lot of the dietry and digestive problems that have become a common part of modern day life. Don't assume it is about loosing weight, the word "diet", seems to have come to mean that and yet it so much more of an embracing word. This is just a good book about the most sensible kind of medicine, food and good food at that.
It should be in every home and in every Doctor's consulting room right next to their prescription book!

I'm going to make some significant changes to my diet! I was quite surprised at the ratings on some of the food that I've been eating! This is an excellant book. It grades the nutritional value of the food you're eating and provides guidelines, based on what kind of diet you are trying to maintain on how much of a particular food, based on its grade, you should eat. It takes into consideration cholesterol, fats, salt fiber, vitamins and other factors that can effect your health.

The Food Report Card

Review Date: 2001-02-01
Deciphering labels can turn food shopping into a real hassle for many of us. Thomas Yannios, M.D. makes it easier to decide which products to purchase in The Food Report Card. Dr. Yannios has analyzed the labels of thousands of foods, and compiled his results in a simple grade of A, B, C, or D.

"You can make an enormous impact on your long-term health, and even on your appearance," Dr. Yannios writes, "if you do nothing else during your normal food shopping but select the A- and B-rated foods, and leave the C's and D's on the shelves back at the store."

Dr. Yannios believes that atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is the number one health problem for many Americans. He says that "food significantly impacts" atherosclerosis, and that we can reduce the negative impact by carefully choosing what we eat. "People are confused," Dr. Yannios says, explaining that he wrote The Food Report Card to help eliminate confusion and enable people to choose foods that are good for them.

He has grouped foods into categories, such as beverages, cereals and grains, milk and dairy products, and meats. Each food within a category is then listed in alphabetical order, such as chocolate milk and vegetable juice in the beverage section. Foods are then evaluated by brand name. For example, five brands of vegetable juice are analyzed and graded. He maintains that pattern for each food category, analyzing 12,000 foods altogether. All you have to do is look up a specific food to quickly determine whether it is an "A" food that you want to consume or a "D" food you want to avoid.

People who want to choose the healthiest processed foods, but don't want to spend a lot of time calculating nutritional values from confusing labels, will find The Food Report Card informative and helpful.

Organic Germanium is the one supplement that my family members with cancer take and this book explains why and how it works in somewhat layman terms. I have bought many copies to send out to friends who have been diagnosed with cancer or who just want to learn more about what dis-ease in the body can do to our health and how organic germanium may help mitigate the effects of the dis-ease.

I find it incredible that this book has been in print for over 10 years and people have been having success with germanium as an alternative/preventative to prescribed medicines (search the internet if you doubt my claims) yet no one else has found it worth writing about. Hmmmm...That must be because Kamen's book does the best job at explaining this compound and how it works in our bodies and why it is such an important supplement in these toxic times. [...]

More than 10 years ago my mother-in-law sought an alternative treatment called chelation. Its purpose was to use derivatives of metals to clear her arteries of the plaque that had built up in them. Now, I find another use for chelated germanium. It combats viruses, is used in the treatment of AIDS patients, can prevent some cancers as well as diminish the ravages of late-stage cancer. Originally researched/developed in Japan, Kamen gives credence to that early researcher's claims. Since it is the only book available and if you're seeking nutritional supplements to battle one of the above problems, it is worth buying.

The book is a wonderful summary of international studies on this plant-based supplement. It is a must read for those suffering from MS, CFS, Lyme disease, and other chronic illnesses - including cancer! We must applaud this author for compiling unbiased material on a supplement that has received unfounded criticism. Another good recommendation would be by Dr. David Jernigan, D.C. I have read many 'diet' books but this is my favorite!

It does NOT have filler pages with recipes...it's 146 pages are
packed full of encouraging and helpful information.

I learned from reading Jennifer Klein's book, "Getting There and Staying There" that all over-weight people have 'Defective Hunger Meters!'.....They work to tell us when we are hungry before meals BUT they become defective when it comes to telling us to STOP when we are NO LONGER HUNGRY....A trim person can go to a wedding and eat one plate of food and a piece of cake and be satisfied...But us, (me) actually would like another piece or two of cake (me..preferably a corner piece!)...I like the way the cake and rich sweet frosting tastes in my mouth....being 'Tummy Hungry' has nothing to do with it."

Although we can't fix this meter to make it work automatically; we CAN and WILL control it manually

Jennifer said: "Weight loss is not a punishment. It is a wonderful and exciting experience that will lead you to a new life."

FROM ME:
Let's go for it! And not settle for anything less than total victory. (Reaching our ideal or dream weights.) It is not a race, it is just fine and better really to get there slowly, we just need to get there.

what a great book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I flew right through it. I had lost 155 pounds following a different plan and watched as some of my hard lost pounds crept back on. I had changed my lifestyle and lost the weight slowly so I began to get really frustrated with myself over losing my weight but not my obsession with food. Reading Jennifer's book made me realize that I have been doing things right by thinking long term and making the healthiest choices possible. I changed the outside but the inside may never change. I may never lose my obsession with food. I just have to learn to be at peace with myself about not always being perfect. There is no time limit on becoming healthier. She also gave plenty of helpful tips.

I laughed at some of the things I read in Jennifer's book. I kept thinking - has she been following me?

This book is well worth the read. You wont be dissappointed.

I first went to see Jennifer in 1997 when I was only 12 years old. I was desperate; my weight had ballooned to almost 300 lbs (that's right, 300lbs as a seventh grader). I'll admit, although the program made perfect sense to me, I didn't have the maturity level as a twelve year old to implement Jen's teachings into my life, and I failed again and again. Jen was incredibly patient with me; I think she saw in me the power to change myself that I didn't know I had.

During the summer of 1999, I had finally had enough; summer clothes just didn't work. Not only were they tight, but I looked awful. I was interested in girls, but they weren't interested in me. And worst of all, I knew my health would be in serious jeopardy if I didn't do something. So I started really paying attention to Jen when we met for our weekly sessions, and as I began changing my lifestyle, my eating habits, my exercise habits, the weight came off.

I'm now 17 and I stand 6 feet tall and weigh 220lbs. I have achieved a level of confidence now that would only have been a pleasant dream two years ago. I'm happy with the way I look and my cholestorol and blood pressure have gone down, which are really the best effects of my weight loss.

I'll be honest with you; losing weight is possibly the toughest thing you will ever do in your life. But Jennifer has a program that actually works (!!!) and that you can live with for the rest of your life. I strongly urge you to read this book; if you're serious about a life change, and not just going on a diet (which don't work by the way, I've been on enough to tell you this, you need to change your entire way of eating and exercising) then this is definitely the book for you.

Me Too! That is what I kept thinking as I read.

I'll be the first to admit, I was a bit intimidated to start reading another weight loss/health related book. I figured I'd be told once again I have to eat only tasteless foods worth "2 points." I'm one of those people looking for the effortless weight loss plan of eating nothing but chocolate chip cookies.

Just a few paragraphs into Getting There Staying There, I was thinking "me too." This book made me realize I'm not the only person that dreads dieting, thinking the day is ruined if I start it off with something unhealthy like a fattening muffin. Jennifer's book has taught me to understand that I can recover from any "muffin" mishaps.

I was so surprised at how much I could relate to in this book, it almost made me laugh aloud at times. More importantly, it has motivated me to start taking the first steps (once again) towards a healthy lifestyle. Only, this time I'm confident my steps will continue to move forward.

I am trying to figure out how to tell my family and friends to read it without offending them. Hopefully, with a little time they will see improvements in me, and ask about how I got 'healthier' so I can tell them I learned from reading Getting There Staying There. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Just as the previous reviews claim, this book is great. As Pressman does so well in all of his books, the information is explained clearly - for all readerships. Antioxidants in general and Glutathione in particular are our bodies' buffers to the deteriorating effects of "life". Taken as blends or individually, our bodies need them. iHerb is a site where I have found Glutathione as well as other antioxidants. My doctor recommended I add them to my daily regeime. You can find additional documentation to support Pressman's book at iHerb as well as your choice of products.

A little gem of a book

What a lovely little gem of a book! The title is almost misleading, because it by no means confines itself to a discussion of Glutathione. Rather, it's a comprehensive review of many different healthcare issues, complete with excellent nutritional and supplement recommendations. Medical conditions and biological information are explained in very clear language, and the book is blessedly free of exclamation points, those banes of the diet and health book industry.

I would recommend this book as an excellent all-around reference on the subject of nutritional healing.

This is definitely a good read if you are interested in treating yourself or someone you care about using Glutathione. It goes into a lot of detail about how it works, and I found it to be worthwhile. It talks about some other aminos that are helpful to use in conjunction with the Glutathione.

Just happened to find this title in the library. Since reading it, both my wife and I have started taking NAC-Glutathione with excellent results.

A very good explanation of why your body needs vitamins and amino acids to combat free radicals.

A life altering revelation.

Most of us do not know what Genetically Modified Organisms are, let alone that they have been added to our diet, with potentially deadly results. As major food corporations have attempted to play God with our food supply, all in the name of more profits, they have made consumers their guinea pigs. Learn how these GMO's have not been thoroughly tested for long term affects on humans, yet have been allowed to be added to the U.S. food supply, though numerous countries worldwide have banned the same GMO's. There are also stories of scientists that have attempted to raise alerts regarding these GMO's and have been threatened for their efforts. All food is not created equal, and you need to learn why. Read this book.

This is one of the best topics covered today by Mr. Smith and very in depth as well. He tells us who is and how we are being deceived through the genetic engineering of our main food supplies. He has very astutely pointed out the problem how to deal with it and what political means we can take to stand up for our rights to not be poisoned.

Must read for anybody who eats or has kids that do. If this guy is only 10% right, we are screwed. I've bought more packs and passed them out.
