My name is Mark Monaco, and I agree with everything Matthew said. I was an 36 at home contestant along with Matthew. I represented Montana. Prior to The Biggest Loser, I tried almost EVERTHING!! This book IS The Biggest Loser. It is exactly what Dr.H taught us. There are no gimmicks here, just common sense, hard work, and consistency. Add up four or five of those 16 oz. Lattes and you have the cost of the book. What do you have to lose ;0)

This book is written as if Dr. Huizenga is speaking directly to you with straight forward language that's easy to read and follow. He has broken down all the misinformation from various "experts" in the weight-loss field and offers a logical and proven formula for losing fat and improving your life.

I've been curious about the incredible amounts of weight loss on the TV program Biggest Loser. This well written and informative book gives insight into how they do it. Better yet, how you can accomplish the same results at home. Dr. Huizenga writes in a simple, but not condescending fashion and explains it all. I highly recommend it!

This book is great. The author is the doctor on the Biggest Loser.

He is a former athlete himself and worked as the doctor to sports teams. He observed the athletes having problems keeping weight on, no matter what they ate, due to the amount of exercise.

He is the originator of the Biggest Loser plan you see on TV. He was asked to formulate a plan for weight loss. At the time, it was not thought possible to lose as much weight as they do on the show.

His theory is to exercise 1 hour 2 times per day and eat about 1,800 calories. Do not restrict carbs too much or you will lose valuable muscle tissue.

This book is the science of FAT loss. Long term fat loss success.

I love the science of it. We don't need another diet book. Diets do not work.

Read this book to know about the science, not the fad, of fat loss.

I recommend this book to everyone who needs to lose weight. If you wanted to know the secrets of the Biggest Loser show, here they are.

While I am not obese and in fact just got back into the normal weight category, I was intrigued to read the Biggest Loser story. The book is well written and useful for anyone who wants to improve their weight and overall health.

I was a bit surprised that Dr. H's maintenance program includes 9 hours of weekly exercise. I do 5 and thought I was doing enough. But overall, for the obese person to be able to see such dramatic results - exercising at home - is truly inspiring. If you need to take off a lot of weight - read this book and follow his advise. And if you can possibly do so, take a trainer as well.

As the parent of 2 children who have been at the same, albeit high, percentile on the growth curve since infancy, this book is very helpful. Now I see how I can tweak my part of the issue, and help my kids learn how to be who they naturally are, without feeling as if I am failing them.
I really appreciate this book, thank you Ellyn Satter.

Life-changing for my whole family

I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!! My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

Revolutionary, though repetitive

I love Ellyn Satter's healthy attitude toward food and eating. But I did get a bit tired of seeing the magic words "Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility" on page after page. Still, Satter's ideas are revolutionary enough that maybe she needs to repeat them frequently to get them across. Her basic idea? You are responsible for presenting your child with nutritious food at regular meal and snack times. You are not responsible for how much your child weighs, you are not responsible for how much (or how little) your child eats, and you shouldn't even try to prevent your child from ever eating "junk" food. Just as important as Satter's theory of how to feed a family is her critique of our "fat-phobic" culture. And she's not just making it up as she goes along--she cites the research to support her theories. This is an important book.

I am thankful that we found this book early enough in my daughter's childhood that we can implement the suggestions and really make a difference in her life. I have struggled with obesity my entire life, and my daughter appears to have inherited my genetic makeup. I learned from this book that many of the things my husband and I were doing WERE harming her and setting her up for full-blown obesity in the future. This book has helped us develop a more relaxed environment around eating, and we now have sit-down family meals for every meal we have at home. That is a key component of the whole philosophy, and even though we knew that was important in the same way that everyone does, we didn't make it a priority until after reading this book.

How much damage did my parents do to me by making me "clean my plate" because "there were children starving in Africa!" Urgh. After 20 years with a weight problem, I'm finally getting it under control (with the help of WW) A few months ago - I realized that dd was heading towards obesity herself - and I was helping her ! After reading this book, incorporating some of the suggestions, she lost 10 lbs over the past 3 months, without even trying. Definately urge an overweight parent to read it before putting a child on "a diet" or otherwise limiting food. So glad I did before I made the same mistakes with my other 3 children!

Lance has illustrated the importance of diabetes and how one should go about dealing with every-day situations. Wheather you are recently diagnosed or someone that has been living with this disease, it is an excellent guide book to gaining better control of your diabetes (Type 1 or 2). I am impressed with the broad range of topics covered throughout the book to help with the success of better diabetes management. If you have not read this book, go out and get a copy. I have Diabetes type II and was lucky enough to get this book, I followed the instructions to the letter, step by step and from the very first week I could tell that it was working.
I felt better physically and mentally, more alert. Slept better, my glucose level was getting better.
When I started the prgram I was taking Glucophage and Avandia, by the 18th day I no longer needed Avandia, my daily blood glucose average was 121 the highest with the 94 the lowest ( when watching my carb intake).

I got to the point that I cut the half the daily dose of Glucophage.
Commitment is the key, reading the book is not enough, you have to decide to DO as the book says.!! Getting into this program is one of the bets things that ever happened to me.

Lance Porter has put together one of the most useful "self help"

books to come down the pike in a long time. With this book

whether you are a diabetic or someone who knows a diabetic you

will find answers to a lot of questions about the disease and

plenty of ways to help gain control of it! One of the things

Lance does in this book is to remind the reader that maintaining

a postive outlook on things will go a long way to help you

get your life together after the diagnosis of diabetes has

knocked it apart. This book can also be of much help to those

who might be at risk of developing the disease too. Who knows

if you read this book and follow its precepts you might ever be

able to keep yourself from getting diabetes. This book is also

a great way for the people in your life who are trying to

understand what you are living with and going through each day

with diabetes to learn how to help you with it. This book is

a must for all diabetics and those who care about them. I know

because I am on of the many Type 2 Diabetics out there, and this

book has been a " Godsend" to me and mine. Bravo Lance Porter!!!!

ME HE SOSTENIDO Cinco meses con mi peso ideal...

With a title like, "The Baby Boomers' Guide To Living Forever," it would be easy to pass over this book with the assumption that it is a journey into some sort of medical never-never land. But as I quickly discovered, this is far from the case. "The Baby Boomers' Guide" shapes as an absolutely fascinating, at times scholarly, tour of what middle age America can do to improve both the quality and quantity of life. Dr. Grossman covers a remarkable spectrum of topics and, with support from co-authors who are experts in each of dozens of medical/health areas, provides an astonishing treasure of useful information. This is one of those rare books that can literally change the course of the reader's life. "Baby Boomers' Guide" is must reading for anyone who is serious about extending their years, perhaps beyond anything that they ever imagined was possible.

Dr. Grossman and the co-authors have put together one of the best longevity / anti-aging books around. They don't just banter on about generalities as other authors do on the subject, but provide practical and real information. This book is a good guide for one interested in the anti-aging movement, not only the patient but for doctors discovering this field of medicine.

At first blush most of the information if acted on in the book will probably result in adding years, if not decades to some peoples lives. My own recommendation is to do your own independent research [separate from this book], first, if you make any life changing adjustments, particularly if it involves consuming vitamins suggested in the book. Some of the recommendations only strengthened what I already knew, such as taking Co-Q10 on a daily basis. Co-Q10 is expensive, but a very good nutrient that can help protect your body from free radical damage, resulting in reduced risks of succumbing to various cancers and heart diseases. Other recommendations in the book did raise some concerns for me such as consuming L-Carnosine on a daily basis. Research i've found dating back to 1984 expressed that L-Carnosine built up in the body can potentially have dangerous neurotoxic side effects. Taking too much of it could induce what is medically referred to as "Carnosinemia", which also can be inherited. Most of the oral vitamin supplements in the market offer L-Carnosine at 500MG doses, recommending you take it once or twice daily. The book recommends 200MG per day in single or "divided doses" and stressed "its low level of toxicity"...... but I don't know how much is too much frankly, so I will avoid this particular molecule until more research data is known.

An Excellent Guide To The Life-Extension Revolution!

Over the years I have read several health oriented books promoting ideas for healthier and longer lives for us, this one is by far the best, containing down-to-earth advice of a practical and far reaching nature. Many areas are covered, including supplements from arginine to zinc, social issues, and lots of other topics.

This book supports the method of using biostasis (cryonics) at the time of death as a means of reaching the future era of advanced nanomedicine, much anticipated by many scientists who work in this nascent field. About fifteen pages are devoted to cryonics, a very good introduction to this subject, an idea and practice that is slowly becoming 'mainstream'. In fact, Terry Grossman, himself an M.D., is signed up for cryonics.

Overall, this volume contains much useful advice and should be read by everyone.

THE BONUS YEARS DIET: A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURE
Ralph Felder's diet book is a lifetime labor of love. Felder, a practicing physician and scientist who holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford, and is the author of a book on magnetic resonance imaging, is exceedingly qualified to address the science of health. He handles the interaction between chemistry and health, and the aesthetics of cooking and eating, with an affection that will win your heart. There is enough science here to keep you informed, yet not so much as to lose the thread of health and its by-product, happiness. There are enough recipes to open four successful restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meticulous attention given to flavor, variety, appearance, and budget (both of time and of money), make The Bonus Years a milestone in human culture.
The idea of Bonus Years is that people want to live longer, and stay healthy when they do; and that diet is the crucial component that can make that (statistically) possible. The book has an easy-to-read, open style that invites you in. Felder's information comes from controlled studies; and he includes a list of references for anyone interested in learning the chemistry and epidemiology at first-hand. The strategy is that certain medicines, aspirin, folic acid, statin, and blood-pressure medicines, which reduce the risk of heart disease and debilitating high blood pressure, can be obtained more pleasantly by eating the right foods. These are red wine, dark chocolate, fruits and vegetables, fish, garlic and nuts. These, combined with such irresistibles as sirloin steak, olive oil, honey, turkey, whole-wheat pasta, and many others, offer about as pleasant a way of staying healthy as can be imagined. If one of the core foods doesn't appeal to you, you can omit it without much penalty. The statistically demonstrable extra six years of life gives The Bonus Years Diet a scientific foundation that is unique. The recipes are inspired. Even if you don't believe in diets, you should read The Bonus Years Diet to see the place in human culture of the humane interaction between science, cooking, health, and eating. --Bill Abler

My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine. Dosing food like doctors dose pills. A great idea. Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet. The recipes are great. He is a chef and knows his stuff! My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding. I love the stuffed french toast. I own many cookbooks but this is absolutely one of my favorites. I love the healthy aspects of this book. I appreciate all of the research put into it---delicious dishes based on science, but wow do I thoroughly enjoy the recipes. Dr. Felder's Chefs hat shines through here. I love the pan-grilled salmon with frisee salad lyonnaise--excellent!! The black bean chili is delicious and the crab salad with creamy dressing is the best. Another favorite is the salmon with shanghi red sauce. What a grerat combination, a MD and Chef. No wonder this book is so good.

Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.

It Changed My Life--literally

I reached a point in my life where I was constantly ill. I had never-ending digestive problems, including loud, involuntary stomach rumbling (while in my college classes, how embarrassing), gas, sick stomach, and plenty of fatigue. I was a bit fat and depressed. Fortunately, I found this book. I won't say it cured every single thing in my life--there is no "easy cure-all." But it made such a difference.
The book has you eat a wide range of vegetables, some meat/protein, and drink only water. I ate nuts and yeast-free crackers, too. It sounds like a crazy change, and I admit I had a hard time with it. I wasn't always perfect, either. Sometimes I would get depressed because I couldn't eat all the donuts, fruit, dairy, and pasta that I loved. But what a difference in my health! That deprivation was so hard but 110% worth it. I lost weight and that was great, but I also had energy, my horrible, uncontrollable health problems went away, and I was happy again. What price can you put on just being happy and appreciating your appearance and having the energy to do what you want to do?
Also on the positive side, I discovered new vegetables that I really enjoy and a whole new way of eating. Also, I want to point out that it was hard to eat this way because I wasn't used to eating all these fresh vegetables instead of my processed, man-made foods and sugars, but the food was actually very good, colorful, varying in taste and texture, and creative. I learned what it was like to feel light and energized after dinner instead of too "full" and weighted down and tired. And I did go through the expected withdrawal period for 3-7 days at first (while my body was cleaning out yet still craving the toxins), but after that I felt better.
I won't say I was perfect after doing my cleansing eating period. I still love Chinese food, for example. But I know now how to take care of myself, and I wanted to make sure to share my experience. Anything worth having requires sacrifice, but let me tell you, this is worth it!! It's the real deal.

A yeast infection can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, digestive difficulties, food allergies, joint pain, fatigue, and depression. Candida albicans, the medical name for culprit in most yeast infections, lives in everyone. A number of factors, usually related to lifestyle and eating habits, can allow it to multiply out of control, creating serious problems for its human host.

Although a medical professional can diagnose a yeast infection, it's usually up to the individual to get his/her body back into balance. The Candida Albicans Yeast-Free Cookbook, Updated Second Edition, by nutritionist Pat Connolly, provides all the information individuals need to restore themselves to good health.

Although it says "yeast-free" in the title, that doesn't mean that the recipes are prepared without yeast. Unfortunately it's not that simple. Yeast thrive on sugar, and the recipes are designed to eliminate sugar from diets, making the individual "yeast-free."

The basis of a sugar-free diet is the "Rainbow Meal Plan," developed by a team of doctors. The Rainbow Meal Plan is very simple: each meal "includes small portions of seven food groups: complete protein; grain or legume; root vegetable; yellow or white vegetable; green vegetable; red, orange, or purple vegetable; and leafy green vegetable." The portions are all the same size. Individuals may eat as many meals a day as they like, but each meal must contain equal-sized portions of each of the seven food groups.

Connolly provides some sample menus to help people get started on the plan. He has also provided a selection of recipes for a "Modified Food Plan" for those who are unable to use the Rainbow Plan. Most of the recipes are very simple and use easy-to-find ingredients.

He also includes tips on eating out, good nutrition, hidden sugars, and foods to avoid under all circumstances.

A comprehensive questionnaire at the beginning of the book will help those who suspect they may have a yeast overgrowth.

The Candida Albicans Yeast-Free Cookbook offers hope and practical help to all those suffering from yeast infections.

I've had this book for 20 years and while I no longer have Candida and haven't for years, I still use the recipes in this book because they are simple, tasty and healthy.

Excellent recipes and large selection of each type.

The recipes are great. The one for the home made mayonaise is fantastic. It is as good or better than the store bought. Each recipe I have used has been a delight. Even my husband is enjoying the food I have been presenting.

This book is uncomplicated, straight-forward and doesn't sway from it's belief system through contradictions.

The receipes are created with regular foods found in your grocery store and carbs are counted per serving for each receipe. Not a low/no carbohydrate concept, but more of a balanced body chemistry alternative... such as fruit can unbalance your bodies chemistry, and should only be consumed as an occasional treat. Takes the cave-man diet to a new, healthful, fresh and appetizing level while eliminating mold, sugar, additives and suggesting the moderate use of certain food that can upset the natural body chemistry.

Overall, it's a great feel-good type of book. Just like my new beverage of choice called s o y f e e. It's made from soybeans that you brew just like coffee. Caffeine-free, you'll find it at www. S oycoffee.com.

An excellent book to have on hand for reference as well as quick healthful receipes.

This book really hit home with me. I am now on the way to a new body after discovering I am a extreme carb addict. I think Amazon is a great web site for finding most anything.

Thanks,

Low carb eating plans are not for everyone, but if you have had difficulty with other diets, including constant hunger and the feeling of deprivation or, falling off the no carb wagon too many times, then the advice in this book is worth every minute of your time.
If you want to stay on the low carb diet plan, it's important that you understand how it works with your body, what products are available to help you stay on course, & what to do when you hit a roadblock.
The authors have made low carb a lifestyle for themselves, their advice reflects their experiences.

As a fan of the Hellers' work, and just then experiencing a plateau in my weight loss progression, I was delighted to see this title. I found the ideas in it practical and workable, and they worked! My weight plateau is turning into a downslope again.

Although I like their recipes very much, I have one and a half caveats for these recipes as well as for those in their *No Cravings* cookbook: The recipes' prep times do not include time for the necessary dicing onions, mincing garlic, shredding cabbage, marinating, etc. but rather only the time needed once all that is done. Occasionally there are typos in the recipes also, but easy enough to figure out what the authors meant. I want to emphasize again that their recipes are just wonderfully tasty and filling, and that their system works for me.

Not impressed!!!!!!!!

Unless you are acquainted the Hellers previous books this one proves to be confusing. I find this book to be a waste of paper. I have read the majority of the Heller's books in the Carbohydrate Addict series and this is by far a waste of my reading time. The book needs more substance like that of The Carbohydrate Life Span. I hate it when diet book authors resort to crappy recipes and large print to cover the fact that they have nothing pertinent to say on the subject. I purchased this book with the anticipation that The 7-Day Low-Carb Recovery would offer more insight into the art of low carbing. Look away!! look away!!

Chocolate can improve your Health!

It sounds like an oxymoron to most people when you say "Healthy Chocolate". But everything in this book is true, the antioxidants in good chocolate do wonders. Cocoa is a natural anti-inflammatory, and since over 200 diseases start with inflammation and oxidation of the cells, chocolate can help with so many things. I have seen it first hand with so many people I know, who used to have fibro, allergies, diabetes, athritis...amazing. It truly is the "food of the Gods". Don't go eat the candy kind, though, it HAS to be cold-processed chocolate. See [...] for details. I also recommend Dr. Steve Warren's book on this topic, the Healthy Chocolate Desk Reference, he has truly amazing detail in his research!

Congratulations to the author on an excellently researched, very readable book about Chocolate. The title alone is clever and the subtitle reassuring.
Not only is it wonderfully organized on the Contents page, it is a very enjoyable read. While I could not be described as a "chocoholic" I know many and I totally enjoy ingesting good chocolate from the bar variety to the many delicious ways of including it in our diet.
The recipes included in the text are different from the usual variety and add to the pleasure of the text. It will make an excellent gift as well as owning one personally.
