i grew up in the 70's and 80's and was fed with hotdogs and other processed foods. as a result, i grew up hating vegetables. what color is your diet convinced me that eating vegetables is really good for the health. it opened my eyes to the many benefits of eating colorful meals each day. now, as i look at my meals, i become conscious if what i am eating is healty or not. unlike before when i just chomped on all my favorite foods which were all beige and unhealthy.

The Best Weight-Loss Plan

Review Date: 2004-03-19
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Almost a year ago, my husband decided he needed to lose weight (his doctor had been telling him to do so for years; he was verging into diabetes despite being on Glucophage, Glucotrol, and Lipitor). My husband's one criterion was he wanted a diet that allowed him to eat frequently during the day because he didn't want to be hungry. Enter Heber's book!

Merely by increasing the number of vegetables and fruits that my husband ate, he crowded out the crap he'd been obliviously living on. He began to count calories because the results from merely eating more healthily a la Heber made him feel very positive. In six months, he lost sixty-five pounds. His cholesterol went from 220 (a number achieved with the help of those meds) to 125. He's kept the weight off five months now, but we are determined that he will be eating this way for life. We have a word in our household: Heberific. My husband's Park Avenue doctor phoned me and said: "I didn't recognize your husband from his numbers [meaning his blood test numbers]. They've never looked like this! You've added at least ten years to your husband's life, and really fifteen quality years. You are a hero!" I accepted the compliment because it's I who do most of the food preparation.

Now I go to the fruits-and-vegetable market almost every day. I too have made a game of tracking what color fruits and vegies my husband is eating (I composed a daily chart; I've noticed another reader said he did the same thing). I keep meaning to write Dr. Heber a thank-you letter but then I thought perhaps I should simply post my praise on Amazon.

I know Dr. Heber formulated this way of eating primarily to safeguard people from the major chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer) that are diet related, but this way of eating is fun and has had extraordinary results in my family. I've given this book to my parents (who are not overweight) and recommend it incessantly. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that five stars for this book isn't enough.

Everyone is talking about how we should eat more fruits and vegetables, because it is better for our health. This book explains what and why in easy to understand language. I am getting copies for family and friends, because we were so pleased with it. I have read other books on the subject, but I feel that this one is an easy referance as well as accurate information.

The advice provided by Sass demonstrates she has years of experience working with food issues helping clients overcome them. Her expertise is useful for practitioners and for the layperson whose partner has wacky food issues. I highly recommend this book.

For anyone who has ever argued about chips v. crudite with their husband, this is the book for you. Very insightful and realistic look at how we eat and how it affects those around us, including how someone ELSE eats effects our own eating habits (anyone remember dating that guy and gaining 10 lbs. on his diet of beer and wings?). Fun little vignettes and quizzes keep the book flowing. A must read for anyone struggling with their partners' eating habits.

McDougall changes lives

Review Date: 2008-09-25
I was amazed that the professional reviewers of this book had such a "bah-humbug" attitude about them! The program is hardly "draconian" as one reviewer put it -- you eat all you want of healthy, good tasting, real food. My mother discovered McDougall ages ago, before any of these glossier books came out -- and at 83, she still takes no medications and at her last check-up, the nurse commented that her "heart was like a teenager's!" The hardest part of staying on McDougall is that you have a whole culture working against it -- all those high-fat foods or this strange culture of the "high protein" diet. People think you're some kind of "weirdo." But the usual American diet isn't weird, right? We can buy meals in minutes with 1200+ calories and 69 fat grams and never even have to leave our cars! Read the reviews by the people who have actually tried McDougall -- they loved it. Even people who are enticed away from this way of eating area always wanting to go back to it. It does take some dedication at the start -- one is breaking some very old habits. But it's worth a try. McDougall has decades worth of healthy patients to reinforce what he's been developing since his earliest days as an MD. He's still a practicing doctor, still a researcher, and continues to grow and learn about nutrition, health and the vegan diet. Atkins died overweight and very sick. John and Mary McDougall are still healthy and robust -- and so are the people who actually follow his nutritional advice. Does that say something? Within the past couple of years, my brother-in-law, inspired by my mother's experiences on McDougall, tried it out. He was widowed, had had a heart-attack, and was looking for a better way to eat and be healthy. A couple years later, he's healthier than he's ever been in his life and wishes he hadn't waited so long. Of course, McDougall's real secret weapon is his wife, Mary McDougall. She's the true reason that John McDougall can convince people that they can still 'eat well" on a vegan diet. She's a nutritionist by training, and after so many decades, is no doubt one of the foremost vegan chefs around, always coming up with new recipes for both old and new favorites. I applaud them both for helping so many people discover a health and way of life they never knew they could. I recommend an earlier book, "The McDougall Program: 12 Days to Dynamic Health" as a better "starter" book than his later cookbooks. Give the McDougall program a try. You'll be amazed how fast you start feeling better, even if you felt pretty good before!

I think all of Dr. McDougall's books are very very good. The cookbooks are really a big help to me as I learn how to cook this new way. The China Study got my husband and I started in this direction and we are very happy it did! We do feel a lot better already but expect to feel even better after a few more months (we are in our first month). This is a cookbook that I plan on using for a long time. I also like the Almost No Fat Cookbook by Grogan (it uses no animal fat).

McDougall rocks! I think Dr. McDougall has the answers to our health problems and reading all of his books, even the ones that are out of print or hard to find is so worth the effort. If you want to see your blood pressure go down, your cholesterol drop and your aches and pains go away - you've got nothing to lose by giving his program a try. You quickly become accustomed to a change in your diet. If you want to stay away from the doctor, get rid of your prescriptions and chuckle at the commericals for medications - you need to begin McDougalling. Life changing!

Life saving information!

This book is like having a shelf full of texts sitting in one tidy area of your bookcase. It is unlike any dog book available. The environmental information is vital, not just for your Akita, but for your kids and you. You cannot accept the recommendations of agencies like the FDA and EPA when they prefer to ignore the hazards of some chemicals while minimizing the adverse health effects of others--you need to educate yourself, and this book does just that. It will save you thousands in vet bills by teaching you how to use preventative measures. You cannot afford not to have this book and you cannot raise your Akita without understanding the health and nutritional requirements of the breed.

This is, simply put, the DEFINITIVE volume on the breed. Anyone who admires the breed or shares their life with an Akita will find this volume not only fascinating, but invaluable. In fact, dog lovers in general will benefit from the information included. EVERYTHING is covered in great detail in this very beautiful THICK volume which makes a beautiful coffee table addition. EVERYTHING - historical context, breeding and whelping, puppyhood, adult life, senior life, behavioral issues, rescue...and THE most comprehensive collection of medical information accumulated to date - edited by the remarkable Dr. Jean Dodds, the veterinary authority on Akita endocrine and immune issues. The medical information allowed me to navigate with my vet through a complex process - and I was able to understand what was happening and to make educated decisions on the care of my Akita as a result. I must say I was also surprised at the cost of this book - when you receive it you will see that comparable texts are sold for twice the price. This is an absolute must have! It's beautifully produced with wonderful pictures and an easy to reference index. It's really a tremendous accomplishment. I wish every important subject had a volume like this. Don't hesitate - I feel this book has undoubtedly extended my dogs' lives because I'm able to provide breed-specific care for them...and you can't always expect your vet to have the information that this volume does. It's a result of decades of information gathering and evaluation from a legend in the breed. I've never met Barbara Bouyet, but I can tell you that we benefit from sharing the information she provides in this text ALL THE TIME.

I bought the first volume and thought it was invaluable. The second one contains even more... I have used the information as a resource both with my own dogs and as a volunteer for Akita Rescue. The sections on health and diseases in Akitas have been expanded to give a better understanding of how the environment impacts the health of the Akita. I am studying the chapters on health and puppies intently now as I prepare for my second Akita. I've passed on information regarding auto-immune conditions to my own vet to use as resource material. Barbara has outdone herself and her devotion to the Akita is evident as she commits herself to educating others.

Priceless!

After Bouyet's first book, I was in line for the second one long before it was available, and it didn't disappoint. There can be no price put on the information contained, including health, history and nutrition. There are numerous examples of non-traditional remedies that your vet will never tell you! There is more information on nutrition than your vet will ever know! There is a view to the 'whole dog' that no one but an experienced owner/rescuer and devoted, full time student of the breed could ever have developed. And Bouyet is willing to share it - along with touching and beautiful photos that span generations of development and changes in the Akita breed. Artwork by Alicia Meyer enhances the imagery, and Dr. Jean Dodds' involvement is a huge bonus as, in my opinion, she is THE authority on the Akita immune and endocrine system.
On the surface, this is a gorgeous coffee-table book that depicts the love the author has for our sometimes difficult breed, but open the cover and you'll find an amazing wealth of knowledge that no other book can deliver.

This book is in a class of its own. The author, a genius, was a rising star in his profession when he got brain cancer at 32. That was twelve years ago. He brings to bear rigid Western scientific discipline and research but also brings in the critical tools of the food we eat and how we feel and what we do with our bodies to support its natural anti-cancer defense. It is awesome.

In "Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life," French-born psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. David Servan-Schreiber discusses his fifteen-year battle with brain cancer. Although conventional treatments worked initially, the cancer recurred. Fortunately, he has been cancer-free for the past seven years, and he attributes his success to an anti-cancer regimen that, he asserts, boosts the body's natural defenses. Dr. Servan-Schreiber does NOT encourage cancer patients to reject their doctors' advice concerning surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. However, he does believe that there is nothing to lose and everything to gain by making changes in one's diet, level of physical activity, psychological attitude, and environment.

This book is an informative and eye-opening look at the mechanisms of cancer, explained in a way that a layman can understand. There are many helpful charts, tables, and illustrations that clarify the sometimes technical information about the latest research on the genesis and progression of cancer. The author maps out how rogue cells are nourished and conversely, how they can be starved of the nourishment that they need to multiply. Although researchers have undoubtedly made a great deal of progress, Servan-Schreiber assures us that we have a long way to go before we can declare victory over the many types of cancer that still plague mankind. In addition, he includes well-chosen quotations from literature (such as Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich"), philosophy, and other physicians and scientists to illustrate his points, some of which deal with our fear of dying without having lived a full and meaningful life.

"Anti-Cancer" is a personal, touching, instructive, and thought-provoking. Whether or not the reader is interested in adopting the author's recommendations concerning diet, exercise, meditation, and other lifestyle changes, no one who completes this book will ever think about cancer or about the human body in quite the same way. Servan-Schreiber is not a new-age charlatan who advocates far-out therapies. Everything that he suggests is based on solid and well-documented research, and he includes numerous citations from scientific journals.

Although no one wants to confront a fatal illness, Servan-Schreiber contends that his battle with cancer has had a positive aspect. "By exposing life's brevity, a diagnosis of cancer can restore life's true flavor." Forced for the first time to look into his soul and evaluate his approach to living, he realized that he had been caught up in a treadmill that allowed him little time to appreciate the importance of mind-body equilibrium, inner peace, relationships with loved ones, and personal fulfillment. Everyone, no matter what the state of his or her health, can benefit from this stimulating and provocative work.

Book Review: Anticancer: A New Way of Life (Viking, 2008) by David Servan-Schreiber

Both an informational book and an autobiography, Anticancer begins with the premise that all of us have cancer in our bodies, but not all of us will develop the disease. The author, David Servan-Schreiber tells his story of how he discovered his own brain cancer while testing an MRI machine, how he felt about his diagnosis, and what issues he faced. This autobiography is truly fascinating as Servan-Schreiber lowers the privacy walls surrounding his life, to allow us in. He has been a cancer survivor for 16 years. David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and cofounder of the Center for Integrative Medicine.

As a physician who has also been a patient himself, Servan-Schreiber wants the West to know what the recent discoveries in the world of cancer research are and how they can benefit us. The major points of Anticancer:

* The Western diet creates conditions for the disease.
* Our bodies are making defective cells all of the time.
* Each of us also has a body designed to fight the process of tumor development.
* Sugar and stress do feed cancer.
* There are physical effects from feelings of helplessness and unhealed wounds which affect our ability to restore our health.

Benefits of reading Anticancer: Servan-Schreiber explains:

* How to find the right blend of traditional and alternative care
* How to minimize environmental toxins
* How to reap the benefits of exercise, yoga, and meditation
* How to learn about ways to achieve life balance and good nutrition to combat it
* How to develop a science-based anticancer diet

Servan-Schreiber places a major emphasis on our food. Many cancer patients, relying on their oncologists' advice, believe that they can eat whatever they wish, thinking it will have no bearing on their wellness. Servan-Schreiber states that this simply isn't true. He outlines the importance of food and its synergy with the body showing the research behind eating well. Key topics include refined sugars, red meat, fats, organic, garlic, turmeric, and toxins.

Also included within the book's middle is an Anticancer Action Plan, for quick reference. The Plan highlights foods to eat regularly and is well designed. (The number one vegetable is garlic.)

Anticancer also discusses how to avoid toxins, the need for exercise, how our mind and body works together, how to overcome fear, talking about death, and notes the recent research into cell phone risks.

Anticancer should be read by everyone. It is a tool for cancer prevention, and a wellness guide for those living with the disease. Anticancer offers considerable scientific-backed research to support its lifetime living plan. The only negative--it wasn't published quickly enough. I have personally recommended this book to others who live with cancer.

When I stumbled upon this book I was simply amazed to read that the author had asked the same questions I asked my doctors and he received the same answers I got which was "there is nothing you can do for yourself". Grrr...

I searched and searched the internet for answers as I wanted to fight my cancer or at the very least make a big improvement in my survivability. In time I learned to change my diet drastically (adding omega-3 via flaxseed oil), exercise daily, get out into the Sun, and learn to meditate to reduce stress. I now follow the Budwig protocol which basically agrees with the author's suggestions.

I wish I had found this book sooner as it would have shortened my search for answers. Nonetheless, I love the book and highly recommend it to everyone who needs a good dose of reality about cancer.

With all those books on breastfeeding out there, you might be tempted to buy the good-old question-answer based book. But believe me you will still have the: Is this what a doctor might tell me? question back there in your head. This book, however; presents you with more complete answers that experts on the breastfeeding subject have studied. You will end up being an expert on breastfeeding yourself. Even friends call me to check a prescripted medicine on the chapter that classifies almost-all prescriptions with scales as to how they affect and enter the breastmilk. Be assured, you will be fully satisfied and, as I found myself; exceed your expectations.

As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

I have been following the ideas for around 4 weeks now and couldn't agree more. Even though my goal was not to lose weight, I've lost 10 pounds just by eating better - according to color! And believe it or not, I feel better as well. Buy this book and a bright highlighter. You'll soon be marking your favorite brightly colored foods - and then filling your grocery cart with them. Well written, easy to understand and chock full of references - it simply makes sense.

It is now 5 months later since I first reviewed this book and I've loaned out my copy to several people - all are experiencing similar results as I have. I continue to eat "by color", my weight has stayed off, I can't remember when I was last sick and what was merely a good book has become a terrific reference book. If you forget what particular benefits a certain color food has - simply look it up - layed out clearly in the book - by color of course!

NOTE: It is now January 2007 and I continue to eat according to "colors". My weight has stayed off, I was not sick even one day in 2006 and every week I fill up a plastic container (for work snacks) filled with vegetable color!

Eating Between the Lines has a wealth of information about food. This book explains what the product labels really mean. I've never come across such a book before. It is presented in such a way that it keeps my attention. So, it is not just another boring nutrition book full of big words and numbers. I could really see taking this book to the grocery store for tips on healthy eating. I might feel a little silly if people look at me funny but I am sure the health benefits would be worth it. Maybe one day I would even know the info well enough to not have to bring the book to the store. But for now, I will brave the possibility of looking silly because a person just isn't born knowing the truth behind all the food labels.

Even though I am a sustainable food business owner, I found so much new and helpful information in this book. Stewart has done a thorough job of researching and explaining, in language that everyone can understand, the labyrinthine inner-workings of the "natural," and not-so-natural food business. Eating Between the Lines should be the handbook every shopper keeps in his or her grocery cart!

I like this book because it's not agenda-driven or political. Kimberly Lord Stewart focuses on the yawning gap between a lot of people and the healthy food they want to eat, and feed their families. She stays away from the politics and answers questions like "What's the difference between organic and regular milk, and is organic worth the extra money?" and "How can I tell whether this fish is safe to eat?"

Stewart did a ton of research with authoritative sources. She knows her stuff.

If you want to read a philosophical treatise on food, buy The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals . But if you're trying to figure out which cereal to feed your 3-year-old, buy "Eating Between the Lines."

Educational, Entertaining, Excellent!

Ten reasons I highly recommend Kimberly Lord Stewart's "Eating Between the Lines":

1. It's informative without being didactic or boring.
2. The anecdotes are entertaining and thought-provoking.
3. Several times during the reading of this book, I found myself saying out loud: "Wow! I didn't know that!"
4. I've gone back to the book several times to use as a reference before grocery shopping.
5. The book now holds an esteemed place in my house--above the stove with my dog-eared cookbooks.
6. It's obvious that Ms. Stewart has thoroughly researched this subject.
7. This has to be the best treatise on U.S. food laws written for the average American consumer.
8. I understand now the differences and similarities between organic, natural, farm-raised (etc, etc.) foods.
9. There is no agenda here---just thorough, reasoned, interesting writing.
10. Ms. Stewart's passion for food leaps right through the pages of "Reading Between the Lines"!

I've been a professional chef for 28 years and was startled by the huge amount of product information I was able to learn from Kimberly Lord Stewart's research. I recommend this book to all of my culinary students and anyone who wants to learn more about the foods they cook and eat.

Well, being a French trained cook, I didn't believe there was life without butter, creme fraiche, or triple cream cheese. A wake-up call of high cholesterol made me look for a tool to help reduce my numbers.

This appealing book has certainly helped me change my lifestyle into a healthier one. Her book, with excellent food resources and recipes has kept me interested and satiated for over a year! I have dropped 50 points and plan on giving a copy to my primary care physician for her office. I don't even miss those high fat ingredients of yesteryear. (ok, maybe a little!) Thanks, Catherine for your creativity and meticulous and delectable recipes. I await volume 2!

We're discovering this cook book and we're just loving it. Last night we did a vegetarian meal that featured the Healthy Lentil Salad with Tomatoes and Radishes, Hearts of Palm, Tomato and Asparagus Salad, and the Romaine Lettuce with Chickpeas, Feta and Lemon Shallot Vinaigrette.... DELISH and totally filling.

We're also big fans of:

Chicken, Arugula, Sun-Dried Tomato, Olive, and Feta Cheese Pasta Salad
Chicken Fajitas with Homemade Guacamole (YUM! - Served it at a dinner party and it was a huge hit)
Feta and Fresh Basil Chicken Burgers
Turkey Loaf
Southwestern Breakfast Burrito

The recipes are very easy to make. The ingredients affordable. And the taste is something everyone in the family will appreciate!!!

This is the first diet book I have read that I really feel I can do it. It teaches you a new way of eating that is healthy, but good and the same time. This is something I plan on continuing the rest of my life. She explained everything wonderfully. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble losing weight. I have accually bought the book for friends who wanted help with weight. She also provides tons of quick and easy recipes you will love. This will be the last diet book you ever buy!

I hate the idea that being thin is healthy. Just because you are thin doesn't mean you are healthy. That said I wanted to say that I really enjoyed this book! I read it in two days, it usually takes me a month or so to read diet books. Diet books are so boring! This isn't really a diet book but a motivating to be healthy book!
The ideas behind the book are so simple, to lose weight and to maintain that weight. There are tips in here that seem so obvious but we tend to forget, we beat ourselves up and then start the process all over again.

This book is a great sequel to Anne Fletcher's previous book, Thin for Life on eating healthy and losing weight. While I recommend reading Thin for Life first for a lot of great tips on motivation and long-term strategies, Eating Thin for Life has inspiring stories from people who lost weight and a number of strategies as well.

The best aspects of this book are its recipes. It has a short section with suggestions of quick, balanced meals and snacks of set calorie value that you can put together with little to no cooking. Additionally, it has a longer section containing tons of recipes of all kinds - salads, main dishes, breakfasts, quick breads, desserts, etc. The recipes are surprisingly delicious and satisfying for how healthy they are, and I've already learned new cooking techniques for creating healthier recipes of my own. This book has helped me make a permanent switch to a better lifestyle and lose weight in the process!

Outstanding resource!

If you are a life-long yo-yo dieter like me, this is a book that will give you hope for your future efforts in the weight loss struggle. Anne Fletcher has provided helpful weight loss and maintenance tips and strategies from the "masters"...those folks who have lost weight and kept it off for years. It's a "must read" for anyone who is tired of the weight loss merry-go-round. Very encouraging!
