How to deal with a serious disease

Review Date: 2006-08-10
This excellent book is a personal story about prostate cancer contracted by the author and how he dealt with it. He also very nicely summarizes his extensive research on the disease and how to treat it. However, it is much more than a book aboout prostate cancer. It is a template for how to deal with any serious disease. Dr. Priest gives us a picture of the emotional turmoil surrounding being diagnosed with cancer, how some of the shortcomings of the medical establishment add to the turmoil, and how to navigate through the maze with the help of family and friends. Although the subject is cancer, the author has writtten a positive and encouraging account of how to deal with it. I highly recommend the book.

A Must Read If Treatment Option is Radiation

This is the fourth book I've read on prostate cancer and easily the most upbeat and practical for a prostate cancer victim who has the option of choosing radiation treatment, specifically 3D Conformal Radiation. Dr. Priest is an excellent writer who takes you through the day to day process of getting 3D conformal radiation treatment, which is a two month process. What he describes is the reality of going to the hospital every single day for two months and dealing with the minor episodes that occur. Although the process is not without its problems, they are far less than a typical surgery patient goes through. As Dr. Priest explains, doctors know better than anybody all of the problems that can occur with any major surgery - and prostate cancer surgery is major with the potential for some serious side affects. Radiation therapy is not a walk in the park but it is far less threatening than surgery. The day to day diary approach Dr. Priest takes makes for some very easy reading. The processes that he describes, including the drinking to of water before each and every treatment are exactly what I was told my my radiation oncologist. I haven't started my treatments yet, but this book did a lot to ease my fears. Intertwined in the diary are sidebars covering some of the prostate cancer technical issues which seem to be up-to-date. If you are considering radiation treatment using 3d conformal radiation, this book is a must read.

Review Date: 2006-03-11
This is not just another medical book of complicated facts and terminologies.

Instead, this is a clearly written book of personal experiences which the author, Dr Priest, leads the reader with great care so as to clarify the process of dealing with prostate cancer. Dr Priest explains typical human feelings that are common during a period of fear, uncertainty and indecision. This is a journal which follows his own ordeal through his medical care comparing all modern day procedures which are now available to deal with prostate cancer.

The book is easy to read and certainly captured "this" readers' attention from page one till the very last. It opened my eyes to information that I previously found confusing.

I read it once and I will no doubt read it again and again. This is a great reference book that every man and woman should read and keep.

Thank you, Dr. Priest, for such up to date and concise information and putting it all together in a clear and readable form.

Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery: Proven Options From A Doctor And Cancer Survivor by retired physician James D. Priest is drawn from a personal journal that he began when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dr. Priest learned that although urologists typically recommend surgical removal of the prostate in such cases, there are other and alternate treatments that can be as effective as surgery but with less risk of such life-changing complications as impotence and incontinence. In addition to Dr. Priest's own compelling journal entries, Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery features twenty brief articles on important aspects of prostate cancer, as well as a foreword by Archbishop Dessmond Tutu, who is himself a prostate cancer survivor. Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery is especially recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the onset of prostate cancer.

This book makes more sense than anything I have read in a long time, and I have read just about every low-carb book there is. It adds a new perspective
by tying everything together. The first part describes the theory and science behind all low-carb diets and does a superb job of clarifying the differences between low-carb and reduced-carb diets. There is also an excellent discussion of good carbs and the glycemic index. The "choose how you want to lose" approach with the accompanying menus is both practical and useful. Chapters on stocking the pantry and dining out are outstanding. There are also lots of recipes that are easy, really good, and do not require a lot of exotic or expensive ingredients. All in all, this is a first rate guide to lower-carb living.

This cookbook is great! There are some traditional dishes that have been revamped so they are still flavorful, but lower in fat. The recipes are very easy to make with ingredients that can be found almost anywhere. I have substituted ingredients(like another reviewer), and the results have still been incredible. I have made several recipes including the Pasta with Scallops in Creamy Tomato Sauce, The Pasta with Shrimp Florentine, and a few of the muffin recipes. Everything has turned out very well so far. I am delighted, my husband is delighted, and most likely you will be as well.

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

I use this book in my household extensively and have since it came out. I also use this book in my private practice to teach my patients how to cook healthy. There is a section on how to buy meats, cheeses etc and why using whole grains and lean meats is a better option than processed, high fat versions. I use Sandra's recipes for patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, high cholesterol and for weight loss. There are 600 recipes so it does not become boring. The best part is that once you realize just how simple healthful cooking can be, you can adapt your favorite recipes using Sandra's tips. I say, give this book to a son or daughter moving off to college, or to a newlywed couple, then get a copy for yourself. If you love pizza, lasagna, meatloaf, hamburgers and fries, stroganoff and fettucine alfredo, you need to buy this book.

I have owned this cookbook for years and, regardless of what new cookbook I buy, I always find myself coming back to these easy, healthy, and delicious recipes. The ingredients are readily available; instructions are clear and thorough. My family, even my husband, is particularly fond of the "new" versions of classic dishes (e.g. beef stroganoff, macaroni and cheese) as well as the innovative recipes. I've regularly given this book for wedding showers and house warmings. It is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

No more suffering men that don't know what's happening to them, no more cries for help and no more complains from women, get this book and you'll be ok. A good book but it found the solutions in "Volume II - Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. ... Book on CD-Rom for PC & Mac Computers" by Platinum Millennium to be of much more use then the ones presented here

I had anticipated that this book would be the same as all of the others that I have read in my quest to maintain my youthful look and feel, however I was absolutely shocked. Typically the books I have read have one or two chapters that contain content that I can relate too, considering people my age (35) generally do not think about the aging process yet. I sit at a desk, but do not want to look and feel like I do. This insightful and personal way that the auther addresses not only ideas that help me in the long run, but things I can do to change me here and now. I have every belief that if I try these techniques, I will remain Forever Young. A must read for anyone that wants to LIVE life at its best.

As a young woman, not born in the United States, I am constantly reading to improve my english and the understanding of the meaning of the words. I find out that reading a novel of a love story or mystery tale can be exciting and once in a while I get what people call a page turner. But never I read a book meant to inspire or teach me health or improvement of life to be easy to read, This book by Mr. Frank is book I could not put down. I read in two days and usually take me a week or more if I do finish a book, sometimes I get bored and put books down and never finish. I am reading this book for second time. It does not preach to me but teaches me.I like that it is good for women even though written by a man. He must know alot about women.I learn several things about my skin and how to keep my body clean inside that I have already started. If he is really as old as booksay then all men if they are smart and want to keep a good women should read this book and do what it says. Especially chapter ten, Keeping your sex life young. I hope he will write more books.I also think this book should be written in Spanish because my people do not have this kind of teacher available to them.It would be big seller in Latin countries. This book is Bible for the Body and people even younger than me should read this book to learn how to stay young. I am 30 years old and wish I had this book at 20 years old. Thank you Mr. Frank

I am in my thirties and I have always wondered why a book is either written specifically for men or for women. In reading Bill Frank's book, it is quite apparent that he practices what he preaches about relationships. As a married woman, I always believed that it would be easier to maintain my fitness level if I could do a program with my husband. Bill's book does exactly that. The information is not only extremely informative but is explained in such a way that we both can understand it and apply it to our own particular needs. It has even greatly improved our love life. We recommend this book to any couple who want to grow healthier, closer together and as Bill says, maximize their lives.

This book was given to me as a gift, and what a great gift it is! I didn't need convincing about the importance of keeping fit, building muscle, losing fat and other tips to keep you feeling and looking young, but found myself with renewed dedication after reading this book (and having my second child).

I found the chapters on diet and weight lifting particularly helpful. Bill Frank gives easy to follow advice on both and the book even has pictures to help the beginners in the gym. It was easy to make my own fitness and diet routine with Bill Frank's guidance.

This book is very easy to read and get through the first time--but I think you'll be going back over and over again to get great advice and knowledge about staying forever young. While you may not use every bit of information provided, I think just about everyone would find most of the book beneficial.

I would definitely recommed this book to anyone--no matter what your age.

I don't recall who the publisher is, but this supposed 3-year book used to come out every three years nearly a year after the fact -- meaning the book was good for only two years --and has a handy chart in the back to refer to. I wish an updated version were available. All I can find here is an out of date biorhythm book covering the past 3 years through 1999. I mean, who wants to buy a book to see how they might have been faring a year ago??? Not taking this all too seriously . . . but the logic eludes me.

A must-read for hockey lovers! Whether you like Michigan Hockey or any other team, this book is for you. Bacon makes this history story of the Wolverine skaters extremely fun and joyous reading. If you are a Michigan fan, you'd enjoy reading all the details and stories; if you (so wrongly) chose another team to cheer -- you'll become curious as to its own history.
I especially loved the parts of the book (which I consider as "Hockey chanting for Idiots") detailing the rich content and background behind some of what you hear in Yost Ice arena. After reading it, watching the games was so much more fun!

The idea is simple. Write an engaging story recounting the coming of age of a first class collegiate hockey program and spice it with behind the scene details, locker room interviews and humorous anecdotes. The execution is outstanding. Blue Ice takes the reader on a very enjoyable trip looking at the beginnings of college hockey at the University of Michigan, from playing outdoors on the frozen Huron River, to the recent trips that Wolverine skaters have made to the Frozen Four championships. The bonus for readers is getting a sports version of "Connections," with the athletic stories enveloped and intertwined in the history of the time, showing how seemingly unrelated events can influence each other. Easy and entertaining to read, delightful to give as a gift, when it was over, we wanted a sequel.

This is a very informative and insightful look into the rich tradition of Michigan Hockey. The writing is tremendous with great personal interviews with former players and coaches and other people well connected to the program. I loved the off-the-ice stories the most. It is not abook about statistics and generic history. Bacon digs deep into the people involved in the program and relays their stories in a way that makes you feel like you are part of it. You get right inside the locker room, classroom and team parties as well. It is a very easy read and always keeps you entertained.

As for the book itself, it delivers what it's supposed to in terms of a basic grasp of medical calculations. Very practical as its applied to the current pharmaceutical market.

This book is a required text in my nursing program and it has been wonderful. I really needed practice brushing up on math and this book leads you from math basics all the way through to various methods of medication and IV calculation. One unique feature of this text: 3 different methods for calculating medications are introduced (ratio & proportion, formula, and dimensional analysis.) You determine which method you prefer for completing medication problems. The medication examples in the book are then worked through step-by-step based on all 3 methods. I simply study my preferred method of solving problems (ratio & proportion) and disregard the other 2 methods. Each chapter includes pre and post tests and there is a CD-ROM that contains over 500 practice problems. I find the book easy to understand, even if you are self-teaching. There are lots of practice problems and answers. This book is well worth the money!

This book is fantastic! I love the recipes! I think it is great that the book provides more information than just "the diet". This book really shows how to incorporate a new lifestyle rather than just a diet. I love how it shows a way to enjoy food and have an indulgence, but still have a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime. Excellent Job!!

Since my cancer diagnosis four years ago, I have been given and have bought dozens of books about coping with cancer. This book was by far the most helpful to me. It does exactly what it says it does. It keeps patients organized and informed. It helped me so much to see how other people cope with everything from treatment side effects, to making plans, to communicating needs--- everything. I would give this to anyone who has just been newly diagnosed-- or who loves someone who is newly diagnosed.

This book has been an invaluable resource to me as I navigate the maze of lung cancer material, treatment options, clinical trials, etc. Joanie has done a fabulous job of covering every topic, no matter how painful, from begining to end of this painful journey. Three of my family members also have the book so we can all refer to it prior to treatment and for questions that arise. I highly recommend the book.

As newly diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with spread to the brain I found The Cancer Patients Workbook to be the best one- stop source of information I have discovered.

Everything from what to expect from treatment side-effects to experimental treatments is covered as well as great material on coping with the diagnosis of cancer.

I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking for a way to deal with the beast that is cancer.

I bought this book for my mother the week following her diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer. This book was a blessing in the early days of diagnosis. It offered hope and guidance. Joanie Willis provides excellent information on nutrition, diet, exercise and vitamins which doctors often don't address. We have used many of her suggestions and have found them helpful as we, as a family, battle this disease. Ms. Willis also provides hope which you need after receiving devastating news. I would recommend this book to not only patients, but family members. This is the first book I would recommend to family members after their loved one receives a diagnosis.
