I purchased this book because I have read Cressey on T-nation and subscribe to his newsletter. I knew he would be one to write an excellent well rounded routine. It is hard to filter all the garbage routines that just over train an individual on press, press press your way to greatness. I love the balance his book gives you and the total strength you will gain from this approach. I would recommend this book to anyone on any level of fitness.
It is worth the money to buy the Magnificent Mobility DVD mentioned in the book, as well.
Thanks for a great addition to my gym library!

Maximum Strength by Eric Cressey is an excellent book which gives an extremely detailed step by step program to build strength.

As a regular gym goer who has just been turning up and doing my routine without making significant gains for a while, I found this book easy to relate to. The book is geared to those that want to get stronger, not necessarily bigger. It was exactly the book I was looking for.

I was a little sceptical of the book when I first flicked through it at the bookstore because it went against what I've been conditioned to think about working out. However, after seeing so many positive reviews on Amazon and online forums I thought I would buy it and try it out.

It reads easily, the pictures and diagrams are easy to follow and the light hearted humour makes it easier to read.

That said, I haven't gotten a single ounce stronger from reading this book. On Monday 11 August I will start my 16 week program and due to finish on Saturday 29 November so hopefully the results equal the quality of the book.

This book is outstanding. Eric has generated a program that will help nearly anyone get stronger, no matter where you're starting out at. The warm-ups themselves are worth the price of the book, and the program itself is amazing.

The exercises are clearly described and the pictures really help illustrate the intent of each exercise. Overall, a very, very good product.

Maximum Strength is an excellent book that provides the reader with everything they need to get stronger in 16 weeks. Besides including a well detailed 4 phase weight training program, Eric also includes many extras such as warm-up routines, mobility exercises, and soft tissue work that will make you feel great as well as increase your strength. Great advice on nutrition and future training as well. Maximum Strength really is a book that anyone in weight training or looking to start, should read.

A great holistic approach to increasing strength. You get warm-ups with foam roller and mobility exercises, 4 day a week upper/lower body split routine, nutrition suggestions and even a chapter on the "muscle between your ears". I plan on finishing the 16 week routine by end of October and then repeating it next February.

I found this book extremly useful and easy to read... it covered the latest research on brain and memory, in addition to giving tips on how to prevent memory loss..
Dr. Fotuhi's credentials are very impressive and I hope he will continue passing on his expertise to us as he has in this book

Informative and useful

The book begins by pointing out that sometimes people and it seems even doctors mistake depression or other health problems which can be treated successful for Alzheimer's disease which may be untreatable.

He then offers a ten step plan for prevention of memory loss, which consists of proper diet, as well as daily physical and mental exercise. Some nutrients that have been found useful for better functioning of the brain are blueberries, spinach, and other fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, almonds and other nutrients rich in vitamin E, less salt in diet, as well as general nutrition that contributes to low cholesterol and normal blood pressure. High blood pressure and high cholesterol seem to be detrimental to memory. He further suggests cutting the quantity of food people consume, perhaps in half. Fasting is good. Daily physical exercise envigorates the entire body including the brain. As as the saying goes "use it or lose it", constant mental stimulation, learning new things, solving puzzles, challenging oneself intellectually in different ways through reading or even calculating totals in one's head when grocery shopping are all helpful to keep the brain active and in good shape throughout one's life.

What Majid Fotuhi told me.

I met Dr Fotuhi at an aging seminar. He was the keynote speaker and I gave the lunch hour presentation on another related but non-medical topic. I visited with Dr. Fotuhi during a break. I asked him about the benefit of anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen because he had discussed how brain plaque was a contributing factor for Alzheimer's. He told they had a beneficial affect. However, a daily regimen of ibuprofen would never be recommended due to the so-called risks of stomach irritation.

He gave me a passionate account of his tests of rats involving adding blueberries to their diets. He said the results were phenomenal and that his family has a serving of blueberries with their breakfast most mornings. He recommended that I do the same.

He's a very impressive man and I suggest you see him live if you ever have the opportunity.

I'm not a doctor. This information is not medical advice. I simply wanted to recount an interesting and relevant conversation I had with the doctor.

Highly Recommended, Very Reader Friendly

This recently released book on Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most reader friendly book I've come across in quite a while. I've seen this book first-hand, and it is impressive. It describes the complicated neurology of the brain in an easy to follow manner. Also, Dr. Fotuhi describes (in plain language) the latest AD research findings and discusses their implications. If I had to recommend only two books on Alzheimer's disease for caregivers it would be this one and, "The 36-Hour Day." In contrast to some books on AD, Dr. Fotuhi's book is optimistic. Not only does he describe how AD develops, but more importantly he discusses what people can do to reduce their individual risk factors for developing AD. I find myself constantly recommending this book to all the families of patients participating in AD research projects I coordinate.

Will I get Alzheimer's Disease?

So many of us worry about whether we might get this disease.
Dr. Fotuhi says that of the many who fear they may get it, only a
very few will get it.

He describes our brain in a very interesting fashion. He explains how our brain stores our memories, and, what amazes me,
how the brain knows what to store. We all know what we were doing when 9/ll happened. We certainly don't remember what we
were doing on Sept. l0!

It is a fascinating read and teaches us a lot about the brain,
and how to protect ourselves from memory loss, about advances
that are being made toward a cure.

An easy book to read-not too scientific.

Having a three year old daughter and one year old twin boys, I was
definitely neglecting my needs. Mother Nurture helped change my
perspective. I believed I had to sacrifice and give everything I had to
my children. I read Mother Nurture and learned this is not true.
I now give to my children, and find time to give to myself as well.

The greatest peace Mother Nurture gave to me was telling me my thoughts and
feelings were normal and needed to acknowledged.
... Now, I use your book
as a tool. When I begin neglecting myself,
I turn to the book and the lessons it contains.

I have a number of friends pregnant for the second time. As their
babies are brought into this world,
my present will be a copy of Mother Nurture. Mother Nurture is a book every
mother needs.

I started to read Mother Nurture: A Mother's Guide to Health in Body, Mind, and Intimate Relationships a few days after my second child was born. Needless to say, I was a little ambitious in estimating how long I could actually stay awake to read, and the book sat on my nightstand for weeks. Once things around the house settled down, I picked it up again - and I'm sure glad I did! I found the book invaluable. Mother Nurture is a must-have resource for every mother and mother-to-be, and it wouldn't hurt for a few fathers out there to read it, either.

We as mothers juggle more tasks, work longer hours, and sleep less than our own mothers did. Family and friends, who once provided support and an occasional break from the kids, are scattered across the country. Yes, raising a child is harder than ever. So if you're feeling tired, cranky, overly anxious or downright depressed, trust that you're not alone. You, like thousands of other women, may be suffering from Depleted Mother's Syndrome.

In this ground-breaking book, psychologist Rick Hanson, acupuncturist and nutritionist Jan Hanson, and obstetrician/gynecologist Ricki Pollycove explore in depth the psycho logical, emotional and physical stresses of motherhood. They identify key risk factors for Depleted Mother's Syndrome and - referencing homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, and western medicine - provide a balanced approach to getting your mind and body back on track. This book includes everything you need to know to help you feel your best, from meditation techniques to guidelines for suggested daily vitamin intake and ways to improve your post-children relationship with your significant other.

It's an essential reference book for every mother's library!

Mother Nurture is a must-read for all new mums (and dads). It feels like having a friend, coach, and doctor talking with you. The collaboration of 3 professionals has led to a truly holistic approach to guiding mothers as they embark upon (yes it's cliche but true) "the most difficult and rewarding" job in life. There's lots of specific, straight-forward, take action suggestions along with helpful anecdotes to illustrate points. I found this book to be of great comfort, inspiration, and help.

I have been overwhelmed with wonderful, but sometimes redundant parenting advice. It is refreshing to have such wonderful information about how to keep moms from losing their balance so they can raise the kids they want to raise. The authors have provided the strategies for moms to get their needs met, which is the key to meeting the needs of a child. Offering practical ideas and information on many crucial topics, including stress, moods, energy, and keeping a couple strong, along with addressing health and work issues, Mother Nurture is truly the most valuable book all parents can have.....or give. I highly recommend reading this book as part of your bedtime routine.

The exercises found in this book are great, when you are first diagnosed and the coming years.

It is a great tool to have because you do not deal with your MS the same way on a daily basis. There are times that, even if it is in written form, you need to look for answers.

The way the book is written, it is a sure sign that you do not have to have MS to write a good book, but as an MSer you do know what we face every day.

Great book, will keep using for future reference.

this book provides the person with MS or their caregiver with much needed information on emotions, thought problems, communications, and other areas in which MS symptoms affect functioning. it is well-written and quite easy to read. it offers a nice summary of functioning as well as a few strategies for managing the different symptoms. i found that this book is a good augmentation to the MS Workbook, which provides a more comprehensive background and worksheets than the current book. several times, the author stated something that i hadn't read before, and i wanted to read the original source, but none were provided. i only discovered about one dozen typographical errors, no errors of fact or grammar. this is a very good book for the non-clinician and non-academic.

As a medical professional, RN, I feel qualified to tell everyone that this book saved my life. After 12 years of Premarin, I had developed every side effect listed in this book. I thought I had a terrible disease process happening to my body. Then I asked myself " If a patient came to you with these symptoms, what would be the first thing you asked that patient." The answer was simple, "What medications are you taking?" The culprit was Premarin!!! And I now have a new lease on life. I take the Tri Est/ Progesterone discussed in this book and I feel 20 years younger, some say I look it too!

It should also be read by every doctor who writes HRT prescriptions for their patients.

I am a 53 year old woman who underwent menopause at 43, and since I still have my uterus, I struggled with Premarin and it's ugly sidekick Provera for almost 8 years. I even tried Dr. John Lee's Progesterone alternative, but to no avail. Then finally, a female friend suggested that I go see her naturopathic MD here in Scottsdale. She put me on the "naturals" and within a few months I was feeling better than I had in years. With just a couple more "tweaks" I was feeling great, and mentally I knew I was now free from all the looming fears of HRT induced breast or uterine cancer.

I have (and would) recommend this book to any woman who will listen to it's message. It is a thorough, direct and comprehensive alternative to horse pee and PMS (as we "natural women" refer to our previous regimen) and it is my belief that these are the hormone replacements of the future. Hillary Johnson's fascinating book, first touched upon in her article in Rolling Stone is a compelling read. The poor response by the CDC and the NIH to an epidemic that has now affected more lives than both AIDS and Lung Cancer is tragic. Ms. Johnson's beautifully woven story (though at times technical) would make for a very moving film in the tradition of And the Band Played On.

The author does an outstanding job of revealing how some of our most "respected" agencies in western medicine attempt to deal with what they can not define, despite what the patient says. Through constant shifts in focus, we are shown how several different groups deal with this syndrome. The writings illicit a tremendous amount of rage at the incompetence, pain at the ignorance, and confusion in the beurocratic anchors. This book reads like a mystery, and keeps you intrigued until the last page. It concludes like the reality of the search for this anomoly- with no 'pat' answers.

I read this book when it first came out. I would highly recommend it to any health care professional, any sufferer, or any relative of any sufferer. Society has come a long way over the years. Around 1990 I took a copy of one Dr. Jay Goldstein's books on chronic fatigue to a lecture on another subject. One of the other attendees picked it up, read the title, and disdainfully tossed in back on the table declaring, "Chronic fatigue? There is no such thing. It's only depression." On the other hand, myths are still all too common.

Back to this book. It leaves me dumbfounded how many of the issues clearly dealt with in this book are still reported incorrectly. Example: Epstein-Barr virus. It has widely been reported that since EB virus does not appear in clusters/epidemics, and that antibodies are present in a very high percent of the population, attributing chronic-fatigue to and EBV outbreak is, well, wrong. And that the doctor(s) should have known that.

However, in the book is it made clear that the doctors at Incline Village where an outbreak occured did know that. So when one of the doctors started seeing many of his patient's showing up with positive blood tests for EBV, he sent some samples to a researcher. The researcher found an antibody pattern that was not indicative of new infections, but rather of a recurrence or reactivation of a prior infection. This was a pattern the researcher had never seen before, and implied another cause, possible a weakening of the immune system. But not an epidemic of new EBV cases. By the way, that also argues against the assertion some have made that EBV is a possible cause, although it should be ruled out clinically.

The book is replete with many stories and issues, that differ remarkably from what is commonly reported about this issue.

One final chilling note. In the book dozens sufferers are introduced, some in depth, some obliquely. In an annex at the end of the book, the is a short follow up on many of the sufferers. What is chilling is how many have died.

The Definitive Work on Chronic Fatigue

This is the most informative book I've read on Chronic Fatigue. The reading is dry at times, but very informative. This book is about the Center for Disease Control (CDC) involvement in investigating CFS up to the date when the CDC was found quilty of misappropriation of funding for CFS research. Anyone new to the illness should have this book in their library, even if it is just used for references.

A must-read if you have ME

This book really gives you an understanding of how and why ME has been stigmatized, ridiculed and ignored as much as it has. It makes it very clear that it was not a mistake or an oversight at all but that it was in fact utterly deliberate. The pure stupidity and lack of basic human compassion involved is astounding. It's important to know how we've ended up in this mess so we can see how we might get ourselves out I think. It's also important that we not underestimate how low these people will go - its lower than you could even imagine.

A must read if you are well enough to tackle such a long non-fiction book, it'll just blow your mind and really fire you up about how badly we have all been treated historically and the...well you'd have to call them evil, people behind it all. A fantastic book to fire up your activism urges.

Connection to the workplace

Our co. had an epidemic of carpal tunnel syndrome. People would take days off and our worker'c comp. claims increased. I, as a manager, didn't understand what cps was, how our workplace could cause it and which employee complaints had merit. The illustration and text on cps are so clear that I saw which work stations were a problem and learned what I could efficiently due to eliminate some of the risk and avoid loss of productivity

"When my doctor told me I had arthritis of the hands and knees, I panicked and thought the worst. My mother is wheelchair bound with arthritis. But I learned there are a lot of things I can do to help myself stay in good condition, keep muscle around the joints balanced; and that I can live a normal life with arthritis. I have never had this condition explained to me so plainly."

"It seems that when I go to a doctor any more, I feel rushed and can't ask all my questions. The doctot seems distraught with HMOs, insurance, Medicare and so many other patients that I feel guilty taking his time to ask one more thing. When I sat down and read Dr. Wilson's book, it was just like sitting down with a doctor I could talk to, who related to my shoulder problems and tied it in with how it limited what I can do. I found his explanations for common problems forthright. My better understanding will help me prepare what to ask the next time I have to go to the doctor."

Superb Primer on How to Avoid and Deal with Arthritis

Dr. Michael R. Wilson has written a superb book here that will inform anyone who takes time to read this easy-to-follow, thorough look at our bones, joints, ligaments and tendons . . . plus all those pesky pains associated with them. The information will help you avoid having problems, reduce the amount of problems you will experience and minimize the pain and lost time you will have to suffer.

I was attracted to this book because many members of my family have arthritis or bone-related medical problems. A good friend is an orthopedic surgeon, so I had received from him good advice a long time ago: Avoid exercise that damages joints (like jogging). Beyond that, I knew very little.

As I began the book, I was a little concerned when chapter two contained many pages of medical terminology to be learned before reading the rest of the book. That chapter was the only hard and not very rewarding reading. The rest I enjoyed very much, and found easy to follow. I particularly liked the cartoons, drawings and x-rays of the various conditions and syndromes. I could often grasp with the image what a whole chapter would have had trouble conveying.

Although the book is aimed at those who are middle aged (currently, the baby boomers), there's also lots of information for younger people and the elderly. So you get the whole enchilada. That makes the book helpful in working with parents and children, as well as with one's spouse, siblings and oneself.

I particularly benefited from learning the differences between osteoarthritis (the joints wearing out) and rheumatoid arthritis (infected joints). I had questions about shoulder problems (including those I hear about on television for athletes), tennis elbow, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bifocal neck, sciatica, knee problems, heel pain, osteoporosis and gout. All of my questions were answered in more than adequate detail, and I learned important information that I didn't realize that I needed to learn.

Unexpectedly, I came away with a better understanding of how each of my joints works, how to react in an accident, and what to talk to my physicians about if I have a bone or joint problem. Although Dr. Wilson is an orthopedic surgeon, he is candid about the situations when surgery will probably make matters worse.

As I finished the book, I was thankful to the gym teacher who many years ago taught me how to fall so that I would not hurt myself.
