A Must Read For Men Who Are GrievingReview Date: 2003-05-24
This book is very readable and could be helpful to anyone (man or woman) who has more of a masculine orientation to their grieving style. It is not biased towards any particular religios pursuasion but at the same time, could be thought of as very spiritual. I recommend it as an addition to any church, synagogue, or mosque library collection.
As a reader, it was quite obvious to me that Golden "knew his stuff" when it came to the topic of masculine grief. His many years of experience in grief counseling and his own grieving process helped shape this very powerful, highly communicative, and empathetic book.
I recommend "Swallowed by a Snake: The Gift of the Masculine Side of Healing" especially to readers who have been recently bereaved (either through death or some other loss). But I also recommend it to those who are revisiting a loss that might have occurred years ago.
This is one of those books you probably will have trouble putting down.
this is an excellent bookReview Date: 2003-09-15
The best thing about this book was that it affirmed the actions that I have been taking after the death and showed me, as a man, how that was actually a way of healing. This book is a breath of fresh air compared to the more feminine you gotta "talk and cry" kinds of books. I had been getting pressure from my wife and others about not dealing with things. This book has helped me explain to them that I am indeed dealing with things but in my own way. This would be a great book for women to help them understand the men they love.

enjoyable,gets you thinking,nice photographs too.
As you may or may not know African coyly hair is quite unique in vision, texture, behaviour and probably in chemical make up too. Coily haired women around the world, go to the most extremes in terms of spending.
(Spending time, spending pain and the spending price to have African coily hair styled)
A hairstyle that we believe looks good or will help us to become socially and economically advanced.
Or maybe for our own self-esteem and maybe to attract the charms of a love interest. Either way your hair is a reflection of the state of your consciousness, your internal beliefs and your relationship with the world.
This book is like having group therapy or interviewing other women, but it is not all black women's views.I am reviewng it because I think it is worth a read.

Either way, psychologically and philosophically I believe that your hair is a reflection of the state

What about exploring physics through
african hair?
For example how much pressure, gravity and tension and tearing do we put our hair through by combing it?
let
alone excessive harsh combing.
Mathematically speaking how many of you readers can tell me how many curls/coils per inch
your hair has, and does it vary in coil and moisture?
Next question:When does the nature of the hair change and why?
(i
know it does!)
It seems to me all these books on afro hair are good and I welcome it, but we still need to be more informed
and they all seem to need better editing, just like Black American beauty magazines.I must campaign for better grammar and
less air brushed photos!!!
It is as if we like to see ourselves falsely rather than the reality of what we are...
Black
women need to demand more scientific reasoning from our books and be less competitive over black men which only fuels their
egos and as a result probably creates more baby-mothers!!!
Sorry but I had to vent out my opinions.
I give this book
four stars for the effort and time invested as a writer I know it takes time...
I maintain that it is still worth reading, more
than any carcinogenic chemical so called hair treatment that you pay for.
Anyway what do I know I am a black african british
woman!!!!
Most of you Americans think we in Britain have no trains or any kind of progressive development!!!
Anyway
if I wrote my book answering my questions that I put to you how many of you would buy it?

For sombody wanting to look deeper into Black hair...Review Date: 2006-07-09
What I also admired about this book was that it touched on the subject of hair and erotic intimacy. There was a whole section devoted to hearing the responses of Black women and men when confronted with the bedroom question: Can I run my fingers through your hair? It showed a depraved relation to our hair. In order to get and keep that salon fresh look, sleek and shiny, it must not be touched (by you and most especially your lover). Hair does not bring pleasure in the sense of us luxuriating in how it feels. How can you when it's not even yours? Weave. A woman tells the story of a young man with whom she was getting intimate with, and he wanted to run his fingers through her seemingly long shiny tresses. The moment was interrupted when he felt the hard tracks on her scalp before she could effectively slap his touch away. "You have to train these men early," another woman admonishes, "not to touch the hair." A man married for over 20 years complains of his wife's hair roller pins always poking him when she's "going down on him." He also hates, but has gotten used to, her wearing a head scarf anytime they make love. It is described in the book as Black folks having perpetual menege trios, he, she, and the head scarf. Another man wakes up to his girlfriend's "100% Korean Hair" all over the bed and floor after an especially heated night; he later ends up paying $200 dollars to have it all put back in again. The women speak of not even wanting to touch their own hair, refering to it being "hard as a rock" from gels and hair sprays. It's all in the name of a certain look, the processed one. (It's this look that lured their mates in the first place right?) It's sad that Black women talk about orchestrating certain sex positions around not messing up their fresh 'do. "You don't even think about it after while." They compensate not allowing their men to touch their hair with confidence and boldness in their performance, "It's so good he won't even be thinking about touching my hair."
I love this book. It isn't just politics or just us behind closed doors. Every possible reference to what is done to our hair is mentioned, even going bald. A Muslim woman opened my eyes to how not showing her hair takes away from having to compete for attentions based on beauty standards of hair, by being above them. It reminds us that as women, we shouldn't let physical beauty define us, even though most times it does, and we let it. "Ms. Strand" tells her tale with humor, cultural criticism, African storytelling, and 'round tha way truthfulness, barring nothing from the conversation. Truly, Tenderheaded should not be passed over.
DisappointingReview Date: 2005-01-05
I was also disappointed by the way the book was laid out. It seemed jumbled and poorly conceived. Photos, illustrations and cartoons/comics were seemingly thrown in randomly, with little context or relation to the surrounding content. The graphic content of the book was good, but the layout just did not display it to full advantage.
The idea behind this book was a good one, but the execution could have been a little bit better.

Sheila J. Rogers Has Opened Doors of HOPE!Review Date: 2007-06-27
As a concert-pianist, music therapist, author, and an individual living with Tourette Syndrome, I must "take my hat off" to Sheila Rogers for bringing together a cascade of knowledge by various doctors, pediatric neurologists,
authors and many other leading authorities. As there is no cure for Tourette Syndrome, parents, families and adults are desperately seeking out new innovations and ideas with the hope that somewhere a new approach/approaches will come to the forefront. This book offers exactly what so many have been looking for, thought provoking ideas without the side-effects of medication, approaches that
are natural and display underlying common sense!
Since reading the book, I have followed many of the innovative ideas and have found improvement in my own tics.
As a music therapist, which is also a natural, non side effect technique, I have incorporated the many findings in this book with my own student's!
BRAVO! SHEILA J. ROGERS!, what will you come up with next!

Due to the limited availability of many medicines to the average Joe (or Jane), I suppose the writer couldn't put in a lot of information on how to treat as a doctor would. But I was actually hoping for more of that kind of information.
Superb source for beyond first aidReview Date: 2008-02-03
Written by William Forgey, MD, former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society it goes beyond first aid, dealing with situations where you cannot merely administer initial care and then count on a rapid evacuation. Forgey writes with a light hand; he avoids jargon and has a dry sense of humor. For example (p. 157): "How do you calm a person who's just been bitten by a snake? Not surprisingly, just telling him to remain calm won't work."
There are seven chapters, beginning with assessment and stabilization, and going through body system disease symptoms, injuries, bites and stings, infectious diseases, and environmental injuries. There is an excellent appendix for putting together wilderness first aid/medical kits, both with prescription, and non-prescription meds, and with a bandaging module.
You don't have to be physician, nurse, or EMT to benefit from the book. All the information, is practical and hands-on; of value to the layperson who is interested in first aid and emergency medical situations. After an initial reading, Wilderness Medicine is a fine reference work.

Contest with NatureReview Date: 2008-01-07
Chapter One is about Assessment and starts with that key question: scene safe? Then Dr Forgey takes his reader through the ABCD's, vital signs, levels of consciousness, head to toe examination, shock, respiration rates, heart rates, and CPR. (The numbers for chest compressions and breaths has been changed by the AHA since Dr Forgey updated this book, but that is a minor issue.)
Chapter Two is about body system management. The focus of this chapter is on the systems in the head but the abdomen and reproductive system are given sections as well. There is also a very good, short section on poisoning from food poisoning to shellfish poisoning.
Chapter Three covers soft tissue wounds and treatments ... and suturing and stapling.
Chapter Four covers orthopedic injuries from head to foot.
Chapter Five covers bites and stings and anaphylactic shock. Interest-ingly Dr Forgey finds that rubber suction cups are as worthless as mouth suction. His lone endorsement is the Sawyer Extractor (which is available from Amazon.com).
Chapter Six is on infectious disease. Dr Forgey lists the most signif-icant *wilderness* diseases for North America and the world should one be contesting Nature abroad.
Chapter Seven's environmental injuries include hypothermia, heat stress, high altitude related illnesses, and ... being struck by lightning. Step current is caused when lightning hass struck and the current spreads out like a wave across the ground and the victim's feet are different distances from the strike point. Since the body has less resistance than the ground, a circuit is completed.
There are two useful appendices at the end of the book.
I am EMS certified and as a BLS instructor. I had a few quibbles with Dr Forgey such as his choice of prescription medications to list in one of the appendices. However I had no major disagreements and found the book to be more easily readable than any EMS book I have read. Lots of nuts and bolts and no fluff.
Also as I write this review, I am preparing a first aid segment for a TCLEOSE course on mantracking. Dr Forgey's book provided me with a lot of detail and anecdotes to include. However just as the title says this book is about wilderness medicine *beyond* first aid.

Tells it like it is...or could be!Review Date: 2003-09-18
If you are willing to read the book, then you are willing to do something about your health. It is a book for beginners, not for advanced lifters. The diet and exercise recommendations are beginner level, but there is a wealth of information, books and websites in the appendix that is worth the price of the book alone! And you can take the basic information and tailor it to your individual needs. Getting in shape isn't easy, but this book is a good starting point. After reading this, and doing a lot of highlighting, I'm inspired to jumpstart my fitness regime! Go for it!
Revival is Aptly NamedReview Date: 2002-07-18
Like the best coaches, Dave Draper enthusiastically conveys his subject matter to his needing charges, betraying the love he has for both. I don't say that lightly. Dave really wants to see hurting people change, and his instruments of change are as solid as a barbell plate. He doesn't just advocate a way of eating, he explores it for the reader's benefit. He doesn't just say that using weights to change one's body is the way to go, he tells you why. And, just as important, how.
Most of all, Draper's book is a call to a lifestyle, not just a change in one compartment of the reader's life. He's lived the values he promotes, and he demonstrates how adopting them as unchangeable, as part of your very foundation, brings you the kind of mastery over your life that results in joy.
Your Body Revival is aptly named, because the new person you are hoping to become isn't going to be handed to you. That new person is going to awaken -- inside you. Dave Draper knows it, because he's lived it. And now, he'll show you how it's done.
Buy this book.
Written by someone who knows about fat lossReview Date: 2003-05-28
Draper's program is no secret to those of us who were around in the 60's. It is a high protein and water diet; protein coming from tuna and other low fat, high protein sources.
The fact that it is low fat would make it more desireable than say the Atkins diet which is very popular and a high protein diet that is high in fat.
This program will trim you down and get you cut up like you wouldn't believe.
Isn't it interesting that the old methods are coming back and popular again?
High protein, low carbs. The weigh to go.
Just look what it did for Draper!
It Really Works Review Date: 2006-07-28
I generally like most of what Dave Draper writes and I do admire him. But this book had nothing to offer someone like me who knows most of what's to know about weight loss and bodybuilding. I did find the part where he puts little emphasis on aerobics of interest and do totally agree with that. Weights are far more important and should be given (excuse the pun) more weight.
His brief discussion on cholesterol was also of interest.
This book would be great for someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge of weight lifting and who really doesn't know how to lose weight.
But if you do have this knowledge, there's not much to recommend the book in my opinion.
Update:
August 18, 2006
Because the important thing about a book is not how it's written or what you think you take away from it when you finish the last word and put it down, but rather what it's teachings or suggestions accomplish in your life, I offer this update to my original review.
Since I wrote this review I've lost 5 of 10 pounds I need to lose by using the basic teachings in the book. I've done no aerobics or what one would call cardio. I lift for about 20 minutes three time a week. I do a split routine: Chest and Back on Monday, Arms and Shoulders on Wednesday and Legs and Abs on Friday.
I don't do everything exactly as instructed in the book. For example, I can only stand tuna from the can once a week at best. But I do fix things like tuna and salmon patties done in a bit of olive oil. I also use my George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine for my main meal, which is lunch. I even do some potatoes in olive oil on the grill. Dave Draper may not approve but it works for me and I've got to have a bit of food that appeals to me.
I also added 200 more calories to my daily diet that CalorieKing gives me. I wasn't losing when I cut too many calories. This is also in the book. Take it to heart.
By the way, a 20-minute weightlifting session burns around 200 calories. And the great thing is that it keeps burning for days! Even while you sleep. I can live with that.
I think each person has to adjust things to his or her own needs and likes. But I can attest that by following the basic tenets in this book you can lose weight at a pretty good clip. And you can do it without aerobics or running or all those things that are hard on knees, especially as we age. At the same time, you can give your cardiovascular system a workout by taking little or no rest between exercises and sets. Believe me on this one!
And you'll lose weight without a drastic cut in calories.
As a side note let me tell you what happened this morning. I woke up with one of my migraines. I just about had decided not to work out. But I figured it couldn't make me feel worse. So I did. Guess what? My headache was gone at the end of the workout! They usually last 4 days.
Now was that due to the workout? I don't know and I'm not trying to make a claim here. I'm just stating a fact. There may or may not be a correlation. But it makes me wonder.
Will keep you updated.

Fantastic book for those who dont like to exerciseReview Date: 2008-07-31
I was standing in front a shelf in a bookstore, looking for a book with simple exercises and out of the whole shelf of texts on "perfect body" routines, written only to those who go to the gym 3 times a day, this one (and only) book seemed to offer what I was looking for.
There are 4 sets of different routines that are each 15 minutes each. And they are JUST 15 minutes each. The exercises are very simple and clearly explained. The video is very well done. And best of all (to those who like me don't really like to exercise...) -- the routines don't have to be done every day, just every other day, 15 minutes, that's all you need to get yourself feeling good :)

If it were possible to give this book 20 stars, I would rate it at 20 stars.
Whether you're a man that's finding it hard to work through your grief, or if you're a female that's at a loss as to how to help the man you love as he grieves, this is THE book.
9 years ago, my brother in law was murdered by his own son. I watched my husband grieve for his brother with huge amounts of worry, thinking that he was stuffing his grief and anger, and simply not dealing with the whole issue. This book helped me to see that men grieve so differently at times than women do. So much so that after reading this book, I was much more at ease with how my husband, and my three boys were dealing with this huge, pain filled loss.
I cannot express how much this book not only helped my husband and boys to work through the grieving process, but how much it helped me to understand and recognize the differences in how men and women grieve.
After reading this book, I found that much of my fear and anxiety over whether or not my husband was actually dealing with his brother's death had disappeared.
I actually came to write this review because I needed to see if this book might be available here on Amazon, after hearing that my nephew is still having trouble with grief over the death of his father by his brother's hand. That shows how much of an impression this book made on me almost a decade ago.
This book is beyond invaluable to everyone out there that has suffered a loss. The best praise I can give this book is, "Buy it! You will not be disappointed!"
