"A Child Dies" - comments of a bereaved grandfather

This is an excellent book in a time of despair. I have also read "A Broken Heart Still Beats", finding that book valuable, but frankly - for our family, "A Child Dies" better filled our needs. This book uses art and poetry to help the reader connect with the timelessness and universality of grief. It is a briefer read than "A Broken Heart" and the chapters are segmented into topics such as: death of an infant, young child and older child. I found that the chapter written for specifically for caregivers useful.

The authors exude compassion, wisdom and experience. They gently confront the gruesome issues the parents of a lost child will likely encounter (martial problems, interaction with others, etc). My 9-month old grandaughter was killed the first day of the new millenia, by a drunk driver, as my daughter was walking her in her stroller. Needless to say, our families are shattered. My daughter and I found this book the best of several which we have read in these two hearbreaking weeks.

At the time of my first daughter's death in 1986, this was the *only* book I could find that was of any help to me. While other books at the time relied heavily on expressions of "faith" to guide and support bereaved parents, this exquisite book uses photographs of art and poetry from throughout history and cultures to illustrate and describe what a parent feels. It was so helpful to me to see that parents had always felt the same as I was feeling, and survived; and the book showed me this without relying on the organized religion that I felt so pressured to participate in by many well-meaning people but which honestly offered me no solace whatsoever. I found the book to be so validating of every feeling, every emotion, every terror that grief brought to me. The book was incredibly affirming to me and I appreciated the practical and honest approach it takes to supporting parents and advising their helpers.

This caring book will be of great comfort to those in need..

This highly acclaimed and consistently best-selling book was written to help grieving family members and concerned caregivers learn to cope with the death of a child. While there are no easy answers to how to deal with overwhelming loss of this sort, this book offers understanding and support with explicit guidelines and helping techniques. The text is fully illustrated with works of art and poems that are able to express in a powerful way what words sometimes cannot. This caring, warm and thoughtful book will be enormously helpful to all those who must confront the tragedy of a child's death, both victims and mental health professionals.

This is a spiral bound notebook consisting of 394 pages including an extensive glossary and index. There are roughly sixty pages of checklists that are perfect for photocopying and utilizing on a daily basis.

The formats for these charts are adapted from Children's Hospital Chronic Illness Program. Charts are organized with the student's name, person trained and position in the top left corner. The columns allow for six dates to be entered under the following headings, Name and Procedure, Preparation, Identifies Supplies and Procedure. Located within these sections are numbered specifics anywhere from five to twenty. Many of the lists are two pages with the final line for the parent or guardian to sign and date.

My main purpose in borrowing Children and Youth Assisted by Medical Technology in Education Settings: Guidelines for Care was to learn the correct terminology for the variations used in tube feeding along with the precautions and tools needed. There are diagrams that show the placements of the tubes as well as the pump, feeding bag, syringe and clamp.

Also listed are points to remember, observations and possible problems that require immediate attention and those that are non emergencies. There are step by step guides on how to change tubes, along with the clean up of the area and how to dispose of tools and waste. The pages with explanations have these listed in italic font.

The details and diagrams help to grasp the enormity of this decision while explaining how the education system handles students with special health care needs. This book is the manual to help prepare all those involved in the daily lives of the children and also adults who must utilize these pieces of equipment.

This book is a valuable resource not only for those health care professionals working in schools today, but also for special education teachers who work with children with medical needs in the schools. This boook is a must as more and more students with more involved special needs are being integrated into general education settings. I use this book as one of my texts in the graduate special education class I teach at the university and my students have remarked that it is a resource they will refer to often. The forms are valuable tools that can be used to address the needs of medically fragile children. I hope that the book is being considered for revision since it was first written in 1997.

As the parent of a child with a Traumatic Brain Injury, I have found this book to be invaluable. It has answered so many questions that were very difficult to find the answers to elsewhere. Dr. Schoenbrodt has done a magnificent job of pulling together information written by different professionals such as a medical doctor, a psychologist, special educators, etc. In this extremely informative book, Dr. Schoenbrodt presents ten different chapters: 1)What is Traumatic Brain Injury?; 2)Rehabilitation and Medical Concerns; 3)Coping as a Family; 4)Helping Your Child Adjust; 5)How TBI Affects Learning and Thinking; 6)How TBI Affects Speech and Language; 7)How TBI Affects Behavior; 8)Strategies for Managing Your Child's Behavior; 9)The Educational Needs of Children with TBI; 10) Legal Issues for Families of Children with TBI. There is also a wonderful resource guide which includes a state-by-state listing of organizations for families that have experienced TBI and a list of informative websites. The material provided is given in a clear, concise, and well-written manner. There are many medical terms used but there is also a glossary explaining them. It is not too difficult for the lay person to read, and yet has much to offer the professional. This book has been more help to me than I can ever express. I live in a very rural area and no one seemed to have much information on TBI. As I read the book, every so often I would come across something and say to myself, "Aha! So that's why my son does this or acts this way." There are also many suggestions to help parents and the child recover emotionally and to manage everyday living. I would highly recommend this book to any member of a family that has suffered TBI, and I would also recommend it to any professional seeking more information on the subject. Thank you, Dr. Schoenbrodt!

As a parent of a son with TBI, I have battled schools to find a teacher, administrator, specialist... anyone who understands the confusion and disorganisation in my son's brain. This book, among other things, clearly states the stages of brain rehabilitation, lists possible symptoms, explains in layman's terms how things can appear one way one day, and differently the next. I can speak intelligently to untrained educators using quotes from this book to explain abberrant and unexpected behavior as exhibited by my son. And believe me, the teachers are UNTRAINED in TBI. Ask me, I am a teacher! Everything I have learned about TBI, I taught myself after my son fell and damaged his brain - and this book is the best place to start that I can recommend.

This book was very helpful in my understanding of childhood asthma. I know this is an increasing problem in the last few years, and this is a great resource. I especially liked the section on asthma myths - so many of those have been spread around causing misinformation and misunderstanding. I would highly recommend this to parents of children with asthma, and for healthcare professionals that care for these children. Bravo!

The Cantrell family has a colorful legacy. Daniel Cantrell was a hard man. His life and love was in his groves. His family was merely seen as individuals who could work the land or take care of his house. In all Dan had ten children and three wives. His first wife died in childbirth, his second left him after years of horrible abuse, and the third got her revenge. The children, grandchildren, and extended family of Daniel Cantrell lived very interesting lives. Some followed almost directly in the footsteps of Dan while others spent their lives trying to live his legacy down.

For me, The Citrus Baron was one of those guilty pleasures. The book read like a soap opera and I quickly found myself immersed in the drama of the Cantrell clan. The story has a lot of characters, each with their own well developed story that relates to the main action. Normally, I have problems keeping individual's straight when the storyline involves so many characters. However, that never seemed to be an issue with The Citrus Baron. I think that each person's story was so interesting in and of itself that I took in the information without any problems. I think that each situation also related extremely well back to Dan Cantrell. I could see how the actions and interactions rippled through each life and each generation.

Pick up this book, find a nice quiet spot, and get lost in the lives, loves, and losses of the Cantrell family.

The Citrus Baron chronicles the lives of a Florida family through several generations. Their trials, sins, hopes, and loves are told in such a way that the reader feels an identity with the people, as if they were kin. Kingsley intwines the characters like the threads of a blanket. The whole, when finished, gives us warmth, a comfortable feeling that despite life's ups and downs, families prevail.

Carolyn kingsley, a resident of Edgewater who grew up in Titusville, has written a book called 'The citrus Baron.'
I've read an excerpt from the book and wanted to read more. It begins in the early 1900s and goes to the space age.
The book's main character is Hoyt Cantrell, one of 10 children whose father has "the finest groves in the central area of the state," said Kingsley, who is a feature writer for publications in Florida and South Carolina.
The book, published by Xlibris Corporation, follows the joys and tragedies of a couple of central characters from different generations of the family, as they fall in and out of love, but always find happiness in their Central Florida roots.

I can't begin to express the enjoyment I and my daughter had of this book. We still refer back to it seven months after we read it. This book shows the value of giving your children a true WORLD of experiences. It was very hard to put down and we faced a range of laughter, suspense, sadness, reflection and happiness. My daughter and I read the book one month before a three week family trip to Brazil (including the Amazon Jungle and indigenous/African cultural sites). It was a perfect read from the child travelers point of view and even more perfect was the importance of being open to learning about other people's cultures and experiences. No travel guidebook could have been as exciting and fun as this book for my child. If you can't fly to some distant place, pick up this book with your child and have an adventure. I recommend it for children 8 years and older.

"Close Encounters of a Third World Kind" lives up to its title. Twelve year old Annie is off on the adventure of her life, as she treks to Nepal with her family (Mom, Doctor Dad, and little sister) to provide health care in a rural village. This is definitely an out of the mainstream book with its exotic and unusual setting. Author Jennifer J. Stewart's trademark humor is always there, as well as a certain ick factor in common medical complaints, but this is much more than a lighthearted tale. The friendship Annie develops with a younger Nepal girl is genuine. Highly recommended.

Idiot's Guide to Looking Great for Teens is an invaluable book that's filled to the top with useful information about nutrition, eating a healthy and balanced diet, what vitamins and minerals are good for you and in which foods they are mostly found, fitness, gyms, home gyms, playing on a sports team, dealing with zits, horomones, stress, image, keeping your skin and hair healthy, etc-- it's basically a detailed and extremely informative guide to staying healthy and fit during your teen years. It's fun to read and the author uses an engaging, "you can do it" tone, and if you're interested in learning more about staying healthy and fit, it never gets boring. As a 13 year old, I love this book and think it's absolutely fantastic. It's hard to find information that's this detailed in any magazine, and it's by far one of the most informative books I've ever read. It's definately a great book for teens, and I highly recommend it.

As a Director of Human Resources in the not-for-profit sector, I would recommend CRISIS for every parent, educator, employer and worker in the human services profession.

It is our responsibility to learn and do more to teach one another and educate our next generation about the vocabulary of diversity, respect and inclusion. Our goal is to eliminate future shameful examples of discrimination, harassment and bias. As a friend says - "CEO means, 'Chief Example Officer'." An interesting and important concept.

Are you able to examine your organizations "best practices" and say out loud, "I have no shame"?

A well-informed commitment to change the barriers (or differences) which exist for our LGBT citizens is needed to end this prejudice worldwide.

This change is woefully overdue.

Put down the notion you cannot influence significant change, and pick up a few copies of CRISIS to share.

Gold, Mitchell, editor with Mandy Drucker. "Crisis: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing Up Gay in America", Greenleaf Book Group, 2008.

Raising the Curtain on Growing Up Gay

Amos Lassen

This is the book that many have waited for because we are in desperate need of ways to save our gay teens who suffer from depression, rejection, isolation, persecution and just plain fear. They often have nowhere to turn and no one to talk to. A large percentage of them turn to drugs and alcohol and some lean toward suicide. We know the causes---discrimination, bullying and homophobia (from their families and their peers) and these kids (as well as many adults) suffer great pain. We need to find ways t give them the love and support that they need.
"Crisis" was written as an effort to help and is directed at those who cause harm to our youth and is a wonderful aid for clergy, parents and teachers and counselors who have no idea to deal with the issues. Forty diverse stories gave us a background. We learn the problems that many had accepting themselves and we have looks at what parents and straight clergy have to say by offering support and looking at gay people for what they are--human beings who are guaranteed equal rights but may not get them because they are guilty of loving people of the same sex as they are.
As people it is our responsibility to learn about gay people, teach one another what we know and make sure that the next generation understands the meaning of diversity and difference in order that the future generations will not have to face the problems that others have felt. If we commit ourselves to changing the way things are, it is our duty to rid the world of prejudice.
It's a pity that we have not always has this book because if we had, many would have understood the pain that is felt by our GLBT youth. We know that many feel that they are not worthy of our love because they are afraid of rejection. They want to be able to hold jobs, to love, to practice their faith. We need to give them the love they need as parents and allies so that they can feel complete and not alone. This book is a way to start. Some of the stories will break your heart and others will shine a light on you. If you are interested in saving children and if you buy no other book this year, this is the one that should be in your personal library.
