Substance Abuse Disorders, or addictions, have been thought to be the exclusive province of drugs of abuse, like cocaine or heroin. More recently, food has been considered a substance of abuse, with morbid obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other consequences the result of a pathological attachment to food. What we eat causes profound changes in the brain. This book by Dr. Cocores is an easy-to-use guide to recovery from the disease of obesity - a brain disease that causes shame and guilt and results in secondary diseases of the body and spirit of the patient.

I met John Croyle a few years ago at a fundraiser for Big Oak Ranches put on by country music legends Alabama (done every year as part of their Fan Apprecation celebration). He was extremely cordial and very sincere about his life's work. In the few minutes we chatted my impression was that 'this guy knows what he is doing, and he knows he's doing the right thing'. This book very concisely expresses his values and opinions as well as genuine love and concern for all children.

My kids are grown and gone, now parents themselves. They were raised with similar values and responsibilites with very good results. I'll be passing John's book on to them.

This should be every parent's textbook

Over their 25 years of raising disadvantaged and abused children John and his wife Tee have changed the lives of many children in a positive way. This book will give you the gameplan you need to raise your children to be Winners. This should be mandatory reading for every prospective parent.

I didn't know what to expect from the book. Once I started to read it I was amazed how much I had to learn. I always felt I was making the right choices in situations where my children were concerned. This book helped me realize many of my decisions were right but there was so much room for improvement. I just started a new career in teaching. I am in a classroom with severely emotionlly disturbed children. The section of the book about boundries and how important they are holds great meaning for me. These children want someone to care enough about them to make those hard disciplinary decisions. It takes time, patients, love, and the will to want to help create a caring, responsible human being. This is too often more than most parents feel they can give. This book could put them in the right direction. I hope parents in need will read!

This book is great for getting you started. Callanetics is a great program, but the one-hour program is a bit much for one starting out. I used this book to design a shorter program to be done daily--easier than blocking out one hour twice a week.

The book starts with modified versions of the exercises, using common furniture, and by the end of the month you should be able to keep up with a regular class.

Exercises that REALLY work

Callanetics is the best exercise program I've ever used. It works so quickly -- in a matter of hours as opposed to weeks or months as with conventional programs. The stress on the body is minimal and gets even less as your muscles become stronger. It combines the slow, graceful movements of ballet with very, very deep muscle movements that give astonishing results. It's a superb program!

Quick Results!!!!

I recently rediscovered this book because I wanted to change up my exercise routine up a bit. I've owned this book for about 12 years and I remembered how effective it was in such a short period of time. I guarantee you will see results. This time around I have more discipline in sticking to a exercise regime, so I decided to give it a go. I like that the book is divided into 3 phases and within those phases the exercises are divided by sections of the body. There are pictures to help you follow and detailed instruction on how to perform the exercise, and amount of repetitions on a particular day. I've have been using it for about a week and I already feel a difference. I could only imagine what the results will be after 30 days...I can't wait.

Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish, like all of his Amelia Bedelia books, is hysterically funny. Parish's use of expressions confuse Mr. Rogers' maid, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the entire story. Poor, silly, Amelia Bedelia never realizes how confused she really is. She takes everything anyone says literally, so when her boss Mr. Rogers says "jump in the car", she thinks that he actually means to sit in the car and jump.
In this story, Amelia Bedelia goes to the doctor. However, when she gets there the nurse asks for Amelia Bedelia's help with the patients. A woman who calls the doctor's office to complain that she has "caught a bug" is told to "let it go" by Amelia Bedelia. She proceeds to tell a woman who has hives to bring some honey to the doctor's office. She looks at a bank's clock to take a patient's temperature and she tells a boy to draw his own blood onto a piece of blank paper. A boy says that he is at the office for a test and Amelia Bedelia tells him that he must go to school.
No matter what Amelia Bedelia did for most of the book, she is a hit when she "treats" the patients to ice cream! This is not exactly what the nurse had in mind when she said to treat the patients, however, Amelia Bedelia comes out looking like a hero!
Amelia Bedelia is entertaining to the adults who read this story to children because we have an even better sense of Amelia Bedelia's silliness. I love reading this story to my second graders and they love hearing it!

My son, who is proud of being a couch potato, actually read the book from cover to cover and even did the puzzles. Last Saturday, he and a bunch of friends played capture the flag for four hours.

Captain Fit is the coolest superhero going. I hope there are more books on the way. Oh, and don't forget to sign your child up as a Fitness Ranger. My son actually wants to try out for sports in school!!

This book in superb. Having an ailing parent, I turned to this book for the helpful tips discussed on the jacket cover. But it was so much more than that....it made me feel understood. The plain-speak and thoughtfulness in the text made the goal of caregiving seem much more attainable....and less overwhelming. The stories and examples of others in a caregiving capacity helped me to feel not alone. I strongly recommend this book, whether you yourself are a caregiver or not, it is a must read book of the year.

My mother went through so many of the things this doctor describes. It still makes me very sad to think about what happened to her. This is a very difficult situation to face and Dr. Scileppi gives really helpful, sane, HONEST, thoughts and advice. A no-nonsense guide to dealing with something no one wants to face. I had to deal with this all by myself (I am an only child with a single parent) and I can tell you it is pure, unadulterated stress. This book didn't come out till my mother had already died, but when I read it I saw everything I had to deal with right there in print.

My mother is old. Like, really really old. I mean, I'm old but come ON! Point is, she's senile and no fun, really. So when I found Dr. S.'s book, I was elated. He had all sorts of advice like how to hide pills in her food and what kind of entertainment the elderly like (bright colors, soft music, long stories). Sooner or later you're gonna get old too, so it's a good thing we've got enormous geniuses like the blessed Dr. Scileppi around to help us out. His wife must be very lucky-- she'll have a great caretaker when she reaches old age.

A most helpful book, filled with wisdom, insight, pratical advice, places to turn for concrete help. So glad I stumbled upon it and now telling all my friends who are going through it to read this. I just did not want to be my mother's mother, no, not going to go there, ran away from it for years, until I finally had to face it, and now that I have accepted it and learned what to do becuase of this book, I am so furious at myself for running away for so long. With knowledge comes coping skills, and this book will give you that and more. The other great book that will help you cope is "Elder Rage".

This book is an excellent reference for adults with older parents
progressively requiring more care from their children and other
care-providers. Generally, the family provides up to 80% of care
for the elderly. In my experience, this is true due to the high
cost of nursing facilities and the personalized care many older
people prefer. The authors mention that advocacy for the elderly
requires strong organizational skills. This is the understatement
of the year. Keep medical records, descriptions of key health
issues, physician rosters and any materials which will assist
you in determining what level of care parents require.
Most states allow physicians and providers to discard records
after 6 or more years. With this data in hand, create a home
medical tracking system for physicians, medications, physical
therapy regimentation, diet etc.

The book lists some classic sayings by noted personalities. i.e.

- "Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born
at 80 and gradually age to 18. " Mark Twain

- "Raise children for old age as you store grain against famine."
Chinese Proverb

This book would be invaluable to children of old age parents
about to take on the role of caregiver or partial caregiver.
It lists some classic considerations many of us overlook in the
painful yet rewarding process of caring for elderly parents in
the twilight of life.

Protecting your children from the many perils lurking in today's world is bound to be one of your top priorities.
But some of the most insidious threats to their well-being are those you can't see and may not even be aware of -- and that your kids are quite apt to be regularly exposed to at home, at play and at school.

Chemical-Free Kids is your guide to the whereabouts of these invisible dangers -- the toxic substances that permeate our food and environment -- as well as to strategies that can enable you to keep them from doing irreparable harm to your family.

In this highly informative yet reader-friendly book, you'll learn the identity and characteristics of the chemical culprits hiding in processed and conventionally-grown food, either in the form of poisonous residues left over from pesticide applications or as additives intended to preserve it or disguise its flavor and appearance. You'll also be given an overview of the health hazards to your children posed by all manner of household and garden products, from air fresheners to lawn sprays. You'll find out why government watchdogs have been so lax about regulating or banning these hazardous substances and what steps you can take to gradually eliminate them from your family's environment.

This book will also provide you with highly workable plans for introducing your kids to a healthier lifestyle, for making your child's school safe from toxic sprays, and for weaning your kids off junk food and winning them over to nutritious, unadulterated meals and snacks. It even offers dozens of recipes to help you detoxify your family's diet -- including some especially geared to kids with allergies to certain kinds of foods.

The wealth of essential information and advice you'll gain from reading "Chemical-Free Kids" includes:

* How you can phase out products that contain harmful additives and replace them with healthier ones -- including the ten best foods for children -- without disrupting your lifestyle.
* How detoxifying your child's diet can prevent or limit food allergies and sensitivities.
* Why artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame) should be avoided.
* How you can give your baby a priceless gift by limiting your exposure to toxic substances during pregnancy.
Non-toxic pest-control techniques, and other easy and convenient methods for maintaining a chemical-free home environment.
* How to avoid the life-threatening hazard posed by a deadly nerve gas in widespread domestic use as a "fumigant."
* The various reasons that organically grown foods are so important to your family's health.
* The twin menaces of lead and mercury exposure -- and how you can keep these extremely toxic and nerve-damaging heavy metals from harming your child's development.

Great advice, easy to understand

Of all the books I have seen on this topic, this is the most practical and easy to understand. While the focus is on kids, the information can be most helpful for parents who want to reduce toxins in their diet and environment as well. This book does not use scare tactics in presenting information, but just tells it like it is with a lot of references. The part on heavy metals and vacinations was most valuable to me right now (which is why I got the book), but I have learned more about fake colors and other additives from this book than from all the magazine stories and newspaper articles combined.
An excellent choice for anyone who really wants to learn about pesticides, food additives and related issues. The only thing I would have really liked is if the book were spiral bound (which would help with the recipes), but mostly because I use it for reference (for example, ways to make less toxic cleaning agents) and a spiral bound copy would be much easier.

an interesting & easy read

Every parent should be aware of the issues addressed in this book! This is not a new age earth mama read. This is for any adult that cares about children.

I knew enough to stop cleaning with chlorine bleach, comet & ammonia years ago [use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide to disinfect, baking soda to scrub - it's also less expensive] & every parent knows not to allow their kids around pesticides but this book actually explains the consequences. The info on food coloring alone is worth the price of the book! Great basic reminders like `read food labels' to avoid fructose corn syrup & other additives. Our local doctors confirmed the information about avoiding chemicals vs the biological elements in reference to allergies.

This book not only tells you what to avoid - it also describes practical alternatives.

It is an interesting easy read, broken down into sensible sections [making it good for a parent with short spans of reading time], and has great references. You don't have to have kids to appreciate this information & it should be required reading for all school board members [it's not only about food but chemicals in fabrics, bldg. materials, etc.].

If you are reading this review you are obviously interested in the health of your children - this book is defintely one you will want to read.
