While the stories in this book may appear wordy or (dare I say it) even dreadful at first, as you read them more and more (and I garuntee you will) they will grow on you as they did on me and my toddler!

This collection of stories has a central group of characters, which even the youngest of children can seem to become invovled with. The stories include plot lines that invovle lessons like teamwork, commradery, honesty, modesty and being humble. The stories are fun and have action (which is more then I can say for some of the Thomas books).
It's really wonderful to see my two year old acting out "Thomas Goes Fishing" with his toy trains or the day I realized he had "Terence the Tractor" memorized. This book has really reached my child!

Okay, Ringo Starr is not the best narrator, and the pictures are a bit fuzzy and not all that great having been taken from the TV series video tape and enlarged past what their quality would support; and Thomas (on the cover) does look like his going to `hurl', but little people just don't seem to care and so we give this book and cassette, Four Stars.

There are 4 stories in this collection:

Trouble for Thomas
Thomas Saves the Day
Thomas Goes Fishing
Terence the Tractor

For those of you who can't remember the plot lines I have summarized them below.

In `Trouble for Thomas', kind Edward trades jobs with Thomas so that our favorite Steamie is off to end his boredom by pushing freight cars instead of coaches. The cars get the better of him though because he hasn't listened to Edwards advice. (A frequent Thomas problem.)

In `Thomas Saves the Day' it is poor James' turn to get into trouble with those troublesome trucks. They force him to go off the line. (Wooden brakes, you know). Thomas saves the day by quickly getting the break-down train to the scene, where fortunately James is embarrassed, but unhurt. At the end of this story, James gets new brakes, and Thomas gets his own branch line and Annie and Clarabel.

In `Thomas Goes Fishing', we find out that Thomas loves to stop and watch the river, unfortunately fate and his driver seldom allow him to do so. When he meets the other engines he repeats his dissatisfaction and says, "I want to fish." But they would all say the same thing in reply: "Engines don't go fishing."

Trouble comes when Thomas stops at the river station for water and the pump is out of order. His driver and fireman use a bucket to top him off, but unbeknownst to them, they have put fish in Thomas' boiler. Steamie chaos (and a bit of a stink) ensues.

In `Terence the Tractor', Thomas gets himself into trouble when he bangs up his much hated snowplow so that he actually can't wear it. And when a heavy snow falls, he gets stuck. Terence comes to the rescue and Thomas finds out that `caterpillar treads' are good things indeed.

Four Stars. My son plays this tape over and over and over, all of its faults forgiven.

Makes air travel great!

My son loves Thomas the Tank Engine and this book, with the cassette, helps him with his pronunciation of the words that he is having trouble saying. I wish that there were more then 4 books on tape with Thomas.

Evan Cooper's "Um, like...OM, A Girl Goddess's Guide to Yoga" is a breezy read which accomplishes what all good teachers do best: Imparting with vivid good humor the wisdoms of processes taken beyond the classroom. The target audience here, primarily middle-school girls, calls for a most delicate balancing act: Being bright, fun, and "cool" while explaining the theory, practice, and results of a disciplined approach to yoga. Ms. Cooper accomplishes this masterfully with anecdotes, explanations, and her "girl friend" persona.

Scan the table of contents alone and, guaranteed: You're hooked: weight, sex, drugs, peers, parents, and so much else. Add Stacy Peterson's fun, carefully-scripted (by position and motion) illustrations of the exercises, and this fun profound little book will delight and please any "tweener-to-teen." And her mom, who might recover her own "pocket devi" in the process!

Surprisingly serious and useful

A disclaimer: I am a yoga instructor in my mid-thirties. Clearly, I am not this author's target demographic. I took that into account when I first picked it up. Even with that caveat, I initially found the tone so off the cuff and the postures so disorganized that I put it down and walked away.

A few years later, after I'd incorporated much more Kundalini into my own practice, I found myself drawn to this book again. This time, much more of what she was offering for asanas/kriyas made sense to me, as well as many of the meditations. That she doesn't include a lot of different movements in each section also made more sense- often times with kundalini you may find that you get more bang for your buck from fewer movements.

I liked that she not only tackled serious issues- family pressure, drug use, body image, school stress and romance- but that she also had her own contributions to make about how those issues affected her. Her light, breezy style belied the seriousness of both her own and her students' and how yoga helped address- if not cure- all of them.

Like many authors for the younger set, her aim was off- I felt like she was reaching for the older teen, but instead landed on the twelve to fifteen year olds, if not younger. That's probably just as much her style as it is the increasingly jaded affect of all age groups, but it's something to keep in mind.

I'd love to see more from this author- I think she has a lot to offer not only this age group but adults as well.

Can't live without it

When you think about someone being diagnosed with depression, teenagers might not come first to mind. But teenagers are not exempt from things that can make adults experience an extreme feeling of being overwhelmed and saddened. They are just as vulnerable as adults when it comes to having fights and disagreements with friends or family, and problems at school could intensify their negative emotions. With all the problems teenagers encounter these days, how can you determine whether a teenager's depression is serious enough to warrant treatment?

The book "Understanding Teenage Depression: A Guide to Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management," addresses this information. Readers will become more familiar with depression -- how common it actually is; who is likely to be at risk; how to determine if a teenager is depressed; and what treatments are available. Other important information in the book discusses life events that could lead to teenage depression; various therapies; and other disorders that may afflict teenagers.

My ParenTime recommends the book, "Understanding Teenage Depression" by Maureen Empfield, M.D., and Nicholas Bakalar -- it is well-organized, eye-opening, and informs readers about a problem that is much more common today than parents realize.

As a teen with depression I read a lot of book on the topic. THIS IS THE BEST ONE! I was diagnosed with a certin depression, that is hard to find information on -double depression. This book explains all about the differnt kinds of depression, also differtent methods to help feel better. I liked and related so much I would leave the book out with a note teeling my parents or friends to read parts. This book explains all parts if depression, and makes it a good read for a teenager that is depressed, or for some one that knows a teen.

If you are or a loved one is suffering from depression, you should read this book.

Most of the articles I read on vaccination are very emotional - they are either pro or against it. They make the decision making process of a new parent even harder. This book has a reasoned, less combative tone. It presents opinions as well as information from both side of the debate. I found it educational and helpful.

My wife and I have a 14 day old daughter(an absolute angel!!)and we are interested in vaccination issues so we ordered this book. We were really enjoying it until we got toward the back of it and noticed that 20 pages are upside down and that those upside down pages are THE same 20 pages that precede the upside down section!! Hope that wasn't too confusing?! In other words, we not only have upside down pages but we are missing 20 pages!! This is a MAJOR error from either the publisher or the printer. So, we will have to hold off final judgement of this book until amazon ships us a new copy that actually has the missing 20 pages in it!

I recommend this book to every parent and parent to be as well as health care professionals, especially pediatricians. It is an eye opener about the issue of vaccinations. The presentation of the issue is very well rounded. It provides sections on:

1. the childhood diseases against which the routine vaccinations are given 2. the opinions of the health care professionals on the vaccinations themselves 3. the experiences of parents with vaccinations 4. guidelines on how to gather information about vaccination exemptions and alternative "treatments".

I strongly recommend it. All parents owe to get informed about vaccinations. God the Almighty entrusted our children to us and we need to care for them with knowledge, and pray for the best.

I discovered The Walking Deck at a time I decided to commit to walking a half marathon. The Walking Deck has been tremendously helpful in my training journey. I love the fact that I can pull out separate cards and easily read them while doing a stretch or exercise (as opposed to trying to crane your neck to see pictures in a book that won't quite stay open). I like the author's practical, straightforward style. Even though her tips were based on research, she wrote them in an easy-to-understand manner. Her suggestions for different types of walks like interval and distance walks and the specialty walks like meditation and breath-awareness walks were very interesting and applicable to my life. (I always appreciate any practical tips for stress release!) The variety of suggestions ensure that the deck will be suitable for any level of walker, no matter what type of climate you live in. I'd highly suggest this product for newbie or experienced walkers.

The idea that there is a physical component to every psychological problem has always intigued me, and I had previously read a number of Alexander Lowen's books, and found them fascinating. Recently, I became very depressed over something in my life, a failure on my part to achieve something which on the surface level I could say to myself it's understandable, but beneath the surface I was judging myself very harshly. I went into therapy and also bought a number of self help / psychology books, nothing seemed to help much. I was having some pretty extreme physical tensions, and I remembered about Lowen and Bioenergetics. So I got this book, and what I can say is that doing some of the exercises in the book, in particular some of the exercises dealing with expressing anger, helped considerably. And it helped where the normal self help books did nothing. If you are having difficulty in your life and you find yourself interested in this approach, I recommend this book. It certainly won't cost you much and you might be surprised at it's impact.

This book is amazing. I've read Ryan's book as well, and that book is an amazing story of courage and determination. Ryan was an amazing human being and lived a wonderful life in the short time he had here, and was a much better person than most people can hope to be. He was so selfless in all that he did, and it shows by how he helped to shed light on AIDS when it was kept in the shadows by the public.

Jeanne's book shows her love for Ryan, and her determination to continue Ryan's legacy by educating people all over about AIDS. It is emotional and deeply personal, but is wonderfully honest and one of the best books I've ever read.

I definitely recommend it.

God Bless Jeanne White for writing this book! If you have *never* lost a loved one to AIDS, this is *still* a must read! Ms. White writes not only of living with and dying of AIDS. She writes of the loss of a child, the loss of a loved one, and all the emotions that come forth from this -- faith, fear, anger, confusion, hope, sorrow... this book is a true human experience. If you have lost someone close to you, you must read this book. Jeanne's book brought me tears and smiles... and comfort... and hope. Jeanne, thank you for sharing Ryan's story, but more importantly, thank you for sharing your own story. It is the caregiver who is often the most devastaed after a loss. Thank you for allowing others to experience what we go through

When I was pregnant with my first child (25 years ago!) I read a gazillion books about all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. This book would be at the top of the list. The information about diet and nutrition for pregnant women (particularly in the prevention of toxemia) was easy to understand and backed by solid research/clinical observations. Assuming this edition is similar to the one I read, it also included a thorough list of the nutritional content of common foods.

Highly recommended!
