I feel compelled to say something about this little book because it sort of got to me- in a good way. From a parents perspective it's about a kid who makes a mess in the bathroom...but the way it is written you are really able to see the world through this child's eyes. I don't know if the author meant to make me pause as a parent- and promise myself I would try to remember what it felt like to be a kid, but that was the end result. I guess that is what great children's literature does, though, it takes you some place special- and usually there is a surprise involved. At any rate I was surprised to be so touched by a picture book. I think my kids just thought it was fun.

Wonderful Addition to Children's Literature!

This is a delightful and beautifully illustrated book. The story is imaginative and very appealing to young children. I rank it up there with my favorite Maurice Sendak book "Where the Wild Things Are." This is sure to become a children's classic.

This is a fantastic addition to a library of children's books! It is a fantastic adventure that you and your child can enjoy together (even my jaded 20-something brother liked it!)

You will NOT regret buying this one and it will provide years of enjoyable bedtime stories and keep your child entertained while learning to read!

I just got this book today for my son's 5th birthday. He hasn't read it yet, but I have and love it. He is very into pretend play and likes to dress up and be different characters. He's just like Gulliver! The rhymes make this book fun for an adult to read (it's sad that I almost fall asleep trying to read boring bed time stories) and the pictures are really amazing. I can't wait for him to open it. He loves to read and I know this will be a new favorite.

My four year old daugter thoroughly enjoyed this book, and asked to have it read again and again. She suggested we take it with us to the beach. She's never had clams before, and now she wants to try them!

Beautifully illustrated story of a family beach vacation written as a childhood memory. The beach house is filled with family (siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and, of course, Grandpa)and every day Grandpa wakes the kids to join him clamming at low tide. After several outings without much success, a bumper crop of clams is gathered that becomes a part of family celebrations for the rest of the year and family history forever. The next best thing to a trip to the beach.

A Look At A Road I Might Have Traveled

Reading Victoria Greenleaf's book is a fascinating and eye-opening experience. It is as compelling as a well-written novel, yet it has the added value of being true, provoking readers to ask themselves difficult questions about loopholes in socialization our culture has left open, and where the responsibility lies for those who, through cunning and guile, craft a life within them only to eventually become everyone's unackowledged problem. Dr. Greenleaf paints a comprehensive picture in which the social mechanisms we have created to deal with this problem are woefully inadequate. The agencies are understaffed, underfinanced, and undervalued. Because of the prevalence of this character disorder, we are losing a significant portion of the best of what we have. Her character, Daniel, eventually becomes a moderately productive member of society, but contributes perhaps only a fraction of what he might have. The part he will never manifest is a devastating shortfall, especially when one considers how prevalent this condition is. Greenleaf makes the point well that as a society we can not afford to continue ignoring this problem. We are losing too much of our most vital resource at a time when it is sorely needed: the full commitment to our mutual problems by not only the best and the brightest but by every member of our community. This book gives us an Erin Brockovich heroine who stands up for saving our children by taking on every possible task to try to correct her son's personality flaw. It is an honest statement in which she willingly opens herself to possible criticism by telling her story the way it actually happened. It took years of her time to put this together, a task she performed because she felt this is a story that should be told. She deserves more than our gratitude; she deserves to see a general awakening to the extent of this problem and an increased resolve to do something about it. This is a brave, compelling, and much needed book.

In A Handful Of Ashes: One Mother's Tragedy, psychiatrists Victoria Greenleaf maintains that children can be born with negative personality traits that even the most exemplary upbringing will be unable to overcome. Dr. Greenleaf makes a convincing case that childhood personality disorder do not necessarily stem from flawed parenting or parental abuse. She asserts that genetics may be equally influential and supports her remarkable assertion with a personal account of the agonizing impact a child with Antisocial Personality Disorder can having on loving parents who, despite professional expertise and tireless efforts, were unable to reverse their son's condition. A Handful Of Ashes is highly recommended reading for child psychologists, family counselors, and parents who are trying their best to effectively and lovingly nurture an antisocial child.

This book is very well-written, a brutally honest account of the author's struggles with her wayward son. However, all through the book, one vacillates between having sympathy for the author, and being enraged with her for her arrogance, and bewildermment for having such a son. She seems to be totally naive to the fact that even "good" parents can raise "bad" children, and her methods for trying to "help" him are questionable at best. She seems to be unable to show motherly love to her children, and instead appears to raise them as a scientist conducting an experimment. Additionally, after reading the book, the reader is left with more questions than answers. For instance, what has become of her 2 younger children? How old is "Daniel" now, and what is he doing? And why, in God's name, hasn't she divorced "Peter?"

Nature Over Nurture

I first interviewed Dr. Greenleaf when reporting an article for Time Magazine on Anti-Social Personalities (a.k.a. sociopaths or psychopaths), so it was with great interest that I read this book about her struggles with her sociopathic son, Daniel. This is an engaging, well-written, gut-honest narrative that is a must read for any parent with a baffling "black sheep" child or anyone who wants to be able to identify and avoid the sociopaths among us. The book also shatters the long-held assumption that bad kids are the by-product of bad parenting. Daniel, like so many destructive people who are without conscience, seems to have been born bad.

This book was exactly what I needed I'm an at home mom of a 1& 3 year old and have been trying for 3 years to keep my life balanced on a regular basis but only have done that in waves. Until now. Since I quit my job as a 2nd grade teacher to become a full time homemaker, I've never been so driven and motivated. I'm better in so many areas and I'm only at week four in the book. I spend 1/2 hour every day doing the exercises and taking notes. I love that time I spend.I can't wait to get up and read the next day. I recommend it to every mom I know because it has helped my life so much. Hannah is funny and organized the book so well. I love the sequence of chapters, exercises, reminders, and her writing style. It's very easy to read. I want to tell more...but my baby needs me. Any mom could use the information found in this book!WOW! When I first received this book, I read the book quickly without taking the time to get a notebook and complete the daily exercises. When I finished the book, I grabbed a notebook and started back through each chapter. Hannah's advice hit right on target in many areas of my life. Hannah understands the chaos and emotions involved with motherhood. She offers avenues for mothers to take back control of their life. In a world where everyone is selling external fixes to problems, it's nice to read a book that focuses on the internal you.

This is a wonderful book for toddlers and one that I don't mind reading over and over to my daughter. It is a very funny book for potty training about a young girl whose potty is stolen by the farm animals who think its the greatest thing ever. My daughter's favorite page reads, "What an amazing invention, what a wonderful device, but a little privacy would be nice." My daughter subsequently insists on privacy when she has to make a poo - something I don't mind at all!

I literally just completed an inpatient treatment program provided by the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. They were very helpful in reducing the severity of my 21+ year daily chronic headache/migraine. This clinic was founded by Dr. Seymour Diamond. My son also suffers from bad migraines. Most neurologists have been hesitant to treat him because if his age. The Diamond Headache Clinic work with children without hesitation. The doctors here and this book have a wealth of information. I am anxious to apply some of the things I learned there, such as biofeedback and low tyramine diet, with my son.

Dr, Diamond has put together a book full good information relating to childhood headaches. It seems the book is targeted at other Doctors as much as it is for parents. Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use. Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. Both books were helpfull

Headache and Your Child is "just what the doctor ordered." My child would double over in pain for no apparent reason. The doctors couldn't pinpoint any cause for the episodes. We had been searching for answers for over a year when we came back to the idea of possible migraines. In searching for information on abdominal migraines I kept coming across the name, Dr. Seymour Diamond. This book has helped us understand migraines and their causes as well as inform us about current treatment options that are available, everything from medication to biofeedback. Through the use of case studies, Dr. Diamond discusses up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatments. He reassures parents that while there are sometimes very serious underlying conditions, not every headache is an indicator of a brain tumor.

I highly recommend this as a "must have" book for the parent of any child that suffers from headaches, not just migraines. It can help in identifying the type of headache your child experiences and offer suggestions of appropriate treatments. If your child has already been diagnosed with migraines, it is still a wonderful reference book.

As a group therapist who has faciliated time limited groups for over 12 years, I highly recommend and support the work of Bonnie Collins as outlined in this important book. Her program utilizes a structured 12 session group model that addresses all aspects of the group participants. Mind, body and spirit. Compassion, skill, tremendous sensitivity are woven into this treatment model. For example, Bonnie is aware of the normal anxiety of these women discussing such issues in public and in a group setting, that she has written material available for the group members upon walking into the first group session, as a way to bind some intial expected anxiety. The approach is not solely a cognitive one--the excercises outlines and suggested are often times experiential in nature. Well thought out and easilly read. I especially liked the handouts, assessment tools, and suggested letters offered at the end of the book. A must read for anyone working with this difficult issue in a group setting.

A senistive guide that focuses on safety and healing.

Bonnie Collins and Kathryn Marsh's book Healing for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A 12-Session Group Treatment Program, published by Whole Person Associates out of Duluth, Minnesota is a wonderful model for professionals who choose to facilitate groups for survivors of incest. Although the book is written for adult survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, I feel it can be adapted to adolescent survivors as well. The user friendly style in which the guide is written allows for easy adaptation. The authors have thought of everything from the comfort of chairs chosen to experiential exercises to develop safety. They truly attempted to put themselves in the shoes (chairs) of the survivors they serve! Collins and Marsh start with the item survivors need most - SAFETY - an item that is taken for granted by many non-survivors! Choices are given at every turn - something that survivors may also see as very foreign. The survivor is in control of whether they contribute or not. Survivors need to hear that they have permission, even if it seems redundant. Ms. Collins and Ms. Marsh recognize their very important role of re-parenting and providing for a corrective emotional experience. Inner Child Work and the use of song/lyrics entitled How Could Anyone exemplify this process clearly. The anger releasing idea of throwing ice cubes into a bathtub sounds like it could be a winner in terms of getting the different senses involved with this process. It's also an affordable way to "rid the rage." The use of meditation and relaxation done in a structured, predictable way allows for the subtle implementation of spirituality and understanding that can offer healing on a different level to those who partake. The "earthquake" guided imagery exercise helps significant others of survivors. This visualization exercise may allow the respective parties to better understand what a survivor goes through, how a flashback may be elicited, or what it might look like. After reading this book, I have decided to use this model as a guide for the teenage survivors I work with. Don't miss out on the well developed insight and knowledge that Bonnie Collins and Kathryn Marsh put together to use in this sensitive, delicate and rewarding process. Such practical tools of this nature may take years for a therapist to collect. Here it is , all in one single book!

"The Healing Room" is a very unique and personal view into the journey taken by its author Dori Bohntinsky, during her experience with the death of her daughter and others over an 18 month period. Reading this book I felt I was being let into a very special place where there was a detailed record of sadness and joys, of loss and of growth. It has touched me in many ways. Through all of this, Dori shows how the power of spirit is somehow magnified and focused through the journal writing process, and as a reader, you can share each step along the way. The book is powerful and intense, not something you can read in a day or two. Its chapters often give rise to many feelings that need their own time and space to surface and integrate. I found much of value here and know that you will too. Her framing of addictive behavior as any behavior that takes us away from feeling our true feelings is a very powerful statement for our times. Not long ago, I lost two loved ones in one year, and I know the shift in one's energy and life outlook this can cause. If you have experienced a loss of any kind, read this book and re-experience your journey and your feelings in a new light, through the beautiful messages that Dori shares with us all. Thank you Dori. --- Mark Greenia, author of "Energy Dynamics: Conscious Human Evolution."

This book is not complicated to read, and can be finished in one sitting. However, there is much to digest and I will want to open the book again and again. The Healing Room was exactly what my heart and soul needed. 8 years ago I lost my mother to Breast Cancer. At the time, I searched for a book that would help me heal and find peace. I needed to know that what I was experiencing was normal and a part of the healing process. I never found such a book. Even now, 8 years later, Dori Bohntinsky's book filled a void I never even realized still existed. I am better able to understand hope and faith and how losing my mother helped me to grow and appreciate life for all it is. I am better prepared for dealing with future losses. I am a better person for reading this book. The Healing Room is a gift to the heart and soul that everyone can use.

i read The Healing Room cover to cover in one sitting. i couldn't put it down as the author's voice came through so clearly to me in speaking the truth about loss, grief and healing. the book is a journal of spiritual healing- written in the first person and on a consistent basis during the time of the author's last four months with her daughter. The presence of mind and nuggets of joy that the author and her husband were able to pull out of their daily struggles with their daughter's illness and their own grief gifted me with the knowledge that, even during my own very darkest hours, the universe is open to helping me cope, understand and heal. reading her book was a blessing for my spirit and i highly recommend it for anyone
who is currently going through the loss of a loved one due to illness or who has already gone through it and is looking for a true, heartfelt, first- person account of how one mother and her family transmuted their anguish into joy.

This book is wonderful. My son passed away at the age of 24 and my 15 year old daughter was finding it hard to find her way through this difficult grieving process. The book touched upon so many important and pertinent facts such as your grief is unique, just like your relationship to the person you lost is unique. Whether it's the loss of a sibling, parent, grandparent or other person in a teen's life, I think this book really addresses many of the issues that teens are concerned with when dealing with a loss in their lives.

The Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great. It is the right amount of information and the right level for young readers. My first grader read 200 books last school year and it was nice to know she was learning about her world at the same time. She read this and other books from the series to my four year old who also retained much of the information.

My kids love it!

This book has an experiment that worked. My 8-year-old daughter likes the book a lot. My 5-year-old son likes the book because the book teaches him how to hear his heart.

This book has captivated my 4 1/2 year old son. (My 8 year old daughter likes it, too) My son actually stood up in preschool yesterday (he is normally quiet) and taught the class details of how the heart works and the parts of the heart. His teacher's were amazed that he was sharing something, so they let him teach. We have to read this book over and over again.

Can you hear your heart?

An introduction into how the heart works along with feeling your pulse and listening to a hearts beat with amusing illustrations reader can imitate and view diagrams of the heart.

My son frequently will tell me he can hear his heart once he rests after playing around. I figured he would enjoy exploring the activities among the last two pages in Hear Your Heart like How to Measure Your Heart Rate and How to Make a Stethoscope.

There are several kids, adults and babies illustrated among the thirty-three pages of Hear Your Heart in various settings as well as illustrations of the heart in pink, red and black colors. The areas are identified to which is a vein and artery with other illustrations showing arrows in how the heart actually beats.

Hear Your Heart begins with a girl at the Doctor's office showing a real stethoscope that is cold and making the girl shiver. She much prefers her homemade stethoscope made out of a cardboard tube. There are a few pages showing the girl and her sister listening to each other's heart and then other kids doing the same thing.

Hear Your Heart is easy to follow written in a way that kids can understand and comprehend based on the detailed illustrations. The style Hear Your Heart is written in offers all the answers that my child has along the way. This encourages my son to watch the second hand while he counts how many times his heart beats in one minute. There are times we learn like when exercising that the pace will be faster. Also noted is the ninety times a minute for an eight-year old. This is now a figure my son is striving to reach. A man's will be in the area of seventy-two while an infant is around one hundred twenty times a minute.

My son is much more aware of his heart and pulse rate and wants to check everyone that he comes in contact with, including his teddy bear. The activities enhance the book so it becomes more than just a reading tool but an overall learning experience. These books focus on the grades from one to three within the age group of six to nine.
