After reading this book, my daughter hugged it and said, 'I'm not the only one that feels like this'. That in itself made this book worth more than I paid for it!!! My daughter usually doesn't finish any book in one sitting, it doesn't matter how short it is. this book she was reading in the car while I was driving and she would say, 'listen to this momma. that's what I do.' If you have a child with bipolar this is a MUST have.

A good book for kids. It lets them know that they are not the only one facing the types of feelings associated with bipolar disease. It doesn't offer any explanations or anything in depth, but it does acknowledge their feelings. Sometimes that is all young kids need - especially when it is coming from a story book for kids. It also gives normal kids a sense of what their bipolar sibling or friend is going through. A nice book to have on your shelf to read together in the low periods.

A very beneficial book

Alien Bug Teaches Sustainability, What Could Be More Fun?

This book is as important as the book you will buy your children on family life. The alien bug No Eat and his friend Lulu, take a brother and sister through the process of learning about sustainably grown, organic food. They show the kids how it's not only important to eat your veggies but to ask questions of your grocer and farmer about how your veggies were grown. My three children ages 6, 8, and 10 are all extremely attracted to this book. I could have never taught them these important lessons without the magic of No Eat!

What a Great Children's Book!

~Fabulous for Teachers!~

Fabulous is the word to use to describe such a fun, but deep meaning, book. Its kid-friendly story is a wonderful way to teach children the difference between natural and processed foods (a line not so clearly drawn these days). Through cute characters, a plot is built around the notion of eating foods that are great for both humans and the earth from which we live.
Also, what a fantastic thing for school-aged kids to be exposed to and read! It is a book that can open up doorways for discussion about health, digestion, environmental science, agriculture, and social awareness. Teachers will love the bridge it builds between healthful diet choices and junky ones, which we can then relate to how a brain functions in the classroom.
I teach 5th grade and just read the book to my students. They were engaged and curious during the read aloud, as they were thinking about what they had just eaten at lunch! Many students don't know how to make good food choices and this book opens their minds to finding out more before popping something into their mouths. Wonderful!

A great book teaching about how important organic food can be. Before I read this book I didnt really think that organic food was that important, but after I read the book, I learned that organic food can be be very heathy for our bodies. No eat is my favorite character because when the kids first meet him, he refuses the chip that they offered him to stay healthy.
I really liked this book.

While this book is probably targeting children in the 6-12 year-old age range, my 3-year old son loves it. It has become one of his favorite books. It is a fun story about an alien bug named "No Eat" and his earthling friend Lulu, who go about teaching children the importance of sustainable farming and the benefits of eating healthy organic foods. When my son was recently offered some junk food, he loudly stated, "No eat, not food", and turned it down!

As a mother of four-year old twins, both of whom have severe food allergies, I commend and admire Ms. Rogers on her book. It is wonderful! To date, I think it is the best book in print re: food allergies and the host of issues that go along with them. Recommended reading for ANY family with ANY type of food allergy. Also excellent reading for any person who comes in contact with your child. It's straight-forward, easy to understand content provides a clear picture for those folks who are not familiar with the host of emotional, psychological and physical aspects that people close to food allergies experience on a daily basis. Congratulations to Ms. Rogers on a job very well done!

This book is a must have for families with an allergenic child. While the book focuses mainly on seafood allergies, and how to help your child cope with them, the tale is suitable for children with any allergies. Both innovative and original, No Lobster, Please! is a jewel among childrens' literature.

This book is skillfully written for those children who may not fully understand the complexities of seafood allergy, and for those of their young friends who don't understand what the allergic pal has to cope with. Written with insight and illustrated by youngsters, this book makes a difficult issue very accessible to those kids who need it. Not often is a non-fiction book entertaining while at the same time instructional.
"No Lobster, Please!" fulfills both roles handsomely. A copy should be in every pediatrician's and every allergist's waiting room.

Loving Lessons about Being Special

No Lobster, Please! is the nonfiction story of James Rogers who is in first grade at the H. Olive Day School in Norfolk, Massachusetts. James's Mother, Ms. Robyn Rogers, wrote the story for him, and the book is illustrated by James (see the self-portrait on page five) and his classmates in Ms. Fazio's class. Ms. Fazio also designed the cover. This is a book that is clearly written, illustrated and bound in love for James.

As the book opens, James is the narrator. He's sad because his family and friends are going to a lobster party. He cannot go because he's so allergic to lobster that even the air from the cooking of lobsters can cause a reaction.

James then tells us how he found out about the allergy. One day he helped his Mother crack open her lobster. From touching the lobster, he got the red bumps of hives, his lips swelled, his mouth felt tingly, his tummy hurt, and he felt like he was going to be sick. Breathing started to be hard. A call to 911 brought an ambulance and a shot of epinephrine from the paramedics. At the hospital, the doctors gave Ms. Rogers another shot to carry around for James. He didn't like the shot, but he knew it made him feel better.

As a follow-up James was tested for allergies and found out that he's allergic to all shellfish and many other types of seafood. His allergic reaction could get worse with repeated exposure, so he has to be careful.

He cannot eat at seafood restaurants, places that have seafood in their buffets, and sits as a "tuna-free" table at school. When the cafeteria has fish sticks for lunch, he eats with the school nurse.

Returning to the present, James's Dad leaves with his brother and sisters for the lobster party. James's Mom stays home, even though lobster used to be her favorite food.

He's in for a surprise, though, because she has a fun day planned just for him! He had so much fun he forgets where everyone else had gone. While ordering a dessert, he tells a little joke, "Wait, one more thing, no lobster, please!"

When I was six, beautiful banana splits beckoned. But I'd never had one. I begged my Mother for one. She finally relented (for they were very expensive). The waitress asked me what I wanted on it. I didn't know what came with a banana split. So she asked me if I wanted vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream. That sounded fine. Then she asked if I would like chocolate syrup, strawberry sauce and pineapple. I didn't know what pineapple was . . . but, well, why not? The enormous delight arrived and I dug in. It was great! Except . . . I started to itch. Then I started to swell. Then I had trouble breathing. Yup, pretty soon I was at the doctor's office. I remember it like it was yesterday . . . and don't recommend the experience. Reading this book brought all of that back. I never did quite understand what had happened until years later when I read up on allergies. I had had a temporary allergy to pineapple which I have since outgrown. But I didn't try pineapple again for many years.

Two of my children are very lactose intolerant. They can become violently ill on two slices of pizza (without taking the necessary tablets to help reduce the problem). And they crave eating dairy foods, all of which cause their insides to expand rapidly with gas. Naturally, their friends' parents always serve pizza, milk and ice cream whenever the kids get together. It's tough. Their experiences are a little like James's, but not so serious or frightening . . . just physically and emotionally painful.

For neither my children nor myself have I ever seen a children's book to help put food allergies and food digestion issues into context. I wish this book had come along a lot earlier!

Although this book focuses on lobster, I think you could use it for children with other allergies and food and environmental intolerances. In fact, having most such problems would seem like a relief compared to what James has to go through.

The best part to me is that the book shows how to take a child's "special" problem and turn it into an opportunity to make a child feel special. When our children were little, we ordered many versions of the computer-generated books that customize the book about the child. It never occurred to me (even though I'm a writer) to create my own children's book for each child. My hat's off to Ms. Rogers for going to the nth degree to create a special good feeling for her son. Nice going!

After you finish this book, I suggest that you make a book with and about a child in your life (whether a daughter or son, a nephew or niece, or grandchild . . . or just a child down the block). You'll feel special, too.

I'm a elementary school librarian and happened to pick this book up in the bargain bin at a discount bookstore. What a great find! I read it to my 1-3 grade classes and they LOVED it. English learners love that there is some spanish and English speakers liked learning a little spanish. That the spanish rhymes is a big plus. Of course, most kids can completely relate to being on a car trip and suddenly having to go to "el bano".

Bathroom, rapido!

Review Date: 2005-07-27
A humorous story about a young girl who has to go to the bathroom "rapido". They are riding in the car and the daughter announces that she needs a bathroom. The story brings the car and the parents through town, in search of "un bano". One of the huge attractions of this story is the fact that it is a K-3 book with stores, buildings, colors, and common greetings which are all written in Spanish. Because it rhymes we are able to determine the pronunciation of most of the words: because of the paintings and context clues, we are able to determine the meanings of the Spanish words. The glossary and pronunciation guide contains spelling and translations of fifty-two words and phrases.

This picture book will be a marvelous addition to the bi-lingual classroom. Children who speak or read Spanish will be able to explain greetings, colors and familiar buildings to their English speaking classmates. English speaking children will learn some Spanish and empathy for their ESL friends. The watercolor pictures in the book feature the parents in the front seat and the small girl in the back seat. There are single and double-page spreads, pictures of the girl bordered in flowers and colors. The street scene with buildings labeled in Spanish paints their red car angularly, in the middle of the street, to indicate it does not know which way to go. The double paged line at the bathroom appears interminable with strollers, grandmothers, infants, teens and women of color and diversity. Cut ending!

Very Funny Ending!

There are also several of other obstacles and points that challenge this young family.

This book is about Laura Ingall's Ma when she was nine years old. It reads very much like all the little house books about Laura Ingalls but is even easier to read. In ma's family there were three boys and three girls. Ma was the middle girl. All six of the kids like each other and get along well. Ma's name is Caroline. Her father has been lost at sea five years ago and her mother works cooking for workmen. One day Caroline overhears one of the workmen ask her mother to marry him! We learn a lot in this book like how to preserve vegetables for the winter, what kind of food to buy to last all winter, how to make a beehive, and how to behave when you're invited to a fancy house. There are also some songs like in the little house books about Laura. And we get to meet someone who Laura could have been named after. If only our parents and grandparents could write books like this about their lives. This is truly an enjoyable book.

When Abigail and Adrienne's mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. But when the girls couldn't find any books that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they wrote one themselves.

They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.

Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.

Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.

This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.

This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

This is the first (and so far only) book that my daughter loves. She is now almost 8 months old. I've been reading this book to her for about two months, and it is the only one she actually sits still for and listens to the whole thing. She examines each page so carefully, it almost looks like she is reading along. I have read it so many times that I have it memorized and when I start to recite it when she is cranky in the car, I always get a smile.

The quintessential read-aloud book, OVERBOARD chronicles the adventures of "one little bunny who likes to fling things." He tosses peaches overboard. Favorite jammies? Overboard! Bunny wipers and bunny diapers? You guessed it! And, of course, youngsters (and even oldsters) will want to join the chorus, chanting "overboard!," as each item is flung to the ground. The text has strong rhythm and rhyme, helps children ages 2-3 start developing phonological awareness, so this book is more than just a fun read; it's a good choice for encouraging early literacy skills. The illustrations are as fun as the book, with bright colors within strong black lines. Sure to be a hit in storytime and for one-on-one reading.

If it isn't tied down, Baby Bunny throws it overboard. Nothing is safe...not even himself when he decides to go up high.

OVERBOARD is the cutest little picture story book for ages 2 to 5. When I read the write-up on Amazon, I thought I sounded too adorable for words...and it is. My three-year-old wants to hear the story over and over. OVERBOARD is her new favorite book.

My one-year-old is equally transfixed by the tale, studying the colorful pictures with complete fascination. OVERBOARD is sure to be a hit in other homes with small children. Pick up OVERBOARD today for your favorite toddler or preschooler. You won't be disappointed.

I found this book to be a great way to become familiar with the range of issues that come to bear on incorporating graphics into a web page. Despite the exclusive use of Photoshop in the examples, the concepts are explained in such a way that makes it easy to identify the same graphic-editing techniques needed to be used with other software such as Paint Shop Pro, my graphic editor of choice. Good clear explanations and excellent examples do a great job of illustrating how "tweaking" things like the color depth and color pallete affect file sizes, download times, and picture quality. Originally, I kept renewing this book from my local library until I finally just bought my own copy. A great book!

I found this book by accident in the library when I was starting the process of designing our office's web site. Because I was a rank beginner to the world of web design (although I knew the PC, Windows 98, Microsoft Office, FrameMaker, PageMaker and a little Photoshop), I needed some hand-holding to get my feet wet. This book was better than anything else I found for that task.

There are other web design books I like (like Roger Black's book on Adobe Press) but this is the best one I have seen for the person who literally knows nothing about the topic.Yes, it was written in 1996 and is somewhat dated for the person who wants to be cutting edge, but you have to crawl before you can run, and this book got me through the crawling stage so I could start to feel comfortable with the concepts I would need to work with my Adobe (and now Macromedia) software.

The writing style is crisp and clean and right to the point. I read it in three hours.

Try this book if you don't know anything about web design, then take a look at Roger Black for one designer's viewpoint on design issues. Once you have those two books under your belt, the author's latest book, Web Design in a Nutshell, would be a great next step.

This is one of my 16-month-old's favorite books! She wants to read it every day! The illustrations are incredible--truly some of the best artwork you can find in children's books. And the "story line" is simple enough that she can happily predict what's coming next. The repetitive nature of the text ["Peekaboo! I see..."] also makes it easy for a baby/toddler to follow along. I wish we had discovered this book sooner... Not sure if this book will become too simple as she approaches 2. I will definitely be giving this book as baby shower gifts!

I ordered this book because my school recommended it as an appropriate and outstanding book for 2's. I received it, a little dissapointed in the lack of story line; however, my little budding toddler absolutely loves it. She guesses the "I see" before I turn the pages. And I do have to admit that I love the illustrations and the sweetness of the book. I just wish I had bought this when she was an infant and I REALLY wish (listen editors) that it was on board book, because I would love to give it as gifts to expecting moms!

My 16 month son has been intrigued with this book since the first time he saw it. He brings it to us everyday for us to read. When we can't read it to him he then sits and flips thru the pages himself.

Wonderful clear illustrations for small child.
This is a must have!

Need a new baby (or 1st birthday) gift? Are you tired of buying blankets, booties, and bunny sleepers? Then here's a gift I love to give that is guaranteed to unwrap a smile!

"Peekaboo! I see..." wee readers instantly drawn into this heartwarming story based on the popular children's game. It features an adorable African-American toddler sporting an inquisitive nature and naturally textured hair. I couldn't tell if the child is male or female, which makes it appealing to everyone.

"Peekaboo! I see..." eager little readers searching soft pastel drawings for clues. What DOES the child see? The tip of a tail. The top of a hat. Turn the page to discover a playful puppy or laughing grandma. Award-winner Rachel Isadora uses only 53 words, printed in large, easy-to-read type, to keep you guessing.

"Peekaboo! I see..." pleased young readers requesting this book again and again. The first evening my youngest daughter spent with a baby sitter, she cried when she realized Mama and Daddy were gone. Thankfully a warm lap, soothing voice, and repeats of Peekaboo Morning comforted her until we returned.

For another heartwarming book by Isadora featuring simple text with large, easy-to-read print, and captivating illustrations, read In the Beginning.

Great find!! Easy for young and old to understand. Fabulous illustrations. The pictures alone keep the kids who cannot read interested in learning more about correct posture. Thank you for finally putting out a book to teach our children how important spinal health is. Pete is a fun and easy way for kids to learn. We want more!

As a mother I am elated that there is finally a children's book that address ergonomics for children and the dangers of improperly carrying a backpack. The book is very entertaining and extremely informative. It kept not only the attention of my 8-year old daughter, but I couldn't put the book down myself! We teach our kids to take care of their teeth, but what about their spines? The amount of weight our kids are carrying on their growing spines is unbelievable! The characters in the book made learning about posture fun for my daughter. I plan on purchasing one for her school's library. The book is a must for parents with school age children!

The enjoyable, lilting text and delightful illustrations of Dinosaur Dreams beg to be read and absorbed by adults and children alike. This innovative book possesses a subtle yet consistent message that urges children to follow Pete the Posture Parrot's lead to optimal health. Dinosaur Dreams presents a novel approach in its attack on the critical and growing problems created by overloaded school backpacks carried by the majority of our students. As a teacher and mother of four, I appreciate this timely book for its literary, as well as practical, value.

This wonderful children's book is a colorful, creative story that helps attract the attention and interest of my younger patients. It helps teach children the importance of good posture in a creative and visually stimulating way. I would highly recommend this book. As a chiropractor, this book has special meaning to me. I am always looking for new ways to interest my pediatric patients in learning about healthy ways to live. This book is a powerful weapon in my arsenal.
