Hope, Faith and Charlie is a real account of what it is like to experience the possibility of losing a child. The book takes hold of your heart from page 1 and inspires you throughout. It is an intimate look inside a family's struggle with their grief and the with doctors, hospitals, etc.that are left to treat their child. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who has a child. It definitely made me appreciate the blessings I have been given, but also made me realize that it could all be taken away.

"Hope, Faith and Charlie" is one of the most touching true stories about a loving, dedicated family who make you believe in miracles, who give hope to those who think there is none to be had and to Charlie, the amazing child who beat all the odds...and his cancer!
You can't help to fall in love with Charlie and his older brother, Jay. And to their parents, Deirdre and John, you can truly "feel" what they experienced over the first few years of Charlie's young life.
You have to read this book to really understand the true meaning of unconditional love.

I wish I would have had this book a few years ago for our middle child, he too had "poop" issues. My friends could not even begin to understand the torment we went through weekly knowing that our son and now our youngest daughter - needed to poop. It was a week long battle of "bumping" as we called it (holding it in), dirty underwear, screaming fits, suppositories, yelling, bribing, etc...

Our son has somewhat outgrown the problem, although he only poops every two or three days. However, it is not the ordeal it once was. But we still have a four year old daughter going through the same torment. This book was an INSTANT success, I'm talking overnight. I wish I could pinpoint the thing that made the difference, but part of me has to believe seeing it on paper that another child "just like me" has the same problem, that it's okay and there are solutions. She has pooped a total of six times without much problem...we sit her on the toilet every other night and read her the book (of course at her request). My husband and I almost fell off our chair when the other day she was making motions like she needed to poop and he asked her - She said "yes" and proceeded to the toilet like it was the normal thing to do. It almost brings me to tears as I write it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Don't hesitate to get this book, it WORKS!!!

This book helped my son understand that he is not the only one with withholding problems...however it is a little wordy and loses his attention probably 1 out of every 3 times we read it.

Overall, if you have a child with bowel movement problems, I would recommend you purchase this book for them.

a MUST read/buy for kids that struggle....

After 2 years of problems with pooping, this book was an overnight success for my four year old. I thought she'd be struggling with these issues into grade school and this book was so perfect in helping her to work it out and she is now totally fine. Seriously, you MUST buy this if your child struggles. A miracle book.

My 3 year old son was afraid to poop in the potty and would always hold it in until it was unbearable and then go in his underwear despite all our efforts. I ordered this book and read it to him and two days later he was pooping in the potty, not once but twice a day. I strongly recommend this book if your child is experiencing pooping issues. The only downside to this book is it is a little long requiring some paraphrasing, but well worth it.

A tough read for someone in the initial stages of divorce. The books contains great information to help the divorced parents understand what the children will experience in the years ahead. I think it is great to know this so that the divorced parents can take measures to eliminate or minimize the effects of the divorce on the children for years to come.

Thank you for giving us a voice!

I'm so glad I found this book! For a long time I have been trying to figure out how my parents' divorce 25 years ago has affected me. The stories in this book and the author's insight gave me a comforting "legitimacy" for my feelings and helped me to verbalize them. It made me realize that I'm not alone. Staal discusses many issues that arise during and after parents divorce, like how money is often equated with love, how all family relationships change, how the history of a family is revised. She describes why many adult children of divorce usually show three different types of behavior in their romantic relationships: "the nester," "the wary investor" and the "commitment-phobe." Immediately after finishing the last page, I ordered copies for my mother, my father, and my sister with the hope that we can start to talk more openly about what happened in our family. I don't usually buy self-help books, but this book isn't like that. It's beautifully written. The author includes her own emotions and personal experiences from her parents' divorce, and some of her memories were so sad, I cried. I never felt like she was preaching or telling me there was something wrong with me. Rather, I felt like I was talking to a good friend who could understand where I was coming from. Within the pages of this book, I read passages that could have come from my own journal. I heard my own voice. It is a must read for all adult children of divorce - or anyone whose life has been touched by divorce.

Realistic & Helpful Approach to The Divorce

Though Staal doesn't give any direct comfort or guide as to how to heal the hurts (she herself admits that she is still a work in progress, experiencing much of the same angst as we do with the whole divorce "thing"), it is still a very interesting approach to the complex and sometimes unimaginably painful hurts of the past and present.

If your parents are divorced, it would be hard to not relate to this book in some way - her detailed accounts of her own experience, not to mention the re-telling of so many others' experiences, were at times hard to read for me because of the way they hit home.

I would highly recommend reading The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce : The 25 Year Landmark Study by Wallerstein first if you haven't read any other books on this topic, or if you are new to delving into this sometimes scary experience of re-processing your parents' divorce as an adult.

Important contribution to society

Review Date: 2007-05-04
I am a child of the "ideal" divorce that happened in my infancy in 1974. I had regular contact with my father and my parents and step dad were always positive toward each other. I have been happily married for 14 years and am a mother of 3 children.

This book is not a hard data study, but it is a very important contribution to the divorce legacy discussion. So many children of divorce live in quiet isolation because society has insisted that we are fine and better off. Many of us are, but we still have very real pain that affects us in different ways for the rest of our lives.

Many of us were surrounded by other children of divorce growing up, and yet never spoke about our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This book allows adult children of divorce speak candidly. Some have difficulty verbalizing their experiences, so it can be very useful for our spouses from intact families to read a book like this.

What's it like being the child of an "ideal divorce"? Imagine you are in the emergency room for a broken leg. You complain about he pain and staff around you says, "Just be glad it's not gangrene-now that's something to complain about." No one is fixing your leg. You complain again, and are met with more horror stories about shattered legs, amputated legs, and mangled legs. Still no one is dealing with the simple break in your very painful leg. You learn to stop complaining and limp along with whatever resources you can muster up yourself. Sometimes even children from the worst divorces are expected to deal with it themselves and are expected to show no signs of being negatively affected by it.

How it affects the marriages and parenting of adult children of divorce is not thoroughly covered. The author was not married or a parent when she wrote this book, so we'll have to look elsewhere for that material.

This book simply reassures the readers that they are not alone and these experiences are universal.

Don't look for answers here-society is still working on that.

Another excellent resource is Between Two Worlds: The Inner lives of Children of Divorce by Marqaurdt.

I Found Myself in this Book...I highly recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the most amazing book I have ever read. I highly recommend this book to everyone! I had to buy the book for a few of my friends, who are children of divorce. It allowed me to understand the way I am, and why I handle myself the way I do, when it comes to relationships. At the time of my parents divorce, I had to be strong and was a little adult and grew up too fast because of it. Yet I dealt with it and moved on. Yet I never realized that in later years the impact of the divorce would paralyze my future relationships. This book put into perspective of why I have felt the way I did, and that I am not alone.

As both an educator serving hundreds of children over the past 12 years, and a mother of three I have found this sensational, practical book a wonderful resource. Parents, teachers and caregivers will find in this well organized, clearly written book a wealth of information for situations that all of us who nurture children encounter throughout our daily interactions. A true, sensitive delight filled with hundreds of user friendly exercises, fresh ideas and insights into how the world sounds to children today. Helen Shaw, secondary school teacher

This book is an excellent resource for both parents and educators who deal with both mainstream and challenged populations. For those of us interested in gaining from the benefits of the latest brain research, or "brain-compatible strategies," without having to sort through the theoretical concepts or scientific research that often make these books cumbersome this book is the answer. The author--a clinical psychologist with actual experience in these matters--shares with us his years of research and professional experience in a very handy, ready to use volume that provides hundreds of fun, useful, hands-on exercises. Each chapter also thoughtfully provides dozens of musical suggestions based on songs that our kids actually listen to and recognize. The amount of research that must have gone into this book boggles the mind. This is an offering from someone who not only KNOWS children, but also loves and cherishes them. If you are fortunate enough to attend one of Dr. Ortiz's workshops on this topic you will be further enriched and enchanted by his charm, knowledge and humor. Mindy Mother of two, educator

I bought this highly recommended book to assist me with the many practical ideas that all caregivers crave. The book has easily surpassed my expectations and lived up to all the high praise and accolades from my friends. As a mother who also home schools two children, however, this book is a rich source of hands-on activities as well as inspiration for enriching family bonds. For parents-or nursery home workers-in search of very effective solutions for nap-time, or sleepy-time resources Dr. Ortiz's charming CDs: "It's Sleepy Time!" (for younger children), or "Daydreams to Dreams" (for older children)are HIGHLY recommended!!

our two year old daughter loves the potty train. she was showing all the signs of being ready for the potty but this was the book that turned theory into practice. she loves to sit on her potty with the book in her lap and a big "choo choo" as things started to happen. a wonderful book, very engaging for small children. our six year old even liked it, especially the last page (and i aint going to spoil the surprise for you). i would highly recommend this book for anyone with a child ready to take the next step in life's great adventure.

This is an absolutely wonderful book! We read it every night for a week, and one day our 21 month old son declared he wanted to "ride potty train". A success! It's a great way to get children excited about the potty, reduce any fears, and make it a fun way to visit the bathroom (we keep ours in a basket by the potty).
It's light-hearted and beautifully illustrated. A must-have for any child (especially boys since this is the featured character) that loves trains.

This wonderfully engaging book has become my standard gift for my friends' new born grandchildren. Everyone who has been fortunate enough to receive it has loved it. A pediatrician friend of mine doesn't want to rush her little one's life along, but knows that when it's time it will be the first one to be read to her.
This charming story of potty training gives kids permission to try it without guilt. The pictures and colors bring the story to life. You'll love it!

A recent nightly news program featured this wonderful book. Apparently, a young boy could not calm down during school. His parents took him in to his doctor, who quickly diagnosed him with ADD. Before going to meds, his parents wanted to explore other options. The boy's teacher suggested reading "Remmy and the Brain Train" to him every night before bed. Within ONE WEEK, his behavior toned down, and he was just fine during classes. Coincidence? Hardly. Sometimes getting a proper night's rest is all our kids need. ...). This book is worth it's weight in gold, especially considering you get a CD along with it. Great for all kids for help sleeping through the night and getting the proper amount of much needed rest.

Kids today aren't getting enough sleep. It is obvious when you look at the number of children who are being labeled as having ADD or ADHD, when all they really need is more sleep. If you are a parent of a young child, I highly recommend this book, not just for your child(ren) but for parents too. Its important for parents and children to understand how sleep, or lack of sleep affects the body and more importantly, the mind. Remmy and Dr. Zeez help children to understand why they need to get their sleep and how they can benefit from getting 9 hours of GOOD sleep every night. I'm all ready reading this with my 6 week old daughter. The play along CD which accompanies the book is a great bonus which I find relaxes me as well as my daughter as it is played. Enjoy some good rest...you and your child(ren) deserve it!

And poetry to boot!

Maas does a fine job in explaining to children why it's important to sleep. He writes in rhyme, and the colorful funny pictures add to the entertainment.

For adults, I give my strongest recommendation for Dr. William Dement's The Promise of Sleep. Stanford sleep researcher Dement covers everything from sleep pathology, dreams, and how sleep-load even affects your intelligence and internal organs. If you love a medical detective story, or just want help in physically feeling better, go check it out!

There are a lot of emotions, both good and bad, that go along with this process and they are all shared within this journal. Financial and social struggles are also seen along the way. This journal is a very good description of the nightmare that infertility can be.

I still have the copy of the book my mother-in-law gave me 30 years ago, and the worn cover reminds me of how often I referred to it while my now-adult children were growing up. I'm ordering 3 copies of the updated version today; it's the perfect gift for all the brand new parents I know. Want to know when to alienate the doctor by calling at midnight and when to wait until Monday morning? This book is The One..... Want to walk into the pediatrician's office with a clear, concise idea of what symptoms to convey? It's The One. Want to avoid a trip to the doctor's office or urgent care center altogether? This book can help you do that with confidence and a clear conscience. It's definitely an excellent buy for any and all parents.

I highly recommend this book to new parents; it will give you more credibility when you visit the doctor and you are not seen as an anxious new parent.

I bought this book 27 years ago when I had my first child. I loved it then and love it now. I give it to every expectant mother I know. Our doctor was surprised that a new mom would know exactly what to ask and what information to have on hand. It has an easy to follow format with questions and guidelines for the taking care of your child. The book helps the parent know when to call the doctor or when to head to the emergency room. The book of course has been updated but the information from my original book is just as valuable. I still use it today to answer those important questions...virus or bacterial infection?

Very easy to read in layman's terms. As the mother of a four year old with PDD, I would suggest this book as a great book to start off with if your child was diagnosed with autism or pdd. It touches on a lot of areas ABA, schooling etc. without getting to technical. It also has statements and examples made by adults with autism/pdd which I found very interesting.

Targeting Autism is an excellent book for those new to Autism. Families and teachers should especially appreciate the analysis and overview of the various educational interventions, from one-on-one methods, to group programs used in many preschool and school situations. The book lists many available resources and spotlights inspiring new advances in research creating an overall atmosphere of hope and possibility for the prospects of more universally effective treatments and eventual cure of this devastating developmental disorder.

Since the symptoms and manifestations of Autistic Spectrum Disorders vary in incidence and severity, those who read this book should not be unduly encouraged or discouraged by the often times conflicting reports of success and/or failure of the various treatments and interventions discussed, but rather use the information given to further investigate the possibilities of each treatment or intervention on an individual or case by case basis.

It REALLY is an overview.

Why it should be so hard to find a book that thoughtfully discusses the myriad of autism treatments, I don't know. As a parent of a child diagnosed last year at age three, I appreciate this book.

Thank you Shirley Cohen for writing it. Thank you Amazon, for making it so easy to find.

First off, she defines autism in layman's terms and with first person testimonials.

Secondly, she provides a life cycle view of autism, so that you have SOME idea of what the future might hold for your child.

Third, she describes how families cope with autism, that some become driven, others fall apart, others adopt a "Holland" approach.

Then she discusses treatments, including a solid analysis of educational approaches such as Lovaas (leans positive), mainstreaming, TEACH, DAP, etc... and non-traditional approaches, such as AIT, FC, etc...

And she talks about recovery too, the controversy that very term raises. She closes this chapter with a quote that could have come straight out of my own heart: "A parent asked, What if my child remains autistic? What will we do? The best you can - with your love, your skills, and all the resources you can marshal - to help him achieve as independent and joyful a life as possible for him."

Perhaps I love this book because so much of what she writes does articulate what I have felt as I've gone over the different options for my son's interventions.

But also, her testimonials from a wide range of sources really help to illuminate autism as well.

And finally, her book is very REASONED in tone.

The only thing missing is a chapter that summarizes her thoughts about what she thinks parents should do. I mean really, most parents are reading these books for ADVICE! Even if parents eventually do something else, its always nice to have a plan laid out that you can either agree with or react against and develop your own. You won't find an action plan here, but the information provided should help you in making one of your own.

The Huskies & Malamutes Must Get Through!

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow nor gloom of night will keep this pack of hardy Arctic dogs from reaching their goal!

Togo was a beautiful male Siberian husky who was part of the team who got the serum through to Nome during the Diptheria Epidemic of 1925. His part and those of the other dogs were eclipsed by one famous husky named Balto who led the team during the last 53 miles. Togo had quite a track record. He won many dog sled races and from the time he was 8 months old, showed his independent streak by hopping fences and holding his own as a musher with larger huskies and malamutes.

A strong, hardy dog with a curly tail, Togo plays an important role in history. During the outbreak of diptheria in January of 1925, a desperate plea was sent to the Governor in Juneau, declaring an emergency. A train was loaded with the necessary serum, but snow precluded it from getting through. In those days airplanes had open cockpits. Planes did not fly to Alaska then because inclement weather precluded air lift as pilots could not survive exposure to the extreme cold. The only way for the medicine to get through to Nome was via dog sled.

Enter Togo. The hardy husky, together with his canine team mates and musher Leonhard Seppala brave atrocious weather conditions for some 350 miles to get the medicine to Nome. Togo led his team for several days with no rest until a second musher picked up where this team left off.

The illustrations are masterpieces as well as this wonderful book. It is an important part of early U.S./Alaskan history and will be treasured by all ages. Readers will feel the freezing Arctic air as those huskies and malamutes brave long distances to get the serum to Nome. The dog sled teams got the medicine there several days before the deadline date. If not for these dogs, the epidemic would have claimed many casualties. Togo has rightfully earned his honored place in history and will be treasured for time immemorial.

This book makes me think of the 1979 classic, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now." Be sure to read this with other books about Balto and the incredible race against time during the Diptheria Epidemic of 1925.

This book is thoroughly enjoyable and provides a well-told account of the amazing journey to provide life-saving vaccines. By only reasons for not giving it a full five stars were that I thought some of the illustrations might be a bit scary to younger children, and also I thought that the story ended rather abruptly -- it is good, but be prepared to answer youngsters questions such as "Did Togo get the people the medicine?" and "Why didn't Togo get to finish his race?" See also Big Enough Anna, by Pam Flowers, for a very different story that also involves sled dogs.

The book is beautiful. My son and I are following the Iditarod race electronically. In order to understand this race, we were looking into the original Great Serum Race and information about dog sledding. This is an eloquently told story based on facts that is fitting for an elementary student. The artwork is fantastic and helps pull you into the brutal winter conditions that is tied to the story.
