I just stumbled on this book while looking for Iman cosmetics. It's the best beauty book out there for women with darker skin. We search for the right shades to compliment our skin. Sometimes you find it, but mostly you end up with a rainbow of things that are unflattering. Every young girl first trying makeup should read this book and get the basics figured out. I wish I'd read it a long time ago.

This is a good book

I bought this book as christmas gift to myself. This book tells of basic makeup application for the eyes, skin, lips, etc. It has different looks for you to try and it gives you instruction on how to apply it. I rated this book 4 stars because I thought their should have been more african-american women in our variety of colors, but the book is the the book of color. I have tried one of the looks and I can say I looked HOT!! Good for beginners.

A MUST for ALL Women!

This book is nothing like any other "celebrity" how-to-book you've ever read. Let's face it, celebrities set trends, style, fashion, good or bad. Looking at them we think, I'd look fabulous too if I had a person to do my hair and make-up flawlessly! Iman says you CAN have someone to do it, YOU! And because no one was really interested in doing make-up for darker hues when she stepped onto the runway, she had to do her own. But the silver lining is that now she can share everything she learned. Her first point is crucial, she emphasizes that women must begin by looking in the mirror and seeing that they are beautiful without the makeup. When I heard her on Oprah's Show, I couldn't believe she was so real, down to earth, and connected to women. That connection is detailed as she provides little girl pictures of all the beautiful ceebrity women she showcases, and there is great diversity among them. This is ideal for little girls who feel like ugly ducklings,in that the book allows them to see there's a whole lot of growing into their beauty they will have to do. She also shows that few of us are born with, and keep, perfect skin, but we all have beautiful skin to work with. Whether light or dark, the book includes the do's and don'ts in an easy to follow language and doesn't endorse a bunch of expensive products. Instead, there are basic rules of the trade, products that she considers must haves, and examples of every look one might want for any event (including the I just ran to the store look!). Finally, the directions are detailed for skin, lips, eyes, eye brows, and much, much more. Most importantly, she shares that any woman can enjoy different colors with no holds barred. Express yourself! Beautifully photographed, illustrated, and packed with information, Iman uses humor and grace to connect and make you feel like a friend. Makes a Wonderful gift!

Former supermodel Iman, now founder of a successful cosmetic line, focuses on the entire gamut of skin tones - from light to dark - with this quality coffee table book.

Full of chapters on skincare and makeup, Iman also debunks the myths and provides insights from top beauties like Selma Hayek, Eve and Tyra Banks. Sure to be appreciated by all women of color - whether black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern or Asian.

I love this book! I checked it out of the library but I'm planning on purchaseing it soon. So many great tips and everything is explained so nicely. I love Iman's voice in it too. She's sweet and funny and is open-minded about how there are rules in applying make-up but no rules! Allow yourself to be creative! The only reason I'm not giving it a five star is because no book is perfect and also because I didn't see one picture of a woman with the same shade of skin as mine. I have a unique color. Not dark brown but not light tan. So, I was in between a lot with the advice on what colors to purchase. Plus, it didn't help that women like Vanessa Williams and Halle Berry are in it claiming to be African-American (black pride) but we all KNOW that they wouldn't look like that if they weren't biracial. Yea, your black with blue eyes?! Let me not go there....two points for Alicia Keys who said she is biracial. Anyway, enjoy and don't forget to have fun!

In all fairness the book did have a considerable amount of information, but the information was geared to the consumer or novice...definately not for the nail tech. There was little information regarding decorative nails, and again it was all basic information that one probably learned in beauty school. There are definately better books out there contain more knowledge than this one. If you are hoping to learn something new this is not the book for you.

The book, Perfect Nail and Skin Care, is what I was looking for. It gave full coverage of the healthy nail and healthy skin and then identified problem areas. This is information that one wouldn't know without research or attending beauty school. Thank you, I am pleased.

Who needs a book about NAILS? What a waste of my money and what a waste of paper. I found it boring and painful to read. Although I have beautiful nails I don't need a book on how to take care of them. Borrrring.

I searched long and hard for a book that differentiated diverse approaches and treatments to nail care, would give a large, detailed photo showing how to do simple, but important things, like how to properly file a nail. But, this book gave me more. It classified types of polishes, approaches, looks and trends with the inner strategies of a good nail tech. It teaches you how to care for your hands and feet, but also, how to deal with emerging problems. Important and timeless sections on how
to do your own nails professionally were straightforward and unadorned, as they should be, and it offered detailed descriptions with photos demonstrating the right way to use basic tools. But, then the book took flight! In an interesting contrast to a traditional "how to" book, it suddenly interspersed "editorial" images in the sleek, sophisticated, format of a haute fashion fashion magazine, to further emphasize the many ways nails could be arresting. The book achieved this through color, "metallics, frosts, jewel-tones" using jewelled rings as a foil, underwater shots showing in blues and greens; texture interest, design concepts or flower embellishments tripping across the pages.

At last, book worth buying on nail care!

This book proved excellent in presenting the basics of nail care. I thought the information on nutrition alone was enough to buy the book! I have not seen other books, especially magazines, make nail care so simple, yet informative and interesting. From experience this is all it takes to get a good set of nails and good-looking hands. The book does not specify exactly what brands of nail products are best to use (which again from my experience is good, as what works for one person will not necessarily work for another!), but makes up for it through the excellent illustrations and ideas.

I loved this book--it was easy to understand and made a lot of sense. Yes, Dr. Murad is pushing his own product line, and yes, his products are rather costly. However, you get what you pay for, and I don't mind paying the extra money for something that WORKS. His products are the best I have ever used, and since I am not willing to go under the knife to make myself look younger, I will gladly shell out the extra money to improve the appearance of my skin. I have tried many, many skin care products and by far this is the best. So really, if you aren't willing to buy his products this book isn't worth your time and money. But if you want to see dramatic changes in your skin and don't mind paying extra for it then by all means purchase this book!

I would also like to address the comments made by a few others saying that the positive comments must have been made by employees of Dr. Murad's company: I can assure you I am the farthest thing from an employee of his there could be. I am a 40 year old stay-at-home mom who is trying to control not only adult acne, but signs of aging as well. No one has paid me to make this review, I just want to share with others my experience with this skin care line. Besides, all their products come with a 100% money back guarantee; if you decide the products just aren't worth the money then you can return them. You can't do that with a bottle of Oil of Olay.

This is basically a commercial pitch for Dr. Murad's spas and products. Unless you are planning on buying his regime, he gives very, very scant information about how you could accomplish the program using other, less expensive products.
Don't expect an easy how-to giving you day by day advice of supplements and skin care. It's not here. I decided to buy this based on other's good reviews. Now I'm thinking that they were written by employees. I was very disappointed.

There is a lot of useful information in this book; unfortunately, Dr. Murad promotes HIS products at the expense of others. That said, this book was written by Dr. Murad and is "The Murad Method" for ageless skin. I am sure the folks who sell his line find this book helpful to those purchasing his products.

I found that the book helped break down something so complicated. When you think about all that is out there regarding skin. Q10 this and peptide that. I did not want to do botox or anything like that. I needed something that was clear. While I am not following the diet I have found great results. My skin is smoother, I don't look my age and I love it! It was really an easy commitment to make.

this is a good book - no subliminal marketing in my opinion

Wow. I have to say that after reading a couple of the other reviews on this book, I see that a few people missed the big picture. As a skin care professional myself, I completely understand why Dr. Murad would make the product recommendations he did in his book - it is because his are really the only formulas available right now that are 'complete' formulas to achieving healthy skin. People nowadays have a plethora of products to choose from...the challenge is, how do they choose the right products for their skin problem. Dr. Murad's approach is logical and medically sound. With the information he provides in his book, consumers will hopefully be able to make a more informed decision when it comes to choosing products for their skin. So, I am giving this book 5 stars. (I stumbled upon this book at my local library.)

It is just a great, handy tool to have around to better help you and clients with the skin and products.

I found this book to be some what out dated. There were alot of ingredients that where not listed in this book and some our quite common when working with skin care products. It seemed to have some but not all of whats in your cosmetics so I did not find it to be very useful at all. Its on a shelf at home and not at work where it was intended to be.

Aubrey masterfully provides well-researched information on early herbal medicine along with cosmetics to modern-day products. I love the organitoons-funny pictures making fun of big corporate companies and their lies and the great chart chockfull of information on certain benefits of each herb for skin care. This is a great saver, gives you full details for "The Natural Method" for Hair & Skin and will make you feel good about what you do for your body. Also a guide to make sure that you pay for a quality product for your body. The information is funny, true, and helpful. This will really change your life-I love it. There are even recipes for your own skin/hair-care and a list of bad ingredients to avoid. I also recommend Aubrey Organics skin/hair-care. You will love them!

I read this book years ago and have been using his products almost exclusively. I do buy my makeup at department stores and they always ask me if I use their "cleansing" products too because my skin is so beautiful. Not on your life!!!! I turned to Aubrey after years of department store products where my skin had become dry, flaky, and irritated. Now I spend the bare minimum and use the bare minimum and my skin has never been better. I follow the routine he recommends in his book. It truly is a keeper.

This is one of most scientifically based books I have read on skin and hair care. From the listings of natural and synthetic chemicals in this book, I have been able to identify the chemicals in products I have been using that caused severe damage to my hair and scalp. I have seen several doctors over the past 10 years and have been given prescribed medication and shampoos to cure my problem - with no effectiveness. I have even used (supposedly) natural shampoos and conditioners from health food stores. I discovered that I was using products with synthetic chemicals (probably used as preservatives) that are listed in Aubrey Hampton's book. All of the products I've been using had some or many synthetic chemicals in them.

Based on the information in I've been reading in Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care, I have developed my own skin care and scalp treatments. I started noticing improvement in my skin daily. It took about 3 weeks for my scalp problem to clear up completely. I've been using Aubrey's Selenium Shampoo also, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for those who want to correct their hair and scalp problems. I continue use a leave-on conditioner I developed. I am a black woman and I have very kinky hair. My hair has stopped falling out and breaking off in large quantities. This book, Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care is backed up with SOUND, SCIENTIFIC information. Aubrey Hampton has presented information about his experiences and those of his peers working in this field as a chemists, as well. I cannot thank Aubrey Hampton enough for the time and commitment he made to create this book. It has helped me tremendously.

If you want to know the FACTS and HAVE GOOD RESULTS and SAVE YOUR MONEY, BUY THIS BOOK!!! You must be patient. Nothing so GOOOD comes comes easy.

I don't know what's up with the reviewer who said that almost all the remedies were on her website. She gives more than enough common household or "buy anywhere" remedies. The ones on her website were tried and true by her so of course she would sell them so we don't have to go to Hollywood to purchase them. She didn't mention her website's line and lip corrector which really works! I see visible results after only 2 weeks. Get this book. It's worth it. Right now, you can get the book free if you order almost anything from her website.

Not only have I read the book, I have met the author. She hasn't just written a book, she lives it every day. She is beautiful and caring and knows what she is talking about. Her book is not only informative, it is fascinating to read. I especially love how she wraps up each section with a list of the products and where best to find them. You can also call her and she will spend as much time as you need to get your questions answered. She never does the hard sell - she just offers great advice and lets you decide. I use her products and I know they work. I can see and feel a difference. She is a true professional with ethics and integrity and I recommend her books and her advice without hesitation to anyone who wants to look and feel better from head to toe!

I SPENT TONS OF MONEY TRYING TO GET RID OF THE LITTLE BROWN SPOTS ON MY FACE WITH LITTLE RESULTS. I TRIED ONE PRODUCT THAT LOUISA RECOMMENDED AND IT DID WAY MORE THAN THE TREATMENT I PAID A TON OF MONEY FOR. THE SPOTS ARE ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE!! I LOOK TEN YEARS YOUNGER. I'VE TRIED OTHER PRODUCTS AND REMEDIES THAT SHE RECOMMENDS WITH SIMILAR RESULTS. I KEEP THIS BOOK HANDY AT ALL TIMES. THANKS, LOUISA!!!

I happen to know the author and she is the greatest inspiration. I can't wait for her new book coming out probably in December 2004. I took my mom to Laura's salon today and she was delighted when I gave her a copy of the book. I just finished taking Laura's class through the Learning Exchange and she's inspired me to change my life. Just reading her book improved my look. Laura is an incredible down to earth person hardly aware of her celebrity status. This book can save you hundreds of dollars in cosmetic purchases while helping you learn to pamper your friends and family. Using the instructions in this book I gave my best friend a pedicure while she nursed her newborn baby. The baby was early and she missed her pedicure appointment. Even if you live in Sacramento and go to Laura's salon and day spa you will still love this book. You can buy lots of products at her website. I haven't found a product yet that disappointed me and I am a confessed product junkie.

The author, a model turned aesthetician, shares her knowledge about natural body care. She tells how to care for your skin, eyes, and hair and gives recipes for creams, shampoos, conditioners, etc. that have natural and few ingredients, are easy to make at home, and are inexpensive. She also includes a wonderful section about buying cosmetics in stores, how salespeople trick you into buying more than you want and need, and how you can avoid those pitfalls.

Unlike other books that are loaded with recipes and leave you undecided what's best for you, du Priest suggests one or two for each skin and hair type and tells you why they will work for you. For people who may not believe that such simple and inexpensive lotions will work, she points out that her sugar-oil scrub for aging skin, which you can make at home in 1 minute from ingredients in your kitchen, has the same composition as a $15 beautifully packaged mini-tube sold in beauty stores.

Other beauty books require you to buy dozens of basic ingredients before you can start your home cosmetics, duPriest's doesn't. Her ingredients can easily be found in supermarkets.

I liked the author's straightforward way and throughout the book I always felt she was honest

This book could be good for a model wanna-be. It does have a chapter on shaping your eyebrows and waxing your legs - ouch! However, if you want useful recipes and remedies do not buy this book! The author's idea of a recipe for Foot-Soaking Fizzies is Alka Seltzer and your favorite essential oil. Her recipe for Aromatherapy Bath Salts is epsom salt, your favorite essential oil and food coloring! This book lacks useful information and only has a few recipes other than those listed on the back cover. Most ingredients are not natural and most of her "secrets" would irritate my sensitive skin.

Great book, only one concern ...

I've had this book for only three days, and already I've put avocado and mayonnaise in my hair (with good results), doctored up some shampoo (with good results), put milk of magnesia on my husband's face, as well as paste made from aspirin and water (for blemishes!) and scrubbed my skin with olive oil and sugar (with good results).

My *only* concern is about hair removal. DuPriest advocates waxing, and I'm going to try it on my legs. But for hair on a woman's chin, I understand it should only be removed by electrolysis in order to stop regrowth, and that waxing or tweezing will stimulate the folicle, affect the hormones that cause chin-hair growth, and cause the hair to grow in thicker. This information came from an electrologist, so it could be a case of she said, she said. Waxing is certainly cheaper than electrolysis, and for many areas of the body, I think it's ideal. I would like to see a future edition of this book address the chin issue.

Apart from that one concern, I am really enjoying the many, many ideas in the book. My wish list has grown considerably to include strawberries for my face, rollers (not hot rollers) for my hair, cornstarch for the waxing process, moisturizer containing glycolic acid for nighttime, another moisturizer containing sun block for daytime and more avocados for my hair. This book has the kind of information that can put a reader in a definite girly phase, which is very handy for enduring a brutal winter.

I would consider giving the book five stars if the editors had caught all the grammatical errors, but several, from basic to obscure, made it through the editing process.

Great ideas, at any rate.

I found this book to be moderately informative, but also a tad hypocritical. Dr. L emphasizes many times throughout the book that everyone's skin is individual and reacts to certain products differently, however, she constantly touts "favorite" ingredients as surefire treatments, ignoring the fact that what works wonders for her may be drastically irritating or ineffective for someone else. While it's true that this book had some interesting information on skin care ingredients, most of Loretta's advice is made with the assumption that your skin will react the same way that hers does, despite all of her attempts to be objective.
I picked up this book hoping it could help me with acne that's been troubling me for a few years. Dr. Loretta says very little on treating acne, as her book is primarily focused on adressing wrinkles and other age-related issues. If age is your primary concern, that you may find this book useful, however, if you're looking to improve your skin's clarity, this isn't the book for you. Dr. L's only significant comment on acne treatment is her reccommendation of salycilic acid, a common sense suggestion, as this ingredient is found in virtually every acne treatment avaliable. She also suggests Benzoyl Peroxide (an ingredient that works for some but greatly aggravates conditions for almost just as many) without any caution or mention of profound side-effects. I had been hoping, in reading this, that I would find less superficial advice on skin-clearing than "salycilic acid works for everyone and will clear your skin" (this is not a direct quote from the book,by the way). If salycilic acid worked that simply, than anti-acne treatments would work perfectly, and no one would suffer uncurable acne.
I wouldn't denounce this book one hundred percent, but, for my purposes, it was disappointing. If you're looking for specifically anti-aging solutions, this book may provide a vaguely helpful guide to composing a new regime, but at best I would suggest simply getting a copy from the library. It's not nearly helpful or informative enough to warrant a purchase.

Full of great information on quality ingredients.

I thought this was a great book. Funny enough - I found it while looking for my OWN skin care product line. While doing a search for Platinum Skin Care I found her book highlighted with my weblink. She had recommended purchasing from my line. I of course, had to purchase the book to see what she had to say. I found that we agreed almost 100% on the types of ingredients and cosmeceuticals that should be used on the skin. I gave the book to all of my employees to read over. We all enjoyed it and found her to be very in depth when describing the ingredients to use. Great book! Glycolic chemical peel 30% 1oz (30ml)Retinol Molecular Serum .10% 1oz.

I am thankful that this book is out there to educate all of us trying to swim our way through the drugstore for skincare products. I love that this book focuses on the functional concentrations of active ingredients found in products instead of recommending brand names in an effort to teach us to understand what we are buying and using. I can personally attest that I have spent money on snake oil in the past and using the principles in this book am hopefully on the right path to better skincare.

This book requires a thoughtful read and while it is not a complicated manual I have my own copy to serve as a reference. Get it from the library first if you are unsure whether you want to commit to a skin care regimen that is more than a 'wash your face and slap on cream' kind of thing. If you are then you will probably find that it is a book worth owning.

This book is the best book I've ever read for the home user of skin care products who need help in selecting cleansers, toners, moisturizers, etc. I am recommending this book to all of my clients. It is nice to discover my views and philosopy of skin care (after nearly 20 years in the field) (which I teach my clients) agree with about 98% of what Dr. Ciraldo promotes...a nice validation for me!

While there were some very practical suggestions to improve your skin, the book did not give any specifics. I found it a bit complicated. There were no real solutions for me other than dont use soap, anything laurate (look at product ingredients) and shea butter. It will take me more than 6 weeks to understand all the technical mumbo-jumbo.

I bought a copy of this when it was a new book (1987). Make no mistake about it, this is an 80's makeup style book. The approaches to eye makeup look rather garish today (though some would still apply to nightclubbing). Some of the advice about skin care is woefully out of date. Worth looking at if you're interested in determining what colors you look best in (clothing and makeup). The advice about makeup brushes is helpful to the novice. Take the rest with a grain of salt.

Over the years, this book has been my best help to age gracefully and to feel my best. I am now 57 years old, and I feel fresh and alive, with both an inner glow and an outer one. Having learned through the Color system how to find clothes that flattered my natural coloring, I can easily highlight with make-up. Whether we are going fly-fishing or getting dressed for a fancy party, I need only a small kit to make me feel my best.

Thank you, Carole Jackson, for helping us to be the special women we already are.

Right On - Seasonal Color Does the Trick

I had a seasonal color analysis done in 1979, when Carole Jackson came out with her first book, "Color Me Beautiful". I have found that this system works best of all to find the colors that flatter me most (I am between Winter and Summer, a "cool" person). This book helped me to select my best colors in makeup and also explains why.

I recommend it highly for anyone just trying to get together the best colors!

Forget it!

If you know your season and your best colors (from any other Color Me beautiful book) then forget this one. You're much better off buying Bobbi Brown's or Aucoin's book, both of which will offer you much better make-up tips and ideas.

The book is badly presented with boring pictures and graphics and an uninspiring layout that does nothing to attract your eye. When you go through Brown's or Aucoin's books, you find yourself itching to put some make on, with this one, you'll close the book and wonder what's on TV.

A Shocking Expose Relevant in Today's World

And you thought that horrible "medical" experiments on humans only took place in Germany and Japan during World War II? This exhaustively researched and documented book about using prisoners in Pennsylvania as guinea pigs to test the safety and efficacy of various types of medical, pharmacutical, cosmetic, and military products during the post-war years was an enormous surprise to this reader.

How so many highly respected and educated Americans could take part in these such immoral behavior is extremely instructive in light of the involvement of American military reservists in the recent Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq. Apparently normal human beings taking part in abberant behavior as a result of certain unusual circumstances, occurred in Nazi Germany and Japan during the war, in Pennsylvania during the post-war years, and now at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Although the physicians and scientists in this book were studying the effects of pharmacuticals on human beings, often with horrific results, this book is a fascinating study of the persons conducting the experiments and how they came to justify their actions.

This book clearly shows man's ability to use science for evil knows no bounds. What I truly don't understand is why none of the "testing" people are in prison.

A book you can't find anywhere else!

We are all aware of the nuclear experiments done during the cold war, right? Well insight shows from this book that many prisoners and people of lower social classes were experimental guinea pigs in the name of Modern Science. It is horrifying to read, and yet interesting at the same time. We also brought over experimental Nazi Doctors from the Holocaust to help the US Government on some experiments and were even given alias names to keep their identities and whereabouts secret. This is even happening today believe it or not, and it is horrifying to think what they have done during the Cold War, I come to think, what ... are they doing now? It's a scary thought!

Fluff

My god man. How much fluff can you put into one book. Mr. Hornblum, I have so much information to attain and so many books waiting on a list to be read that anything with useless time wasting fluff, aka long drawn out paragraphs, automatically goes on my "how not to write a book" list. I am sorry but your book made me more frustrated than enlightened, with all of your redundant repeats of what people said, told in eight differing ways, I am not sure if you thought the audience needed this much repeating or if you just needed to add a couple 20 pages to the final draft for appearances. But nonetheless I cannot sit and waste my precious time reading words of nothingness when there is an eternity of usefull information sitting out there waiting for me. *No arrogance intended, "I" as in us, humans.* I just don't see any excuse for this. Out of the 100% of book I would say there is about 25-35% of usefull concise information in it. Au Revoir`
