This book is a no-nonsense, common-sense approach to learning about which kind of acne you have, and then finding the most effective treatment options for YOU. The author wades through all the marketing hype and consults hundreds of doctors and dermatologists to give you accurate, unbiased information about a variety of OTC/prescription products and virtually all treatment options currently available. She describes the common level of effectiveness for each product and tells you how to use it correctly (you may be surprised! I myself had been using several products incorrectly). In the back of the book, there are several tables detailing the attributes of different acne products: active ingredient concentrations, pH levels, etc. One of the best things about this book is that the author understands what you're going through: to get rid of her own adult acne, she went to several different dermatologists and ended up taking Accutane. She knows your frustration.

The information I learned and applied from this book has made a huge difference in my complexion. And that in itself has changed my life. After 12 years of moderate acne, my skin has been consistently clear for five months (!), ever since I started one of the treatment plans recommended in this book. I'd be remiss not to mention that, over the past decade, I've tried the gamut of OTC and prescription acne treatments (Proactiv, Differin, Retin-A, Finacea, 2.5% and 10% benzoyl peroxide, 2% and 0.5% salicylic acid, sulfur, tea tree oil...), each individually, and all with negligible results.

Before reading this book, I had no idea that 5% benzoyl peroxide was even available. I had also never thought of using more than one product, and -- this is key -- using them at different times of the day. For me, 5% BPO and low-pH 2% salicylic acid are the magic pill, and they have completely changed my skin. Before, I just wasn't using them in the most effective way. (If you're curious, I use Ecco Bella's Leave-on Invisible Exfoliant & Blemish Remedy each morning and Earth Therapeutics' Clari-T Acne Serum ยบ5 at night.)

Good luck, Reader! Don't be embarrassed to check out this book from your local library (or buy it here on Amazon) -- your skin and your self-esteem are worth it.

I LOVED this book. Lydia uses tons of references and provides the reader with varying opinions on acne. She readily admits that there isn't one universal cure for acne and her research is extensive. I recommend this book to all of my clients who suffer from acne. There is a comprehensive bibliography as well where you can find books with more in-depth information.

After finding myself trying several OTC programs which didn't work, I stumbled across this book. I had no idea that I had been using BP all wrong! FYI, BP is not a spot treatment for pimples with white showing. I also had no idea that salicylic acid products had to be of a pH between 3 and 4 to be most effective. I wish the author would have tested more salicylic acid products for the appropriate pH. Only a couple of the ones she tested had the requisite pH. I would have much rather had a large list of products with the recommended pH than a large list of products without it. Also, I agree with a previous reviewer that pictures would be most helpful, especially in describing the formation of acne and what the different kinds of acne look like. Overall, I found that this book is a good introduction to the world of acne, but definitely not a place to stop learning.

I thought I knew something about acne...

Do you believe that if a product dries out your face, your skin will overcompensate by producing more oil? Do you think a special scrub can unplug your pores and help free you from blackheads? Or maybe you cherish the belief that you can sweat your pores clean of acne-causing dirt or toxins through vigorous exercise or steam treatments? If so, you need to read this book.

I have never realized how poorly I understood acne, and I am amazed how many myths I let myself absorb from "informative" commercials and advice given by well-intentioned editors of numerous women's magazines. I am immensely grateful to the author for teaching me what acne is - really and exactly - and for doing so in an accessible and friendly manner. Just the chapter "Understanding Acne" alone is worth the money I spent on this book, because it's hard to fight the condition without understanding it, and because it simply feels good to know for once what is going on with my skin.

Creative layout, encouraging information, thoughtfully presented easy reading. This book sheds positive light on a subject most women hate to aknowledge but are always seeking a sure cure for. The Cellulite Cure offers an indepth explaination of what cellulite is and why our bodies are producing it....and that its NOT OUR FAULT. Women who seek information on this subject should read this book before committing to surgery or other treatment because the good news is there is a potential cure which the author is an integral part of. By writing this book, Dr. Bissoon has made us privy to information on treatment that the weathly and beautiful have made discrete trips to Europe for- until now!! Dr. Bissoon has courageously brought the knowledge/discipline of Mesotheropy with him from France-and offers through this book and his practice a real possibility for many women to finally rid themselves of cellulite. The fact that there is a potential for real relief/cure from this unsightly and demoralizing condition is hopeful in and of itself. The fact that its attainable treatment now here in the U.S., in my opinion, makes it very worthy of exploration for any one who is watching their body go into "meltdown". Reading the book is the first step toward understanding what is actually happening to you and why -thus an empowerment tool toward making informed decissions about treatment.

If I had known that the purpose of this book was to sell MesoTherapy services, I would not have purchased it. The before and after photos look impressive. Having had first-hand experience with mesotherapy, it is my opinion that the results portrayed are not typical. Also, mesotherapy does not work well for people who have previously had liposuction. If you are interested in investing in mesotherapy, proceed with caution and be sure to obtain references that you can speak directly with. Do not rely on photos exclusively.

Dr. Bissoon's The Cellulite Cure has very good, scientific information on how and why 90% of women have cellulite. It is an easy read with lots of before and after photos and includes many ways to cure cellulite which the best is mesotherapy. I had an appointment with him and his assistant last week, and I cannot wait to have my first mesotherapy session later this summer. He is extremely friendly and professional and has a true passion for curing cellulite! I recommend his book as well as an appointment with him to all women who suffer from this terrible condition. Enjoy!

Here goes. I decided to try Smart Lipo as I heard it reduced fat, tightened skin and as a bonus helped with the overall appearance of Cellulite. That underlying problem for 90% of us women out there. After having a poor result and being left with a substantial amount of cellulite. I sought out the internet for help. After several hours I was referred to Dr. Lionel Bissoon's website. I sent their office an email and purchased the book. Within a few hours, honestly my prayers were answered. I have had opportunity to read the book and have started Dr. Bissoon's Mesotherapy treatments. Honestly, women you do not have to live another day with the low self-esteem and shame that we carry around with us when we don a bikini or heck even get intimate. I am amazed by the results!! Both from the enormous amount of information contained inside the book and most of all from Dr. Bissoon. YOU ARE MY MIRACLE! And I thank you. Natalie Moreno The Cellulite Cure (TM)

When I first got the book, I immediately flipped to the before & after pictures to see the results of past patients and I was surprisingly impressed of the changes within 2 treatments! I read thru the book and realized this was the best option for me because I hated the thought of surgery, anesthesia, recovery time, etc. I made an appt. to see Dr.Bissoon and he was very comforting & reassuring about the results I would see. I was skeptical about my first treatment but was amazed at my results after my 2nd visit! This was the best thing I did for my legs, tummy & love handles. I know I would have NEVER been able to see these results with plastic surgery. I highly recommend reading this book & visiting Dr. Bissoon! Good Luck!

from a veteran (and skeptical) acne battler

I have had acne since I was 12 (I am now 21), and I have to say that following the regimen prescribed in this book has made the most significant change in my skin in comparison to anything else I have tried, including more 'serious' approaches and medications such as accutane.

I'll be honest, using as much benzoyl peroxide as Dan recommends sucks, mostly because of the mild to moderate burning sensation and the dry skin that it leaves after applying the cream for about 20 minutes afterward. But it is worth it if you have struggled as much as I have with my moderate acne. According to Dan, the burning sensation is not that bad for most people, and I have found that after the initial few weeks on the regimen, the buring became more mild every day and easier to handle, as well as the dry skin. Benzoyl Peroxide also stains clothing a little, though I have not had much of a problem with it. It can also stain or bleach hair, but it is very minimal, and I have only experienced a few of my eyebrow hairs going from dark brown to blond, and even then it can only be noticed when scrutinizing them a few inces from a mirror.

I have found a couple of things that have helped: find a mild cleanser, really moisturizing lotion, and be as gentle with your skin as possible! (I like cetaphil, but experiment to find your own, and Dan sells his own 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream online for a great price. he is not out to make huge amounts of money like others claiming to cure acne, such as ProActiv!) The difference between this acne regimen and others, such as Proactiv, is essentially the amount of benzoyld peroxide cream used and the elimination of manual and chemical exfoliation with AHA/BHA or salicylic acid products. Dan recommends applying about an ounce of bp cream each time, while most systems recommend only about a dime sized amount. (trust me, this is a drastic change!)

He explains exactly the reasoning and how to follow his guidelines in the book, so please(!) follow Dan's advice! Another point to keep in mind is almost everything in this book is online at acne.org for free, so please check out the site and it's great recommendations first before ordering the book! While this book and Dan's regimen offer relief for most acne sufferers, this is not a cure for acne but a way to manage it on a daily basis, and once under control, acne will most likely reappear if you stop the regimen and doing exactly what Dan tells you to do.

With that said, this regimen has helped to keep my skin clearer than anything that I have tried. I have been on almost every acne medication that can be prescribed, including accutane, and while they helped clear my skin to a degree, you can't stay on drugs indefinitely, and once I stopped them my acne would either immediately or eventually reappear just as badly or worse than it was before I was on the medications. This system is what is helping me keep my skin under control on a long term basis without the side effects of oral drugs.

Dan's skin care regimen is the only thing that has worked for my acne - I tried everything from Proactiv to oral medications like Acutane. I've been caking on makeup for most of my life, since age 13, but now I finally can leave the house without it. Yes, I still break out a little before my monthly period, but otherwise, I'm all clear.
Dan Kern should win an award for his method, he is truly helping people, and not one of these Guthy Renker infomercial companies out for money. No celebrity endorsements needed; the clear skin regimen just works. I wish I had found it years ago.

Love.

Happily, Dan Kern is not a corporation looking for profit: he's just a guy who had bad skin and found a way to manage it. [...] I bought the book as a small thank you to Kern for being nice enough to provide the info for free. If you buy products thru his site, he gets a kick-back -- and if you don't, that's ok, too. For this reason, he deserves the support. Kind of like shareware for books. And his easy if not always fun regimen has been working so far, so kudos.

Best free information ever and best way I know to get rid of Acne.

I didn't read the whole book. I just went to web site acne.org and followed the program. Acne is now gone. I suffered from Acne for over 20 years and tried many treatment programs from Accutane, Retin-A, Microdermabrasion and a few others. Dan Kern's treatment program was the first treatment program that actually work for me in the long run.

The cheapest and fastest way I know how to check out the program is to order 1 tube of the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide (from Dan's Web Site) and try it for 1 week following Dan's instructions. Yes, if you goto the web site, Dan also wants you to get a Cleanser and a Moisturizer. All products are needed but I believe the key product is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel from his web site Acne.org.

I strongly believe if you have Ance, using the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel with Dan's instruction, you will have a 95% chance of seeing improvement in less than a week.

I bought this book about two years ago looking to make cold process soap. I've since pulled out this excellent reference to also make soap in my crock pot, and also was pleasantly suprised that it also covers liquid soaps. It covers all aspects to soapmaking that I can think of, from cold and hot process soaps using caustics, melt and pour soap, rebatching and hand milling, recommendations of where to buy soapmaking supplies, to creative ideas including different scents, botanicals, packaging, and imbedded items.

The book includes many photos in each chapter to explain each step in the soapmaking process. The explanations are in everyday language that makes this an excellent book for anyone starting out or wanting to learn a new way to make soap.

I've had my copy for over a year and I still refer to it. I have both of Alicia's books on soapmaking and they are horribly dog-eared and highlighted from much use.
Her instructions are simple but detailed so you know exactly what to expect. I've used her crockpot method for the last year and I adore making soap. I next wish to attempt cold process with Alicia's help.
I have no idea why such a well thought out book like this is now out of print. Stop wasting trees on romance novels.....people actually put the info in this book to good use!!!!

I am a veteran soapmaker and have a few books in my library on the subject. This is by far the best book I have on the subject. It's very easy to understand, and fun to read. I was surprised it didn't come up right away when I searched Amazon for soapmaking books. I particularly like the cold process recipes. It breaks down each recipe in different size batches, so you can choose how big a batch you want to make. The description of the beneficial properties of oils is great. It has everything there is to know about making cold process, hot process, hand milled soap, and melt and pour. This book makes it alot easier to create your own recipes eventually. The explanation of SAP values is alot easier to understand in this book than any other. I would have liked some more cold process recipes because the ones I've used have all turned out great. I would recommend this book highly if you are a beginner or an experienced soapmaker.

This is one of the best books on the subject

I have a habit of over reading when I tackle a new hobby, but soapmaking can be down right dangerous if you rush into it without knowing the proper order of ingredients and amounts to use. I really liked this book. I was on a waiting list for a local soapmaking class in my area, but the gal forgot to call me back, so I decided to read this book and I tackled soapmaking on my own. It is such a terrific and practical hobby. I now make soap for our face and bodies, I also make a shampoo bar, laundry soap, and even liquid soap from the soap scraps. Homemade soap also makes a wonderful and appreciated gift. Thanks Alicia for your contributions to the art of soap making!

This book is my first spa recipe book, if i could describe it in one word, it'd be wow. Just wow. The nail buffer that comes with it is soooo cool. I never new how to get rid of the ridges on my nails and make them shiney until i read this book and used the nail buffer. This book changed a part of my life! A biiiig part. It even comes with pumic! The miracle of this rock is fantastic, it removes dead skin cells(doesn't hurt a bit) Though i should tell you, it may be kind of a challenge to find rosewater and citric acid. (i havent found it yet but i just got this book 2 days ago.) Anyway, EXCELLENT PRODUCT! a must-have for spa lovers or people who are really tense.

The Body Book is my favorite book of all, though. It has tons of recepies for your skin, hair, face, hands, nails, and feet. All the ingredients I have tried so far have made a signifant difference after I tried them! The book includes three essensial oil bottles, a shower cap, tools for your nails, a foot scrub, and a face brush. The pictures in the book are beautiful as well, which makes it all the more worthwile to read. Who would I suggest this book to? Girls 12 and up, teenage girls would especially love it, but I'm sure many women would too! It makes a great gift!

The book is well written and unlike most books I've read, incorporates a multifaceted approach to self improvement. It teaches us to love appreciate and ourselves unconditionally, celebrating our beauty both inside and out. I disagree, however, with some of the advice found in the last chapter of the book on "spiritual power". Although the tips are well-intended, I believe they strayed too far in the religious direction. According to this book, one must know that God's "a given" and the truth that "We are all connected to the omnipotent, omnipresence called the Creator." In my opinion, this book could have remained more secular in this respect.

The book is so easy to read - simple to understand and effortless to apply the concepts contained therein to one's own life. This is a book that would be perfect for anyone. Valerie Ramsey understands the true wisdom of beauty--that even though it is outwardly visible, its true source comes from within. Perhaps that is why all treatise on beauty should be written from the perspective of someone, like Ramsey, who has lived a life that allows for true beauty to flourish. Aging is bounded by time, beauty is not. And so, Ramsey, in prose that is clean, compelling, and--most of all--entirtely applicable, demonstrates what is so obvious and yet, for our youth obsessed world, often overlooked in terms of how to cultivate beauty, grace, and soulfulness throughout our lives.

I found this book to be so easy to read with practical useful advice on creating a life that you want. It was inspirational at the same time, making me reaffirm my beliefs that one can accomplish whatever one puts one's mind to. I have passed this on to my mother and recommended to my girlfriends and aunts, but the over-riding message of this book is applicable to both genders. Worth the read. I took away tips to apply in daily life as well as future planning/dreaming.

Mr. Schoon has greatly expounded upon his first edition of this excellent text. Content has nearly doubled, and he has included not only standard topics such as nail anatomy, adhesives, and product chemistry (which are vital for any nail technician to understand), but he has also added chapters such as "The Safe Salon" and "The Healthy Salon," among others. This new text includes great color photos. This text, set in a story format, includes a "Fast Track" which highlights the important facts of each chapter, as well as "Review Questions." Mr. Schoon's down-to-earth writing makes the most intimidating topics easy to understand. This book is an outstanding resource for nail technician and instructor.

Noted as "extraordinary" by the author Tee A. Corinne in her book `Courting Pleasure' and as `...exquisite, memorable erotic work...".

This was the most intense reading I have done in a long time. This should be recommended reading in all colleges and universities.

Tremendous titles from the author are - Bastard Out of Carolina, Trash, and The Women Who Hate Me. More information can be found at the author's web page dorothyallison dot net

From the back of the book - A compelling collection of essays, autobiographical narratives, and performance pieces combines updated versions of earlier groundbreaking material with provocative new work. The author probes her experience of being a lifelong feminist activist, controversial sex radical, and a Southern expatriate writer with an attitude.. With humor, passion and enormous conviction, she addresses what it means to be queer and happy about it in a world that is still arguing about what it means to be queer.

Fabulous!

"Skin" is a book of essays by the amazingly talented writer and activist, Dorothy Allison. I remember reading [...] Out of Carolina many years ago and thinking I might not get through it because of its gruesome and hideous portrayal of a poverty-stricken, incestuous family living in the South. Turns out that book was Allison's fictionalized account of her childhood. Skin, however, is a finely crafted series of essays with titles ranging from "Gun Crazy" to "The Theory and Practice of the Strap-on Dildo" to "Believing in Literature". She likes to talk about everything people aren't supposed to talk about, including masturbating to science fiction novels, the pain of catching a venereal disease from her stepfather when she was a child (a disease that went untreated, rendering her sterile), the thrill of S & M, butch/femme strap-on sex, and much more just as juicy. Allison's style is fearlessly intimate and unashamed. Her long struggle to escape poverty and find a voice is evident in every page, and in every page her voice is beautiful, loud, and resiliant.

An opportunity to get thinking about a few "difficult" subjects, while enjoying a few refreshing lines of thought as well as a no-nonense yet witty style.Being a woman, gay or poor not a requisite, although it might help. If you're neither of the three, buy the book anyway, you might learn something (I did).

Words flew off the page and wrapped around my soul.

Not since Andrea Dworkin's "Woman Hating" (that I read in 1978) have I been so moved by the truth of another writer that I would want to emulate it. In sharing Harris's vision of writing as an "uncompromising revolutionary act" the point is made that the mainstream literary world as well as the "so-called avant-garde and burgeoning feminist critical aristocracy" will not appreciate the lesbian writer who "refuses to obey the rules." To both women, nothing is more important than telling the truth, "refusing all categories, all who would shape your writing to their own use."

"Yes!" I cried, " The End.

The extraordinary Dorothy Allison can write fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and essays. Skin is her contribution to the essay genre, a collection of two dozen bits of astute rambling across a crazy quilt of subjects stitched together by the fierce honesty her readers have come to expect from all of her writing. Coming from a poor white trash family in South Carolina, she traveled beyond her origins thanks to a rampant intelligence that nothing could dull. A feminist before the word was invented, Allison is also a proud card-carrying lesbian, a writer, mentor, teacher, lecturer, and a woman who is always generous to other writers. Skin deals more explicitly and in greater depth with erotica and sexuality than her other works, so readers would do well to be forewarned. But if you're a Dorothy Allison fan, this is NOT a book to be missed.

"Smart" is the word for this accurate, balanced dermatology guide that presents both traditional therapies and alternative medicine choices. Written for health care professionals, yet suitable for individuals who want to take charge of their own health, this is an excellent resource for skin care.

Smart Medicine for Your Skin is immediately useful and accessible. As a family doctor, I refer to it frequently for conventional allopathic treatment modalities. What I like most however, is that it gives me multiple alternative therapies that I can review with patients. The explanations are easy to understand and my patients like to have choices.

As a bonus, the reference section provides in-depth resources for further explanations, classified by condition. This section also provides helpful listings of manufacturers, publishers and organizations all easily accessible within the framework of this one book. It belongs on my bookshelf and I recommend it for yours.
