Carmela Hayslett, 19 year old Philadelphia native, has been dreaming of publishing a book since she was only five years old. After years of writing schools, brain-storming, and excessive writer's block, she releases "Big Boots and Black Hair Dye" a compilation of her best short stories, poems, and personal essays all in their raw form.

The stories cover varies genres: Action Adventure (The Young Wolfpack), Children's Humor (The Lemon Kids), Gothic Prose (Smith's Mausoleum), Metaphysical (Motorcycle Dreams), Young-adult Humor (Her Name is Dolly), and Fantasy (Mend My Heart). You will also find written commentaries for some of the short stories and what inspired her to write them. Most of her stories and poetry were based on real events in her life with a fictional twist!

Her poetry are mostly of death and heart break, but also there some about domestic abuse, drunk driving, and even some humerous poems. Carmela Hayslett touches on real subjects.

With this book, Carmela donates half of her proceeds she makes directly to literacy foundations and charities. Two thumbs up! Way up!

I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages. While reading the many short stories you may find yourself laughing or crying or saying "that's me!". While reading the poetry be sure to have a box of tissues handy because this author reaches so far down into the well of heartache and loss, love and triumph that you will surely be touched and may find yourself reduced to tears...as was I. While reading Carmela's personal writings, you will find yourself either agreeing with her (as I did) or you will find yourself ready to wage war in a debate with her. It just proves she has certainly done her job well to make the readers think.

I sent this book to my niece and she just loved it. She's old enough to read it to herself, and when I asked her about it she took great pains to let me know why the step-sisters were mean and what was really important in the story (and in life). A fun read with a wonderful message woven into it.

Cindy Big Hair is a fairy tale about a little girl who wants to win the trophy for Biggest Hair at the Big Hair Ball. Her stepsisters always win the trophy year after year, but this year, Cindy's Hairy Godmother arrives to give her the biggest hair. However, in the end, it's Cindy's big heart that wins her the trophy. This is an awesome children's book - very funny, with colorful illustrations. Highly recommended!

Some friends of mine have a young daughter who absolutely loves this book. I've probably read it to her a half-dozen times already. She loves princesses, and since this is based on Cinderella, it qualifies. It's a good story with fun, colorful art, and the Hairy Godmother is fun to read. Definitely recommended.

This book is funny and smart. The art work is amazing... true art work rather than just some drawings slapped into a book. My kid giggles and cackles every time I read the words "SLURP... SLURP"... as I pretend I lick em'!
SHort enough to keep a kid's attention... yet long enough to unwind with your little rugrat. Great bedtime or anytime book. This one is my kid's favorite... and age appropriate for anyone! A must-have for all kid's libraries... and a great gift! I've bought one for every baby shower i've been invited to!

What a sweet book! I read it to my son and he loved the pictures as well as the story. I bought several copies to give to his Preschool teachers as "end of the year gifts" and they too raved about the book. They especially liked the "right amount of words" for the younger reader. I'm glad to have it in my collection. I bought a few more to give for future gifts too!

I being a breast cancer survivor, two years now,was not sure how I would handle reading this book. Let me tell you.....every person who has dealt with cancer shd pick this up and read it.You will not put it down until you are done. For those like myself, you will relate to at least one story if not all. You will get filled up, remember things you had forgotten or put out of your mind , and you will laugh and smile. For people who have not had cancer but know someone who has you will understand a little better the daily worries and feelings we have which may help explain our sometimes mood swings etc. I am so proud of the work Lesley Daley put into this to help people handle or understand the situation when faced with it. She and the incredible women did a tastefull and awesome job expressing very private feelings through such beautiful photos and stories.

H if for Hair Fairy is a humerous and creative approach to a delicate topic. This book uses an alphabetic approach to teaching about things related to cancer. The Fairies appear throughout the book, giving tidbits of fun, things to try, and positive support. It is approriate for any age, any person facing cancer. I have not seen many books that can educate about cancer, that still leave you feeling good in the end. I highly reccommend this book!

I'll never forget the during freshman year when the entire band was called down to hear from a nurse from the pediatric oncology unit at St. Vincent's hospital. We were all there because on of our band members and friends, Andrea Martin, had been diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer after having a rib removed the summer before. That day I was not only introduced to the specifics of Andrea's case, I was also introduced to a book her mother, Kim, and her had been creating together to help get them through that time in their lives. After losing one child to cancer years before, the Martin's certainly know the physical and emotional pain that cancer causes not only the patient but their family. This is an amazingly uplifting and encouraging books, that not only helps cancer patients feel less scared and confused, but also lets them see their condition just as something to deal with and not worry about. Adorable illustrations and great writing help bring the message of the story of the Hair Fairies to life. I reccomend this book to anyone, young and old, who is dealing with cancer or knows someone who has been affected by it.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family suffers. Everyone needs help. This darling book is designed to explain unfamiliar words, concepts and treatment that children and parents may encounter for the first time. Two of the author's children have undergone treatment for cancer. Her compassionate, light-hearted, yet knowledgeable attitude comes through on every page. The cheerful illustrations hold the attention of little ones. Having seen first-hand the benefit this book can be to a family dealing with childhood cancer, I can highly recommend "H is for Hair Fairy".

This is an ideal gift for a child to help them understand the treatment of the disease is more than just suffering through it. It provides support for providers of care.

My 11 year old daughter suffers from Trich, and we recently began working with Dr. Penzel. We can't say enough about how knowledgable he is, caring, and what a calming affect he has on the parent. We are frustrated with how difficult this is to treat in a young child, but hopeful that with Dr. Penzel's help, we can manage and overcome it.

This book was educational and informative, listing a variety of options and avenues for the possible treatment of Trichotillomania. As a trich patient, I only wish this research and information was available to my parents and myself 36 years ago when I began pulling. Never too late, however, as the behavior modification suggestions and possible medication treatments listed and explored have already started me on my road to controlling my urges and actions. A must read for anyone who may suffer from this disorder, or his or her parent.

Best book I have read on the subject

Review Date: 2006-10-25
My six year old daughter has been dealing with trich for several months now, and I have read a ton of books and internet sites. Dr. Penzel's book is the most comprehensive and helpful. Despite having only one chapter relating specifically to children, it is an extremely helpful one and the rest of the book is very informative about the disorder in general as well. His suggestions for motivating younger children have been particularly valuable to us. His advice to and compassion for parents of children with trich has been a lifeline for me-whenever I feel hopeless or that I am losing patience I go back and re-read it and it helps me a lot. I can't say this book or anything else has gotten trich under control for us yet (as Dr. Penzel explains, treatment can be difficult with such a young child), but it has definitely given us hope and gone a long way in helping us to cope with the disorder ourselves and not make things worse for our child.

As far as adults go, I don't have trich so I can't really speak to how helpful it would be for adults who do, but I will say that this is the only book I have read that offers lots of actual specific, practical advice in every area from treatment options to medications to diets, supplements and alternative therapies in an non-biased, factually-based manner. It is certainly the only book I have read that lays out a detailed, specific self-treatment plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with this difficult disorder.

This is a truely charming book. The whole issue of hair--combing, cutting, etc--was very upsetting to me when I was a small child, and I understand from Moms I work with, it continues to be "one of those kid things!" I bought this book last week as my goddaughter (5 years old) and I browsed the children's section of our local bookstore. We were initially captivated by the excellent cover illustration, but found the fun, rhyming verse inside to be just as appealing. The young heroine (Hattie), after much resistance, not only finally agrees to get her hair cut, but decides to donate it. At her hairdresser's suggestion, she proudly sends her shorn locks to the "Locks Of Love" organization to be used to create a wig for another child who needs it. A positive lesson for young children in helping others. My goddaughter loves the book and has reread it several times in the last few days (with some adult help).

My 2 & 4 year old kids were quite happy to discover a new book waiting for them after naptime. Hattie has become my 4 year old daughter's favorite book. The illustrations are adorable. The rhymes are cute. My daughter has begun repeating some of Hattie's phrases, and never fails to ask questions about the illustrations, like why there are animals in Hattie's hair during the dream. She loves seeing Hattie's new haircut and wants me to cut her hair the same way (fortunately she doesn't have a haircut phobia, though her hair doesn't grow fast enough to warrant many cuts herself).

Even my 2 year old son sits through the entire reading, staring intently at the page - unusual for a boy that age! As an adult, I can appreciate the story and don't (yet) mind reading it several times a day.

I don't know a single child who isn't afraid of his/her first haircut. Hattie Get A Haircut takes children on a magical adventure to a land where long hair causes many mishaps and attracts the strangest things, like nesting birds. In the end, Hattie not only gets her hair cut, but she found out it wasn't as scarey as she once thought. A bonus to the book is the fact that Hattie's stuffed bear mimicks Hattie's facial expressions, which makes it a fun way to turn this book into an interactive adventure as you and your child not only look for the bear throughout the book, but mimick Hattie as well.

Ida Claire comes to life through the delightful illustrations of Sunny Dai. The accomplished storyteller/author, Louis Rowles, creates a story of human character in this promising children's book. Valuing one's self as a worthy person, one of life's most important lessons, is the underlying theme to be gleaned through Ida Claire's adventure.

Through ear pleasing rhyme and informative vocabulary, the reader follows Ida's quest for popularity with the town's folk. Only through being herself does Ida find true happiness. What better way to teach young people about acceptance in today's seemingly foreboding world?

Great book for fostering phonemic awareness in preschool children and teaching the literary element of theme to students of all ages. A must for character education instruction!

Definitely a 5 star book whose popularity is sure to rival the classics of old.

Anyone who has AA or loves someone with this condition will benefit from this book! Not only does it have up to date information about the condition, treatments, wigs and concealment strategies, but it is so funny. Sometimes it can be very hard to laugh about this condition; it robs you of part of your identity. This book does it, beautifully!
Not only did this book make me laugh out loud, but it validated many of the feelings I had when first afflicted with this condition. For women especially, this condition can be very isolating. If you have Alopecia, or love someone who does, buy her this book!

What's on one's head seems to matter a lot to a lot of people in the world. "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing" is a guide for sufferers of AA, also known as Alopecia Aretea, to cope with their disorder. The disorder, not well known to the public, causes hair loss all over one's body - most importantly, the head. With a focus on women sufferers, although men can have it as well and could benefit from the advice within, she tells her story about dealing with it all, including the annoyances of wigs, covering it up, and how to deal with people finding out that you're a bald woman, a look that hasn't been accepted in modern society. "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing" is a fresh and inspiring look at dealing with a disorder that shouldn't be anymore than what it is - a mild annoyance.

Any woman who is hair-challenged, in any way, should read this book as the words Leslie Ann writes will inspire and you might even want to run out and purchase a fabulous hair piece, wig or any other hair enhancer. I am not hair-challenged but I thought her words could apply to many other medical challenges - deal with the cards you are dealt and discover a way not to feel like a victim. Leslie Ann is a living example of what she writes: Love your life and it will love you back.

Never before has she laughed so much about alopecia. What a wonderful gift you have given my daughter, helping her see a lighter side to alopecia. I cannot thank you enough for that.

Losing one's hair is probably high on the "disaster" list for most people, and I would imagine even higher for women than for men. That is why I found it so surprising - in the best possible way - that the cover of Leslie Ann Butler's " If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is so cheerful looking and so attractive. Looking at the cover illustration one cannot help but feel joyful and uplifted; having said that, I need to add that the author's artwork, included throughout the book, lends a similar upbeat, positive tone to the entire book and makes it visually extremely appealing.

Leslie Ann Butler wrote a tremendously important and impactful book for people suffering from the auto-immune disorder called alopecia areata, which affects nearly five million people in USA. Having been affected herself - and with the most severe form of it, leading her to lose all of her hair everywhere - she is in the position to be not only highly informative, but also highly personal and compassionate in her writing. The book stays upbeat, giving hope - but not false hope! She offers advice for just about any "sticky" situation a person with alopecia areata might find her- or himself in.

The opening chapters deal with the facts about this immune disorder - what it is, what could possibly cause it (nobody really knows...) and what could help alleviate it. Later chapters deal with the day-to-day living with alopecia areata - when and whom to tell about it, how to deal with your hair loss in different "extreme" situations (think sports and sex...), how to travel with wigs, how to choose the right wig and how to deal with loss of eyebrows and eyelashes as well as what your options are in such situations.

The last few chapters, while still practical, really deal with this condition from the psychological perspective, helping one accept the hair loss and coping with it in a positive fashion, as well as even finding some positive aspects in it. No more bad hair days, anybody? How about not having to pluck those pesky stray facial hairs ever again?

The Resources section at the very end of the book should prove to be an invaluable selection of contact information for both the general information about the disorder and sources for wigs and other items the alopecia areata sufferers might need or want.

Warm, upbeat, but first and foremost realistic and informative, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" by Leslie Ann Butler, would benefit anybody with alopecia areata or anybody who in any way cares for or about somebody with it. Gorgeous illustrations turn it into a work of art and the written part turns it into a very valuable resource and a deeply wise work.

Historical perspective from Madame Curie, Sonya Kovelvsky to Doris

Doris's mother was inspired by Madame Curie and the Russian mathematician Sonya Kovalevsky to urge Doris on to great achievement (also including marrying rich). Doris did not marry rich, but went on to great achievement in America -- including helping a husband (Peter Drucker) to become a world-renowned management expert. Mother had opposed the marriage and much else. Doris succeeded in spite of her mother and Hitler, who made life impossible for the Druckers in Germany.

I began reading Doris Drucker's book, thinking I would see if I enjoyed it. I did not put it down until I finished it. Wow . My son picked it up and had the same reaction. It is a fascinating portrait of a moment and place in time. I felt I was there, in her aristocratic setting watching the details of Germany and England in the 30s; and then to see America in the 40s and 50s through her eyes was entertaining. I often found myself laughing with her incredible sense of humor.

Doris Drucker's autobiography gives us the sharpest possible sense of social change from old Europe to modern America. Her aristocratic mother's daily, and Sunday, authority over and care of her household staff reached across a class line drawn more precisely with far greater subtlety than that between a Scarlett O'Hara and her black maid. Mrs. Drucker's understanding of domestic work and working rules is sharpened by her cosmopolitan insight over the most stable region of Germany on the one hand and the most inventive regions of California. An expert in patent law who holds patents on her own inventions, Doris Drucker's vigorous life(tennis three times a week) and her large family of gifted daughters and a son provide her with intimate outposts for comparing today's world of radical change with her childhood in which human fences were firm as stone walls.

Not only is the account of the author's peripatetic life absolutely engrossing, her use of language delights throughout. The story is told with the feistiness and sly humor of a survivor-- I cheered for her all the way. Despite her deceptively simple style, the author has the guts to use vocabulary mere mortals only read about ( morganatic wives anyone?) A real treat for biography lovers!

A rare and welcome memoir

Doris Drucker's memoir chronicles a life whose early years were framed by war but whose concerns were those of most young German women her age--school, dating, and, in her case, establishing her independence from a contolling family and social structure. Beautifully written, economical but also eloquent in expression, the book moves at a brisk pace, rewarding the reader with deft and witty observations and reminding us that even during the most tumultuous periods of history, daily life somehow goes on. Drucker is an extraordinary woman who, one guesses, would scoff at such a thought. Her story is told with care but wholly without the sentimentality and pretentious self-indulgence that so often plague the genre. Her mother (one of whose early admonitions became the book's title) is a character of epic proportions, and this relationship provides some of the book's most heatbreaking, and also most hilarious, moments. Drucker's is that rare memoir that sheds light on a society and historical period while never losing its highly personal, indeed idiosyncratic, individuality. This is a fascinating and wonderfully rewarding book.
