I am currently using this book in an inquiry project within one of my Teacher Education Classes. It gave a wonderful description of how hair grows, and why hair is either straight or curly. Also has some neat experiments!

The book is educational, amusing (not hilarious)and features a clever story punctuated by timeless illustrations. Written from a worm's perspective, the story clears up misconceptions about the natural world.

In the book, Larson points out that a felled tree is a boon to the environment although it may, at first blush, seem a loss to humankind. My five year old may understand that nature reclaims all things living but if the tree that holds his swing falls down he will grieve the loss and have difficulty appreciating the upside to this natural occurence. Death is the naturaI conclusion to life but I don't think anyone should be expected to view it so clinically. Feelings persist.

The Thyroid Paradox: How to Get the Best Care for Hypothyroidism This book is very easy to read and understand. He gives the information you need to know. Especially if you think you make have a thyroid problem. I believe I have a thyroid problem and after reading his book I'm almost positive. I have actually scheduled an appointment with him in Oct. 2007. I believe I have now been able to find a doctor that believes there is something wrong and is willing to treat me. A really good read for those that have been told they don't have a thyroid problem.

I didn't really know what to expect from a book on this subject, but I was amazed by the insight that the book offers. As someone who has suffered from Trich for 6 years, I found the book to be tremendously useful. A must have for anyone interested in the disorder.

I thought the book had good ideas with adequate instructions - especially for someone who wears a ponytail almost everday. I feel inspired to start doing my hair more often. The illustrations could have been a little better, but I was mostly satisfied with this book. I'm going to order one for a friend.

This is the story of Barcelona Smith, a boy with wild blue hair that has a very tame personality, never taking risks, exposing himself to germs, or having any fun! One humid day, his hair goes out of control, resulting in Barcelona Smith going out of control as well and doing all the fun and "risky" stuff he had never tried.

The story itself, as well as the illustrations are witty and charming. I loved the description of activities Barcelona felt were too risky such as smelling roses, playing on playgrounds, or having a pet. Children will find this book really funny and will get a kick out of Barcelona's wacky hair.

What on Earth Is an Atheist

This is a collection of transcripts from the original broadcasts of Madalyn O'Hair's brief radio show from the late 1960's. That said, one must keep in mind the general mentallity of the era and opposition to this type of program. It follows that the information conveyed needed to be as compressed as possible, so the topics could not go into too much detail, but the lack of a cross-reference is disappointing. Also, the challenges to the "establishment" could sometimes seem a bit extreem in some of her claims which is why I only give it four stars instead of five. Otherwise it is refreshing to read from someone, like Michael Crichton, who actually did her homework to support her position and encourages others to question even her own claims (a bibliography is provided but, unfortunately, outdated). Unlike another excellent book "Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches" by Marvin Harris, which covers some of the same themes, the plus of not going into too much detail is that you get more "factoids" that, if true, are sometimes entertaining and sometimes even infuriating, but always interesting. The format of the book makes it nice for "reading on the go". All things said, Madalyn O'Hair did an outstanding job of explaining what on Earth an atheist really is.

I haven't finished this book yet, but I think it's important to review this book at this time because I think there are probably a lot of people out there who, like me, started reading this book and put it down because their current beliefs about Trichotillomania were challenged and it made them uncomfortable. It made me uncomfortable too.

But you need to keep reading the book. Is Rohrer right? Is Trich all in our head? You know what....what if she is?!?! What if our current beliefs are directly responsible for this endless cycle of pulling, guilt, shame, and more pulling? Are we so determined to close our minds to this idea that we're willing to risk freedom? I don't know if I'll end my pulling forever if I continue reading this book and following the exercises. What I do know is that it has challenged me the way nothing else has. And I think our natural resistance to challenge and change is indicative of the reasons so many of us are still asking the same questions and still making very little progress. Throw rocks at me if you want, but you owe it to yourself to take a deep look inside and figure out what it is that's really eating at you. Even if it turns out this theory doesn't work for you, I bet you'll make significant strides in getting to know yourself better. And you can only benefit from that.

The book is a comfortable read. Rohrer is a peer, and addresses you as such. The first few pages were difficult for me because of my natural resistence to "self-help" books, but the content itself is not difficult. The challenge it presents is purely emotional, and will vary depending on your own level of willingness to participate in your own healing.

The interesting thing about the Trich community is that we will try almost anything to find a "cure" for Trichotillomania. Some of us try medication. Some try therapy. Some try special diets. Some try habit reversal. Do these things work? Sure, to some extent. But inside you is a person who desperately needs to pull, and tells you so almost every day. Have you ever sat down with her and asked her why? Rohrer does.

I liked the book it is a small book with ancient history of atheism and it has an explanation of materialism that is important for people to understand. Madalyn writes well and this small book is a nice addition to your atheist library.

Schow's right on target
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Composed primarily of pieces from Ares (circa 1981 through 1984) and Fangoria (his fondly remembered "Raving and Drooling" columns, circa 1992 to 1996), Wild Hairs provides ample proof that David Schow's non-fiction is as well crafted, entertaining and provocative as his fiction. Well informed and highly opinionated, often laugh out loud funny, Schow covers a plethora of topics, including the MPAA rating system, the Outer Limits, garage kits, and the works of the sadly neglected Gerald Kersh. The highlight of the collection, however, is a handful of insightful, often scathing columns on the horror genre and writing itself. Old timers and newcomers alike should read and absorb the timeless lessons Schow has to teach on stupid questions ("Stupid Horror Question Tricks"), the state of horror ("Horror Rises From the Grave...Again!), tired plot elements ("The Horror Book of Cliches"), and anthologies ("The Big Dos Equis"). Also noteworthy are pieces on blurbs ("Insert Blurb Here," containing the true story of Stephen King's "I have seen the future of horror" quote re: Clive Barker's Books of Blood) conventions ("Con-Dumb"), writing ("Symps"), creators (pieces on Joe R. Lansdale, Richard Christian Matheson and Frank Darabont) and editors ("Living Dead at the Westchester Morgue). Hopefully, you won't recognize yourself in any of the more vitriolic pieces. If you do, however, take two aspirin and call Dr. Schow in the morning--he'll fix you up right quick.
