A Fun Read

This is a fun piece of creative writing. I loved the descriptions of the three hair stylists. This is only the second time that I have found myself routing for a male model (the first being Zoolander). The plot twists kept me turning pages, and the ending left me simultaneously horrified, angry, and amused. Fasstastic!

A charming tale of the young woman Clara and her decision to persist in the endless and tiresome task of brushing her hair, Clara's Gift From The Heart by Mary Douglas is illustrated by Lisa Victoria. Deftly carrying young readers through the creatively original picturebook story, Clara's Gift From The Heart tells of the creatures which soon inhabit Clara's hair as she must build up her courage to finally brush her disgusting hair. With the inclusion of a fun collection of intriguing characters, Clara's Gift From The Heart is very highly recommended reading for children ages 5 to 8 searching for an entertaining, exciting, and encouraging tale of courage, friendship, and faithfulness.

What a deal: a book and a game in one!

Excellent present for kids who like to be scared A LITTLE BIT and laugh A LOT. In this story, the classroom's pet hamster escapes her cage and tags along when the kids go on a field trip to a bizarre museum. The class, of course, never figures out that it's Tootsie the Hamster who's looking at them through a painting's eyes or pinching them from within a suit of armor. Class Trip is classic kid humor with great, imaginative illustrations. (Picture a hamster in rock-climber's gear and you've got Tootsie!) Book also has a "Spooky Musuem Tour" game in the back cover and a built-in game spinner shaped like-who else?-Tootsie!

BOOK REVIEW
A reference/collector-book, the Comb, Its History and Development, by Jen Cruse, ISBN 0709081375, published by Robert Hale, London, first edition, was released November 30, 2007.
Cruse's years of dedication to collecting and researching brings this
major new collector reference book to life. It is said to be the first comprehensive study, in the English language, dealing in-depth with ornamental combs and hairpins from around the world. Jen Cruse is a writer for the Antique Comb Collector, the newsletter of the Antique Comb Collectors Club International.

Combs illustrated, as well as those from antiquity, are from Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Artists who designed combs worked in France, Great Britain, Scandinavia and many other countries. The variety of goods that combs are made from spans sources of carved ancient bone and antler -to ivory and solid gold, a host of other materials - and in modern times from contemporary plastics. From the first, they were carved from such materials as tortoise shell, horn, vulcanite and mother of pearl.
Most were popularly worn between 1870 and 1930. The history of the ornamental comb unfolds --tooth and prong, following fashion's trends and creating trends of design and style in line with discoveries found in graves and tombs.
Since 4,000 BC, combs have an important place in the belongings and in the grooming of both men and women.
Combmaking, tools, tips for collector on cleaning and caring for various materials, how to discover fakes and forgeries can save real money for a beginning or expert antique comb or jewelry collector, museum or historical society curator. Those who love beautiful books will enjoy this fascinating book.
Nine chapters, nine-page index, 272 pages, more than 500 color and black and white images - sketches, photos, drawings to help explain comb vernacular. Printed on fine paper, fabric-hard cover, smart dust jacket.

Written from the point of view of the collector this book gives an excellent historical review of combs and hair ornaments of all types and styles. Not only precious stone and diamond items are covered but those made from more humble and available materials like turtle-shell, ivory, coral and gilt metal. The author goes into a great deal of detail about social facts, history and etiquette which lay behind the development of different styles of ornaments. There is also information on collecting and looking after these ornaments.

This book offers insights into the structure and function of various skn and hair conditioning agents. It is of interest to the formulator of cosmetic products, or to sophisticated consumers wanting a better understanding about products they buy. This book should also be of interest to textile formulators, since many of the same products can be transferred over into the textile market. Good addition to technical library.
