The Perfect Introduction to Beardsley's Life and Work

A quick read, and packed with wonderful photographs and drawings, this book is a great treat for the new Beardsley fan. This book re-opened my eyes to his work, and broadened my horizons, as to who he was, and the life that he led. In other words, it laid the foundation for my further studies of Aubrey Beardsley, and his artistic contribution to the world.
The information is thorough and accurate, and the images are a joy to behold - so much so, in fact, that I purchased a second copy for the sole purpose of cutting out and framing them, for hanging in my drawing studio. Also, the brief nature of the book is helpful, in that it doesn't require the reader to commit, as is necessary for a longer biography. It serves as an ideal introduction. I would strongly recommend it, however, to both those who have just discovered Beardsley, and those who have long loved Beardsley's work.

Beautiful British model, Adele Marriot, is so tired of riding the diet and exercise treadmill, and when a handsome young doctor offers her free surgery that will keep her beautiful and thin for the rest of her life, she jumps at the chance. However, something strange and sinister is going on at Dr. Stefan Soivak's mountain clinic. But, it is far too late for Adele to back out now! It seems that the clinic's patients are mostly vampires, whom the good doctor can surgically cure by switching their vampirism to another unfortunate...for a price.
And now, a horrified Adele turns to the only man she hears can help her, Barnabas Collins. Barnabas is willing to help her, but it seems that someone is on her trail, someone who will stop at nothing to make sure that her transformation is permanent. And soon Adele and Barnabas, joined by his charming but hunted cousin Quentin, are playing a game that could mean destruction for all of them!
Canadian author Dan Ross, under the pseudonym of Marilyn Ross, wrote this suspenseful, Gothic horror story, along with 31 other Dark Shadows novels. These novels were based on the American television show Dark Shadows (1966-71), but as they were written at the same time as the show was unfolding, there are some discrepancies between the books and the show. In spite of that, though, Ross's characters are wonderfully fleshed out, and story itself is absolutely gripping - and romantic.
So, if you are a fan of Gothic horror, you will like this book very much. If you are a fan of Dark Shadows you will absolutely *love* this book. (I did.) I highly recommend this book!

This book brings ancient Roman baths to life.

Fikret Yegul makes the assertion that baths and bathing in the ancient Roman world were an integral part of daily life for a multitude of reasons: social activity, hygenic and intellectual. It was not uncommon for baths to contain reading rooms, lecture rooms and libraries. The baths helped to unite the Roman world in a unique fashion. These structures were adaptable to various cultural settings and tastes. Consequently the habit spread from one end of the Roman world to the next. In the west there was remarkable experimentation with design, shapes and planning. This book makes the Roman day make sense and sheds new light on the intellectual leanings of the Romans.
Bene lava a Roman would say while scurrying off to the bath. Fikret informs us that a Roman would refresh not only their body with waters of different temperatures, steam rooms and massage rooms but also their mind. Bathe a Roman would do at least once a day. At the bath an ordinary Roman would experience a variety of opportunities: a dip in a cold pool, immersion in a tepid pool or in a hot pool or even spend time in a steam room. All the while there were opportunities to watch roving jugglers, short skits or poetry readings in a lecture hall. Roving vendors for food and bath supplies wandered about. There were parks and libraries in the large baths. Plenty of room and places for peace and quiet to read, relax and discuss. There were exercise grounds for mild or strenuous exercise. Some teachers held class at the baths. Not only were the baths designed with places suitable for teaching but rooms such as that for the cold pool (frigidarium) had displays of famous sculpture. In the bath complex of Agrippa there were 300 plus statues throughout. Elaborate fountains sent water cascading over statuary and fine, rare marbles. The baths were not religious centers; these were open to all; a place to refresh, relax and restore the intellect and body: mens sana in corpore sano.
A temple complex required certain adherence to time honored rules of design. This was not so with the baths. Thus these became places for experimentation and creativity. Vaults and domes reigned supreme. It is as though some architects took paper in hand, grabbed a compass and began experimenting. Imagine a building as a very large rectangle divided up into several very large rooms. A roman architect would with compass and ruler in hand break up that building into pieces, make each room a dome or an octagonal room or a vaulted room of varying lengths, size and height. Then each of these new buildings he would rearrange into an intelligent and visually appealing pattern which would enhance the bathing experience. And accommodate more efficiently larger numbers of people than the original large rectangular building.
Fikret discusses with clarity all of these issues. He also covers attitudes toward baths, bathing morality and a wide range of issues.

Having been involved in bears and photography for the past twenty years, I found this book to be a magnificent synopsis of these great creatures. Dan Cox's photography allows you to become so close as to be intimate with some of Mother Nature's finest work. The images are truly breathtaking and the writing unquestionably illuminates our understanding of these great creatures and how they have influenced our cultures. On a one to ten scale, we give this book a twelve!

A nod to Annie Proulx and her "Bad Dirt" collection of stories

Review Date: 2005-07-30
The indomitable Ms Proulx once again shows her prowess in her excellent collection of true grit short stories about modern Wyoming with its cowboys in luxury ATVs prowling over a vast suburb of rich outsiders on glitzy ranches by nodding to this work by Reginald Reynolds on the history of beards in our civilization.
She points out that Mr. Reynolds' book was published in 1950 and had an interesting chapter in it titled, "Cullinary Instructions for Christian Cannibals" in which it is claimed that Richard the Lion Hearted once entertained his crusader warriors with a banquet in which the shaved decapitated heads of Saracen warriors were served as the centerpiece of the meal. Beards and the attendance of them plays a large role in the Islamic doctrine.
As i am a devoted fan of Ms Proulx even though I do not really know how her name is really pronounced..... I think it sounds like prewll or pru'll.... often the X in French is silent.
It was astounding to be sitting here in Paris reading her "Bad Dirt" stories of Wyoming and find that she has not just made up Reginald Beard and his History of Beards.
Mr. Dale's book is a very close shave. It is a good read.
