Actually, as the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. The Nose Masks are the vehicle for inspiring laughter. When wearing one of my favorite nose masks, I not only inspire hysterical laughter from others, but I myself laugh the hardest. I can not imagine life without my nose masks. This book is a must for anyone who is silly at heart, or wishes that they could be silly.

Novel, enjoyable do-it-yourself fun for kids of all ages.

In 1807, Colonel Pike led a military expedition starting in St. Louis and exploring the Louisiana Territory. The team split in half with one group led Lieutenant James Wilkinson, son of a General, leading four soldiers and two Indian guides southward along the Arkansas River.

The Wilkinson party faces hardships with no chance of turning back as the winter and raiding Indians have caused havoc on them. Rifle Sergeant Daniel Morgan hunts for food while the others rest, but finds an old trapper and his son. Henri Chartier welcomes him into camp and shows him some Viking runes only to have a mountain cat kill him. Daniel buries Henri and goes to take the lad with him only to be shocked that he is a she and now a widow. As Daniel protects the half-breed "Little Louise" from his men and pays the bride price to her uncle, he falls in love with her. However, he is married and soon they will learn her connection through Henri to French royalty removes her even further.

This is an excellent historical romance that shows how great Merline Lovelace is. Her latest tale is a delightful story that brings vividly to life the early nineteenth century American frontier. The lead couple is a fine duo while the support cast provides the depth that makes this a strong story worth reading by sub-genre fans.

A Magnificent Book of Intelligent Poems Looking At Life Squarely

J.D. Smith's book is a challenge to those who say you can't have both sly, intelligent humor and serious depth in poetry. His poems range from the difficulties of loving someone, asking that you start with a stone first, to looking at the cost of creating art through the lens of Prozac and modern medicine. Rarely have I read a book where the poems have stayed with me longer or had more impact on how I view the world around me. Buy it now -- it'll stay with you longer than that CD or self-help book you were planning to buy.

A true master of the art form, Smith easily shifts from style to style and from one theme to another. Settling for Beauty is full of surprises and rewards. A dedicated student of human nature, Smith has his own unique way of looking at the world, and through his insights and his marvelous wordplay he cajoles, convinces, and compels us to take a long look at our own lives.

A stroke striking someone down at the age of thirty two - it can happen, and it struck down a woman in her prime. "Shooting Star: The Amazing Life of Ann Marston" celebrates the brief yet accomplished life of Ann Marston, beauty pageant champion, archery champion, model, & early promoter of Rock N' Roll. Covering her short life, it is an inspirational yet sad tale and a cautionary tale that everyone may be struck down, so always consider the now. "Shooting Star: The Amazing Life of Ann Marston" is a must for community library biography collections.

Shooting Star tells the story of archer extraordinaire Ann Marston. Born "In the shadow of Sherwood Forest" in 1938, Ann won a local beauty contest at ten months old and soon became a popular child model, appearing in numerous print ads and catalogs throughout England. She showed an interest in archery and by the age of nine was winning archery competitions throughout England.

In 1949 the Marston family moved to Wyandotte, MI, where Ann became an international archery champion, a finalist in the Miss America pageant and a rock band promoter despite being diagnosed with diabetes at age 12, which eventually stole her sight. Ann's life ended tragically in 1971 after suffering a massive stroke.

Author Alana Paluszewski had access to Ann's personal diaries, family home movies and photographs, enabling her to accurately tell the story of the first female professional archer. Shooting Star: The Amazing Life Of Ann Marston is of interest to archery aficionados, Detroit pop history buffs and anyone interested in reading the inspirational story of a true sports pioneer.

Sleeping Beauty II ~~ Post Mortem at its Finest~~~

If you are interested in historical Post Mortem, then this book is for you.

High quality hard cover book with a black dust jacket.

I have it and i love it~~ I purchased it in late summer early fall of 2002 when it first came out.

The first book is valuable, i wish i could acquire it or afford to someday~~

meanwhile i am happy with the second version.

hope that they put out a third version someday~~

Some people might think that this is eerie, to say the least.

But folks back in the 1800's had little or no money for photos of the living~~

And many people died young back then~~ medicine was still in its infancy so there was not much for cures...

Taking a photo of the deceased was the last earthly time that one would see that person...

So I do understand the need....

Photos of Parents or Parent with Child seem most revered by collectors...

any way, it's a beautiful book, worthy of its subject~~

An absolutely brilliant collection of mortuary photography compiled by the one and only Stanley Burns. The collection is wide-ranging and the photographs range from bland to poignant to artistic to anthropological to fascinating to creepy with stops at all points in between. This collection compiles the original set of images originally released in the hard-to-find and long out-of-print first edition (Sleeping Beauty), and the images are well-known from their inclusion as part of the "Book of the Dead" in the brilliant movie The Others. Burns documents as much as is known about each photograph, littering his commentary with insightful anthropological details that explain the motivation behind the images, and their supreme importance to the people who had them taken. An extraordinary work.

Breathtaking images!

Having grown up with postmortem photography in my family albums, and raised by two Victorian German-Polish Americans, this subject did not seem taboo to me. Both Stanley Burns and Jay Ruby(Secure the Shadow) recognize that these photos are shocking to some, however once over any shock you might feel, the images tell so much more than that of living images..just like any archeological, anthroplogical study..we always learn more from the dead than the living. If you already collect postmortem items, this book will save a lot of money as he has collected the images for you! I only wish the first Sleeping Beauty would go to reprint, heck you have to take out a bank loan to get one! Another good one I mentioned earlier is Jay Ruby's "Secure the Shadow". I am currently buying Michael Lesy's "Wiconsin Death Trip" and would need another bank loan to grab James Van Der Zee's "Harlem Book Of the Dead"..If anyone has a copy of Sleeping Beauty, the first one..and just doesn't want it around the house 'cause it is morbid and they want to sell it fast and ..well..cheaper..LET ME KNOW!!! Dawn.

Each spa gets a quick overview on 'whether this spa is for you.' Full of helpful information and Ms. Foglino's writing is vivid and engaging. This was one travel book I actually found myself reading (I find most boring).

The photos are unusually beautiful too. Photographer Linda Troeller can make a mud bath into a work of art. My one problem with the book is that most of the spa resorts are pretty expensive (there are only a couple that are for the budget-minded.) It would make a great present for a friend or relative who loves spas, or someone who likes to dream.

Scrumptuous!

This book saved my life! Had to go on a long, stressful trip to the Southwest and knew I'd need a break at the end. I found Spa Journeys in my doctor's office (of all places!) and used it to find an *incredible* spa in Arizona. It doesn't just tell if a place is good or bad; it explains how you can turn your trip into a really intense, positive, life-changing experience.

I'm planning a trip to Europe this summer and will use Spa Journeys for that, too. Thanks, Linda and Annette!

Different from other travel books. The photos are unique and artistic (some of them are very sexy, too!). Foglino writes with a sense of humor (an over decorated Virginia spa reminds her of "the inside of a pillow-case"). This book is a far cry from the usual rehash of brochures pix and promotional come-ons. It's fun to read and fun to just look at!

A history which is gruesome at times, but always revealing

Works of body art have traditionally reflected rites of passage, served as group identifiers, and made people confirm to a cultural code and social standard outsiders rarely understand, so it's timely that cultural anthropologist John Rush examines different processes and procedures of radical physical alternations in different cultures, from branding to tattooing and self-inflicted pain. Spiritual and social concerns are gathered into a history which is gruesome at times, but always revealing.

Excellent information for anyone considering a tattoo!

Review Date: 2006-03-02
I found Rush's research and presentation of information to be extremely interesting and well-presented. However, the real value of this book for me was in the suggestions for dealing with psychic and physical pain.

As I had my own tattoo work done, I used many of Rush's suggestions and techniques on breathing, relaxation, and "embracing the pain."

Prior to getting my tattoo, many of my peers described their own experience with the pain of tattooing in terms of bravery "it didn't hurt at all" or annoyance "it is really irritating."

By properly channeling the pain--rather than fearing, putting up with, or obsessing about it, however, I found the entire tattooing process to be so much more pleasant, profound, and meaningful. I can truly say that I felt serene throughout the entire three-hour experience.

I highly recommend this book for people interested in experiencing tattooing on all levels-the intellectual, the emotional, and the spiritual.

Provocative and compelling reading

I read numerous books on tattooing prior to my own adventure but Spiritual Tattoo tops them all. Dr. Rush presents some very interesting information about tattooing and scarification in ancient societies, concluding that the behavior is very, very ancient and is probably analogous to marks naturally acquired. Purposes include rites of passage, group identity, and in more recent time, the use of tattoos and scars by governments to mark the body for control purposes. What I found most interesting is the procedure he details for using pain to purge limitations and traumas in history. As our monotheistic religious myths focus on pain and suffering, this work fits right in! I also enjoyed the connection he made between tattooing, yoga, chakras, and spirituality. There also appears to be a great deal of coding in the book, which relates to this book's sequel, The Twelve Gates. For example, in the page headings for Chapter Five, Trauma is spelled Trama--Dr. Rush is saying he "takes U (you) out of your trauma." This is a very readable work that will appeal to a wide audience. I'm looking forward to The Twelve Gates.
