This book is a lot of fun & makes a great gift for those who are into sneakers and like to personlize their look. IO've gotten a lot of compliments on my lace styles so I've got to give a thumbs up to this book. You'll find that this book works especially well with Nike's, Puma's, k-swiss, and classic Adidas sneakers. You'll will also find lacing styles for boots.

I was on the mailing list for the announcement of the publication of this book, but like a number of things on my ToDo list, it got shoved aside and forgotten for a while. Finally having it in my sweaty little hands, I've got to say that this book is just way too cool for words. I wish I'd had this decades ago. Oh yeah, and my kids love it, too. This book could be crappy, but instead it's decidedly sturdy. My imagination conjures images of the author arguing with the publisher to get it done properly. He definitely won, too. It's designed in such a way that you can open it to a page, fold the flap with the laces over and learn by doing. The best way to learn, if you believe neuroscience. It comes with extra laces and a resealable plastic pouch (also sturdy) to keep them in. Altogether brilliant.

Ian Fieggen describes and illustrates so many lacing options. He suggests horizontal, vertical, twisted, and even stars. A couple of options relieve toe pressure, a bonus for aching toes! His sketches provide easily understood lace paths. There are plenty of colorful flat and round laces included with the book to encourage practice. The ends of those laces don't go unattended; a whole section on ways to tie them off gets away from the usual bow. Best yet, there is a cure for how to succeed in lacing: get the right length. As an example, for Lug Bar Lacing, compute the following formula:
((H+W)x(P+1)+Vx(P-1)+L)x2
where P is eyelet pairs, H is horizontal distance between eyelets, W is width of lugs, and L is the amount desired to tie the knot. As other formulas include square root and power of two, it's a great time for calculator practice. In case you still have a cord undersized, several lacing options are available for short laces. There are other opportunities for Ian Feiggen's designs, such as new cut T's, side-cut jeans, scrap booking (lots of eyelets there), and maybe even storage tarps (your outdoor grill would look so good).

This book was a surprise ! I picked it up because, as a graphic designer, I was interested in its unusual book design. But, after leafing through it, I found lacing styles for all kinds of shoes -- not just children's shoes and athletic shoes. Want to know how to do a Roman lacing for your dress shoes ? This book has it. How about a useful lacing style for hiking boots or bicycling shoes ? It's here.

Of course, the stars of the book are the neat decorative lacings. Adding a flair to your everyday shoes, a decorative lacing will set you apart from the crowd. My favorites are "starburst" and "checkerboard."

With a little creativity, you can apply the lacing styles to anything with a lace-and-eyelet system. For example, Renaissance faire performers, such as myself, will enjoy this book for new ways to lace up their boots, tunics, bracers, doublets, and corsets.

In short, this is a great book for creative folks all ages.

Informative and a whole lot of fun!

I love this book and so do my two kids, a 7 yo boy and an 9 yo girl. I originally bought the book to help my son learn to tie his shoes. He is left handed (and I am right) and has some fine motor difficulties. We tried my way and a few ways on the internet and just couldn't come up with an easy enough way for him to learn to tie.

The book has the lacing on the outside. It is designed so that the book folds open in order to view the instructions alongside of the lacing. He learned one of the tying methods on a car trip in less than 5 minutes.

The kids take the book in the car and try different lacing patterns. My daughter loves changing the lacing pattern on her shoes. They have both changed their lacing patterns numerous times since we bought this book.

I have learned so many things from the book too. Some of the lacing patterns are to help shorten those long laces that come on kids shoes these days. There are lacings for making shoes fit tighter, looser, for keeping the laces out of bicycle chains, and not to mention making a fashion statement.

I received Joseph's book as a gift...a true gift it was. Being a Client of Joseph's and being privileged to experience his Healing Programs and the use of his products, this book was naturally the next experience for me. It's wonderful to have knowledge so vital to our very being, shared, and Living in Beauty shares the knowledge of Marma science with the inspirational power to guide anyone toward their desired state of health, beauty and vitality. This is a beautiful book written by a truly beautiful Master.

I have studied health, meditation and martial arts for 25 years. I have meditated with Saints and been to some of the best Ayur Vedic healers, Network Chriopractors, Reiki masters, in the world. Joseph can quickly and accurately give you all the answers you have been searching for. And explain why it is you have made so little progress with all the help you had recieved. This book is wonderfull in its ablity to explain simply some very complex ideas, and to inspire you to a pure vision of yourself. One you knew was there all along but were not able to quite reach. As the book describes, Joseph was born gifted and then stuided many years with masters of herbology, Indian martial arts etc, and has continued even further to work towards a real vision of "perfect health". I have bought 3 for myself and others. God bless Joseph Kurian.

From dieting, exercise, gyms and spas to plastic surgery, many of us are focused on beauty and happiness from the outside. Joseph Kurian shows us how to use our gifts from God--our bodies, minds and spirits--to become the most beautiful beings that we can be. From the inside out. So eloquently written, I found myself reading and re-reading each word to absorb as much as possible. Not only an interesting and educating read but a practical guide which I know I will use as my health "bible".

A client of Joseph Kurian's for the last few years, I instantly felt and saw the positive and life altering effects of Joseph's creams, herbs and oils and rejuvenation treatments. Now I fully understand the history and methodology of his work and why I now feel better than I can ever remember.

What a wonderful gift God has given us through Joseph Kurian. Please read Living in Beauty and pass it along to your loved ones--I have!

I highly recommend Living in Beauty. Joseph Kurian is a gifted healer and this book helps one have a better understanding of what he does and how it works. I am an educator. The section of the book that I found to be the most profound and validating is his section on children and their well being. I have intuitively felt that children need to be with their mother, who stays at home for at least a few years and ideally for many in order for them to have a good foundation for harmonious living. Joseph talks about how children do best when they are home their mother for at least one year and ideally for 3 years and are breast fed for a year and a half. He also adresses the issue of birth and talks about how placing the child on the mothers chest and not cutting the umbillical cord until after it stops pulsing really helps. My intuition tells me that these practices are more healthy and natural than what typically goes on in many hospitals in the United States. This book is a validation for what I have seen and have felt works best for children in order for them to feel secure and develop loving relationships. Read Live In Beauty! It helps one to understand a different modality of healing.

I found myself reading Joeseph Kurian's book almost non stop. I have read many of the current offerings in this area of Ayur Veda and Indian literature. This book is set apart by the living knowledge it provides for us to use on a daily basis to gain maximum health, beauty, and vitality. He ties together the connection between the individual and the universe we live in most clearly. Living in Beauty is simple and clear in describing the daily self help practices of this Vedic tradition. Marma science is the root and most powerful aspect of any of the Indian healing arts and J. Kurian is a true Master in that pure oral tradition of South India.

This is a health/fitness book with an emphasis on strength training. Written by a doctor who is a nutrition consultant and a personal fitness consultant to Hollywood celebrities, it dispenses valuable facts and tips on nutrition and exercise routines.

Part 1 tells us the basics of nutritional science. Dr Lydon gives us just the correct dosage of facts and figures to keep us informed. She also debunks some fad diets and nutritional myths. There's nothing groundbreaking or sensational here, but just some honest and scientific facts. Only a few supplements are recommended - nothing exotic or amazing. Dr Lydon distinguishes herself from other authors of anti-aging books with a section on exercise by showing that she really knows her field.

Part 2 is a prescription for a strong and shapely self. Again, Dr Lydon dispels strength training myths about women turning into hulks after a few workouts. Encouraging muscle hypertrophy is not just about looks and vanity. It also helps keep metabolic rate up (hence help weight loss), reduce risk of osteoarthritis and even lower blood pressure.

After extolling the merits of strength training, Dr Lydon goes on to help design a routine. She begins with basics going into terminology like strip sets, drop sets, ascending, descending sets etc. Even for those not new to strength training, this has a few useful tips on how to get more mileage out of a workout. A few safe supplements are recommended. We're also warned against overtraining and exericise addiction.

The book then zooms in on body parts, muscle groups and gives tiips that even experienced bodybuilders will find valuable. The appendices offer a good reference for calorific values and glycemic indices of various foods. There are also exercise tables offering a guide for workout routines.

This is an excellent book on fitness and healthy living which I would recommend to any friend, male or female, who is interested in better health and physique. In an age when sensational, "revolutionary", misleading and unorthodox ideas consistently win the hearts of readers and get into the bestselling list, more factual, concise and honest books like this should be promoted.

This book is a great start for women who want to loose weight. As many reviewers have stated the author understands where you are coming from because she has been there. She has developed a plan that works. It's a good book but I found it to be boring in some sections. This is a great start for women who want to loose weight the proper way and have never dieted before.

I was familiar with Dr Lydon's work as a columnist for Oxygen magazine, & was impressed enough with her writing to purchase this book.
First of all, Chris Lydon is a medical doctor (MD), so she's not hawking the latest fad. This book presents facts, & the research to back it up.
I really like the way Dr Lydon explains why she takes a certain viewpoint e.g. why liquid creatine should not be your preferred option. The point by point review of important points to remember at the end of each segment is also great.
All in all, I found it to be a thoroughly worthwhile book.

This book surprised me. It's one of the best fitness books I've come across in a long time, and believe me, I've read a lot of them! But it seems to fly under the radar of most people, and I noticed no one has even reviewed it for quite a long time. This is too bad, because this is a truly excellent fitness book. The title is a bit dopey, but the content is top notch, and there is a wealth of great information contained in this compact volume.

Some points that I really noticed are:

1. The book is very intelligently written. She doesn't talk down to you, she doesn't over-explain anything, yet she provides clear and useful details to support what she says. She EXPLAINS things well. Some of it might be too technical for some, but if you wish to skip over details, it's easy to do.

2. The material is organized extremely well. And after each section she puts a capsulized review of what she just discussed. For those who wish to scan thru or just find essential points, this is a useful area. It also helps you find areas you might want to review and re-read in more detail.

3. The sections on targeted exercises were excellent. She describes the best exercises for the various body parts, and explains how to perform the exercises. She also explains how the wrong form can affect the exercise, which I found extremely useful. I learned quite a few things in this area...how I was doing certain exercises completely wrong. I have not yet read any book in which this level of detail was included about form. Everything she writes is clear and very concise.

4. There's a great section in the back of the book giving various routines. This is something I had really wanted to find because I always felt overwhelmed in setting up an appropriate routine for myself.

I learned a lot from this book, and one thing I liked in particular is that so many salient points are combined into one very manageable and readable book. Although Dr. Lydon is an M.D., she states right at the beginning that everything she knows about nutrition and exercise was learned AFTER she finished medical school. She is a fitness buff herself and not only has the medical background, she has applied what she preaches. She is a living example of what she teaches. She is very frank and forthright in her presentation, and this has actually become one of my top favorite exercise/nutrition books....and it makes a very good reference, too. I will be using this book a LOT, and I recommend this book for anyone who is serious about getting into good shape and gaining the knowledge to do so.

I believe this book is a wonderful gift to bestow amongst your female friends who are interested in living the fitness lifestyle. While Ms. Lydon will break out into medical jargon and get very technical, she also capsizes into bullet format after each detailed section a set of 'cliff notes' for review and easier understanding.

As a doctor, she eschews the woefully mismantled food pyramid and discusses the need for MORE protein and MORE balance. Ms. Lydon does not go for fads and does not believe in starvation tactics. Her section on supplements is helpful as she talks about supps that have real supportive data and what not to waste your money on.

Her training philopshy is basic yet detailed and speaks of the dreaded overtraining syndrome which many enthuasiasts are not careful to pay attention to.

I am extremely impressed with this book and as a personal trainer am likely to buy a few copies to give to clients who would like to walk the walk -- not just talk the talk. Her writing style is charming and upbeat without sounding sophomoric. You get a feeling that she is truly portraying herself and her love of the lifestyle.

I would love to see Ms. Lydon write more books on the subject matter.

In general, this book is a fast page-turner. Joan Collins has gone a long way to prove how attractive women over forty can be in other books and, as if it wasn't enough, she makes her point again with friends rallying for support. This book is written in a very colloquial style which makes us privy to Joan Collins' intimate chats with her friends about beauty, fitness, life and love. It is a privilege to have the likes of Stefanie Powers, Shirley MacLaine, Ali Mc Graw, Morgan Fairchild, Shirley Bassey, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Shakira Caine or Angie Dickinson handing down to us the experience of a lifetime in the limelight. Yet, the most naive readers should beware of certain oddities like Ivana Trump's gobbling up over six eggs a day, Shirley MacLaine's fasting for over six days on apple juice or Jacqueline Bisset's phobia of fans kisses for fear of bacteria transmission. Despite which, the book is a winner.

I loved this book! It was such fun to be privy to the secrets of the rich and famous. You'll find that these women are not much different from yourself. If you are a woman who cares for and appreciates her looks and feminity, you'll savor every word. Beware: Divas of the world will enjoy the book most. If you are flippant or carefree about your looks and the aging experience, you'll find it shallow and boring. I for one felt as though I was sitting across the table with Joan and friends over lunch, revelling in our womanhood.

The Joy of Discovering "Generation Zest"

What a pleasure to learn from a book that revels in the vitality of life after 40! My Friends' Secrets contains 200 pages of stylish pictures and down-to-earth dialogue that reveal the beauty and health tips of some of the world's most striking women. Here Miss Collins and her friends share more with their readers than advice about living well; they embody a "philosophy of life" that underlines the power of positive thinking as a way to inner happiness and peace. The result is an outward radiance for the world to enjoy. The author's maxim, "After 40 you get the face you deserve", sums up the essence of this book - the women of "Generation Zest" can and do take charge of their own destinies and reap the rewards of aging with grace. In a world where some are inclined to accept lemons, Collins makes lemonade. This sentiment of making the best of things comes through vividly throughout the book. It is perhaps the reason why My Friends' Secrets is a treasure for any home library. The secrets of the women profiled here fire the creative imagination. Collins is evidently in her element as an interviewer; the conversations in My Friends' Secrets have more spark and intelligence than any talk show presently on television. In this volume, it's clear that the author's best gift to the public is her own multi-faceted personality. In short, My Friends' Secrets is a five-star read and a tribute to the habit of living and loving an interesting life.

The books reads like a friendly chat. There are some great tips from legendary beauties such as Ali McGraw, Ivana Trump, the ever beautiful Joan Rivers and from society hostesses such as the Texas beauty Lynn Wyatt the always gracious Betsy Bloomingdale. This book is a must have for anyone interested in health and beauty. The photos alone are worth the price of the book.

As a dietitian, I tend to like very few nutrition/diet books on the market--as most seem to be based on pseudo-science or fad diets. This is pleasantly one of those exceptions. Congratulations to Lisa Drayer, MS, RD, for writing such a thoughtful, science-based, interesting book from which anyone 30 (or 20 or 40!) can learn about healthy eating ... and put it into practice.

I found the information in the book okay...pretty mainstream. Knowing you have to cut calories to loose weight is known worldwide fact.... Finding the motivation is truly another issue. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn to eat better...but as far as loosing weight...not so sure.

I needed some advice and ideas for cutting calories from my diet while trying to lose weight for an upcoming event. I've been following Lisa's suggestions and meal plans and it has really helped -- one of the best things is that she gives recipes and meal suggestions that are easy and quick to make, so I'm more willing to follow them...and I still feel completely satisfied throughout the day even on fewer calories. Another thing that I like is her suggestions for better takeout food, specific to cuisine, if you are eating out -- very helpful!

One thing that I must say about this book is that you have to really be ready to change your diet in order to truly see the benefits. With that being said, once you are ready to commit to it, you will without a doubt reap the benefits of this plan. I was amazed by how easy it was to follow. I loved how she dumbed it down for me and just gave me options to choose for my breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks from a list as opposed to count calories or carbs or anything else for that matter. I've only been doing it for a few weeks, but I have more energy when I workout, I sleep better, and I've seen enough positive results in such a shorttime to keep me faithful to the plan. One of the things that surprised me the most was how it curbed my cravings for fast food and the other things that have sabotaged my efforts in the past. If you're truly ready for something to change your diet and your way of life, I highly recommend this book.

I have the original of this book and find myself constantly reviewing it every time I come back from the tropical food markets. This book is very helpful even if one is familiar with and have grown up eating these kinds of fruits and vegetables. This book provides americanized recipes which is good because aside from being nutritious, most of these fruits and vegetables are beautiful and aesthetically presentable. You can serve fruits and vegetables that do not need to be masked by some gumbo-colored sauce. If you are the kind of cook who likes to serve beautiful dishes this book comes handy. You don't even have to follow the recipes just to use the vegetables. Once you become familiar with the vegetables you will discover how compatible they are with the common vegetables found in your regular supermaket on a dish of your own recipe. For example you could prepare a chicken dish with sliced tomatoes, potatoes, red and green bell peppers, carrots and bok choy with thickened chicken broth with your own choice of spices. The book details the following for each fruit and vegetable: Scientific name, description, beautiful illustrations, selection and storage, preparation and nutritional highlights.

It includes background and the author's commentary on each fruit or vegetable (and, as one of the authors notes, not your "garden variety" fruit and vegetables, but unusual things like kumquats and quince that those of us who grew up on iceberg lettuce may not have encountered.) She also includes a sampling of recipes for each item. The recipes have the author's usual creative flair, and all the ones I have tried have been really great. But, unless I was really more interested in the fruit part of the equation, I would look into buying her new vegetable book first. It was just published in December 2001, and would therefore be more current. There has been so much change in bringing some of the more unusual foods to market that it may make most sense to have Schneider's most recent book.

Fascinating , informative, and much more than a cookbook!

I began to browse through Ms. Schneider's book because I had some unusual fruit on my hands that needed to be cooked. I became ENTHRAWLED by the fascinating information about vegetables and fruit from A to Z, but not our usual apples and oranges varieties. I couldn't put it down. I will be giving this book to everyone I know!

The author has done an excellent job of sharing information that is invaluable for managers at all levels. She has a special talent for writing clearing and concisely. Her practical ideas helped my team focus on their own career development. I bought a copy of this book for each of my 37 employees. Thank you Jeanne for writing such a great book! I predict that very few readers will read this book as the format intended-one brief segment per week for fifty-two weeks. Why? Because the book is too interesting, relevant, and helpful. Once you read the first "simple bite-size coaching" item, you won't be content to put the book aside. Most readers will read the entire book the first week, and then start reading again.

Ms. Sharbuno writes with exceptional clarity, wit, organization, and insight into everyday concerns and challenges. Additionally, she has pulled together fifty-two marvelous quotations to segue into each short essay.

She explains her term "success from the inside out." To attain success, she advises, we cannot rely on outer circumstances. Instead, success depends more upon how we use our inner resources, often in the face of a threatening environment.

The book is highly contemporary, in matters such as providing guidance for launching a new career after a job loss. Readers will listen to her because she experienced that adversity herself, and transitioned happily into a new arena.

Likewise, when she talks about making your dreams come true, she explains how she achieved her fantasy of becoming a published writer.

Ms. Sharbuno counsels us on other important topics. Examples: overcoming procrastination, the value of our "body wisdom" (which others might call "gut feelings"), dividing huge tasks into manageable pieces, adopting an attitude of abundance, and reshaping our attitudes.

52 Ways will make you think, laugh, and reassess yourself, and will prompt you to alter your personal and professional relationships. I consider this book both practical and inspirational. I'm sure you will, too.

Try it on the Golf Course!

As a part time career counselor and full time entrepreneuer starting a business in coaching, I've found Jeanne's book to be enlightening, delightful and very useful. In a very short period of time I've recommended the book several times to both clients and colleagues as an aid to sort through moving forward with lives and careers.

I have incorporated Jeanne's "Be-Do-Have" formula for living success...from the inside out into my own daily affirmations and have talked about this concept in my workshops (with a nod to Jeanne, of course!). Perhaps the most noticeable, not to mention fun, innovation of "Be-Do-Have" for me, has been on the golf course! I find repeating this mantra as I address the ball, calms me down, smooths out my tempo and improves the results. Well, most of the time!

Buy this book. Read the words. Adopt the wisdom----you'll find yourself smiling, "From the Inside Out!"

A book has to capture me in the first few paragraphs to keep me interested. This one did that to the point I have already read this story three times. Jaime takes you on an edge-of-your-seat, emotional rollercoster ride. I am looking forward to future works by Ms. Lozoda.

I absolutely loved The Beauty Of June. From page one I was hooked! June transforms with each page, and the writer leaves you guessing until the very last minute with the information of what really happened to June in her life. A phenomenal story indeed!

The author gives you just enough information to get your mind wondering, but keeps you in suspense as to what really happened to June. As the story unfolds the unexpected ending leaves you with regret and satisfaction at the same time. I was able to see through the eyes of June a lifestyle I was fortunate enough to avoid. I hope this very well written book is just the first for Jaime Lozada. I can really relate to her writing style.

I can't even begin to describe the many different emotions I felt while reading this book. I couldn't put it down. Though it is a fast read, it is very intense, and you get a true feel for each of the characters. I look forward to reading more books by Jaime Lozada.

The book is well written and unlike most books I've read, incorporates a multifaceted approach to self improvement. It teaches us to love appreciate and ourselves unconditionally, celebrating our beauty both inside and out. I disagree, however, with some of the advice found in the last chapter of the book on "spiritual power". Although the tips are well-intended, I believe they strayed too far in the religious direction. According to this book, one must know that God's "a given" and the truth that "We are all connected to the omnipotent, omnipresence called the Creator." In my opinion, this book could have remained more secular in this respect.
